At least 34 Colombian soldiers kidnapped after clashes with FARC dissidents

According to Defense Minister Pedro Sanchez, at least 34 government soldiers have been kidnapped by armed civilians in a jungle in southeast Colombia following clashes that resulted in the deaths of 11 fighters, including the head of a dissident faction of the former FARC rebel group.

Members of the Central General Staff (EMC), a group of former combatants with the left-wing FARC, and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, who were involved in the fighting, who were protesting a peace deal with the government in a rural area of the province of Guaviare on Sunday.

After an EMC commander and ten other rebels were killed in a military operation, Sanchez claimed on Tuesday that the soldiers were being driven out of the area.

Sanchez told reporters, “This is a criminal, illegal action by people dressed as civilians.” This is a kidnapping, I say.

The jungle region is renowned for its extensive coca crops, the main ingredient in cocaine production, and is regarded as a strategic corridor for drug trafficking.

In a southwest mountainous area known for its cocaine production and one of the most tense in the country’s ongoing security crisis, the army claimed 57 soldiers were seized by civilians in a similar abduction in June.

The EMC, the main FARC dissident group, is the main source of orders for the Colombian army to continue serving the civilians there.

Despite the peace agreement with the FARC nine years ago when it was Colombia’s largest rebel group, armed groups continue to exist in Colombia after a six-decade conflict that has resulted in the deaths of more than 450, 000 people.

In two attacks attributed to dissident FARC factions, at least 18 people were killed and dozens were hurt last week.

A vehicle loaded with explosives went off on Thursday near a military aviation school in Cali, the third-largest city in the country, injuring 71 people and killing six people, according to the mayor’s office.

In the municipality of Amalfi in the Antioquia department, a drone shot down a National Police Black Hawk helicopter hours earlier, killing 12 police officers.

Sheffield Wednesday fans boycott EFL Cup match

As protests against the club’s ownership continued, thousands of Sheffield Wednesday fans canceled their attendance for Hillsborough’s match against Leeds United on Tuesday.

Since the start of the season, Owls supporters have been vocal about their dissatisfaction with Dejphon Chansiri as owner.

The EFL has imposed a number of sanctions on the club after making third consecutive payments of wages.

A banner emblazoned in their opening Championship game against Leicester was displayed, and fans recently staged a mock funeral procession with a coffin, which they claimed represented “the death of the football club.”

On their website, the Sheffield Wednesday Supporters’ Trust urged fans to boycott the game and instead donate the tickets to Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity.

BBC Radio 5 live commentator Alistair Bruce-Ball, who was covering the game at Hillsborough, said, “I can’t imagine many Sheffield Wednesday against Leeds games that have ever been played in a Hillsborough stadium like this.”

“It was because I didn’t go to this game,” the protester said.

“I’m pretty sure that the home support may far outnumber the Leeds fans, who are about 3, 000 of them.”

Many fans have been “torn” by the protest, according to Rob Staton, a reporter for BBC Radio Sheffield.

Fans can’t attend the away games if they don’t come, he said, and that’s where the bigger protests are taking place, he continued.

Jonathan’s Planned Return, Obi?

Although only two years have passed since the 2027 general elections, there are rumors that the main opposition wants to persuade former president Goodluck Jonathan and former governor of Nambra State, Peter Obi, to rejoin.

Since being unspotted at PDP public events since losing to former president Muhammadu Buhari in 2015, Jonathan has maintained a low profile.

Similar to Atiku, who was Atiku’s running mate in the 2019 elections, he later dumped the PDP and won the party’s presidential ticket for the 2023 elections.

On Friday, December 23, 2022, in the former leader’s Yenagoa, Bayelsa State residence, former leader Goodluck Jonathan and former leader Peter Obi.

According to Moro, he was said to have been frustrated with the PDP, which he corroborated.

However, Moro claimed that talks are ongoing to persuade the duo to run for president.

He continued, “I am aware that some people have been talking to Peter Obi about “Hey, come back home, this is what we are likely to do, and if you come, you stand a chance of being the candidate,” Moro said on the program.
