Strictly star addresses show ‘curse’ after huge change in marriage

Exclusive: Former X Factor star Fleur East reveals the emotional strains she faced when making her West End role in Tina. Strictly helped her marriage, too.

She’s currently wowing audiences in the West End with her searing portrayal of late superstar Tina Turner at London’s Aldwych Theatre. But Strictly star Fleur East has told how the emotional difficulties of the role pushed her to the brink and caused her to break down in front of the entire cast and crew.

In an exclusive interview with OK !, the 37-year-old reveals that acting out the raw scenes of domestic abuse between Tina and her husband Ike left her feeling triggered. “During rehearsals I did the hospital scene in front of the entire company and I just broke down and I was sobbing, just sobbing,” she says. “I guess it allowed me to tap into the emotions of losing my father, I just really sobbed.”

The star, who recently confirmed her new career goals now she’s a mum, added: “But the director thanked me for allowing myself to be vulnerable in front of so many people, because apparently it’s very hard to do. I am very green to acting.”

Fleur, who is mum to 16-month-old daughter, Nova, lost her father Malcolm at the beginning of lockdown in March 2020. He died after suffering an unexpected heart attack.

Tina – The Tina Turner Musical follows the pop legend’s life, from growing up in the American deep south in the 1950s to becoming the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll, and has scenes of racial tension that Fleur, as a woman of colour, found distressing.

The N-word is a lot of the language used throughout, including the N-word, and in the beginning, when that was said to my face during rehearsals, even though it was in character, it was really difficult.

But Fleur also says she takes great inspiration from Tina’s life journey. “Her story shows that a woman’s career doesn’t have to be over at 40 — in fact Tina’s career took off in her mid-forties. There can be an ageist attitude in showbiz that it’s all over at 40, but at 40 women are in their prime. If you’d told me a year ago that I’d be performing in the West End a year after giving birth I would have laughed. But Tina’s a great example that you can still keep pushing and still make it happen.”

Former X Factor competitor Fleur, who shot to fame as a solo act on the ITV talent show in 2014, will continue playing Tina until September, after which she’ll return to her role hosting Strictly Come Dancing spin-off show It Takes Two , alongside Janette Manrara.

Having also competed on Strictly , finishing as a runner-up in 2022 partnered with Vito Coppola, Fleur, who has been married for six years to French fashion designer Marcel Badiane-Robin, knows only too well the rumours of the show’s famous “curse”. But the singer has some advice for upcoming contestants.

Staying attached to whatever your reality is, she says, is the only way to avoid the Strictly curse. “Because with all these shows — Strictly, the jungle and so on — it’s really intense and it’s like a bubble and it’s easy to think, ‘ Oh this is my life. ‘ However, it isn’t authentic. My husband and sister were the two in the audience every night when I was on Strictly, every live performance for three months.

In fact, for Fleur, the show helped spice up her marriage, and she says that far from falling victim to the curse, the chance to shine was a tonic for their relationship.

Put the “strategy” back into our relationship, she advises me and my husband, “because you’re feeling really fit, your partner is watching you perform at the weekend, and you’re looking amazing because of your amazing wardrobe and make-up team.” There’s a certain quality to falling in love with your partner when you see your partner excelling in a task, and you can’t help but feel proud of them.

The Walthamstow-born star comes from a close-knit family and since the death of her father, she has grown even closer to her mother, Irene, and sister Keshia, with whom she has a haircare brand, Kurl Kitchen. Indeed, Fleur says that her family keep her grounded and she avoids the pitfalls of fame by involving them in all her career decisions.

“Whenever I have an offer I always sit my family down and tell them all about the opportunity. I take their opinions and listen to their arguments while we talk about the benefits and drawbacks. I frequently wear my husband’s clothing on the red carpet because he is a fashion designer. It’s really important to involve my family in my journey”.

Brought up in the 90s in a mixed-race family — her mother is from Ghana and her late father was English — Fleur says she was delighted to see Meghan Markle join the House of Windsor.

“When Meghan married Harry, that was such a big deal in our family, because my mum used to joke when I was growing up that she wanted me to marry Prince William. She’d say, ‘One day you’ll marry Prince William,’ and I’d say, ‘Mum, there’s zero chance of that.’ So when Meghan married Harry, we all thought, ‘Wow, this is major.’ I’ll never forget the ceremony and seeing the Black priest in St George’s Chapel and the gospel choir — for me it was a huge moment for the royal family.”

Fleur, who described herself as “very nervous” when she performed for the royal family at the VE Day celebrations earlier this year, hopes Meghan and Harry will come back to the royal fold and be back on the Buckingham Palace balcony one day.

“I don’t really follow As Ever, but I still think it’s great that Meghan is there as a brown princess. Hopefully they can patch things up with the King. There’s so much we don’t know, we don’t know the relationships and what’s going on behind the scenes.”

Away from the bright lights of the showbiz circuit, Fleur is also fully immersed in motherhood, following the arrival of her daughter Nova last March.

“I had a home birth, it was hard because I had no other form of pain relief but gas and air — and the gas and air only arrived in the last few hours”, she recalls. It was very difficult because I had to use a completely different area of my brain to overcome it. My husband provided incredible support. I was just rolling around naked on the floor until my daughter arrived. However, I consider myself fortunate that nothing wrong happened.

Fleur claims that she is happy to be naked at home because of her upbringing and lacks body confidence issues from growing up. “As it’s been really hot recently, in the house I’ve just been walking around naked”, she says. My husband said, “Look at you, just walking around naked! ” while laughing at me.

And I say, “I had a mother who did the same for me when I was a child.” Mum was very confident and she just walked around naked and it was never spoken about. She never exhibited any body shyness or awareness; after having me and my sister, it was typical to see my mother’s stomach covered in stretchmarks.

“I just had a baby, so I’ve got stretchmarks now.” In a way I am very grateful to my mum for that because I never had body confidence issues growing up and now I am doing the same for my child”.

‘I tried Gordon Ramsay’s roast dinner and immediately sent it back’

A YouTuber who has a taste of one of London’s most well-known restaurants and hotels recently went to Gordon Ramsay’s Heddon Street Restaurant to sample the chef’s roast dinner.

A woman has shared her honest review of Gordon Ramsay’s roast dinner as she sent the meal back at one of his London restaurants. YouTube vlogger Hannah Ricketts visited Heddon Street Restaurant but was left disappointed by the food on offer.

Often seen reviewing some of London’s most well-known hotels and restaurants on her channel, Hannah Ricketts’ latest trip took her to the hustle and bustle of the Soho area of London where the venue is located.

Hannah was initially impressed by the restaurant’s interior when she entered the eatery.

However, after going down the menu, she realized that two courses would cost her £35, which she claimed wasn’t sure was a great offer.

Hannah had ordered a roast dinner, and she was “excited” to start it because she had requested that the beef be “pink.” However, when the YouTuber learned that the Yorkshire pudding was “completely cold,” he quickly became alarmed.

When she dips her finger in the gravy, she discovered that the temperatures were not what she had anticipated.

Hannah then made the dish’s claim that it was “stone cold” to add insult to injury. She did a little lame as she “appreciated” how difficult it must be to keep everything in tact.

The vlogger acknowledged that returning the dish was a little “miffed” and “embarrassed” by the vlogger. However, when it returned, things turned out to be even worse because the mixture of crushed and root vegetables appeared to be “so overcooked, they’re just like mush, like actual mush.”

Due to the sticky toffee pudding she had ordered, Hannah moved on to her dessert. However, because it had been placed on the table while she was still using the restroom, she was depressed before even grabbing a bite.

This week, the 57-year-old has been raving to fans about this best-selling collagen supplement, which the 57-year-old claims “makes a noticeable difference to energy, skin, and joints.”

Collagen has been proven to be a vital structural protein that supports the integrity, elasticity, and strength of the skin, hair, nails, joints, bones, and gut lining. Everyone’s natural collagen levels gradually decrease with age, which can lead to less elasticity in the skin or less flexible joints over time. But, Davina McCall may have found the perfect supplement of hydrolysed collagen peptides that work to support the body’s natural repair, replenish, and renewal processes, helping you to look and feel younger and healthier.

The 57-year-old English TV presenter is a devoted supporter of Ancient + Brave, particularly their best-selling True Collagen Powder, and a trusted brand ambassador. True Collagen is the only type of collagen I like because it’s convenient, tasteless, and works, raved Davina. She continues, “I’m obsessed with True Collagen. I can tell a difference when I take it.

And before you fret that you’ll need a celeb-sized bank account to get True Collagen, this supplement actually costs around £35.60, which includes about 40 servings.

Before entering the villa, Love Island’s Maya Jama uses this ominous setting powder at every opportunity.

Bovine collagen peptides are easily digestible, highly absorbent, and subject to clinical analysis. These peptides, which are once absorbed easily through the gut, act as the foundation for new collagen and stimulate collagen-producing cells, aiding in the development of new skin, hair, and nail cells.

Collagen’s multi-functionality and ripple effect reflect how well it benefits people overall. Beyond just beauty, it improves skin, hair, nails, bones, joints, muscles, gut health, gut health, and even cognitive function. As a result, it can positively influence everyone who enters their thirties, forties, fifties, and beyond because it improves every aspect of their daily health.

As Davina noted, taking powdered collagen allows you to customize the dosage to suit your unique age, health, and lifestyle. Ancient + Brave advises taking 5 to 10 grams of protein per day for regular maintenance. The Ritual scoop contains 8 grams of True Collagen to simplify your daily routine. Simply add 1 ritual scoop or 2 heaped teaspoons to any beverage of your choice or stir into food to take. That is it.

But it isn’t just Davina McCall who is obsessed with this supplement, which she raved on a recent Instagram Reel, makes “a noticeable difference to my energy, skin and joints”. But other accolades come from 5-star reviewers singing this collagen powder’s praises.

One enthralled customer declares, “Amazing!!! I immediately noticed a change in my eyelashes and nails after starting this; I’ve already ordered my refill pouch! Every day, I drink it with my morning cup of coffee.”

This customer exclaims, “I can see and feel the difference after taking this in my morning cup of tea for a month. After exercising, my bones and muscles feel less stiff, my skin feels fresh and dewy, and I feel less foggy-more alert. I highly recommend this amazing company, which cares so much about the crucial aspects of life for overall health, to anyone who wants to buy it.

A third phrase follows: “I’m only two weeks into True Collagen, but I’m really interested in the effects it will have on my skin and nails over the coming months.”

One customer did express disappointment, saying, “Great product, I’ve definitely noticed a difference in my skin, nails, and hair growth. I would certainly suggest. I was disappointed that no powder measuring scoop was provided.

Today’s horoscope for August 3 as Cancer reconsiders a friendship

One star sign appears in support of a family member in today’s horoscope for Sunday, August 3, while the other embraces the beauty of nature.

Find out what’s written in the stars with our astrologer Russell Grant(Image: Daily Record/GettyImages)

One star sign must face the realities of working life on August 5 while another chooses to start something fresh.

There are 12 zodiac signs – Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces – and the horoscopes for each can give you the lowdown on what your future holds, be it in work, your love life, your friends and family or more.

These daily forecasts have been compiled by astrologer Russell Grant, who has been reading star signs for over 50 years. From Aries through to Pisces, here’s what today could bring for your horoscope – and what you can do to be prepared.

Aries (Mar 21 – Apr 20)

You yearn to get rid of difficult and time-consuming tasks. It’s tempting to let go of responsibilities and head somewhere else as the Sun shines through your window. You must accept the reality that work has to come first for the time being. There will still be time to relax, but not right away.

Taurus (Apr 21 – May 21)

You have a chance to enjoy the great outdoors thanks to events and family gatherings. Take advantage of this opportunity to appreciate nature’s beauty. A social or cultural event held within four walls might be a big disappointment if you decline an invitation to travel.

Gemini (May 22 – June 21)

You are willing to sacrifice everything for your family, even if it means making changes to your plans at the last minute. A niece or nephew’s needs might require some time, perhaps. They might find themselves struggling without your personal involvement in their lives.

Cancer (June 22 – July 23)

A conversation or something you hear or see will point out to you that a ‘friend’ is not as trustworthy as they appear. Unexpectedly, the truth will be revealed in a new way or context. For instance, a colleague’s bad intentions could cause issues at work.

Leo (July 24 – Aug 23)

You should take into account the possibility to do something different even though it won’t be unexpected. Stop looking for justifications, and take the plunge. A change of setting will help you unwind and recharge, whether it’s for business or for a family vacation. Additionally, this will lead to brand-new friendships that will be exciting.

Virgo (Aug 24 – Sept 23)

You’ve been considering it for some time, and you’re now motivated to start a new diet and exercise regimen. Enjoy the season’s warmth with delicious salads and fresh fruits. Make the most of outdoor activities and cherish happy memories with loved ones.

Libra (Sept 24 – Oct 23)

You are becoming more aware of the difficulties faced by an elderly neighbor or relative. If you can’t give them the care they need on a regular basis, you might consider how they can get the care they need now. They will appreciate your assistance if you can walk them through every step.

Scorpio (Oct 24 – Nov 22)

You will make it your goal to create a cheerful and tranquil environment in your surroundings, wherever you are. A meaningful encounter with someone who could turn out to be a romantic partner or steadfast friend will result from being open to new relationship possibilities.

Sagittarius (Nov 23 – Dec 21)

You and a friend will change the plans you two made for the day. You’ll experience a brief period of disappointment. You have been waiting for this chance to invest in yourself. Explore new interests, join a craft group, or learn how to organize a community group. The trick is to realize your untapped potential.

Capricorn (Dec 22 – Jan 20)

You’ll have a lot to think about after having a sincere and heartfelt discussion with your partner or a close friend. Long-standing problems will finally be discovered, revealing truths about your relationship and your self. You must now be able to handle and deal with this now that you are aware of it.

Aquarius (Jan 21 – Feb 19)

Avoid being drawn to buy things you don’t need. Although there is a strong desire to purchase expensive items, consider the potential effects on your family’s finances. Protect your finances. Before making crucial decisions, be patient.

Pisces (Feb 20 – Mar 20)

You’re considering your diet while you’re thinking about it a lot. When necessary changes are needed, housemates will be there to help. Be cautious when expressing your opinions at work because you don’t want to make enemies of your coworkers.

US museum denies political pressure in removal of Trump impeachment display

The parent organization of a highly regarded history museum in the United States has refuted allegations that political pressure led to the removal of a display about US President Donald Trump’s impeachments.

The National Museum of American History in Washington, DC, the Smithsonian Institution announced on Saturday that it had removed the “temporary” placard because it had failed to adhere to the museum’s “appearance, location, timeline, and overall presentation” requirements.

It “abhorred the view of the objects inside its case” and was incongruent with other sections of the exhibit. We removed the placard because of these reasons, the organization stated in a statement.

No administration or other government officials ever asked us to take any of the content out of the exhibit.

The impeachment section of the museum will be updated in the coming weeks to “reflect all impeachment proceedings in our nation’s history,” according to the Smithsonian Institution, which manages 21 museums and the National Zoo.

The museum removed a direct reference to Trump’s impeachments last month, according to The Washington Post’s report on Thursday, which led to the museum’s incorrect statement that “only three presidents have seriously faced removal.”

According to an unnamed source with knowledge of the exhibit plans, the Smithsonian conducted a “content review that the White House requested in response to pressure to remove an art museum director.”

The museum’s decision to remove the exhibit drew swift opposition, with Trump’s supporters claiming that it was the most recent capitulation to the dictates of an authoritarian leader.

Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said on Friday, “You can run, but you can’t hide from the judgment of history.”

The American people will never forget that you were impeached, not once, but twice, according to my message to the president.

As part of his transformative “Make America Great Again” campaign, Trump has accelerated to more direct control over government, media, and cultural institutions.

The US president signed an executive order in March to end “improper ideology” at the Smithsonian Institution’s facilities and prevent funding for exhibits that “degrade shared American values” or “divide Americans based on race.”

Trump faced two House of Representatives impeachments during his first term, in 2019 and 2021, but the Senate found him guilty on both counts.

He was the only US president to have twice been impeached, joining Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton as the third US president to have done so.
