Women’s Rugby World Cup: England v Samoa

Venue: Franklin’s Gardens, Northampton Date: Saturday, 30 August Kick-off: 17:00 BST

England have made 13 changes to their starting XV for Saturday’s Women’s Rugby World Cup game against Samoa in Northampton.

Former captain Marlie Packer takes over as skipper from Zoe Aldcroft as John Mitchell opts to rest his regular starters.

The 111-cap flanker has not played since being sent off in her side’s emphatic World Cup warm-up win over Spain, where she again captained the side in Aldcroft’s absence.

It is the first time since Aldcroft was appointed captain in January that she will be absent from the matchday 23.

Utility back Helena Rowland and Claudia Moloney-MacDonald return from injury to start at fly-half and on the left wing respectively.

Fly-half Holly Aitchison again misses out as she continues to recover from an ankle injury.

Rowland started the opening game of this year’s Women’s Six Nations against Italy at fly-half, but it is not a position she has played regularly.

“It has been in our planning to give everyone game time over the first two pool matches and, bar Holly, we’ve been able to execute that with this selection,” Mitchell said.

“Our new combination want to make each other proud and build on our performance against USA in our opening match.

“It will be a great atmosphere for them at one of the most traditional rugby grounds in the country. They’re all excited to get out there.”

Jess Breach, who is one score away from 50 international tries, retains her spot after two tries against the USA, as does impressive outside centre Megan Jones.

Jones is joined by Gloucester-Hartpury’s Jade Shekells in the midfield, with Emma Sing named at full-back.

In the forwards, lock Lilli Ives Campion and flanker Abi Burton are set for World Cup debuts after being named to start.

Maddie Feaunati starts at number eight against the nation her father Zak played for 13 times.

Prop Mackenzie Carson could make her first appearance from the bench after being injured in this year’s Six Nations.

World Rugby women’s player of the year Ellie Kildunne, who starred with two tries against the United States, is included on a strong bench that includes last week’s starting half-backs Natasha Hunt and Zoe Harrison.

Samoa, who are fully amateur and ranked 15th in the world, lost their opening game 73-0 to Australia.

Given England played two different teams across this year’s Women’s Six Nations and still won a fourth consecutive Grand Slam, they are likely to record a big scoreline in Northampton despite the wholesale changes.

Fabian Hurzeler, the club’s manager, declares that he is “100%” confident that Carlos Baleba will play for the club this year.

Manchester United inquired about the cost of signing the 21-year-old, but the Seagulls’ refusal to sell forced them to end their search earlier this month.

Since joining Brighton from Lille in 2023, Baleba has started both of their Premier League matches. He has made 80 appearances.

When asked if the Cameroon international would remain at Brighton after the transfer deadline, even if a lucrative offer was made, Hurzeler said “yes.”

Hurzeler remarked, “If there is a number greater than 100, [%], I would say more than 100, so fantastically confident.”

In addition to Maxim de Cuyper from Club Brugge for a reported £17.5 million, Olivier Boscagli from PSV Eindhoven for a free transfer, and Diego Coppola from Hellas Verona for an undisclosed sum, Brighton has signed six players this summer.

In addition to signings from Sunderland for £10 million, Olympiakos signed forward Charalampos Kostoulas for $29 million, and winger Yoon Do-young signed from Daejeon Hana Citizen for £10 million.

Before the deadline, Hurzeler anticipates no more arrivals.

When asked if Brighton was finished in the market, he responded, “I have a feeling.”

Amy Dowden says her ‘heart sank’ after latest hospital visit and shares desperate plea

Strictly Come Dancing professional Amy Dowden has issues a desperate plea to her followers after her latest hospital appointment where her ‘heart sank’

Amy Dowden has shared a poignant update two years after her cancer diagnosis after recently admitting that she is now happier and healthier than ever after beating the disease.

The professional dancer, 34, was diagnosed with breast cancer in May 2023 after she discovered a lump in her breast in April, just before her honeymoon. She sought medical advice upon her return, leading to the diagnosis.

The much-loved BBC star then received the “no evidence of disease” news from her doctors in February 2024, following a health check after her cancer treatment.

Sharing an update with her fans on Thursday, the Strictly Come Dancing professional took to her Instagram stories to admit that her ‘heart sank’ at her latest hospital appointment before issuing a plea to all of her followers.

Amy appeared on camera with a bare-face and wearing a striped pink jumper while sitting in her car. Speaking to the camera, she said: “Good morning all. I wanted to just come on my stories and firstly just say hello, but I have just literally finished my appointment and as always, it’s so lovely to see the wonderful Sheldon unit.

“As I always say, they are real life superheroes. Everybody is who works on that department. I went in and I asked how it’s been in there and they all said that it’s been ridiculously busy. And my heart just sank for them because that means that more people are needing treatment and more people are being diagnosed with cancer.

“My heart…just absolutely sank. It had me feeling low but then I realised just how important it is to raise awareness and to share my story. And to remember that if you’re not checking yourself, who is? And early diagnosis can save lives.”

Amy pleaded with her followers: “Please, please, make sure you’re looking after yourself and you know your own body better than anyone else does.

“If you feel different or like something is not right, please get it checked out by a GP. I am just in awe of all the people that work on that unit, they work so, so, hard.”

In a recent Instagram post reflecting on her diagnosis, Amy sent an inspirational message to her followers while she was enjoying some time away on holidays with her twin sister Becky. The Strictly Come Dancing star wrote: “Some much-needed twin time.

“We had the perfect little escape – full of sunshine, sangria, beach days, rooftop swims, incredible food, and most importantly, proper quality time together,” she wrote.

Amy went on: “After my cancer diagnosis, I promised my family (and myself) that I’d take more downtime. I used to live life at 100mph, saying yes to everything and everyone. But cancer shifts your perspective.

“This year I’ve been incredibly lucky with new job opportunities which have been full on but so rewarding and I can’t wait to share all to you very soon. So having time to slow down isn’t just okay – it’s essential.

“These past few days have been the perfect reset and I’m heading into the new season feeling recharged, happy, stronger, and HEALTHIER than ever.”
