Hezbollah supporters protest disarmament ahead of Lebanese government talks

Before a government cabinet meeting on the subject, Hezbollah supporters have gathered in the Lebanese capital to voice their opposition to the organization’s demise.

In response to American pressure on Lebanon to release its weapons, the demonstrations took place in Beirut on Monday night.

Hezbollah’s leadership was cut down by a conflict with Israel last year, which also claimed the lives of thousands of its fighters, and forced tens of thousands of its supporters from their destroyed homes.

The US and Lebanon have been discussing a disarmament roadmap in recent months. The new Lebanoni leadership has vowed to expand its control over all of its territory, but so far it has avoided engaging in combative action against Hezbollah.

According to Zeina Khodr of Al Jazeera, Hezbollah supporters protested because they believe disarmament will affect their standing and security.

According to Khodr, who is based in Beirut, “Hezbollah has made its position clear: it will not defy the law because doing so would benefit Israel’s interests, not Lebanon’s sovereignty.”

Naim Qassem, the head of Hezbollah, reported to the country’s leaders that the organization feels threatened and that funds for reconstruction won’t be provided if they don’t disarm.

Hezbollah reaffirmed its demands prior to any discussion of disarmament, according to Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA) agency prior to Tuesday’s cabinet meeting, including the release of Lebanese prisoners and the resolution of Israel’s nuclear agreement, through Lebanese MP Ali Fayad.

However, the political leadership of Lebanon is urging the change, even if it is forced.

It might be better to centralize the weapons with the Lebanese armed forces, according to Elias Hankash, a second member of the parliament.

“But everything has been done to prevent any clashes with Hezbollah,” he said.

Hezbollah will be defeated by the Lebanese army if and when a political decision is made to forcefully disarm it, according to Khodr.

President Joseph Aoun of Lebanon, who also referred to the subject of disarmament as “i call on all political parties to approach the issue of arms control with full responsibility,” said Aoun on Friday. He also argued that sectarian divisions have had a negative impact on national harmony.

Street violence resulted from the government’s decision to shut down the organization’s telecommunication network in 2008.

Nizar Hani, the president’s agriculture minister, claimed the disarmament process has a set date. He added that hundreds of Hezbollah sites and weapons depots have already been taken over by the Lebanese army.

Hani argued that the organization, which has a significant role in “liberating the land,” needs to be the sole decision-maker for war and peace.

Hezbollah has long been Lebanon’s most powerful military and political force, and Khodr said that despite losing some of its military might in its conflict with Israel last year, it has not completely lost.

Another MP, Mark Daou, told Al Jazeera, “Hezbollah is still strong in the state because of the monopoly] it has] over Shia representation as well as the appointment of leading figures in all of the states.”

Different viewpoints exist regarding Hezbollah’s role and the need for disarmament in Lebanon’s political landscape and society.

Despite the ceasefire that has been in place between the two countries since November 2024, the issue has remained a hot topic in Lebanon’s politics for decades, but there is now a sense of urgency as a result of growing international pressure and growing military pressure from Israel, which frequently targets Hezbollah.

Bannan expects Sheff Wed to play Leicester opener

Barry Bannan, the club’s captain, has stated that he anticipates the club will be able to play Leicester City’s opening game of the championship season on Sunday.

The Owls’ off-season has been turbulent because players and staff members were paid off in May, June, and July, registration restrictions were in place, Hillsborough’s North Stand was closed due to concerns over its structural integrity, and manager Danny Rohl left the club.

The EFL has expressed doubts about the club’s ability to fulfill its goals ahead of its game against Leicester, and a training session behind closed doors with Burnley was called off after the players refused to play.

Bannan responded to Talksport when asked if the players could go on strike and refuse to play for the Foxes. “No, I don’t think so.”

We left the Burnley game at the weekend because it has already happened too frequently, and I believe it is much simpler to do so in a pre-season friendly game than a championship game.

Despite their ongoing financial difficulties, Bannan recently accepted a new contract with the organization.

The 35-year-old, who has made 447 starts for the Owls in ten seasons, claimed he had turned down “interest from elsewhere” to stay at Hillsborough.

Only 15 first-team players are in the Wednesday squad, who have also made HMRC payments and are facing mounting debts.

Bengaluru stops salaries as India’s Super League turmoil deepens

In light of growing uncertainty about the top-flight league’s future, Indian Super League (ISL) side Bengaluru FC has stopped paying the salaries of its first team’s players and staff.

The 2018-19 Indian Super League champions stated in a statement that they had chosen the team “in view of the uncertainty surrounding the Indian Super League season’s future.”

Bengaluru continued, “Running and operating a football club in India has always been a challenging task that we have put all of our resources aside and built up to the end of the season.”

We have no choice but to proceed because there is no consensus on the League’s future, though.

After contract renewal negotiations between the nation’s football federation (AIFF) and Reliance-led Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL), their business partners, were stalled, the ISL was put on hold.

After India’s Supreme Court requested that the AIFF not renew the deal with FSDL until it had issued an order enforcing a separate case to implement a new constitution for the federation, talks to restart.

We are in contact with our players, staff, and their families as we wait for a resolution, and we urge the AIFF and FSDL to resolve this impasse right away, Bengaluru said in a statement.

The Reuters news agency’s requests for comment were not immediately responded to by the AIFF and ISL.

Eight ISL clubs will meet with the AIFF this week to discuss the future of the league, according to reports in Indian media.

Bengaluru’s youth teams, which includes India’s Sunil Chhetri, who has scored a century of goals, were exempt from the salary suspension, according to the city.

80 years after Hiroshima atomic bombing, search for missing continues

On August 6, the first atomic bomb went off in a small, rural island just south of Hiroshima, where thousands of the dead and dying were transported by military vessels with crews trained for suicide attack missions.

Only a few hundred people were still alive when the field hospital closed on August 25 due to poor medical care, according to historical records. In chaotic and rushy operations, they were interred in various locations.

People in the area are still searching for the remains of the missing despite decades of a desire to hold accountable and honor the victims and to comfort survivors who are still betrayed by their loved ones’ memories.

Rebun Kayo, a researcher from Hiroshima University who frequently travels to Ninoshima to search for remains, said, “The war is not over for these people until that happens.”

Kayo has been digging for remains since 2018 on a hillside plot in the forest since a recent morning. He sprayed insect repellent onto rubber boots, a helmet, and a helmet.

Kayo carefully began shoveling gravel from a bathtub-sized hole after praying and planting chrysanthemum flowers. He sifted the soil for bone fragments when it was sufficiently soft.

Around 100 bone fragments have been discovered by Kayo, including pieces from a baby’s jawbone and pieces of skull. The resident of Ninoshima whose father had witnessed soldiers burying bodies transported to the island by boat from Hiroshima 80 years ago suggested that he find the bones there.

Rebun Kayo’s image shows fragments of human bones found on Ninoshima Island to Rebun Kayo, right, an atomic bombing survivor in Hiroshima.

Near the hypocentre, which is located about 10 kilometers (6 miles) north of Ninoshima, were the city and tens of thousands of people killed by the US atomic attack on Hiroshima. By the year’s end, 140 000 people had died.

Within two hours of the blast, Hiroshima’s island’s Number 2 quarantine center’s victims began arriving by boat from there. Its hospitals are filled with patients who have suffered severe injuries. On the island, there were many fatalities.

Eiko Gishi, a 18-year-old boat trainee, was in charge of transporting patients from the pier to the first-aid quarantine area. He and other soldiers used bamboo to create cups and trays.

Gishi wrote in recollections written by the city years later that soldiers first handled bodies slowly and slowly before being overwhelmed by the large number of decomposing corpses and using an incinerator originally built for military horses.

Even this was insufficient, and bodies were soon discovered as they ran out of space, eventually ending up in burial mounds and bomb shelters.

In 1992, a former army medic, Yoshitaka Kohara, wrote, “I was speechless from the shock when I saw the first group of patients that landed on the island.”

He claimed that while I was used to seeing many seriously injured soldiers on the front lines, I had never witnessed anyone in such a cruel and tragic state. It was a “inferno,” the author said.

Japan Hiroshima The Missing
After the first atomic bomb went off in 1980, Ninoshima, an island where thousands of the dead and dying were transported, was visible from the city of Hiroshima.

Only about 500 people were left alive at the facility after it was closed, so Kohara remained there until it was over. When he explained that the war had ended on August 15 to the surviving patients, he said, “Tears flew from their crushed eyes, and nobody said a word.”

The island was used to train suicide attackers using wooden boats meant for deployment in the Philippine Sea and Okinawa, according to Kazuo Miyazaki, a historian and guide from Ninoshima.

In the atomic bombing, Miyazaki, 77, lost several relatives. He has first-hand knowledge of the events that occurred on Ninoshima, a significant army quarantine facility during Japan’s militaristic expansion, from neighbors and relatives. His mother worked at the island’s field hospital, which was a military hospital.

Since 1947, about 3, 000 of the remains of those who were brought to Ninoshima by atomic bombs have been discovered.

Jason Manford has suffered a “heart-stopping moment” as he gets set to join his family on holiday following his recent health concerns. The comedian was forced to cancel a number of shows last-minute last week, causing concern among fans.

He later revealed he had needed surgery to have his appendix removed. The issue initially meant he was unable to carry out four scheduled shows – and also stopped him flying out on holiday with his family.

However, the father-of-six had other ideas and set about created a new travel itinerary so he could get to Portugal for the family getaway without flying.

In his latest update, Jason has revealed he took a ferry to Bilbao for the opening leg of his 33-hour journey. Speaking from his vehicle, Jason told his followers on Twitter/X: “We got pulled into the side and the van searched and whatnot.”

He told his friend, “My padel rackets are looking at me,” when he explained. Jason joked, “I think he thought I was reselling them because I had his kids’ rackets as well.”

The most worrying moment, he continued, was when he went to “what’s in there,” which is similar to a box of Will Powders products. And when I opened this bag of collagen peptide, let me tell you, I had my heart in my mouth.

Jason chuckled as he opened the product, “It’s literally a bag of white powder.” He then made the joke that he had to “get away with it,” laughing indignantly.

Following last week’s cancellations, Jason has kept fans informed about his plans and health concerns. He took to social media to share a photo of himself in a hospital bed after being informed on Thursday that three additional shows were scheduled to be postponed.

Jason wrote, “Appendix surgery all went well, and now I’m recovering with my Vimto, which are all hospitals in Manchester. Although it was a terrifying and agonizing 24 hours, I am grateful to our NHS and my incredible nurse mother, who is a godsend in times of crisis.

He then gave his followers a tongue-in-cheek piece of “advice.” He said, “My advice is to avoid getting appendicitis while driving at 70 mph on the highway!”

Seriously, I’m upset that I had to change the weekend dates, and I apologize for the late notice being sent to so many people in St Albans, Oxford, Lincoln, Skegness, and Kendall Calling.

“I was told not to worry because I believed I could get by on antibiotics and surgery so I could continue doing the shows.” Also, means that I can’t travel to Portugal on Monday to take my family on vacation! That’s life, I suppose. Thank you for all the “Get Well Soon” messages.

Comedy legend John Bishop took up his spot at Kendall Calling despite having three of his four cancelled shows rescheduled.
