Paul O’Grady’s incredible secret friendship with Queen Elizabeth revealed for first time

Amazing details of the late Paul O’Grady’s relationship with Queen Elizabeth are revealed in a fascinating new book by his producer and friend Malcolm Prince

Paul O’Grady arrived at Lady Elizabeth Anson’s house for what he thought was a routine visit to see his long-standing friend who had been unwell. He carried a WH Smith bag, as he often did, and was led into the kitchen, where to his surprise, the Queen was already there, having a cup of tea.

Paul later admitted he was a little embarrassed by his disheveled appearance, but he did not let it show. But the encounter marked the beginning of an extraordinary secret friendship between Paul and the late Queen that today can be revealed for the first time.

“It was, I have since learnt, one of many such encounters Paul enjoyed with the Queen,” writes his friend and producer Malcolm Prince, in his new book, Paul O’Grady – Not The Same Without You.

“He kept his association relatively quiet, and rarely mentioned it on air or in public. If he did mention the royals, his viewers and listeners would not know if he was joking; after all, would you have believed him if he told you he had had tea with the Queen?”

On that occasion, Her Majesty thanked Paul for being such a loyal friend to her cousin, and for being a regular visitor to her during her illness. “Paul replied he had been friends with her for many years and his concern was the same he would show to anyone,” Malcolm writes.

Labour peer and actor Michael Cashman, who was close friends with Paul, says the late Queen loved how down to earth he was. “Paul was not impressed by wealth or privilege. He loved truth and he loved honesty, and I think that is why the Queen found him so interesting and why she engaged with him so often as she did,” he says.

Malcolm says he often believed Paul was joking when he name-dropped the royals while working alongside Paul for 14 years on his BBC Radio 2 show. “He used to say to me, ‘Well, they are listening’. I asked who and he used to mouth the words, ‘Royal family’. I was thinking, it is another one of his yarns. But he was telling the truth all along.”

In 2015, during the opening of dog kennels at Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, Paul encouraged the Queen to adopt a corgi – though she declined. His royal friendships extended to Queen Camilla, who appeared on his popular show For the Love of Dogs.

“He would have regular lunches with Camilla at Fortnum and Mason. You could not help but think how far he had come,” Malcolm says of Paul, who was awarded an MBE in 2008. “I think even he was surprised but did not like to boast.”

While Paul enjoyed these private royal moments, his final years were marked by heartbreak closer to home, at BBC Radio 2. Malcolm and Paul worried for the future of their hugely popular show following a change in management. Their fears were realised in the summer of 2021 when Paul’s manager Joan Marshrons was informed by the BBC of their plans.

“Instead of a new two-year deal to continue the show, Paul was offered a one-year contract for just 26 programmes in two blocks of 13 each. He would normally present over 40 editions of TeamPOG a year. His manager Joan phoned me. We were flabbergasted. And when Joan broke the news to Paul, he too was shocked.

“He phoned me. ‘F*** ’em, Malcolm. We will just do the first thirteen and then we will bugger off.’ I had never known him be so angry – which was saying something.”

Malcolm also writes how Radio 2 made the situation worse with the way they mishandled the public messaging. “When the BBC’s press office prepared a draft release which announced the comedian Rob Beckett would be joining Radio 2 to “save Sundays”, Paul hit the roof: ‘“Save” Sundays?!? How dare they say that!’. I could not believe how disrespectful the messaging and optics were…

“Joan did inform the BBC that Paul was not happy, and he received an email apologising for the insensitive use of words. A rewritten press release was published.”

The impact was significant, leaving his friends furious.

Jayne Tunnicliffe recalls: “I could not believe it when I heard Paul was leaving Radio 2. Asking him to share the Sunday spot with Rob Beckett must have been such a slap in the face…The move by Radio 2 was unforgivable…

“And it turned into such a disastrous decision because had Paul been allowed to continue the show with Malcolm, he might have still been with us today.” Malcolm says they were supported by fellow Radio 2 star Steve Wright, whose own show was ended by BBC bosses. He describes how Steve was also left “broken” by the decision.

He writes: “Privately, the diktat to end the high-profile programme after 23 years broke Steve, and during our call he kept on saying, ‘I just don’t get it, Malcolm, we haven’t done anything wrong, have we?’. To hear Wrighty sound so despondent saddened me.

“He was a radio hero of mine. I reminded him his own programmes, and the way he approached and created them, had inspired me in the way I produced. He asked me to send his love to Paul and we bade farewell.” Malcolm says that the bad blood over the way the episode was handled continued until the day of Paul’s death, at the age of 67.

Visiting Paul hours before his death at his Kent home on March 28, 2023, he writes: “Paul asked if I had heard from the BBC. ‘No’, I replied. Publicly, he had not said anything negative about the station since we had left the previous August. But he still found the BBC’s decision bewildering, believing they did not understand who the real Radio 2 audience was.

“It was clear Paul had not forgiven the Corporation for the way he had been treated…I wonder how long Rob Beckett will last?’ he mused.” Rob left his Sunday afternoon slot in April this year.

Speaking to this paper, Malcolm says he was not surprised Paul was upset up until his death. Malcolm says: “He was bruised, but I think really he was embarrassed, because that had never happened to Paul before. He was upset. He was angry about it. His fans deserved to know what really happened. It was a really unhappy situation.”

Amanda Holden’s special tribute to Alan Carr as she unveils Halloween transformation

Amanda Holden, 54, and her daughters transformed into three Traitors to celebrate Halloween – and her friend Alan Carr, who is on Celebrity Traitors, loved the costume idea

Amanda Holden paid a special tribute to her pal Alan Carr as she unveiled her Halloween transformation alongside her lookalike daughters.

The Britain’s Got Talent judge, 54, went all out for Halloween and channelled her inner Traitor alongside her daughters, 19-year-old Lexi and 13-year-old Hollie. The trio donned cloaks and carried lanterns as they posed for pictures to mark October 31.

Their costumes resembled those worn by Amanda’s friend Alan and his fellow Traitors on the Claudia Winkleman-led TV show, Celebrity Traitors. Sharing a video of her turning to the camera as well as two photos with her daughters, Amanda wrote on Instagram, “A trait(or) trick for you. Ahead of tomorrow …..#HappyHalloween.”

Alan, 49, loved the costume idea as he commented: “This is brilliant!!” A fan told Alan: “Now you need to be Amanda.” Presenter Claudia, 53, also gave Amanda her seal of approval as she commented on the post with four red heart emojis. Ruth Langsford wrote: “Brilliant!!!”

But the Traitors-inspired look wasn’t the only transformation Amanda made this Halloween. She also dressed as as Glinda and Elphaba from Wicked alongside her fellow Heart Radio host, Ashley Roberts. Amanda wore a strapless pink ballgown paired with a silver tiara and matching wand, while Ashley was painted green and wore Elphaba’s iconic black witch’s dress.

The Instagram post was captioned: “Defying gravity before their first coffee! @noholdenback, @jamie.theakston & @iamashleyroberts bring a little WICKED magic to Heart Breakfast this #Halloween!”

After starring in Celebrity Traitors, Alan has been tipped to become a new presenter of Strictly Come Dancing. The comedian is vying to win the reality TV series, which draws to a close on Thursday night on BBC One. PR experts say his stint on the programme, a spin-off from the civilians’ version, has helped further boost Alan’s popularity, following previous success with his own titular show on Channel 4.

And now the broadcaster is being touted to step in to host Strictly Come Dancing next year, following the departures of Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly. One insider said: “More people are watching Alan than are watching Strictly right now. He’s been catapulted to the A-list. The star dust is practically dripping off him.”

It is said Alan, the son of a former professional footballer, thought he would have been the first kicked off The Celebrity Traitors, but he has survived to reach the final five contestants. His antics alongside the likes of Sir Stephen Fry, Kate Garraway, Clare Balding and Celia Imrie have had millions of Brits hooked since October 8.

Alan, who won a BAFTA for Alan Carr: Chatty Man in 2013, was praised for displaying his “super competitive streak” and charisma, traits insiders believe make him an ideal match for Strictly. A source told the Daily Mail: “He’s an old-fashioned showbiz pro who would be just perfect hosting Strictly. If he does manage to win Traitors it will be a sign to the BBC that he has the star quality to present its flagship show.”

Strictly’s Jowita Przystal reveals cheeky nickname for Pete Wicks amid romance rumours

After a few steamy dances together, Joey Przystal and Pete Wicks teamed up for Strictly Come Dancing last year.

While romance rumours swirl and twirl around Pete Wicks and his former Strictly Come Dancing partner Jowita Pryzstal, the Polish dancer has taken to Instagram to gush about her “twinkle toes”.

Pete celebrated his 37th birthday on Saturday (1 November) and to mark the day, Jowita took to her Instagram to post a gushing message about the TOWIE star.

She captioned her Stories, “Happy Birthday to my twinkle toes @p_wicks01. She posted a number of photos to her main grid in addition to this. A black and white image of Pete and Jowita embracing while performing on stage was taken in the first picture.

More images of Pete were available, some of which were captured during Strictly and other related events. In one image, Jowita firmly embraces Pete as she smiles at the camera.

To someone truly special on a very special day, Jowita wrote in the post’s caption. I’m so blessed to have you here. Happy Birthday to @p_wicks01. We’ll probably dance once more soon, I hope so.

Pete and Jowita have been at the centre of romance rumours since their time on Strictly Come Dancing, after some of their dances on the show got a little steamy. These rumours intensified after the two reunited for a dance on stage at the O2 arena at a live recording of his podcast with Sam Thompson.

Although Pete claimed it was all doing it in the name of showbiz, the pair kissed during the dance, which sent the audience into a wild. Although Pete has stated that they are just friends, Jowita’s post’s comments were filled with comments about how deeply in love they felt.

One fan wrote, “Happy Birthday Pete, Jowita always looks in love with Pete.” Another wrote, “Finally, someone who suits him if they are together.” a lovely woman “I really hope you are actually a couple,” added a third person.

Pete and Jowita were partnered on Strictly last year and made it to the semi-final. This year, Jowita competed again and was paired with Ross King, but they were voted out of the competition in Week 3. Though Pete has turned returned to the show as an audience member, his primary reason for coming back was not to support Jowita, but to support his good friend Vicky Pattison.

Vicky is dancing with Kai Widdrington. The Geordie Shore star has become a fan favourite, though Pete has shared that, when he saw her on the show, he worried her nerves would be too much for her.

“I’ve never seen anyone get so anxious.” There were tears shed. Before she even f*****g arrived, there was all sorts of activity. She fears the f*****g woman in her own shadow. It is mental. But she knocked it out of the park.

He continued, “I would bet my house that she’s not going anywhere,” adding that he believed she would do well on the show. The first stage has been completed. You weren’t the first to leave.

Arsenal Ease Past Burnley As Man Utd Force Forest To 2-2 Draw

As struggling Nottingham Forest held to a 2-2 draw at home by struggling Arsenal, Arsenal brushed Burnley aside with a 2-0 victory on Saturday to take the top of the Premier League.

To put an end to their painful two-decade wait to become English champions, Mikel Arteta’s Gunners have won five league games in a row.

After scoring his first league goal since mid-September at Turf Moor, Viktor Gyokeres gave Arsenal the lead after a Declan Rice corner in the first half.

Arsenal have enviable options in attack, winning nine games in a row in all competitions, but their defense relies on a rock-solid defense, which has conceded just three league goals in 10 games so far this season.

When Casemiro scored the opener in the first half to take the lead, Manchester United, who are now looking for their fourth straight league win, appeared to be looking to move up to second place.

After the break, Forest, who had not scored a league goal since September 20, roared back and gave themselves back.

In the 48th minute, Morgan Gibbs-White headed home, but Nicolo Savona scored just two minutes later to end a dramatic turn.

United, who have greatly improved in recent weeks following a subpar start to the season, were saved with Amad Diallo’s sweet volley in the 81st minute.

Forest, who replaced Ange Postecoglou with Sean Dyche as manager last month, is still four points adrift in the championship table.

After suffering a humiliating 3-0 defeat at Fulham at Craven Cottage, Rock-bottom Wolves are eight points away from safety.

When Emmanuel Agbadou was dismissed later in the first half, Wolves were reduced to 10 men after Ryan Sessegnon’s opener was scored early.

In the 62nd minute, Harry Wilson doubled Fulham’s lead, and Yerson Mosquera’s own goal put an end to Wolves’ misery.

With a header from Jean-Philippe Mateta and an own goal from Nathan Collins, Crystal Palace won for the first time in four league games, 2-0.

Danny Welbeck, the unstoppable star of the Premier League, scored his sixth goal of the year for Brighton against Leeds 3-0. Diego Gomez also scored twice.

Chelsea and Tottenham have a chance to finish second in the table when Tottenham take on their London rivals in the early evening kick-off.

In the late kick-off, champions Liverpool take on Aston Villa in an effort to end a four-game losing streak that has ended their title defense.

At the end of September, Arne Slot’s men were 12 points clear of Villa’s Unai Emery, but the two teams are now tied for 15 points in the midtable.

Manchester City will host Bournemouth on Sunday when they begin their Premier League campaign on Saturday.

Swiatek and Rybakina earn dominant WTA Finals wins

Reuters

On the opening day of the WTA Finals in Riyadh, Iga Swiatek and Elena Rybakina won the match-opening match.

Madison Keys, the reigning Wimbledon champion, defeated in 6-1, 6-2, to defeat reigning champion Swiatek in the season-ending Finals.

In the other match of the Serena Williams Group on Saturday, Kazakhstan’s sixth seed Rybakina defeated fourth seed Amanda Anisimova 6-3, 6-1. The pair battled for only 57 minutes on the court.

After Keys’ error-filled debut, which was her first match since losing in the US Open’s first round in August, victory never looked in doubt for 2023 winner Swiatek.

Swiatek, the second-ranked player, broke the American’s serve at first chance, helped by two double errors, and did not relent. By the time Keys reached a 5-0 lead, she had only collected three points.

With just one winner and 15 unforced errors in the 23-minute first set, Keys, who finally won her first major title in January, held serve at the third attempt to temporarily halt Swiatek’s progress.

Swiatek, a six-time major winner, maintained her momentum with a break in set two before a poor focus in set three gave Keys a chance to regain her composure.

However, Keys’ two more double errors gave her opponent the lead, and Swiatek won five of the final six games to seal an unavoidable victory.

Serve defeats Rybakina in a victory.

In a clinical display of serve, Rybakina hit seven aces and won 87% of her points in her first serve.

The 2022 Wimbledon champion beat Wimbledon’s and US Open’s runner-up Anisimova to earn four of her five break point victories.

Rybakina, who won the Ningbo Open in October to place her in the Finals, is the player with the most WTA-level victories since the US Open’s conclusion.

In her follow-up interview, Rybakina stated, “I knew I needed to serve well. I’m very pleased with my performance, and I’m hoping to keep doing so all week.

What is the procedure for the WTA Finals?

Two groups of four compete in a round-robin format, with three points awarded for each victory.

The group’s top two players or doubles pairs advance to the knockout stage. The head-to-head winner advances if the rivals are tied.

Aryna Sabalenka, the 2024 champion and French Open champion, Jessica Pegula, and Jasmine Paolini are the top seeds in the Stefanie Graf Group, which will take center stage on Sunday.

England defeated Australia in their final test match against Australia thanks to efforts from warp-speed backrowers Ben Earl and Henry Pollock.

England retaliated with a performance at Allianz Stadium Twickenham that was heavy on perspiration, albeit a little weak on cohesion, after the Wallabies last year outlasted a 10-try classic.

After Harry Potter’s breakaway try gave them a lifeline to the game, Australia were only three points clear at the break.

However, England’s cushion was restored just before the hour when a snipe from Alex Mitchell and a rolling maul by Luke Cowan-Dickie ensured they could survive the final stages comfortably.
