After bad light and rain forced an early end to the fifth and final Test, England will need another 35 runs to win the series. It will be a Monday morning thriller to decide the cricket series between England and India.
England was chasing a target of 374 at stumps on day four, 339-6. The series is 2-1 in the end.
For victory and a series tie, India needs to take four more wickets, perhaps three.
Because of Chris Woakes’ shoulder injury, England could only manage three wickets. On Sunday, Wakes was seen wearing his cricket whites at the Oval while wearing a sling with his left arm, which was thought he might bat one-handed if needed.
With 105 runs scored, Harry Brook added 111 as England attempted to complete yet another incredible run chase.
At thecrease are bowler Jamie Overton and wicketkeeper Jamie Smith (both not out).
[Getty Images] On day four of the fifth Test, Prasidh Krishna of India celebrates Joe Root’s wicket in England.
In its record-breaking run at Headingley, England defeated 371 in the Leeds opener.
Before India stormed back with a humiliating day five finish as the two batters stumbled with victory in sight, Root and Brook had hit what appeared to be series-clinching Test centuries: Root’s 39th and Brook’s 10th.
A terrible shot also fell to Jacob Bethell, putting more pressure on England.
With apparent ease, England had been set for the second-highest chase in its history, the second-audacious chase of the Bazball era. However, Brook’s late stumble came when he hit Akash Deep with a catch in mid-off and tossed his bat and wicket away. Brook became the fastest man to ten hundreds in 70 years when he scored 100 on his 30th test. On 19 before lunch, Mohammed Siraj caught Brook and carried it over the boundary rope, making India pay dearly for failing to let him leave.
Then, with the hosts still needing another 37 runs, the jittery Bethell pulled a nasty swipe down his stumps. Root was then caught behind in a wicket maiden for Prasidh Krishna (3-109).
On the first episode of the new series, which aired earlier tonight on ITV, Cooking with the Stars contestant Jack Osbourne spoke about his late father, Ozzy Osbourne.
The late Ozzy Osbourne was mentioned by his son Jack Osbourne during a TV appearance that aired tonight. He spoke about his late father whilst competing on Cooking with the Stars.
Jack is among the celebrity contestants on the new series of the ITV show, which launched this evening. The broadcast of the first episode, which had been filmed in advance, comes just over a week after it was announced that his late father Ozzy had died, aged 76, last month.
The Osbournes star Jack spoke about his family, including his dad, during his appearance on the show in a scene that aired tonight. It comes after Sharon Osbourne breaks down in tears at Ozzy’s funeral in heartbreaking scenes.

Jack was asked about his experience with food growing up whilst making risotto on Cooking with the Stars. He told host Emma Willis that his experience was different after his family relocated from the UK to the US when he was 12.
He said, “There were a lot of Birdseye Potato Waffles,” when describing his life before the relocation. He explained to the presenter, “Because I was here until I was 12 and then we went to America]and] it was all taken out,” after receiving a surprise from Emma.
He continued to mention that the family frequently employed chefs, but that they didn’t tend to “last long.” In the opening scene of the episode, Jack said, “We’d go through bouts of having a chef but everyone’s like.”
In our house, chefs don’t typically last long because they are very picky eaters, Jack later said. He then explained to host Emma in the kitchen, “Because all of a sudden my dad is like, I don’t like it anymore,” despite the fact that he is an incredible chef.

Just a few weeks after Jack and some of his family members announced that musician Ozzy had passed away, he had just performed in a farewell show with his band Black Sabbath. A joint statement was released by Sharon Osbourne and four of Ozzy’s children.
Our beloved Ozzy Osbourne passed away this morning, according to the statement, “with more sadness than words can convey.” He was surrounded by love and his family. At this time, we ask that everyone respects our family’s privacy. Jack, Kelly, Aimee, and Louis, among others.
Fans and those close to Ozzy last week sent in tributes in response to the news. Additionally, messages from his former bandmates and other famous people who recently shared memories with the late singer-songwriter were included.

In his hometown of Birmingham, a funeral procession has taken place since then, which started earlier this week. A private funeral followed, which was recently held.
Jack’s stint on Cooking with the Stars marks his first TV appearance since the loss of his father, though it was filmed prior to Ozzy’s death. He competed against reality TV star Jess Wright in the first episode, which also saw EastEnders star Natalie Cassidy take on radio host Jordan North in the kitchen.

What is it about this place?
Finales. The Oval.
Don Bradman walking off for a duck, Curtly Ambrose and Courtney Walsh arm in arm, Stuart Broad denying Australia one last time.
The famous old ground has delivered again. Realistically, England have no right to be in with a shot of yet another successful run chase, but here we are.
Harry Brook and Joe Root. Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna. Kumar Dharmasena and Ahsan Raza. Rain and bad light. 35 runs and four wickets. A long night staring into the soul.
Monday morning will not be as raucous as Sunday evening, but the stakes will not be diminished by having to return at the beginning of the working week.
For England, there are 35 runs standing between them and the biggest series win of the Bazball era.
If they pull it off, it will be the second highest successful chase in their history and will break a 123-year-old record for the best chase by any team on this ground.
They would do it with Ben Stokes not in the team and Chris Woakes absent for most of the match. England’s two best all-rounders of the past 10 years have only two working shoulders between them.
England have a patched up pace attack that is missing Jofra Archer, Brydon Carse and Mark Wood. Their first-choice spinner is injured. Jacob Bethell has been a part-time cricketer for the past two months and batted like it.

At 106-3 on Sunday morning, England were toast, only for Yorkshire’s finest to find individual inspiration to make the unlikely seem probable.
On this ground 20 years ago, another epic series was on a knife edge. On that occasion, it was Kevin Pietersen belting Brett Lee into the stands that secured the Ashes for England. Two decades on and Brook, the modern day spirit of KP, decided attack was the only was to go.
For Root, this Test was always likely to be emotional, a celebration of the life of his mentor Graham Thorpe. How fitting that Root would play with Thorpe-like cool at the home of the great left-hander. Even a heart of stone would have been moved by Root celebrating his hundred by pulling on Thorpe’s trademark headband.
Two contrasting centuries, a tired India attack flogged to all parts. Siraj treading on the boundary rope to reprieve Brook evoked memories of Trent Boult doing the same for Stokes in the 2019 World Cup final – another nerve-shredding Sunday.
When Root and Brook were together, 200 runs to win seemed like a doddle. After they departed, 35 seemed impossible.
India must wonder what they have to do to beat this England team. It was India on the wrong end of a chase of 378 at Edgbaston in 2022, then 371 at Headingley in June.
But something stirred in Siraj, Krishna and Akash Deep. Perhaps it was the beat of the dhol drum that provided the soundtrack to India’s last push.
Brook’s bat went further than the ball when he was caught at mid-off for 111. Bethell looked like what he is – a 21-year-old in his first home Test with only one first-class match since December – in scratching around for five off 31 balls. A wild hack and middle stump removed.
Even the tension got to Root. Play and miss, play and miss, lbw review, edge behind. The Oval came unglued.
It is hard to see how England would have won had the weather not intervened. Smith and Overton, the only Jamies to play Test cricket for England, were left with the task of resisting the touring pacemen and what felt like every Indian in London.

What is left is mainly Surrey v India. Smith, Overton, then Gus Atkinson. Josh Tongue has not been dismissed in his six Test innings, but it’s probably best not to rely on his runs.
Woakes, not seen since leaving the field with his left arm in a makeshift sling on Thursday, was in his whites and ready to go on Sunday. Root said he had some throw downs to work out what was possible.
If Woakes emerges on Monday, it will be the biggest act of bravery by an Englishman since James Bond stayed behind on the island in No Time To Die.
India’s bowlers will have the benefit of a night’s rest and a second new ball available 3.4 overs into the fifth morning. The tourists might not want it, because the old ball has started to hoop.
For England, 35 runs can be dented in a couple of big overs. Batting surely can’t be harder than it was when the players were taken off on Sunday evening.
What are the consequences for less than an hour’s cricket on the fifth day? The difference between 3-1 and 2-2.
The chance of a first series win against India in seven years and a first five-match series win against anyone in the same timeframe. The difference between heading to Australia as winners, or not.
What a way to end it all.
England’s run chase at Headingley, Shubman Gill’s epic at Edgbaston. Aggro and Stokes at Lord’s. Rearguards and handshakegate at Old Trafford.
All down to this.
