Coach Powell suspended over safeguarding concern

Long jump world record holder Mike Powell has been suspended indefinitely over a safeguarding concern, says the Athletics Integrity Unit.

The 61-year-old American, who now works as a college coach, is barred from all activities sanctioned by World Athletics, its area associations or member federations.

The two-time Olympic silver medallist joined the track and field coaching staff at Azusa Pacific University in California in 2022.

He is also prohibited from attending hospitality or private access venues linked to World Athletics Series events. The AIU said the suspension could be varied on application or appeal.

Azusa Pacific University has been approached for comment.

The British TV presenter took to Instagram this week to show off an outfit that had her feeling conflicted. Telling fans, “Red Denim was not a look I thought was for me,” Ranvir looked stunning in a vibrant denim midi that’s still available to shop from the high street.

The exact dress Ranvir donned was this Denim Short-Sleeve Shirt Dress in Red from Karen Millen. It is not only still stocked in all sizes but is currently boasting a nifty 30% discount while this end-of-season sale lasts.

Ranvir told her followers, “I’m not sure what colour choice in your clothing says about your state of mind, but I’ve chosen red twice this week! Any armchair fashion psychologists out there, feel free to share your thoughts. Red Denim was not a look I thought was for me, but here we are! Walking into the weekend like…”

The dress Ranvir styled creates a refined, casual look that can be dressed up or down with ease. Combining timeless utility styling with contemporary flair, this dress can be styled with a slim belt to define the waist for an effortlessly stylish daytime ensemble or worn without, as Ranvir opted for, to create a more relaxed and casual vibe.

Made from durable cotton, this dress promises to remain a wardrobe staple for seasons to come. Thanks to the midi length, Ranvir’s ensemble offers a sophisticated touch to this casual classic. It is perfect for the woman who values both style and practicality in her everyday wardrobe, and is set to seamlessly become a go-to for workwear or casual events wardrobes.

Normally retailing for £139, Ranvir’s dress is currently reduced to £97.30 thanks to Karen Millen’s current sale. That said, it’s clearly not just the TV presenter who adores this fit, as a few sizes are now sold out. This item is still up for grabs in sizes 4, 8, 10 and 12.

England captain Aldcroft returns to face Scotland

England captain Zoe Aldcroft has recovered from injury to start the Women’s World Cup quarter-final against Scotland on Sunday.

The 28-year-old, who is named at blind-slide flanker, has not played since the opening game of the tournament against the United States on 22 August because of a knee injury sustained in that match.

Fly-half Holly Aitchison starts her first game of the World Cup in place of Zoe Harrison, who drops to the bench.

World Player of the Year Ellie Kildunne had already been ruled out of the quarter-final after sustaining a head injury in Saturday’s win over Australia.

The star full-back is replaced by Helena Rowland, who impressed off the bench in place of Kildunne against the Wallaroos.

Prop Hannah Botterman, who has been a standout performer so far, is not named in the matchday squad after leaving the field early against the Wallaroos because of back spasms.

Aldcroft’s timely return and reliable Rowland

While Morwenna Talling performed well against Australia on Saturday to help seal top spot in Pool A, former World Player of the Year Aldcroft completes a balanced and experienced first-choice back row alongside Sadia Kabeya and Alex Matthews.

Talling, 22, moves back into the second row to partner Rosie Galligan, with Abbie Ward named on the bench.

Mitchell’s side have proven they can cope without Aldcroft, but getting the Gloucester-Hartpury forward back for harder tests in the knockout stage could prove vital.

England, who won this fixture 59-7 in April, are strong favourites to progress to the semi-finals, having last lost to Scotland in 1999.

Scotland are playing in their first Women’s World Cup quarter-final since 2002 after wins over Wales and Fiji, but come into the game off the back of a 40-19 defeat by tournament contenders Canada.

“We are adapting well to different situations, and while we recognise Scotland have improved, we will still believe we can build pressure on them,” head coach John Mitchell said. “This is an exciting challenge that we’re ready for.

“We trust our girls to be consistent, take ownership of their roles, embrace the occasion, and earn the right to another week in this competition.

Victory for England will ensure they break their own record for a winning streak across both men’s and women’s international rugby union (30), which was ended by New Zealand at the World Cup final in 2022.

Covering multiple backline positions on the bench has been Rowland’s regular role under Mitchell.

The 25-year-old was the Red Roses’ starting full-back at the World Cup in 2022 before an injury ruled her out of the final.

A good tactical kicker from playing at fly-half, where she scored a record 27 points against Samoa, and her exciting running game make Rowland a natural fit.

Aitchison’s return also provides extra fly-half cover behind Harrison that Rowland had been covering, freeing up the Loughborough Lightning player to push for a back-three spot.

Gloucester-Hartpury full-back Emma Sing, who is named on the bench, filled in for Kildunne during this year’s Women’s Six Nations Grand Slam decider against France, scoring twice in a thrilling 43-42 win.

However, Sing remains inexperienced at Test level with only 12 caps compared to Rowland’s 43, as Mitchell opts for proven experience.

Completing the back three are lethal finishers Jess Breach, who is the joint top try-scorer in the tournament with six, and Abby Dow.

Prince Harry wants to ‘reset’ relationship with royals and ‘regrets’ feuding past

A royal insider has claimed that the Duke of Sussex’s recent trip to the UK is part of the rehabilitation of his image, while also taking steps to mend his family’s ongoing rift

Prince Harry ‘regrets’ some of his divisive actions since he left the royal family, and is now hoping to ‘reset’ both his relationship with the public and his estranged family, according to a royal insider.

The Duke of Sussex left the UK yesterday after a whirlwind four-day trip to his home country, in which he attended the WellChild Awards on Monday, before travelling to a series of other charity engagements.

In between two important events on Wednesday, Harry made time to visit his estranged father King Charles at Clarence House in London, with their private tea lasting 55 minutes.

With their meeting – the first in 19 months – believed to have been successful, a royal insider told the Daily Mail that Harry’s conversation with his father is his way of paving the road to reconciliation, and trying to apologise to the royal family for his actions over the last five years.

An insider told the publication: “It’s become clear that Harry now regrets some of his actions. He wants to reset his relationship with his family and with the people of the UK.”

The source added that by Harry building bridges with his father, it will give King Charles a chance to have more of a relationship with his grandchildren, Archie and Lilibet, who live in California.

They said: “It’s hard to see [Harry] ever coming back to live in Britain but this may be the start of something that at least allows them to be a functioning wider family again.”

Just hours after Prince Harry’s meeting with King Charles, a spokesperson for the Duke of Sussex shared a statement that Harry “loved” being back in the UK and suggested the visit had gone well, saying: “He’s obviously loved being back in the UK, catching up with old friends, colleagues and just generally being able to support the incredible work of the causes that mean so much to him.”

While the meeting between Harry and Charles was a positive step in the right direction, it is unlikely to mean that a wider royal reconciliation will happen overnight.

Prince Harry, who is currently on a visit to Ukraine, has long shared that he “would love a reconciliation” with the royal family, telling the BBC in May: “There’s no point continuing to fight any more, life is precious.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Harry acknowledged that some of his family members would find it difficult to forgive him, after levelling several accusations against the royal family, but insisted he would like to rebuild the relationship with his father, especially in light of the King’s cancer diagnosis.

Chelsea set to sign Strasbourg’s Emegha in 2026

Chelsea have announced a pre-agreement to sign striker Emanuel Emegha from partner club Strasbourg in 2026.

The 22-year-old has decided to stay at the French Ligue 1 club – owned, like the Blues, by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital – for another season before moving to west London on a seven-year contract.

Multiple sources say the Netherlands Under-21s international turned down interest from Champions League and Premier League clubs having agreed move to Stamford Bridge earlier this year ahead of next season.

Emegha is Strasbourg’s captain and leads them into their first European campaign since 2020 through the Conference League.

He scored 23 goals in 57 league appearances and is one of the most important players at the club, which is led by English manager Liam Rosenior.

The move again highlights the close connection between Chelsea and Strasbourg after the French club was bought by new multi-club group BlueCo in 2023 for £65m.

Defender Ben Chilwell’s move to Strasbourg on transfer deadline day was the sixth between the clubs over the summer.

Young prospects Mike Penders and Kendry Paez joined Chelsea this summer and moved to the Ligue 1 club on loan. Mamadou Sarr joined Chelsea in a permanent £11.8m transfer from Strasbourg, before returning to the French club on loan following the Club World Cup.

In addition to the three loanees, Strasbourg signed Chelsea academy defender Ishe Samuels-Smith for £6.5m and midfielder Mathis Amougou for about £12m.

However, it was announced on Tuesday that Samuels-Smith, 19, had rejoined Chelsea, a month after going to Strasbourg – but that he would immediately leave Stamford Bridge for a season-long loan at Championship side Swansea City.

The reasons cited were a series of events impacting his development opportunities, including the addition of Chilwell and a contract renewal for defender Ismael Doukoure, who had previously been frozen out at Strasbourg.

The £6.5m was eventually refunded, with similarities in the case cited to when Tyler Dibling rejoined Southampton from Chelsea in 2022 because of “homesickness”.

Fifa’s loan rules state a club cannot loan more than three players to the same club in a single season so only a permanent deal was possible for Chilwell. Chelsea used three of their six international loan spots with Strasbourg.

However, there is no law to prevent Chelsea selling players to Strasbourg as long as the fee reflects fair market value.

Last summer, Manchester City and Manchester United were allowed to take their places in European competitions despite multi-club ownership conflicts with Girona and Nice.

That was after they agreed not to transfer players “permanently or on loan, either directly or indirectly from July 2024 to September 2025”.

Trump says ‘high degree of certainty’ Charlie Kirk gunman in custody

United States President Donald Trump has said that “with a high degree of certainty” the gunman in the killing of right-wing commentator Charlie Kirk has been caught. The shooting was an act of violence that has reverberated across the US and underscored deep and toxic political divisions.

Trump said on Friday that a minister, who is also linked to law enforcement, turned in the suspect to authorities. “Somebody that was very close to him,” Trump said.

Trump told Fox & Friends that he hoped the suspect got “the death penalty”.

Trump also said he plans to attend Kirk’s funeral.

The FBI and state officials on Thursday released photos and a video of the person they believe is responsible. Kirk was shot as he spoke to a crowd gathered in a courtyard at Utah Valley University in Orem.

The president said he was informed of the suspect’s arrest “five minutes before I walked in” the studio, praising local authorities for their coordination. “They did a great job, everybody worked together. It all worked out,” he said.

Trump paid tribute to Kirk, calling him “the finest person” who was “like a son” to him. He said Kirk was “a brilliant guy” who helped him win the election with TikTok and energised young voters. “I’ve never seen young people go to one person like they did to Charlie,” Trump added.

The suspect is “28 or 29”, according to Trump. Investigators were due to hold a briefing later on Friday with more details.

The assassination offers the latest example of how ordinary security measures can be defeated in an era of escalating political violence, when anyone associated with the political process is a potential target.

Trump said political events must continue despite safety concerns. “You have to go forward,” he said when asked about appearances getting cancelled after Kirk’s death.

The suspect is in the custody of Utah state authorities, according to a source familiar with the case who requested anonymity, Reuters reported.

Earlier the FBI circulated grainy security images showing a man in a black long-sleeved shirt, dark sunglasses and a baseball cap. The shirt appeared to feature a bald eagle flying across a US flag. Other footage showed the shooter running across a roof before lowering himself to the ground.

“Somebody this close recognises even a little tilt of the head, which nobody else would do,” Trump said on Fox.

Trump suggested the suspect’s father had driven him to a police station and handed him over to authorities.

Kirk, a conservative commentator and close ally of Trump, was credited with boosting Republican support among younger voters. He was killed moments before leading a debate titled “Prove Me Wrong” at Utah Valley University, about 65km (40 miles) south of Salt Lake City.
