‘Teddy bear’ coach helping Osaka rediscover her mojo

Naomi Osaka addressed the media at Wimbledon with little to say. Apathy had replaced anger.

After a demoralizing third-round exit, the four-time major champion thought she had “nothing positive to say.”

Less than two months later, Osaka’s face is now smiling again.

Amanda Anisimova will face the 27-year-old in the US Open semi-finals on Thursday, and she appears to have rediscovered her spark.

Former British no. 1 Annabel Croft, who analysed Osaka’s impressive fourth-round victory over third-seeded Coco Gauff for BBC Radio 5 Live, said, “Some of her tennis has been reminiscent of when she won her two titles here.”

“Here, the ball-striking is all about taking control of the baseline, opening the court, building up the point, and hitting a winner,” she said.

She makes the game seem so simple and effortless when she is confident.

Since the birth of her daughter Shai in July 2023, Japan’s Osaka has been out for 14 months, and her recovery from a game she once dominated has been gradual.

She is now gearing up for a Grand Slam semi-final after lacking optimism at Wimbledon and reevaluating her course.

The most important decision for her was to switch her coach.

She parted ways with Polish coach Tomasz Wiktorowski and Frenchman Patrick Mouratoglou, who had worked with 23-time major champion Serena Williams.

Wiktorowski is best known for guiding fellow compatriot Iga Swiatek to four Grand Slam victories during a three-year spell that ended in October.

Osaka responded to Wiktorowski’s approach by saying, “He seemed like such a tough guy to me, but when he smiles, he actually looks like a teddy bear.”

He says, “He’s not harsh at all when we talk after matches.” Like, he’s always very encouraging and proud.

I think it kind of gives me a safe place to express my tennis.

Instantaneous impact.

Osaka’s renowned ball-striking returned to her game, and her rediscovery of confidence helped her reach the final of her first tournament against Wiktorowski, which was more at ease.

I persevered until the very end, against Samsonova. From that point on, I believed I was going to be the strongest fighter I could be, Osaka said.

When I played Svitolina, I felt really good. I believe the match demonstrated how much I can unite with everyone.

Victoria Mboko, a Canadian teenager, won the final matchup, and Osaka was then met with criticism for glaringly unlucky in defeat. However, the momentum has continued into the US Open.

Osaka said, “I want to take away from this tournament just smiling and having fun.”

“I’m aware that in my first round, I was too apprehensive, and in my second-round game, I was just really not smiley at all.”

“I just wanted to be grateful before the Gauff] game. When I play against the best players, I have the most fun.

Osaka has benefited from a largely more restrained approach, wisely utilizing her baseline power to make mistakes in front of her foes.

“Osaka is a very rhythmic player; not much creativity, but beautiful timing, and effortless power,” Croft said.

The singer continued, “I sing live every night, and there is a significant risk based on our combined experience with a show like ours.” I would be more concerned about the long-term effects on my voice, even though it was a difficult and agonizing decision.

“I’m sorry, let down, and apologize in advance, but I’m so sorry.” I apologize so much. I made an enormous effort to avoid this and take good care of myself to put on this demanding show.

I sincerely love my fans, respect you, and hope you will accept my sincere, regrettable apology. We’re attempting to change the schedule as soon as possible.

Lady Gaga has been open about her health in the past, and revealed eight years ago that she has fibromyalgia, which is a chronic illness that causes widespread pain, fatigue, and cognitive problems.

Although her illness has resulted in numerous tour cancellations over the years, her fans have always been sympathetic.

Gaga previously remarked in a statement to Vogue that she finds herself irritated by those who don’t think fibromyalgia is real. More compassion is needed in society. No joke about chronic pain. And it’s every day when you wake up without knowing what you’ll think. “

In her 2020 interview with Oprah Winfrey, the Abracadabra star once claimed to take mental health medication to assist her.

I take a mental health medication. She said, “If I didn’t take it,” I would spiral a lot and get spasm in my sleep. I really appreciated taking medication. Many people are afraid to use drugs to improve their brains. I want to completely remove the stigma associated with this.

For fibromyalgia, anti-psychotic medication is not advised. Gaga claimed that this was her first “performance without pain” during her 2022 tour in 2024.

I completed it painlessly. The star said before claiming she hasn’t “smoked pot” in years, having previously smoked to ease the pain, “I’ve like, changed,” “the star said.”

Gaga has used her music to express her struggles with mental illness. Dance in the Dark, her song, explores body dysmorphia, while Marry the Night explores reckless drinking as an escapism.

Till It Happens You also discusses the PTSD brought on by sexual assault. She said, “I would say that my mental health has always been very important in the development of music.”

Because I always wanted to sing when I was at my lowest. And because I sang a lot, I was feeling that way quite frequently. I would find my voice and write music when I was feeling lost, which would help me find my voice and ground myself.

The singer from Sour Candy once shared details of her struggles with mental illness and the pain she has endured since undergoing a teen rape. When a male music producer threatened to burn her music if she didn’t listen, she was 19 years old.

Gaga claimed that because she was sick and vomiting, her alleged rapist “dropped me off pregnant on a corner.” She experienced a “complete psychotic break” a few years later and was in an “ultra state of paranoia.”

On the first episode of Oprah Winfrey and Prince Harry’s Apple TV+ series, The Me You Can’t See, she recalled that she “couldn’t feel my own body.” I first experienced severe pain, then I experienced numbness, and then I spent weeks in the hospital.

I realized that the person who sexually assaulted me dropped me off pregnant at my parents’ house because I was sick and vomiting the same way. because I had been abused and spent months locked up in a studio.

FCT Needs Own Police Force To Improve Security, Says Lawmaker

A member of the House of Representatives, Joshua Obika, has called for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to have a police force as a pilot phase in response to the government’s increasing debate over state police. Obika also cited rising insecurity and stretched infrastructure in Abuja.

Obika claimed that the initial security structure for Abuja had been overbuilt as a result of the influx of visitors from all over the nation looking for safety during a speech on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief program on Thursday.

The National Assembly is the FCT’s legislative body, and Mr. President is Abuja’s governor under the Constitution. Before we can pass the law establishing FCT policing, we don’t need the two-thirds state assembly’s approval. To start this program, I suggest using the FCt as a pilot state.

People now believe that Abuja is Nigeria’s safest city, and both good and bad people are also influxing as a result. He claimed that the security architecture in Abuja was “overwhelming.”

The lawmaker, who represents the FCT’s Abuja Municipal/Bwari Federal Constituency, noted that many rural areas lacked police presence, making them potential hideouts for criminals.

He added that the majority of modern technology was absent.

Obika suggested earmarking a small portion of Abuja’s internally generated revenue when proposing a funding model.

You can only use modern technology to solve these kinds of issues, according to the FCT command, which I don’t believe has any drones in place. Money is necessary for the police.

“The FCT generates about 1.8 trillion internally,” according to the statement. The independent police force of the FCT can use about 2% of the proceeds. He argued that there are many benefits to using modern technology, hiring more men, and increasing vehicle ownership to combat crime.

His request comes as President Bola Tinubu recently stated that some states required security personnel who are knowledgeable about the local environment and culture.

The President stated that the federal government would take into account the state police’s operations and to properly equip recently deployed forest guards when he received a delegation of prominent citizens of Katsina State led by Governor Dikko Umaru Radda at the State House on Tuesday.

Climate change driving conditions for Iberian wildfires: Study

According to a recent study, climate change is making the wildfires that affect hundreds of thousands of hectares of land on the Iberian Peninsula each year more frequent and intense.

According to a study released on Thursday, researchers from the World Weather Attribution (WWA) network found that climate change is 40 times more likely to cause wildfires in Portugal and Spain, as well as other regions of Europe.

The publication comes a few weeks after a heat wave and deadly wildfires hit Europe, bringing together findings that warn of Mediterranean fire-conducting weather.

The WWA declared that Spain’s fires in 2025 were the worst in 30 years, almost quadrupling the average annual burned during that time.

The burned area in Portugal was 2.3 times that much as it had been annually since 1980.

More than 380, 000 hectares (940, 000 acres) were burned this year in Spain, and 280, 000 in Portugal.

According to the WWA, both nations make up two-thirds of the one million hectares (2,5 million acres) of wildfire-ravaged land in Europe this year, which is “the worst” since the Copernicus European Forest Fire Information System began recording in 2006.

More than 1% of the Iberian Peninsula’s surface area burned overall in 2025, according to the report.

The wildfires caused at least four fatalities, according to reports, and a large number of people were forced to flee.

The report warned that “with further warming, more extreme, concurrent fire-weather will continue to put the limits on firefighting resources and push the boundaries of adaptation.”

The researchers also noted that unmanaged forest land has become a result of rural depopulation and an ageing population in parts of Portugal and Spain, making dense fuel loads and hazy conditions more susceptible to wildfires.

The Iberian Peninsula experienced unusually high temperatures throughout the entire month of August, with many locations experiencing thermometers that exceeded 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit).

More than 1,100 deaths were related to the 16-day heatwave in Spain, according to an estimate from the Carlos III Health Institute.

The heatwave was “the most intense on record,” according to Spain’s State Meteorological Agency.

This year, intense wildfires were reported in countries like France, Italy, Greece, Albania, and Turkiye.

According to WWA, wildfires also had devastating effects on nature, harming 395 endangered, vulnerable, or specially protected species habitats in Spain and Portugal.

In the municipality of El Arenal, central Spain, a firefighting aircraft catches a wildfire in July.
