Grimsby beating Man Utd joins ranks of biggest cup upsets

A replay of Manchester United’s shock EFL Cup exit on penalties against League Two side Grimsby Town will stick with them forever.

After coming back from 2-0 up with 15 minutes to go, United were beaten 12-11 on spot kicks to salvage a 2-2 draw.

In domestic cup action, United also experienced a notable upset for the first time. Remember the 1930 Old Trafford victory over York City?

Following Grimsby’s unexpected victory, BBC Sport examines 10 of the FA Cup’s and EFL Cup’s biggest upsets.

Grimsby 2-2 Man Utd (12-11 on pens, League Cup, 2025)

An extraordinary shock in both its style and its size. League Two Grimsby Town defeated Manchester United in the top flight.

After the 30-minute goals from Charles Vernam and Tyrell Warren, they were also up 2-0.

With 15 minutes left, United looked poised to win the match when Harry Maguire scored the equalizer in the 89th minute.

The only penalties missed by each team’s 11 took one, so it went to penalties, which turned into an incredible shootout, with Clarke Oduor for Grimsby and Matheus Cunha for Manchester United.

Plymouth 1-0 Liverpool (FA Cup, 2025)

After the Reds were forced to pay in their previous game, Arne Slot made ten changes to their Liverpool side.

After Harvey Elliott’s handball and Ryan Hardie’s emphatic penalty, the Pilgrims were awarded a penalty eight minutes later.

When Liverpool keeper Caoimhin Kelleher shot past Hardie, who had just added another second, the ball was almost on the post.

Chelsea 2-4 Bradford City (FA Cup, 2015)

When Bradford took on Chelsea, who were then at the top of the Premier League, they were 49 places below their rivals.

Chelsea took control of the fourth-round tie thanks to the goals from Gary Cahill and Ramires, who scored the hosts 2-0.

However, Bradford had other ideas when Filipe Morais scored from the spot before Jon Stead curled one back.

Oldham 3-2 Liverpool (FA Cup, 2013)

At Boundary Park, Premier League giants Liverpool were well represented, with Daniel Sturridge, Raheem Sterling, and Luis Suarez all starting.

Oldham, a League One team, were having financial difficulties, but they put on a strong performance to win the match, with Matt Smith nodding in a Youssouf M’Changama cross to start the scoring.

Suarez levelled before Reece Wabara headed home with a header past the Latics’ 3-1 lead, but Smith quickly capitalized on an error from Liverpool goalkeeper Brad Jones.

Bradford City 1-1 Arsenal (3-2 on pens, League Cup, 2012)

Arsenal were undisputed favorites to defeat a fourth-tier team in the league cup quarter-finals against Premier League rivals.

However, Bradford had already caused a stir in the previous round by beating Wigan on penalties. They prepared to fight Arsene Wenger’s Gunners at home.

With only two minutes left, Thomas Vermaelen headed home a Santi Cazorla cross with a header from Garry Thompson.

Vermaelen also scored the crucial kick in this game as Bradford won 3-2 on spot kicks just as Mbeumo did when United lost to Grimsby in normal time.

Liverpool 2-2 Northampton (2-4 on pens, League Cup, 2010)

Liverpool’s surprise cup exit is yet another.

This one occurred at Anfield during the League Cup. Liverpool opened the scoring with a first-half goal from Milan Jovanovic, but Billy McKay equalized and Michael Jacobs added a second-half equalizer to give the Cobblers a lead.

Man Utd 0-3 York City (League Cup, 1995)

Even Sir Alex Ferguson has experienced the same sort of shock at Manchester United as did Ruben Amorim, who is not the only one to win the League Cup.

With the likes of David Beckham, Lee Sharpe, and Ryan Giggs starting, the United boss only made four changes from the league game that they had previously played three days prior.

For Alan Little’s visitors, Paul Barnes, the father of Newcastle winger Harvey Barnes, scored twice, including one from the penalty spot, before Tony Barras headed home the third to send Old Trafford to a crushing defeat.

Wrexham 2-1 Arsenal (FA Cup, 1992)

Second in the premier league, Arsenal was the reigning champion. In the Third Division, Worcester placed 24th.

After Alan Smith’s first-half opener, the Gunners traveled to Wales as clear favorites and were only ten minutes away from securing a spot in the fourth round.

Sutton 2-1 Coventry (FA Cup, 1989)

In the 2016-17 campaign, Sutton United defeated three EFL teams, including Leeds United, before falling to Arsenal in the fifth round.

One of the biggest shocks ever was also caused by them.

The non-league team faced a Coventry team that was First Division at the time and had won the FA Cup in 1987.

Hereford 2-1 Newcastle (FA Cup, 1972)

When they faced Hereford United in 1972, Newcastle were defeated by non-league opposition in the third round of the FA Cup.

Following a 2-2 draw at St James’ Park, Hereford ended the game in a replay, but Newcastle looked set to advance to the fourth round thanks to Malcolm McDonald’s late goal.

Ronnie Radford scored the most famous 30-yard goal in FA Cup history to give the non-leaguers another chance, but Ronnie Radford came up with another idea.

Freddie Mercury’s ‘secret love child’ furiously slams ‘inaccurate’ biopic

Freddie Mercury reportedly had a “secret” child, and she has since criticised the 2018 biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, which featured Rami Malek as the late singer.

A woman who claims to be the daughter of the late Freddie Mercury has criticised the biopic Bohemian Rhapsody. She alleges that the acclaimed film is “full of fabrication” and that the singer-songwriter would have been “appalled” by it.

It was reported earlier this year that Queen vocalist Freddie, who died, aged 45, back in 1991, had a ‘secret’ child, whose identity has not been revealed. It’s been claimed that he fathered a daughter with the wife of a friend in the 1970s.

The news came ahead of the biography Love, Freddie being released next month. It’s expected to delve into the claim that Freddie had a child and his supposed daughter is said to have spoken to the book’s author, Lesley-Ann Jones.

Now, ahead of its publication, the woman claiming to be his daughter has spoken out over the film Bohemian Rhapsody, which was released in 2018. Starring Rami Malek in the lead role, it focused on aspects of Freddie’s life.

For instance, the Oscar-winning movie followed Queen’s rise to fame and Freddie’s solo career. Additionally, it explored his relationship with Mary Austin and delved into the band’s 1985 Live Aid performance at Wembley Stadium.

The woman who claims to be Freddie’s child came forward merely to correct “a movie that is full of fabrication” prior to the biography’s release, according to the Sun. There are a number of things the outlet seemed to be worried about.

She claimed that Rami, an actor, “never smiled or looked happy,” contrary to what is said to have caused her to complain. She also claims producers of errors about the dates and how Freddie’s Aids diagnosis was handled.

The woman made the claim that Freddie’s life has been “distorted, twisted, and rewritten” since his death, and that he would have had to give him some input before deciding to block the movie. He would have been “appalled,” she told the outlet, according to her statement.

She added that if the late performer had been present, his hair would have “stretched for the duration” of the performance. She continued, “This film presents a version of him so far removed from the truth,” in a conversation with Bohemian Rhapsody.

Freddie’s bandmate Brian May, who is said to have been a consultant on the film, defended Bohemian Rhapsody against criticism over inaccuracies in 2019. Addressing critics who took issue with the timeline, he told Guitar World that those behind the film weren’t making a documentary.

He claimed, “We weren’t producing a documentary.” It wasn’t meant to be “this happened, and then this happened.” This attempt was made to explore Freddie Mercury’s innermost self, displaying his drive, passion, fears, and flaws.

They added that Freddie would “love it” and that they wanted to portray his relationship with his bandmates. The guitarist claimed in the interview that the interview is a “good, honest portrayal” of his late bandmate.

Producer Graham King has previously said that it isn’t a documentary. As reported after the premiere of the film, he said in 2018: “[Freddie’s bandmates] were very opinionated in the early days about the movie they wanted. I told May, ‘We’re making a film, not a documentary’.”

Court transfers Bolivian politician Luis Fernando Camacho to house arrest

In response to outcry over the length of his pretrial detention, a court in Bolivia has placed prominent opposition leader Luis Fernando Camacho under house arrest.

According to a court order issued on Wednesday, Camacho, the right-wing governor of the eastern department of Santa Cruz, could be released from preventative detention on bail if he agrees to house arrest.

On Friday, he will return to Santa Cruz, the capital of Bolivia’s most populous city, via the name Santa Cruz.

His attorney, Martin Camacho, confirmed on Wednesday that the judicial body had recommended the end of Governor Luis Fernando Camacho’s preventive detention and that it had been replaced with house arrest.

According to the attorney, Governor Camacho could resume performing his political duties under his bail’s work-release conditions.

Bolivia’s political landscape changes

Camacho was detained in December 2022 after being detained in response to weeks of bloody protests he led by right-wingers angry with La Paz’s left-wing political leadership. Since then, he has been in pretrial detention.

Pre-trial detention in Bolivia typically shouldn’t last longer than six months. Camacho’s release was approved on Tuesday after the Supreme Court of Justice requested a review of his sentence last week.

A second judge opted to place Camacho instead of being put under house arrest after the hearing on Wednesday.

Following Tuesday’s decision, Camacho declared, “This is the first step toward freedom.” The justice’s elected representatives are regaining the rule of law today.

Camacho’s release coincides with a significant change in Bolivia’s political landscape. For the most part, the country has been under the control of the left-wing Movement for Socialism (MAS) party for the past 20 years.

However, all of the left-wing presidential candidates were eliminated from contention in the general election on August 17.

Instead, centrist Senator Rodrigo Paz and former president Jorge “Tuto” Quiroga, who both pledged more radical change, have advanced to the run-offs.

In contrast, Camacho has gained notoriety as a leader of Bolivia’s far-right Christian group, Creemos, which means “We Believe.” He was even given the nickname “Bolivian Bolsonaro,” in honor of former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro, who is currently on trial for allegedly conspiring to overturn an election.

Camacho is facing “terrorism”-related charges in La Paz’s Chonchocoro prison for his part.

Although those charges are still ongoing, Wednesday’s release from house arrest is not.

To protest Luis Fernando Camacho’s hearing on August 26th, a protester holds a sign that reads “30 years in prison for the coup plotters.”

Camacho’s case

Camacho is still facing legal issues, including two well-known cases that put him in jail.

The first is related to his actions during the 2019 political crisis, during which former president Evo Morales fled.

Morales is regarded as Bolivia’s first indigenous leader in recent memory, but he had a controversial campaign for a fourth term in the 2018 general election.

Camacho became a well-known opposition figure in the months that followed, calling Morales’ victory a “fraud.”

In a campaign Morales compared to a “coup,” he and other conservative leaders pressured the then-president to resign.

Camacho, who was carrying a Bible in hand, wrote a symbolic resignation letter to Morales’s country departure letter. Camacho is accused of sedition and “terrorism” for his role in the political crisis.

Camacho’s actions during the unrest in Santa Cruz in 2022 are the second most significant case in his favor. He is facing criminal charges for using public property without permission.

Luis Arce, Morales’ former finance minister, was elected president of Bolivia by 2022, continuing the trend of MAS-led governments in La Paz.

Santa Cruz, which is regarded as Bolivia’s richest economic hub and the largest by land area, had anticipated increases in the upcoming census, which could lead to greater legislative representation.

The Arce government announced the census would be delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic’s disruptions, but

Santa Cruz’s streets were infuriated by the decision. A powerful right-wing organization led by Camacho led a strike that lasted nearly 36 days.

Protesters squabbled with law enforcement, set fires, and blocked roads. The government ombudsman received reports of numerous human rights violations, including sexual assault and murder. Camacho is accused of being a compliciter in the chaos by the prosecution.

As former Santa Cruz governor Luis Fernando Camacho is alleged to have acted in sedition and terrorism on August 25 at his trial, a woman passes police guarding the Court of Justice.

Camacho’s release sparked polarized opinions.

However, the Supreme Court of Justice has requested that the charges against Camacho and other prominent opposition figures, including Marco Antonio Pumari and Jeanine Anez, be reviewed.

Prior to the run-off on October 17, Quiroga has fought for the release of the imprisoned opposition figures.

Quiroga expressed excitement over Camacho’s imminent release on his Facebook page on Tuesday.

“Justice cannot be used to exact retaliation. It must be the foundation of a free and democratic Bolivia, Quiroga wrote.

“I applaud the release of Marco Pumari and Luis Fernando Camacho so that they can pursue their freedom-defending efforts. Let’s move forward and keep in mind that all people have hope when justice is attained.

Camacho’s anticipated return was also celebrated by supporters in Santa Cruz.

Some protesters, however, demanded that he be kept in jail outside the La Paz court. Camacho was cited as the cause of the unrest that resulted in the death of at least 37 people during the political crisis in 2019.

Chiefs’ Rice gets six-game NFL ban over car crash

Rashee Rice, the wide receiver for the Kansas City Chiefs, has received a six-game ban from the NFL for breaking its personal conduct rules.

Following Rice’s conviction for his role in a multi-vehicle collision in Dallas in March 2024, which resulted in numerous injuries, the suspension is issued.

The 25-year-old admitted to two third-degree felony counts and received a 30-day jail term.

Rice is suspended without pay and “will serve out the penalty,” according to the NFL. Additionally, it is against his will to participate in Chiefs training.

On September 5, the Chiefs’ regular-season opener against the Los Angeles Chargers in Sao Paulo, Brazil will be Rice’s absence.

Additionally, he will be prohibited from playing for the Detroit Lions, Philadelphia Eagles, New York Giants, Baltimore Ravens, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Detroit Lions.

On October 19, he will be eligible to play again for the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 7.

Prior to the scheduled 30 September disciplinary hearing, the NFL initially considered suspending Rice for more than half the season, but reached an agreement with the NFL Players Association regarding the suspension.

Following a breakout rookie year in 2023 with 79 receptions, 938 yards, and seven touchdowns, Rice picked up a season-ending injury four games into the 2024 campaign.

Rice apologized “for the harm I caused to innocent drivers and their families” following his sentencing last month.

Man Utd dumped out of League Cup by fourth-tier Grimsby Town

In the second round of the English League Cup, Manchester United was humiliated by fourth-tier Grimsby Town following a relentless penalty shootout.

Bryan Mbeumo missed the crucial penalty on Wednesday, but Grimsby won a dramatic shootout at the 9, 000-capacity Blundell Park on England’s east coast, winning 12-11.

With a halftime lead of 2-0, United needed late goals from Mbeumo and Harry Maguire to keep their record to 2-2.

After a disappointing 15th-place finish in the Premier League last season, the team has won just three games so far this campaign, which will go down as one of the most embarrassing results in United’s history.

Charles Vernam, the team’s goal scorer, described it as “an amazing feeling that will live on forever.

After Mbeumo’s spot kick rebounded off the crossbar to seal United’s fate, Grimsby’s cheering fans stormed onto the field to join the players.

The home team finished the match with a lineup that included several academy graduates and a Faroe Islands international, which is currently fourth in League Two.

In contrast, United only signed Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Benjamin Sesko during an initial offensive worth 200 million pounds ($270 million).

Cunha also lost because his weak attempt was saved in the shootout.

The manager [the gaffer] said to us, “Lads, all the pressure is on them,” and it was, in fact,,” Grimsby midfielder Kieran Green said.

Amorim, who was appointed manager of United in November and has won 16 of his 44 games, is now under more pressure as a result.

United missed qualifying for European competition last season, so they were only playing in the second round for the first time since 2014.

The team lost to third-tier MK Dons in the second round that year by a 4-0.

Stefanos Tzimas scored twice on his debut to send Brighton into round three with a 6-0 win over Oxford.

Both Fulham and Everton made it two goals clear, beating Bristol City and Mansfield, respectively, 2-0.
