David Haye accused of failing to pay almost £600,000 as he prepares to fight taxman

Former boxing world champion David Haye has been accused of failing to pay almost £600,000 in debts as HMRC won a hearing to probe his Hayemaker Boxing Ltd firm

David Haye has been accused of failing to pay almost £600,000 in debts as the HMRC takes him to court. The former boxing world champion, who was nicknamed the Hayemaker, failed to settle corporation tax bills over three years.

He is said to have racked up the huge debt from 2010 to 2013. During that time his career was booming as he won several big fights but also suffered a world title defeat to Wladimir Klitschko.

HMRC reportedly won a hearing at the county court in London to probe David’s firm, Hayemaker Boxing Ltd. Court papers seen by the Mirror have shown that the HMRC believes the firm deliberately tried to avoid tax. “It is alleged that the company’s profits were deliberately understated,” a restoration order document said.

According to reports, David also faces interest payments and penalty fines. David is believed to have banked an impressive £20million from his boxing career.

However, his business empire has crumbled as in 2023 it was revealed two of his firms had gone bust. They reportedly owed over half a million pounds.

David’s sports firm named The Undercard London is in £280,400 debt and faces closure. In recent years, David has found his love life hitting the headlines over his ring antics.

David and girlfriend Sian Osborne have seen intrigue in their romance as they have been swept up in throuple rumours. They have been together since 2020, with reports suggesting they have welcomed other women into their romance.

Last year, the couple decided to turn to the aid of celebrity dating app Raya to help find a third person to join them. However, those who stumbled across the profile found some stark warnings in the details.

A screenshot of the profile page emerged online – appearing to show it was written by David and said he is “enjoying the game we call life”. The profile made it clear he already has a partner – but said they were open to “connect” with a third partner.

Fans had their eyebrows raised when The Saturdays singer Una Healy was linked to the couple in 2023. But the All Fired Up singer said she was ‘hoodwinked’ into the three-way romance.

She told the My Therapist Ghosted Me podcast: “Dating him is the right term because that’s how it was, it wasn’t a throuple. We had a lovely relationship.”

Una claimed that she had been “hoodwinked” into joining the relationship and said David was the one pushing the “throuple” narrative. She insisted that she’s still friendly with him and harbours no “bitterness” towards him.

Last year, former Coronation Street star Helen Flanagan confessed she had fallen for the former professional boxer, but she struggled with not being the only woman in his life.

Speaking on Celebs Go Dating, she said: “He had a girlfriend and an open relationship. I didn’t mean to fall in love with him, but I did. We did have this amazing connection together – we were like fire.

“It was weird – I think he does love his girlfriend and he loves me as well. It just brings me to a part in my life that was quite dark.” After being quizzed about claims she was in a throuple, she said: “No [it wasn’t]. I was in love with him. I wouldn’t have enjoyed watching the man I was in love with have sex with another woman, that’s not for me.”

The Mirror has contacted David’s representatives for comment.

Ter Stegen resolves Barca dispute to regain captaincy

Getty Images

Marc-Andre ter Stegen has been reinstated as Barcelona captain and disciplinary proceedings against him dropped in a dramatic 24-hour turnaround.

The German keeper had been stripped of the armband on Thursday because of a dispute centred around surgery on a back injury in July.

Barcelona would reportedly have been able to clear 80% of his wages until mid-season if the 33-year-old was classed as a long-term absentee, freeing up funds to allow them to register new players.

However, Ter Stegen recently published a post on social media saying he would be out for three months, whereas La Liga rules require a player to remain sidelined for at least four to be considered a long-term absentee.

He had also reportedly been unwilling to allow Barca to share his medical data with La Liga.

But Barca said Ter Stegen has now signed the relevant forms giving them authorisation to send the medical report.

In a social media post earlier on Friday, the keeper said he was “fully willing to collaborate with the club’s management to resolve this matter and to provide the requested authorisation”.

Ter Stegen added the suggestion his injury absence was being used as tool for Barcelona to register new players was “both unfair and inaccurate”.

“I would also like to clarify that all of the club’s signings and contract renewals were completed prior to my surgery,” he said.

“At no point could I consider that my unfortunate circumstances with the new surgery I had to undergo would be necessary for the registration of other colleagues whom I greatly respect and look forward to share [a] locker room with for many seasons.

“I understand that difficult moments can generate tension, but I trust that, through dialogue and responsibility, we can resolve this situation constructively.”

The La Liga champions’ summer signings have included the arrival of keeper Joan Garcia from Espanyol and England striker Marcus Rashford on loan from Manchester United.

Flick banned for Champions League opener

Manager Hansi Flick will miss Barcelona’s first Champions League match of the season after being sanctioned by Uefa for misconduct.

The German has been given a one-match ban and fined £17,000 by the European governing body’s disciplinary committee.

Flick was critical of several refereeing decisions during Barca’s 4-3 Champions League semi-final second-leg defeat to Inter Milan in May, with the Spanish club losing 7-6 on aggregate.

His assistant Marcus Sorg has been handed the same punishment.

The opening round of the Champions League takes place from 16 to 18 September.

Former Bayern Munich and Germany boss Flick was appointed as Barcelona manager in June 2024 and won La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup in his first season.

Remi Tinubu Donates ₦110m To Families Of Kano Athletes Killed In Accident

Wife of the President, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has donated ₦110 million to the families of the 22 Kano athletes who lost their lives in a tragic road accident earlier this year.

According to the spokesperson to the Kano State governor, Sanusi Tofa, each bereaved family received ₦5 million, as stated in a post on the Presidency’s X handle on Friday.

He explained that the disbursement was facilitated through the Victim Support Fund, a government-backed initiative designed to assist Nigerians affected by emergencies, tragedies, or crises.

The fund, he said, had been “instrumental in helping victims cope with the emotional and financial burdens that often follow such incidents”.

“Mrs Tinubu’s gesture has drawn commendation nationwide, with many describing it as a heartfelt display of compassion and national solidarity”. The First Lady’s timely response reflects values of empathy and responsive leadership, “the statement noted.

The Presidency said the donation aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

” Through actions like this, the First Lady exemplifies the administration’s commitment to restoring faith in governance by reaching out directly to citizens in times of pain and need, “the statement added.

The donation followed a fatal road crash in May along the Kano–Kaduna highway, which claimed the lives of the athletes.

Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said the victims were members of the Kano State contingent returning from the National Sports Festival in Ogun State.

The team had reportedly been on the road shortly after the festival’s conclusion.

One of the survivors, Ado Salisu, told journalists that the accident happened just hours before they were expected to arrive in Kano.

The incident occurred around 12: 30 p. m. at Gadar Yankifi in Garun Malam Local Government Area.

It involved a Toyota Coaster Bus with registration number KN041 A17.

Trump offers UCLA $1bn settlement amid pro-Palestine protest standoff

The administration of United States President Donald Trump has requested that the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), submit to a $1bn settlement to resolve accusations stemming from the school’s&nbsp, handling of pro-Palestine protests.

A White House official and the University of California system both confirmed the proposed settlement to news agencies on Friday.

The settlement proposal is notable for the massive sum requested, as the Trump administration seeks to pressure top schools into compliance with its policies.

The $1bn price tag would far exceed the payouts inked in previous agreements reached with Columbia University and Brown University last month. Columbia agreed to pay a fine of about $221m, and Brown confirmed it would pay $50m to a state workforce development programme.

“The University of California just received a document from the Department of Justice and is reviewing it”, University of California President James Milliken said in a statement.

He added that the institution had offered to have talks with the government earlier this week.

UCLA, which boasts the largest student body in the University of California system, had also announced this week that the Trump administration suspended $584m in federal grants to the school.

The Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division explained that the funding would be frozen as a result of civil rights violations connected to pro-Palestinian protests since 2023. The school had acted “with deliberate indifference in creating a hostile educational environment for Jewish and Israeli students”, it said.

Free-speech advocates, however, have accused the Trump administration of willfully conflating pro-Palestine and antiwar advocacy with anti-Semitism in order to silence protesters.

Last month, UCLA reached a $6m settlement with three Jewish students and a Jewish professor who claimed their civil rights were violated by pro-Palestinian protesters blocking their access to class and other areas on campus during a 2024 protest encampment.

It was not immediately clear why the $1bn settlement sought by the Trump administration was so high.

UCLA is also the first publicly funded university to face a potential grant freeze from the Trump administration. In his statement, Milliken said the payment would have wide-ranging consequences.

“As a public university, we are stewards of taxpayer resources, and a payment of this scale would completely devastate our country’s greatest public university system as well as inflict great harm on our students and all Californians”, he said.

Civil liberties organisations have also underscored that students at publicly funded universities are typically afforded wider constitutional protections while on campus.

That stands in contrast to private institutions, where students are generally subject to whatever restrictions on speech are outlined by administrators in their enrollment agreement.

The First Amendment of the US Constitution restricts the government’s ability to limit free speech. Any future agreement between the University of California system and the Trump administration might face a legal challenge, should it be perceived to trample on free-speech rights.

Speaking on Thursday, California Governor Gavin Newsom, who has been one of Trump’s most vocal Democratic opponents, urged the state’s university officials not to kowtow to the administration’s demands.

Warrington (8) 18

Tries: Josh Thewlis, Williams, Jake Thewlis Goals: Sneyd 3

Wigan (6) 24

Wigan Warriors prepared for their crunch Super League showdown against leaders Hull KR with a comeback win at Warrington.

The Wire led the reigning champions 8-6 at half time but were undone by a combination of errors, vulnerability under the high ball and a relentless Wigan drive in the second period.

Three tries after the break for Matt Peet’s side, answered with a late consolation for Jake Thewlis, saw them run out 24-18 winners.

Defeat put a dent in Warrington’s play-off hopes after they failed to close the four-point gap to Wakefield Trinity in sixth.

Whatever the gap, there is no doubt the Robins will be travelling to meet a Wigan side who are finally beginning to locate top gear with the regular season coming to the boil.

Wigan were behind early after Josh Thewlis intercepted Jai Field’s pass, running it 90 metres after a quarter of an hour as Warrington took the lead.

Brad O’Neill went over from close range to level before Marc Sneyd’s boot sent Wigan in trailing after Wire elected to kick a penalty in front of goal with three minutes of the half remaining.

Warrington nearly extended their lead further shortly after when a flowing move through Jake Thewlis and Toby King was finished off by Joe Philbin only for the try to be ruled out for a forward final pass.

Jack Garrimond got the ball rolling on Wigan’s improved second-half showing, finishing a move with a kick and collect via Zach Eckersley.

A second assist for Eckersley followed as he put in Liam Farrell before taking centre stage himself, capitalising on a knock-on from Warrington on 66 minutes.

Another error at the back by Warrington saw Kruise Leeming pounce to tee up Farrimond who added his second try in the right corner as Wigan stretched their lead to 24-12.

With time running out, the hosts briefly threatened to set up a grandstand finish as Jake Thewlis’ try and Sneyd’s nerveless kick brought them to within six points.

Warrington coach Sam Burgess told BBC Radio Merseyside:

“There are areas in the game where our concentration doesn’t seem to be there and I’m not talking for a split second.

“Sometimes effort is not enough – you need to be thinking for the whole game.

“They are a great side with great players and they took some moments against us. They turned it up in the last 20 minutes and we couldn’t stay with them.

“We had our moments too but it is guys making tackles and keeping hold of the ball. We are just not being clinical enough.

“With Matt Dufty, the bottom line is he hurt the team and he has to fix his behaviour up. I will say he has been great through the week but we missed him tonight and that was his choice.”

Wigan coach Matt Peet told BBC Radio Merseyside:

“I am proud and I enjoyed the performance. There were a lot of positives to take out in terms of endeavour and will and defensive commitment.

“The margins of the game could have been greater, but it is always a tough place to come. I know they like to challenge Wigan and they’ve got some good players playing well so it’s a good test.”

Peet on going on to face Hull KR next week: “It is a performance we are proud of, but the quality has to improve.
