Indonesia’s president to go ahead with China trip despite protests

After initially cancelling because of days of extensive protests against rising inequality, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has left for China, according to his presidential spokesperson, Prasetyo Hadi, in a statement.

Kim Jong Un, Russia’s Vladimir Putin, and more than 25 leaders will attend the parade in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square on Wednesday to commemorate the anniversaries of Japan’s defeat in World War II.

According to his spokesman on Tuesday, Prabowo is scheduled to meet with Xi Jinping in China for lunch. On September 3, he will return home.

Rights groups claim that at least six people were killed and over 20 were missing in Indonesia as a result of widespread protests.

Following the fatal shooting of a motorcycle taxi driver who was hit by a police car during a demonstration in the capital, protests started in Jakarta last week.

A five-storey building has been set on fire near the police compound in the central Jakarta Kwitang neighborhood after protesters have attacked the police mobile brigade headquarters.

In the easternmost Papua region, Surabaya, Solo, Yogyakarta, Medan, Makassar, Manado, Bandung, and Manokwari have also been the sites of demonstrations in other cities across the nation.

Protesters also targeted other lawmakers’ homes as well as the finance minister’s home in Indonesia.

“A thorough and truthful investigation”

President Subianto promised on Friday to look into the death of Affan Kurniawan, a driver for a gig motorcycle, and he also expressed his “deepest condolences and sympathy” for the government.

He stated in a statement that “I have ordered that the incident last night be thoroughly and transparently investigated and that the officers involved be held accountable.

The country’s government cut financial incentives for lawmakers on Sunday to address the protestors’ economic concerns.

President Subianto stated, “The parliament leadership informed me that they would revoke several policies, including the cap on the amount of money that lawmakers can receive from abroad,” without mentioning which cap.

The president, however, attacked the protests over the country’s economic problems on Sunday, saying some of the actions at rallies in recent days constituted “terrorism” and treason.

“Respectful and protected should be the right to peaceful assembly. In a speech at the presidential palace in the capital’s Jakarta, he said, “We cannot deny that there are signs of actions against the law, even against the law, which lean toward treason and terrorism.”

After several politicians’ homes were razed as anti-government protests spread throughout Indonesia, defense minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin announced at a press conference on Sunday that the country would take strong measures against “rioters and looters.” In order to improve security, the country’s armed forces were also stationed in the capital.

Rights groups claim Prabowo’s olive branch from parliament did not go far enough, despite the recent decrease in the protest rallies and the military’s deployment on Monday as a show of force.

According to Amnesty International Indonesia executive director Usman Hamid, the president’s statement was insensitive to all the complaints and aspirations the people were voicing during the demonstrations.

Love Island’s Lochan shares why he thinks Whitney went public with racism claims

Former Love Islander Lochan Nowacki has revealed what he believes to be the “real reason” behind ex-Wolson’s esoteric “racism” claims following a dramatic split.

Love Island star Lochan Nowacki has taken to TikTok to share what he believes was the motivation for his ex Whitney Adebayo recently making some bombshell claims about their time together.

In 2023, the pair met on the ITV2 dating show Love Island and ultimately placed as runners-up. Earlier this year, Whitney publicly announced their split and later claimed Lochan called her skin “dirty” during their relationship, an allegation he strongly denies.

It was revealed last week, after both people shared their version of what happened between them on social media, that Lochan is in the process of taking legal action against Whitney. Now, he has spoken about the situation again and suggested his “chemistry” with a female influencer is the real reason he feels Whitney has made allegations.

Whitney and Lochan, the stars of Love Island, made a public announcement about their split in April.

In his video, Lochan disproved both Whitney’s claims and Lochan’s interpretation of the timeline of their breakup. He began with the couple’s public announcement that they were splitting in April 2025, then makes reference to a video he and Too Hot To Handle’s Brianna Balram worked on in July.

Whitney continues, “As a result of her dig at this collab on Snapchat, saying “using another sister or clickbait.” The female collab guest stated in a podcast that we had good chemistry one week later, on July 31.

Whitney posted a TikTok accusing me of regularly calling her skin dirty on August 1st. She confirmed that this post was about me on August 2nd.

There was no mention of racial discrimination against me after our breakup, he continued. However, negative, false comments about me, my family, and my friends start to come out as soon as I collaborate with a woman.

Lochan previously explained why he sought legal counsel to refute the allegations, claiming that he had “no other choice” when he did so. According to reports, he allegedly worked with a legal team similar to those David Walliams used to settle his legal dispute with Britain’s Got Talent.

He claimed that “a number of posts made disparaging remarks about my family, friends, and I” have been made. “I tried to resolve this situation through the use of force,” I said. I thought I had no choice but to proceed in this direction.

Whitney’s attorney, who spoke with the media after the legal proceedings were announced, said: “Whitney has instructed her own legal team and is very confident in her position. Mr. Nowacki will vigorously defend any claim that comes up.

Whitney also provided screenshots of text messages Lochan claims he “f*ked up” with the “dirty skin” comment in response to the lawsuit.

She claimed in another post that he called her “Sofia,” a Black male from the novel The Colour Purple, who is forced to work for a white mayor and his wife as a form of imprisonment, and tagged his account. Lochan also disputed this assertion, accusing Whitney of “twisting the truth.”

Whitney once more stated on Instagram, “Racial ignorance is at an all-time high.” You’re not a black woman, so when you make “these jokes,” you can never tell me how you feel. I will always have the right to tell my story in one year, two years, or even ten years later.

You still chose to ignore my story, even though I didn’t understand how these comments made me feel, especially now that I’m not in my love zone. Your actions demonstrate that there was never love, but rather money and reputation. Bring it to a game.

She has yet to respond to his most recent video.

Olav Kooij, a Dutch rider, fought back from Tord Gudmestad with a strong challenge to win the Tour of Britain’s opening stage.

In the final stretch of the 167.6 km route between Woodbridge and Southwold, the pair engaged in a toe-to-toe conversation.

The 23-year-old Team Visma-Lease a Bike rider, however, passed the finish line ahead of Norway’s Gudmestad of Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale to claim his fifth stage victory since making his Tour debut in 2023.

“It’s a really good feeling, of course. Wining a race is always nice, and I recall well from that race two years ago,” Kooij said.

“I’m really happy to continue my success two years ago and I’m glad to return to this race.”

Hugo Hofstetter of France placed third, while Samuel Watson of the Ineos Grenadiers placed sixth overall.

After stage one, which required an early diversion due to a burst water main, Hofstetter came in third, followed by Kooij in the general classification, Gudmestad in second, and Hofstetter in third.

Meanwhile, Joshua Golliker of Great Britain leads the country overall in fifth place.

The 2025 Tour of Britain will also mark Geraint Thomas’ illustrious 19-year career’s final professional race.

The 39-year-old Welshman won the Tour de France in 2018 and advanced to the top 40 after suffering a puncture in the opening round.

McLaren Racing valued at £3.5bn after ownership change

Images courtesy of Getty

Due to a change in ownership structure, the McLaren Formula 1 team’s owner has been valued at about £3.5 billion, which is more than a sixfold increase over the previous year.

MSP Capital, a 33% stake in McLaren Racing that was acquired by majority shareholders Mumtalakat, Bahrain’s sovereign investment fund, and Abu Dhabi-based CYVN Holdings, has been acquired by US investment group MSP Capital.

MSP invested £185 million in its stake, which was then McLaren Racing’s valuation of £560 million.

Zak Brown, the CEO of McLaren Racing, stated to BBC Sport: “It’s a great day for McLaren.” It has been a wonderful journey to get back to where we are.

Our business was not competitive and our business was no longer very challenged.

This demonstrates the success F1 is having in the cost-cap era and has made us competitive, F1 said five years later.

“It’s great that McLaren is back in the lead and that the ownership structure has been simplified.”

McLaren Racing will enter the World Endurance Championship in 2027 along with a dominant US-based IndyCar World Series team. At the conclusion of the most recent season, it closed its team in the all-electric Formula E world championship.

The move highlights McLaren’s remarkable turnaround in F1 under Brown’s leadership, who took over the company in 2016, and its continued success under Andrea Stella’s leadership, who became team principal in December 2022.

McLaren are well on the verge of a drivers’ and constructors’ title duo after winning the constructors’ championship last year for the first time since 1998.

With victories in 12 of the 15 races thus far this season, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri are first and second in the drivers’ championship.

In the constructors’ title chase, McLaren have more than double the points of Ferrari’s closest rivals.

McLaren Racing stated in a statement that “the transaction will position McLaren Racing for continued success both on and off the track.”

The board and executive management “continue to work toward building the world’s most innovative and thrilling racing team.”

McLaren Racing, a division of McLaren Automotive, was acquired by CYVN Holdings earlier this year, is owned by the McLaren Group.

MSP held the majority of the shares of the minority shareholders in the transaction, which was announced on Tuesday, with Mumtalakat and CYVN purchasing all of them.

Our group of minority investors joined in 2020, according to Paul Walsh, the executive chairman of the McLaren Group, and we thank them for their unmatched support as we put McLaren Racing on a course to financial stability and commercial growth.

Russia, China ink deal to build new gas pipeline as they deepen energy ties

During Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to China, Russia and China have come to terms with building a new gas pipeline, Gazprom reported, underscoring the strengthening of their economic and energy ties.

A “legally binding memorandum” had been signed to develop the pipeline, according to Alexei Miller, CEO of Gazprom, Russia’s largest energy company, on Tuesday.

An additional 50 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas could be transported by Mongolia’s Power of Siberia 2 each year from Russia’s Arctic Yamal fields to China.

Miller added that from now on, deliveries from eastern Siberia to China will increase to 44 bcm annually from 38 bcm.

The agreement would increase Beijing’s energy options while reducing its dependence on American-imported liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports.

Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, signs the first section of the pipeline during a ceremony held on September 1 in the village of Us Khatyn to officially begin the “Power of Siberia” pipeline.

Unprecedented ties, in your opinion.

Following high-profile meetings between President Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping, the Russian leader praised Beijing’s “unprecedented ties.”

For the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Tianjin, China, Xi also hosted dozens of world leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Chinese leader urged regional leaders to reject “Cold War mentality,” making explicit reference to the United States, by promoting the security bloc as an alternative to the Western-led international order.

Despite several rounds of discussions, Beijing and Washington have not yet reached a trade agreement.

US President Donald Trump stated in an interview with “Scott Jennings Radio Show” on Tuesday that he is “not concerned at all” about a growing US-to-Russia border.

Pricing for the new route is undetermined, though. Russia’s efforts to offset the decline of its European gas market, while China seeks discounts, are being met separately, according to Miller, who stated that negotiations on costs would be handled.

According to Michal Meidan, head of China Energy Research at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies, “Announcements about Power of Siberia 2 are a huge turning point in the geopolitics of energy.” The message is that China no longer cares about what the West thinks or even pretends to be complicit in US sanctions. Additionally, it is not by itself.

boosting economic ties

Russia’s sanctioned Arctic LNG 2 project has already sent liquefied natural gas to China, indicating that it is ready to defy Western pressure.

Moscow and Beijing’s trade increased to $ 240 billion in 2023, underlining their growing partnership since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

No details were provided, but officials from the Kremlin claimed that during Putin’s ongoing visit, 22 agreements, including one involving a strategic cooperation agreement between China National Petroleum Corporation and Gazprom, had been signed.
