Joey Essex has racked up eye-watering debts of £1.3million through his performing arts company. The Love Island star turned boxer is on the ropes after it was revealed he has failed to repay a £780,000 loan he took from the firm, Joey Essex Management Ltd.

Documents obtained by the Mirror reveal liquidators are uncertain whether he will pay back the overdrawn director’s loan. That is despite Joey signing a Declaration of Solvency document in August last year stating: “I have formed the opinion that this company will be able to pay its debts in full together with interest at the official rate within 12 months.”

Towie star Essex also has further debts worth £497,246. The 35-year-old owes a staggering £442,303 to HMRC in outstanding VAT, PAYE, corporation tax and court costs. The firm was taken to the High Court by HMRC last year over the debts and served with a winding up petition.

The TV personality’s debts also include £39,942 to celebrity bank Coutts and £15,000 to Companies House. The staggering debts are worse than previously thought – earlier reports suggested he owed £300,000 in tax.

Joey is the company’s only director and shareholder. He set it up in 2011, the year he joined TOWIE. The TV star has banked millions from a string of other shows, including presenting his own programme Educating Joey Essex, plus appearances on Celebs Go Dating, Dancing on Ice and Love Island. We approached Joey for a comment via his agent but he has yet to respond.

In 2023, the firm had assets of £890,000, including £780,000 cash in the bank. His other companies are JDE Property Limited – worth £100 – and Fusey Productions Limited, which are both dormant.

He closed down another firm, The Top TT Limited, in March. He set it up in 2023 and it never filed accounts. Essex recently made a big money move to boxing, which may help to settle his debts.

He landed a reported £500,000 pay day for his maiden fight. However his dream boxing debut could be under threat after his opponent announced plans to appeal the result.

He stepped into the ring for the first time last month for the latest Misfits event.

The TV personality earned a points victory over Numeiro, a Portuguese influencer, in Manchester on August 30. Essex even overcame a standing count in both the fourth and final rounds before being awarded the hard-fought win.

In a fresh twist weeks after the fight, Numeiro has revealed that he’s planning to appeal the result. The 27-year-old, real name Joao Barbosa, told IFL TV: “I really don’t want to cause any trouble, or to sound rude or do something bad.

“But every time I rewatch the fight, every time I speak to someone professional, coaches, referees, pro athletes, everyone I always get the same feedback. It was like, ‘That could have never happened (Essex winning)’.

“If they had given us a draw I don’t think we would even be arguing about it. It’s still not fair from my perspective, but It’s definitely not a loss.”

A rematch has been mooted but Barbosa insists that he’s ‘more interested in getting a fair result’ for their first fight. Should a rematch happen, he’d want it to take place outside of the UK.

Taylor still hopeful of Croke Park swansong

Katie Taylor has said fighting at Croke Park “would be the icing on the cake” of her career.

The undisputed light-welterweight champion closed the door on her rivalry with Amanda Serrano at New York’s Madison Square Garden in July with a vintage performance in victory to complete a clean sweep of their trilogy.

Taylor has not been drawn on her future since, but instead has “been relaxing at home with family”.

Although there is no definitive answer as to what, if anything, is next, the Irishwoman has left the door ajar for a return with the GAA stadium in Dublin high on her wish list.

“It was a great way to cap off the trilogy,” the 39-year-old told to Matchroom Boxing’s Flash Knockdown Podcast.

“I knew I had the potential and ability to make it easier for myself. I’m so glad I showed that with my boxing skills. It wasn’t a war this time. I came out unscathed.

“My name will be embedded with Amanda’s forever. They have been three history-making fights, I have the utmost respect for her.”

‘Jake Paul can fund Croke Park if he wants’ – Hearn

Eddie Hearn with Katie TaylorGetty Images

Eddie Hearn, Taylor’s promoter, confirmed he will sit down with the Bray fighter on Friday: “Not for a ‘what’s happening?’ but more a ‘how you feeling?'”

Taylor’s second and third fights with Serrano were promoted by Jake Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions, who have indicated they would be willing to fund a Croke Park date with their fighter Chantelle Cameron, which would also be the final chapter of a trilogy with the current score at one win apiece.

Hearn would be happy to let Paul take the lead once again but insists it would need to be a “big fight” to make Croke Park feasible.

“After the [Serrano] fight, I thought ‘what a great time to retire’ but now I don’t know. I’d say she is 50/50 in her head,” Hearn said.

“He [Paul] can fund it if he wants. We’ve taken his money two times and it’s been beautiful. Katie has made an absolute fortune and I would like to take this opportunity to thank Jake Paul for lining her pockets.

“Chantelle will try to goad Katie but she isn’t afraid of anyone. It’s a tough fight but if Katie had another war against Serrano, everyone would have asked her if that’s it, but because she boxed like Katie Taylor from the amateurs with feet and speed, you probably think you can have another one.

That’s not to say that support isn’t wavering for some.

Senators from both the Democratic and Republican parties have been criticising Israel’s violations of international law and calling for an end to US military aid.

And among the American people, Israel’s popularity has nosedived.

So why does the government continue to shield and defend Israel?

And is the US unable, or unwilling, to change the behaviour of the Israeli government?

Ireland won’t participate in Eurovision 2026 if Israel does: Broadcaster

Ireland, which has been critical of Israel’s war on Gaza, will withdraw from next year’s Eurovision Song Contest if Israel is permitted to compete, the national broadcaster RTE has announced.

The broadcaster in a statement on Thursday said participating would be “unconscionable” as a result of Israel’s war on Gaza.

Ireland has taken one of the strongest stances against Israel’s atrocities in Gaza and joined South Africa’s International Court of Justice (ICJ) case accusing Israel of committing genocide.

The ICJ in its interim order in January last year said Israel must take steps to prevent acts of genocide in Gaza. Numerous rights organisations have said Israel’s war in Gaza is genocide.

Israel has closed its Dublin embassy in protest against Ireland’s criticism of its military actions against Palestinians.

Israel has participated in Eurovision as a longtime member of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), which organises and coproduces the annual event.

Eurovision is organised by the EBU in cooperation with its members, national public service broadcasters such as RTE, in more than 35 countries.

Recent editions of Eurovision have been overshadowed by opposition to Israel’s participation in the contest over its continuing military assault on Gaza, which has killed more than 64,000 people. Currently, the Israeli army has been carrying out relentless bombardments of Gaza City to force its nearly 1 million residents to flee.

“RTE feels that Ireland’s participation would be unconscionable given the ongoing and appalling loss of lives in Gaza,” the broadcaster asserted.

The Irish broadcaster said it was also deeply concerned by “the targeted killing of journalists in Gaza, the denial of access to international journalists to the territory and the plight of the remaining hostages”.

Israel’s war has killed more than 270 journalists, making it the deadliest conflict for media workers ever recorded.

‘Still consulting’

The EBU said it understood the “concerns and deeply held views around the ongoing conflict in the Middle East”.

“We are still consulting with all EBU members to gather views on how we manage participation and geopolitical tensions around the Eurovision Song Contest,” Eurovision director Martin Green said in an emailed statement.

“Broadcasters have until mid-December to confirm if they wish to take part in next year’s event in Vienna. It is up to each member to decide if they want to take part in the contest and we would respect any decision broadcasters make.”

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said in May that Israel should be excluded in the future. Madrid has also imposed an arms embargo on Israel.

Noting that Russia had not been allowed to take part since its invasion of Ukraine in 2022, he said “Israel shouldn’t either because what we cannot allow is double standards in culture”.

A final decision about Ireland’s participation in the 2026 competition will be made once the EBU makes its own decision on Israel, RTE said.
