Crowley and Whelan in hospital after York falls

After falling during a race in York, jockeys Jim Crowley and Trevor Whelan were taken to the hospital.

After the pair suffered injuries in the Garrowby Stakes, racing was delayed by nearly 30 minutes.

When Crowley’s mount clipped heels with another horse and came down, the William Haggas-trained race favorite Almeraq, which was out of room.

Without getting seriously hurt, both horses appeared to escape.

Before being taken to Leeds General Infirmary, former champion jockey Crowley and Whelan received treatment on the track for some time. Both riders reportedly spoke and spoke.

Elmonjed, a stablemate of Almeraq, was ridden by Cieren Fallon and ran away with a 5-1 win.

Both jockeys were speaking and conscious, according to William Derby, York’s clerk of the course and chief executive.

They have lower limb injuries, according to Trevor Whelan’s ankle and Jim Crowley’s, despite the fact that I believe they will need more testing.

At the start of a race in Fontwell, jockey David Noonan was kicked by a horse, who later went to hospital with a suspected broken leg.

Ireland ‘didn’t get into their flow’ in Black Ferns loss

Aoife Dalton, the centre of Ireland, claimed that her side failed to “capitalize” opportunities when facing New Zealand in Brighton, where they lost 40-0 to the defending world champions.

The Black Ferns won Pool C with a hat-trick of tries, scoring only one more than that.

Dalton was angry with Ireland’s inability to appear on the scoreboard despite constant pressure during certain periods as they conceded their first defeat of the tournament.

We probably leaked two bad tries at the end, which probably makes it appear the game isn’t really what it is,” Dalton told Nicola McCarthy of BBC Sport NI.

They were invited onto us, we said.

Dalton was aware that New Zealand would come out firing in response to the Irish’s humiliating defeat in WXV1 last year.

And while Ireland put on some good pressure at half-time, the Black Ferns fought back 19-0 with a combination of fundamental errors and New Zealand’s leadership.

As New Zealand’s defense remained strong before scoring two late scores of their own to finish the scoreboard, Scott Bemand’s side bravely fought back in the second half, but once more they fell short of turning their possession into tries.

They are now under your posts a few phases later because we probably couldn’t get into our flow and made one attack or defense mistake, Dalton continued.

We probably left out two scores, but thanks to them, they were very successful in defending, and they turned us over several times in our own 22, so we had to be more sharp and tidy there.

When we didn’t need to, we instead invited them on. We couldn’t create momentum, and we pressured Dannah O’Brien, giving her no room to play.

Ireland will face France in Exeter, a team that defeated them by 12 points in the Six Nations this year, in the quarter-final.

With the France game looming and Edel McMahon and Stacey Flood both recovering from injuries in Brighton, Dalton thinks her team will recover quickly from the defeat.

You just have to wash your wounds and go again, you won’t feel sorry for yourself.

Thomas’ ride on time brings curtain down on glittering career

JavaScript must be enabled in your browser to play this video.

Instead of a six-day, 551-mile elite cycling race around the UK, laps of honor are typically a gentle stroll around a field.

When Geraint Thomas chose to live as a cyclist, you could say he was aware of what he was agreeing to.

Additionally, the public in Wales and the United Kingdom were unwilling to permit this sporting legend to end his distinguished career with a covert exit stage left.

The 39-year-old’s showpiece took him on a grand tour of the world’s largest cities, starting at the Geraint Thomas Velodrome in Newport, rolling up and down the hills he used to climb as a boy, before passing the house where he grew up, the pub where we drank our first pint, and the Maindy Flyers cycling club, where he first rode a bike competitively.

Thomas remarked, “I was emotionally crossing the line.” I was almost choking up riding my bike as I rode through Birchgrove and saw all the fans.

Then I ran into Swifty’s teammate Ben Swift, who I’ve been racing with since we were 12 years old. I couldn’t even speak when I came out to do the interviews.

“It’s undoubtedly emotional and extremely special, though. There is no better way to ride past Maindy, where it all began, than to finish here is truly unbelievable. The support I’ve received over the years is incredible.

Thomas is typically a master of dry quips and deadpan humor.

He allowed his emotions to flow a little more freely on Sunday as he conducted interviews while his five-year-old son Macs held his leg.

Thomas made up a joke about how “I wish I had tinted glasses, not the ones that allow you to still see my eyes in the rain.”

“Seeing him]Macs] and his wife Sara, that’s what makes me feel that way,” I recall. He’s already very interested in it, and I never thought I’d be going back when I was so young.

That’s really nice, and I like that he can take it all in and then enjoy and remember it, too.

Thomas has followed him everywhere, experiencing both the soaring highs and crushing lows with his family.

After picking him up after leaving Grand Tours and allowing enough injuries to make a surgeon smile, wife Sara and the rest are aware that these are the moments to cherish.

The sheer number of supporters on the course was impressive from the beginning, through its windiest, wettest, and coldest peaks on the Gwent hillsides, all the way to its finish in Cardiff City Center.

Thomas was rendered almost speechless after being blown away. However, how do you adequately summarise that tribute to a career that has spanned three decades, earned two Olympic gold medals, three world titles, a Commonwealth gold, countless other race victories, and earned cycling’s greatest prize of all, the Tour de France, in the immediate aftermath of a day’s racing?

You can’t, really, but the people who lined streets and mountaintops from Suffolk to South Wales over the past week did a good job of demonstrating what Thomas means to people.

Even though they were passionate, only a small percentage of his following were represented by the cut-out Thomas facemasks, which were a highlight.

His 2018 victory in the Tour, where thousands flocked to the Senedd and Cardiff Castle to salute this country’s hero, was the most obvious illustration of his support.

Thomas reached new heights after the Tour triumph. Being victorious at Le Tour is cycling’s most unlikely path to sporting immortality, similar to winning a World Cup, winning Wimbledon, or sporting the green jacket at the Masters.

Therefore, it only fitting that Thomas returned to Cardiff Castle in his final performance as a professional cyclist.

He entered with Macs, his niece Alys, his nephew Jac, and a group of young Maindy riders.

Another crowd of thousands greeted them at the castle, all enjoying a complimentary can of Thomas’ special beer.

After the previous rain had dried up, the sun washed down on the stage as a choir greeted him.

This was a king’s begotten return to the castle following his 2018 coronation.

With a nine-wicket win over Durham, Hampshire defeated the first team to advance to the Women’s One-Day Cup semi-finals.

Opening duo Rhianna Southby and Maia Bouchier made light work of the hosts’ total of 224-9, which was aided by Georgia Adams’ side.

When the heavens opened at Chester-le-Street, the visiting batters came back to finish the revised total as quickly as possible.

In a four-wicket win over Surrey, second-placed Lancashire maintained the pressure at the top, with Seren Smale scoring an unbeaten 67.

Thanks to Sarah Bryce’s (68) dominant victory over Somerset, the Blaze appear favorites to finish in the top two in the last four.

Hampshire could easily make it to the last four thanks to a 152-strong opening partnership.

Bouchier, who had a lead role and an unbeaten 93, was Southby’s (58) choice. Before the skies opened, the duo put together 144 runs in just 19 overs.

Southby fell when they came back, but a revised target of 171 in 37 overs was comfortably passed.

Durham had previously owed money to Hollie Armitage. Mia Rogers was run out by Naomi Dattari, who had already left the score of 15-1, when the home skipper made the turn to take the wicket.

And she was still there in the final over, having scored 88 in a 105-ball knockoff.

With the ball, Hampshire skipper Adams took 3-41 from her 10 overs.

Smale won the game, beating Surrey by a score of 225 to the best of Lancashire’s top-order.

Opening duo Gaby Lewis (39) and Emma Lamb (59), who combined for a 74-run partnership for the first wicket, provided a solid platform for the Welsh batter.

The 20-year-old held her composure as late wickets rolled her way home as she led her team to an unbeaten 67.

Although it had initially appeared to be much easier for Lancashire, Surrey gave it a late-night revival.

Before Kalea Moore scored 67 balls in 78 balls, with good support from Phoebe Franklin (25), Bryony Smith’s side were struggling at 60-5 before going on to score at 128-7.

In a game that was also affected by the weather, The Blaze won by 44 runs against Somerset.

Kirstie Gordon’s side gained a foothold early on in a game with only 33 overs per side and refused to concede.

Within the first 10 overs, Georgie Boyce and Sarah Bryce scored 76 runs for the opener.

The Blaze increased to 252 with the help of 63no as Kathryn Bryce maintained the momentum and Orla Pendergast scored 46 off 31 balls.

Somerset’s reply was broken by a stunning opening spell from Cassidy McCarthy, who took 3-12 from her four overs.

Somerset were all out for 169 with Amanda-Jade Wellington’s 53 runs coming from only 28 balls.

Following a briefing for rain to put pressure on Warwickshire, Essex was able to regroup late in their innings in the fight to avoid the wooden spoon.

Ariana Dowse (36) and Jodi Grewcock (39) both laid a strong early platform, and Jo Gardner’s 47 helped them reach a respectable total.

Amara Carr and Sophie Munro combined for 180 with less than five more overs to go. For the hosts to chase, they added 55 more runs from 29 balls.

When both the openers were canceled, Amu Surenkumar (56) took the lead and Meg Austin and Bethan Ellis (56) took the lead.
