‘England chasing history after backing themselves into a corner’

Ollie Pope cheekily asked Ben Stokes if he could have the captain’s suite in the team hotel when he learned that he would take over as England’s head coach this week. Stokes resisted.

Pope was probably aware of his hiding place. Pope would have been aware of the biggest challenge that anyone who replaces Stokes as England captain will face, not having Stokes as the all-rounder, since this is his fifth time taking the lead in the final test against India at The Oval.

The condensed nature of the schedule has not helped this series, which has been a grueling one. Both sides have been damaged.

In the series, England paid for the loss of Stokes with almost 315 more overs than India. Rishabh Pant and Nitish Kumar Reddy both experienced personal injury issues, while Jasprit Bumrah was only allowed to play three Test matches.

The act is now complete. Although England has recent success in run chases, it would be truly remarkable to knock off 374 on this oval pitch.

Day four with a 50-0 record would have been a promising start, but day three’s loss of Zak Crawley’s penultimate delivery had the potential to see India draw level at 2.

The home side can point to the team’s exhausted fast bowling roster. Young back-ups like Josh Hull and Sonny Baker have had a rocky start, just like Mark Wood and Olly Stone, who have missed the entire summer of Tests.

In the fourth Test at Old Trafford, Brydon Carse and Jofra Archer had to endure the bowlers’ graveyard. It seems a week later that one of them would have been wiser to save for The Oval, but hindsight is wonderful. Although England were hoping for the win, it was a loss for the series. It might have been a different story if Ravindra Jadeja had been captured on the final day. Drops have become a constant theme.

Chris Woakes, the squad’s oldest member, was chosen to lead the charge against India in five of the five Tests that England could have requested. A weary 36-year-old fast bowler’s constitutional right to pursue every lost cause to the boundary should be a question, but it would have been impossible to pass a law to apply to him.

The burden was transferred to Josh Tongue, Jamie Overton, and Gus Atkinson. The trio delivered a heartfelt effort on Saturday in particular, without skipping a beat.

Overton’s 38 is his most for three years, while Atkinson’s 48.4 overs and Tongue’s 46 are both man’s most in first-class cricket.

Atkinson recalled the bowler who oversaw last year’s Test match record. His performance defied any doubts he had had the previous two months without playing cricket and suggested he might have played at Old Trafford. For Perth’s first Ashes Test, he should take the new ball.

In the fifth Test, Tongue and Atkinson each took 16 wickets. Overton had no luck to have three catches dropped, but he did little to disprove the notion that he had been an odd pick in the pre-match.

England did not require his hit-the-deck style in circumstances that necessitated a full length, despite Surrey’s man’s inability to give more. His recent history, which included two first-class wickets in four matches over the course of almost two years, did not suggest that he had a strong pedigree.

Overton has surpassed Matthew Potts and Sam Cook in the pecking order over the course of the summer, despite the slight awkwardness of the comparison between the two. How Potts and Cook might have arrived here, one wonders. The pitch was not seen until the day before the game because England was dealing with Stokes’ injury’s fallout.

Potts has a central contract. He vanished during the winter, playing Tests in Hamilton and Multan against Pakistan and New Zealand. The rumor is that England has decided he lacks the skills to handle the new ball and is neither quicky enough to be a battering ram.

Cook, who has a lot of county cricket experience, took one wicket in his 31 overs against Zimbabwe on his Test debut in May. If winning that was his only chance to impress, he chose a bad game at a bad time. If England had decided against him solely based on that, that would be harsh.

An Ashes series from November that will be just as relentless as this one will teach about resource management.

England must transport their bowlers to Perth before moving them somewhere else in Australia. Stokes is in a serious doubt, Stokes is attempting to recover from knee surgery, and Wood has experienced a setback. England will continue to keep its eyes on Archer, Carse, Atkinson, and Tongue unharmed for the next three months of white ball cricket, both in this and New Zealand, in October.

England will need to strike a balance between wanting to get off to a good start and wanting to keep on course once they are in Australia. The final three tests are consecutive.

This week there have been more Ashes pointers. England’s batters, bar Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley, struggled with the movement they could expect to face down under.

Joe Root will surely have to deal with even worse from the Australians, even though Prasidh Krishna’s words shook him. Following Steve Smith and Nathan Lyon’s chirp, David Warner fired shots at his former team-mates on Saturday.

The six drops in the second inning of the fifth Test are a major issue because England cannot win in Australia if they don’t catch any balls. One of them, by sub-fielder Liam Dawson, will affect his ability to become the second spinner. After his first five-test series as a keeper, Jamie Smith appeared worn out behind the stumps. Another Australian heat wave awaits.

England’s elite run-chasers must now face the difficult task of completing their greatest goal.

Callum Wilson has been signed to a one-year contract with West Ham from former clubs Newcastle and Bournemouth.

The 33-year-old free agent left Newcastle last year after not agreeing a new deal.

The striker was sat behind Alexander Isak in the pecking order for only 18 Premier League appearances last term.

However, Wilson completed his medical on Saturday with the Hammers and accepted a season-long contract.

“I’m excited to be joining a sizable football team like West Ham,” Wilson said.

I’m happy to be a part of a club that has a passion for hard work, dedication, and success like mine.

“The squad has such talent,” he said. And of course, Graham Potter has arrived as the new manager, who is making everyone a team and working together to achieve the goal of finishing as high as possible in the league.

Wilson, who signed for Newcastle in a £20m deal from Bournemouth in 2020, scored 49 goals in 130 appearances between the 2018 and 2023 caps.

Before joining West Ham, he attracted the attention of other Premier League clubs and had options in Major League Soccer (MLS).

Ukraine says defence sector corruption scheme uncovered

Just days after lawmakers restored the independence of the country’s two main investigative bodies, several officials were taken into custody in Ukraine as part of a “large-scale corruption scheme” in the defense sector.

In a joint statement released on Saturday, the National Anti-Corruption Agency (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAP) announced that they had conducted four arrests in connection with the scheme, which involved the purchase of military drones and signal jamming devices.

According to them, “the purpose of the scheme was to conclude state contracts with supplier companies at purposefully exorbitant prices,” adding that the suspects had received kickbacks of up to 30% of the contract amounts.

A sitting lawmaker, two local officials, and an unnamed number of National Guard personnel were among the people who were caught taking bribes, according to NABU and SAPO. In the statement from Saturday, the suspects were not named.

The suspected members of the National Guard were also suspended by the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

The president of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy was criticized last month for attempting to oust the anticorruption organizations from his prosecutor-general’s authority.

After Zelenskyy’s decision led to the first anti-government demonstrations in Ukraine since Russia’s invasion in 2022, the organizations regained their autonomy.

Zelenskyy, who enjoys far-reaching wartime powers, initially felt the agencies’ inefficiency and “Russian influence” required to be removed.

He then claimed he had heard the complaints of the angry people and filed a bill that restored the agencies’ independence, which was approved by lawmakers on Thursday.

The law passed on Thursday gives anticorruption institutions all the tools they need to succeed in a true fight against corruption, Zelenskyy said.

The about-face was praised by Ukraine’s European allies after concerns were raised about the agencies’ original defanging.

By limiting the authority of Ukraine’s antigraft authorities, top officials had informed Zelenskyy.

Grammy nominee ’embarrassed’ as tour cancelled after plea to fans over gigs

Julia Michaels-based JP Saxe’s solo tour has been canceled, according to Saxe, whose song If the World Was Ending was nominated for a Grammy in 2019.

Singer-songwriter JP Saxe has announced that his tour has now been cancelled. The Grammy-nominated artist was due to embark on a series of headline shows next month but has told fans that they will no longer be going ahead.

JP, 32, announced the Make Yourself at Home tour in June after his song If the World Was Ending, which featured his ex-partner Julia Michaels, was well-known after its release in 2019. In September and October, he was scheduled to travel to a number of cities in his home country, including Canada, the US, Brazil, and a number of other nations.

He however announced yesterday that the tour was cancelled and has said that he “didn’t sell enough tickets,” after sharing concern over the prospect. It comes after Taylor Swift sparks engagement rumours as fans spot Travis Kelce’s lock screen.

This week, JP informed fans that the tour was in danger of being postponed. He stated in a social media video, “I’m very embarrassed to tell you this, but I’m going to tell you anyway.” It will be canceled if I don’t sell my tour in the next 48 hours, or maybe even 20,000.

If we’re just not in a position to sell out these two or three cap venues, that’s fine, he continued. I’ve always wanted to connect deeply but not widely, and I always do that.

In a message to fans, JP stated that “just in case” they were putting off purchasing tickets until closer to the performances wouldn’t work because there wouldn’t be a show. He continued, “I’m grateful to you for caring about my songs and I hold on to a sliver of hope that I will see you in the fall,” depending on whether that happens or not.

The singer stated in the caption of the video, which was shared on platforms like TikTok, that he didn’t want to halt the tour. JP stated in the post that he didn’t want to cancel this s**t at the time, “48 hrs… f*** being cool about it.”

Later, he later admitted that his friends had told him to “ask for assistance” from fans, and that he had just released a second update yesterday. In the more recent video, he stated, “We sold a few thousand additional tickets over the past few days, and I’m beyond grateful to everyone who purchased one.” These few thousand tickets serve as a reminder that the façade of success can sometimes outweigh the power of failure.

The performance also served as a reminder of how “wonderful” it can be to ask others for assistance, according to the performer. He also wrote about how a “community come together” and described it as the “nicest the internet has ever been” for him.

Although the tour won’t continue, JP continued, “But what those few thousand tickets are not is enough to save this tour.” I apologize a lot. I apologize so much. A dorky ginger Canadian will express his or her full gratitude for every ticket purchased.

He continued, “I’m still a little embarrassed. I have a lot of ambition to prevent this from happening again, and I’m also trying my hardest to make the most of it so the squad can grow and these full rooms can be created. In the meantime, I love you and thank each and every one of you who purchased a ticket.

JP apologized once more in the caption, saying he was “so appreciative” of how his fans have “shown up” lately. He responded, “I’ve still got a lot in me to share with you thanks for giving a damn about my music.”

In a guest column for Variety, published yesterday, JP said that his team were told last week that ticket sales “weren’t where they needed to be”. He said that it was suggested that he cancel the tour and then “try again next year”.

Before revealing publicly that the tour was in danger, he claimed it was “more embarrassing” and that he had “shot too high” in retrospect based on his initial post. JP claimed that after telling his fans, it “felt strangely empowering” and that the experience would benefit his “growth.”

In a recent article, JP stated that “applause for success is fantastic. However, receiving praise for honesty in failure is more interesting. He continued, “It’s not as good for my ego as it is for my growth,” but perhaps it’s better.”

Sources close to the presenter, 30, say she’s keen to follow in the footsteps of influencers such as Molly-Mae Hague, who make millions from their content. Maya even teased the plans on Instagram, calling out the “lurking likers”.

She wrote: “10 million eyes on my last post and 115 million in the last 30 days. The lurking to like ratio is crazy. Maybe I do need to start YouTube so I can convert the watchers to money.” It comes after Maya looked happier than ever as she shared a series of romantic snaps with Man City boyfriend Ruben Dias.

The insider claimed that Maya is “very business-minded.” She realizes that Instagram is not financially viable, but she wants to maximize her potential to make money.

More than two million people subscribe to Molly-Mae’s YouTube channel, which generates significant income through brand acquisitions and ad revenue.
