Do direct Putin-Trump talks in Alaska signal ‘symbolic victory for Russia’?

Before stepping back into the Oval Office in January, United States President Donald Trump promised numerous times that he would broker a truce between Russia and Ukraine “within 24 hours”.

Since then, as the war has escalated and peace has looked increasingly distant, he recently claimed that pledge was sarcastic.

But a meeting between Trump and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, in Alaska on Friday has raised hopes among some Russians.

“It may be a signal for a restart of relations,” Moscow resident Damir Gurin said. “Formally, Washington has all the legal mechanisms to lift sanctions and restrictions at once, opening the way to the deal of the century.

“This is no longer just diplomacy. It is a redrawing of the geopolitical map.”

Others are more sceptical.

“Between Putin’s senile stubbornness and Trump’s spontaneousness, everything can still change 100 times over,” said Katherine, a St Petersburg pensioner who asked that her surname be withheld because she feared repercussions. “God willing, they agree to end the war, of course.”

In recent months, Trump has expressed growing frustration with Putin’s unwillingness to halt attacks on Ukraine, calling recent strikes on Kyiv “disgusting”. On July 31, Russian drones and missiles killed dozens of civilians in the Ukrainian capital in one of the worst wartime assaults.

Last month, Trump threatened more sanctions unless Russia stops the fighting within 50 days. That deadline, mocked by senior Russian politicians, has now passed. New sanctions have not materialised, but 50 percent tariffs were slapped on India last week to punish the country for buying Russian oil.

Even so, Trump has suggested a peace deal is close.

“We’re gonna get some [land] back. We’re gonna get some switched,” the US president said at the White House on Friday. “There’ll be some swapping of territories to the betterment of both [Russia and Ukraine],” he added, without elaborating on what land would be given up by whom.

“I’ve already seen memes how we’ll swap the Crimea for Alaska,” Anya, a Muscovite, quipped.

According to Ilya Budraitskis, a Russian political scientist and visiting scholar at the University of California at Berkeley, the irreconcilable positions of the warring parties make real compromise unlikely. Instead, the Alaska summit will have a more symbolic nature, he predicted.

“From Putin’s side, this shows the restoration of his position in the world, that he comes to American territory and meets with the president, who shows signs of respect. It is clear this meeting is a symbolic victory for Russia by the very fact it is being held, regardless that no one expects any results from it,” Budraitskis told Al Jazeera.

“It is a proof of the effectiveness of [Putin’s] strategy, which is that there is no need to make any compromises – you need to stubbornly repeat your maximalist positions, and at some point, everyone will be so tired of this that they will be forced to accept them, and the international isolation of Russia will gradually disappear.”

Budraitskis believes the meeting holds a similar value for Trump.

“The fact he is confused about whether Russia should give up its territory shows he doesn’t take any meaningful agenda of this meeting very seriously,” he continued.

“What the symbolic meaning of this meeting is for Trump is in showing he continues to play a key role in the situation in Ukraine, that he is the only person who is capable of talking to Putin, whom Putin listens to and respects.”

While Russia currently occupies vast chunks of eastern Ukraine, Ukraine no longer occupies any Russian territory after being ousted from the Kursk region of western Russia earlier this year.

Bloomberg reported on Friday that Russian and US diplomats were hammering out a deal that would allow Russia to keep the territory it has conquered so far, halting its invasion along the existing battle lines in the Kherson and Zaporizhia regions of southern Ukraine.

The Polish online newspaper Onet said Trump envoy Steve Witkoff proposed to Putin a de facto recognition of what the Kremlin considers its “new territories” and the lifting of sanctions.

Officially, the Kremlin lays claim to the entire Donbas area of eastern Ukraine. If Ukraine were to abide by those terms, its forces would have to retreat from those parts of its Luhansk and Donetsk regions still under its control.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy fired back in a Telegram post on Saturday, reiterating: “Ukrainians will not gift their land to the occupiers.”

But Zelenskyy will not be present at Friday’s meeting.

“The summit will be held without the participation of the EU countries and Ukraine,” stated Zaurbek Khugaev, director of the Digoria Platform think tank.

“This is an eloquent signal that both Trump and Putin understand the destructive position of Zelenskyy and European officials for the development of mutually acceptable agreements, who, by the way, are persistently trying to include the Ukrainian leader in the agenda of the event.”

Budraitskis said certain token measures may be granted without seriously hindering the war effort.

“It’s possible that Putin will take some symbolic steps, for example limiting or temporarily refraining from bombing Ukraine, because, in general, this aerial warfare does little to help advance Russian troops.”

Although Putin and Trump have spoken several times by phone this year, Friday’s talks will mark the first face-to-face meeting between the two statesmen since they met in Osaka, Japan, in 2019. Putin is wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague over alleged war crimes in Ukraine, but because the United States is not a member of the ICC, it is under no obligation to arrest him.

Alexey Nechayev, a political scientist and member of the Digoria Expert Club, said Ukraine is unlikely to be the only item on Friday’s agenda. Also of interest are arms control treaties, the situation in the Middle East and of course, given how the meeting is taking place in Alaska, the Arctic Circle.

“Finally, the key issue for Russia is the new security framework in Europe,” Nechayev said.

Princess Andre is setting her sights high, reportedly aiming to become Britain’s answer to Kylie Jenner.

The 18-year-old daughter of Peter Andre and Katie Price has launched a new ITV show, The Princess Diaries, spotlighting her efforts to build a cosmetics empire and step into the beauty industry spotlight.

The new reality TV show, which has already been deemed a hit with viewers, follows the teen’s journey from celebrity daughter to budding entrepreneur. The series documents Princess as she works toward launching a cosmetics line, navigating fame, business, and growing up in the public eye after a traumatic childhood after her parent’s bitter divorce.

Now, insiders have revealed that they have no doubt that Princess has the ability to be the UK’s answer to Kylie Jenner. It comes after Katie raged ‘I’m not the enemy’ as she lashed out at kids over ‘control’.

They added: “When Katie says that Princess is ‘following in her footsteps,’ she isn’t.”

Her show has already made waves, reaching number one on ITV after its debut which has proved her popularity with a younger audience.

“She is gonna be like the next big thing, someone who young people can relate to,” the insider added. However, behind the scenes, family tensions have surfaced between Princess and her famous mum.

Katie has publicly admitted that she feels excluded from Princess’s career and frustrated by how her involvement has been blocked by her daughter’s management who also represent her ex-husband Peter Andre.

Speaking on her podcast, Katie said: “I don’t need it rubbed in my face of everyone playing happy families.”

Despite her emotional reaction, she maintains support for her children’s success. “I want the best for Junior and Princess, always, I’ll never get in the way of that,” she insisted.

Katie described feeling deeply hurt over being sidelined: “When your kids grow up, you’re there for everything… Knowing what my career has been, Princess has taken that same path, which I absolutely love and adore of Princess.”

Yet, she says she’s been blocked from every part of the process: “I have not been allowed to go on any photoshoot, no signings or Superdrug openings or anything like that.

“I’m not allowed and I’m not welcome. They think I am trash basically.”

Brooklyn Beckham ‘besotted and submissive’ at vow renewal to Nicola Peltz

Brooklyn Beckham and his wife Nicola Peltz renewed their vows at a ceremony officiated by her father recently, with the special occasion coming after three years of marriage

A body language commentator has shared their thoughts on photos of Brooklyn Beckham at his vow renewal with Nicola Peltz(Image: nicolaannepeltzbeckham/Instagram)

“Displays of besotted happiness” from Brooklyn Beckham at his vow renewal are “aimed at suggesting his world is now complete,” a body language expert has deciphered.

Brooklyn, 26, and Nicola Peltz, 30, celebrated their third wedding anniversary in April after getting married in 2022 and have recently renewed their vows. A source told the Mirror that it was a moment to “celebrate their love and commitment,” as well as a way to “create a meaningful memory together.”

Photos from the special occasion were shared yesterday by the couple. They revealed that her parents and siblings were present, with one photo having showed Nicola’s father Nelson Peltz, 83, officiating the ceremony. Other guests at the vow renewal included actor Adrien Brody, 52.

Brooklyn’s family were noticeably absent from the photos though, with them having seemingly not been involved. It comes amid rumours of a rift between him and his parents David Beckham, 50, and Victoria Beckham, 51.

Body language commentator Judi James has since shared her thoughts on the photos. She suggested to the Mirror that Brooklyn wanted to “show off his dedication and love” for Nicola, adding that his displays of happiness at the event “look aimed at suggesting his world is now complete”.

Judi said: “Many newlyweds crave a second go at their wedding, minus all the stresses and worries of the event itself. Or they loved every minute and want a re-run of the best day of their lives. But actually doing it and without one set of parents or even family is understandably rare as a re-run would normally be seen as a ‘better’ option.”

Speaking about the photos, she continued: “Brooklyn’s body language in these idyllic photos suggest a man keen to message ‘who said it wouldn’t last?’ despite only being married for three years. We see him self-displayed in Mr Darcy mode with his baggy white shirt as he leans over the pool table like some bodice-ripper hero and we see him partying with A-list buddies to show he doesn’t need the Beckham name to pull in the top-tier guests.”

Further sharing her thoughts, she said: “More than anything though, he seems to want to show off his dedication and love for his bride. With Nicola he adopts poses that look besotted and submissive. His hand is laid on her chest in an act of dedication as he stands behind her and while she smiles in profile his eyes gaze down on her face with a look of love.”

Judi continued: “Taking the vows, Nicola is upright and pitch-perfect elegant while Brooklyn leans forward with his hands clenched like an excited teen. Even his kiss as they dance together shows him clutching her and pressing his closed lips against hers, almost like a guy on a first date.”

She concluded by addressing the absence of the Beckhams. Judi said: “These idyllic wedding pics come with a huge Beckham-sized chunk missing but Brooklyn’s displays of besotted happiness look aimed at suggesting his world is now complete.”

The absence of his parents from the photos comes amid rumours of a rift between Brooklyn and his family. It’s been claimed that he’s grown “so close” to his in-laws, with a source once telling the Mirror: “He just doesn’t feel his family have treated Nicola well and now that he’s grown so close to her family in the States, he doesn’t really feel like he fits into the Beckham family right now.”

Hulk Hogan’s ex-wife Linda shares heartbreaking message on late star’s birthday

Hulk Hogan’s ex-wife, Linda, has paid tribute to the WWF star – who died last month after suffering a heart attack – on what would have been the former wrestler’s 72nd birthday

Hulk Hogan’s ex-wife, Linda, has shared a tearjerking message on what would have been the late star’s 72nd birthday. The WWF icon left his legion of loyal fans bereft when his death was announced last month as it was revealed that the former wrestler had suffered a heart attack.

Linda, who was married to Hogan, real name Terry Bollea, from 1983 to 2009, admitted she was “devastated” after he died and has expressed her emotions again with a poignant post on Instagram.

Sharing a snap of the pair, wrapped around each other from 1981, Linda wrote: “Me and Hulkster… 1981 Happy Birthday Terry. I love and miss you so much…” It comes after the star’s daughter, Brooke, revealed her final conversation with her dad.

Linda, who shares daughter Brooke, 37, and son Nick, 35, with Hogan, admitted she was shocked to hear of her ex’s death. Taking to Instagram again, she wrote: “I had no idea he would pass away this soon.

“We all really thought he would make a come back! Big surprise. We are all devastated. It’s hitting me so hard.”

Linda also revealed that she and the WWE legend were not on speaking terms when he died and explained that their son would “tell me things and vice versa”.

Revealing Hogan was “the only man for me”, she said: “I still felt… although broken… we still were a family. It’s so hard to know he’s just gone. I tried to stay strong for Nick… but I’m melting down now. It’s very sad. I love you Hulkster. You were my man. The only man for me. RIP.”

Linda was among the mourners at Hogan’s funeral service in Florida last week, although Brooke chose not to attend to “honour” her father – who “hated the morbidity” of funerals.

She penned on Instagram: “My father hated the morbidity of funerals. He didn’t want one.

“And although I know people grieve in many ways – and I’m so grateful for all the celebrations and events organised to honour him – as his daughter, I had to make my own decision to honour him the best and most genuine way I knew how… privately… the way that made me feel the closest to him.”

It comes as Jackass Bam Margera shared an eerie sign that the late wrestler had made his presence known at the funeral.

Margera spotted a sign in the clouds, which resembled an image of Hulk Hogan offering his signature pose, with one hand pointing to the air and a clenched fist behind him.

Captioning his upload, Margera penned: “The cloud outside of Hulk Hogan’s funeral at Indian Rocks, Fl. Wow! You see what I see?? If this isn’t a sign then I don’t know what is.”

Wales striker Barton ends playing career

Wales striker Kayleigh Barton has announced her retirement from playing football.

The 37-year-old was named as head coach of Brighton-based Saltdean United Women earlier this summer after leaving Charlton Athletic.

And the 89-cap international has confirmed she has brought an end to her playing career.

“To everybody that has been on this incredible journey through football with me, I think it’s time to tell you that I’ve made the decision to hang up my boots,” said Barton.

“Ever since a young age, I’ve always loved football. From playing in the garden with my younger brothers, having the first letter for my Cymru age group call up, to representing the senior team at our first ever major finals.

Barton – who represented Cardiff City, Yeovil Town, Chieti Calcio Femminile, Brighton and Charlton during her club career – was a pivotal figure in helping earn Rhian Wilkinson’s side qualification for Euro 2025.

The forward netted four times in qualifying and went on to feature in each of the three group stage matches in Switzerland against Netherlands, France and England.

She scored her 22nd and final international goal from the penalty spot to earn Wales a point against Sweden in the Nations League in February.

Barton added: “To my friends and family… I can’t thank you enough for always supporting me throughout my football career. To the two people who have been there from the very beginning: you’ve travelled the country to watch me play, and even now, you continue to support every decision I make. Thank you – from the bottom of my heart.

“International football… What a journey it’s been. I’ve experienced incredible highs and tough lows, but those moments are what made this path so special. From receiving my first call-up, to seeing our names on the back of shirts, to being part of history with our national team – every moment will stay with me.

“To our amazing fans – the Red Wall – thank you for your unwavering support. You’ve stood by us through it all, and I’m grateful I had the chance to see you cheer us on at a major tournament. That will stay with me forever.

Barton also thanked “every player I’ve shared the pitch with” adding she was grateful to her coaches “for challenging me, for pushing me beyond my comfort zone, and for shaping me into the player and coach I am today.”

She concluded: “In football, you fight and go through it for so many years. There are so many highs, so many lows, but to finally achieve something that you’ve always wanted to do as a young girl and represent your country on the world stage. It means everything.

“I’ll definitely miss you all, but I think now is the time to say goodbye. Diolch am bopeth (thank you for everything).”

Barton holds a Uefa A coaching licence and will work closely with Saltdean’s first team managers Katie McIntyre and Amy Green.

From supermarkets to the international stage – Analysis

Kayleigh Barton retires having seen her footballing ambitions realised in playing for Wales at a major tournament at Euro 2025 in Switzerland.

As a younger player, Barton may never have even dreamed that would be possible as one of the key Wales players who progressed from amateur to professional status as the women’s game grew and grew during her career.

Barton worked in supermarkets and was training as a plumber before switching to football full-time and she’s been a mainstay as the Wales women’s team have enjoyed a period of unparalleled progress.

Barton played for Wales 89 times over 13 years and whether playing as an all-action midfielder or striker, no player ever beat Barton for effort, endeavour or passion for playing for Wales.
