The Hundred women’s competition, Southampton

Southern Brave 139-7 (100 balls): Wyatt-Hodge 59 (39); Arlott 2-19

Birmingham Phoenix 124 (99 balls): Kalis 44 (34); Bell 3-17

Southern Brave won by 15 runs

England batter Danni Wyatt-Hodge’s 59 from 39 balls and a fine all-round display from Sophie Devine led Southern Brave to a 15-run win against Birmingham Phoenix in the women’s Hundred.

Phoenix slipped to 22-3 in pursuit of 140 to win, but captain Ellyse Perry led a revival with stands of 37 with England’s Amy Jones and 36 with Sterre Kalis.

The visitors were in a strong position with 45 needed from the last 30 balls, but New Zealand all-rounder Devine crucially dismissed Perry for 26 to spark a collapse from 95-4 to 124 all out.

Devine also held on to the catch to dismiss Jones for 20, removed Ailsa Lister for one and executed a brilliant run out in her follow-through to get rid of Megan Schutt for seven as Phoenix’s lower order buckled under the pressure, with nobody able to support Kalis’ 44 from 34 balls.

England seamer Lauren Bell also impressed for Brave, with 3-17 to continue her fine form after a three-wicket haul in their opening win against Manchester Originals on Wednesday.

Earlier, Wyatt-Hodge added 52 for the third wicket with Devine, who made 27, after Maia Bouchier fell cheaply for six and South Africa’s Laura Wolvaardt made a fluent 28.

The opener’s half-century was the ninth of her Hundred career, the most for any batter in the women’s competition as she surpassed Nat Sciver-Brunt’s eight, while Bell overtook Amanda-Jade Wellington as the tournament’s all-time leading wicket-taker with 47.

Brave had a solid platform at 120-2 with 15 balls remaining, but Phoenix fought back with a flurry of wickets and the hosts were pegged back to 139-7.

Australia seamer Megan Schutt and England’s Em Arlott were the standout bowlers with 2-23 and 2-19 respectively.

The Hundred women’s competition, Trent Bridge

Trent Rockets 128-8 (100 balls): Gardner 61 (32); Cross 3-31

Northern Superchargers 129-2 (79 balls): Perrin 72* (40); Graham 1-22

Superchargers won by eight wickets

Teenager opening batter Davina Perrin hit a superb unbeaten 72 as Northern Superchargers thrashed Trent Rockets on Sunday to made it two wins from two.

After a fantastic bowling effort kept the Rockets to 128-8, Perrin thumped 12 boundaries in her 40-ball knock to take the Superchargers to an eight-wicket win with 21 balls to spare.

It could have been worse for the home side were it not for captain Ash Gardner, who made an enterprising 61 from 32 balls to rescue Rockets from 5-3 early in the match.

England seamer Kate Cross was the pick of the Superchargers attack, taking 3-31, while left-arm spinner Linsey Smith also impressed with 1-19 from her 20 balls.

A miserable day for the Rockets began with an early run out as Georgia Wareham, with just one stump to aim at, got the direct hit to remove Bryony Smith and, Gardner’s counter-attacking innings aside, things only got worse for the hosts.

They offered precious little with the bat either side of Gardner’s knock and were given the run-around by Perrin in the field.

The 18-year-old made a flying start as she hit seven boundaries in the powerplay to take Superchargers to 40-0 and they could have afforded to cruise from there.

Perrin got to her maiden Hundred fifty from 28 balls and was able to have a brief breather as Phoebe Litchfield came in and took the lead, smashing 22 from 10 balls.

Ray Brooks dead: Coronation Street and EastEnders actor who voiced Mr Benn dies

Legendary actor Ray Brooks has died at the age of 86, his family has confirmed. The actor, who is one of the few actors to appear in both Coronation Street and EastEnders, died on Saturday after a short illness, his family told the BBC.

He was also the famous voice of Mr Benn, narrating the classic 1970s children’s show. The actor’s sons Will and Tom shared a touching statement to confirm his death.

They said that while their father thought he was best known for his role on Mr Benn, people would be “continually asking him to say the catchphrase ‘as if by magic!'”.

In the cartoon, the character was always dressed in a black lounge suit and bowler hat. In each episode of the iconic children’s animation which, surprisingly, only ran on the BBC from 1971 to 1972, Mr Benn would leave his house at 52 Festive Road, London, and visit a fancy-dress costume shop.

There, he would inevitably be invited by the moustachioed, fez-wearing shopkeeper to try on a particular outfit – and end up going on a magical adventure.

In the statement to the BBC, his family added: “Although only 13 episodes were made, they were repeated twice a year for 21 years.”

And the family’s moving statement also said: “His three true loves were family [he also had a daughter Emma, who died in 2003], Fulham Football Club, and spending time in Brighton, where he was born..”

In the soap world, Ray joined the Corrie cobbles in the 1960s, taking up the role as Norman Philips in the long-running ITV soap. Almost 40 years later, he switched allegiances, joining BBC’s EastEnders as Joe Macer.

His character will be best remembered for murdering his wife Pauline Fowler. but throughout his long career in showbiz, Ray also had a large resume to look back on.

After being the male lead in the ground-breaking 1960s BBC drama Cathy Come Home, he later starred in 1980s hit Big Deal. He played the part of Robbie Box and the series before later appearing in Running Wild as the comic lead Max Wild.

Other roles included appearances on Danger Man, Dixon of Dock Green, Emergency-Ward 10, The Avengers, Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) and Z Cars.

And Ray also had success on the big screen too. Movie appearances came on the likes of Carry On Abroad in 1972, and also the 1966 Dr Who movie Daleks’ Invasion Earth: 2150 A.D.

In the theatre world he played roles in Alan Ayckbourn’s Absent Friends alongside Richard Briers, Peter Bowles and Phyllida Law, while also featuring in Tom Stoppard’s On The Razzle.

And his voiceover success didn’t just stop at Mr Benn. Ray also voiced thousands of adverts for huge companies. These included the likes of Guinness, Whiskas, Marmite and R Whites Lemonade.

Speaking about his career to Sussex Life, the humble actor once confessed, “I don’t think I was ever that good an actor. I was more an image of a young man. I was never as good looking as, say, my contemporary, David Hemmings. And don’t forget this was the period of Terence Stamp. So there was a lot of competition.’

The family revealed that Brooks had lived with dementia for the past few years, but died peacefully on Saturday with his family at his bedside.

Fans of Ray’s work were quick to pay tribute to him on social media following the sad news. One Twitter/X account wrote: “Well, this is sad. Ray Brooks has died. As 80s kids, a lot of us will know him as the voice of Mr Ben. “

“In later life, I’ve become a big fan of Big Deal (usually watch every other year) where he played Robbie Box. RIP Ray.”

Another added: “Our lovely friend Ray Brooks has left us for the cinema in the sky. His talents knew ‘The Knack,’ was always a ‘Big Deal’ and he will be forever the voice of ‘Mr Benn.’ Rest in peace dear friend.”

Lady Wilnelia, widow of late entertainment star Bruce Forsyth, has revealed she would be open to falling in love again as she tells the Mirror she has ‘no idea what the future holds’

Bruce Forsyth’s widow Lady Wilnelia Forsyth is considering dating again – eight years after the late Strictly legend’s death.

Asked about the prospect of falling in love again, the 67-year-old nodded enthusiastically as she told the Mirror, “’I’ve no idea what is in the future for me. But I am really happy.”

The Puerto Rican beauty, 67, was married to former Strictly host Bruce for 34 years until his death in 2017, aged 89, closing the curtain on a stellar 75-year career in the entertainment business. It comes after reports of Victoria Beckham’s four-word comment to Geri Horner amid Spice Girls ‘feud’.

The former actress and beauty queen, who won Miss World 1975, tells us she is in a great place, and believes the secret to her youthful looks is ‘trying to be happy’ and the fact that she’s ‘just put a few pounds on’.

But she also admits that the last eight years, trying to create a whole new routine since the loss of her beloved husband – with whom she shares grow-up son Jonathan Joseph, 39, have not been easy.

‘It is difficult… But you know, what can you do? I always think, at least I am surrounded by all my family. I spend time in Puerto Rico as well and I keep very busy with all the different charities that I support. And I play golf, a lot of golf now. My handicap is 24. I’m getting there.’”

Lady Wilnelia, whose late husband was a famously keen golfer and would regularly take part in pro-celebrity golf tournaments, believes he’d be very proud of her newfound sporting passion. “He would love it. I am the Vice President of Variety Golf. He would have been very impressed with it, I think!”’

The former model is certainly keeping herself busy, with trips back to her native country, and attending high-profile recent events such as Ascot. “ I have done so many things, I’ve been going out everywhere. ‘It has been wonderful. Really lovely.’

As for Bruce’s family, Lady Wilnelia says she still remains in touch with them. “I’ve just been celebrating the birthday of one of my step daughters – she was 70 – I don’t know how that happened.’

Her latest project is a new charity started back home, in her late parents’ memory. ‘I started a new charity in Puerto Rico because my father and mother both passed away and they both had Alzheimer’s. I was a caregiver – and this is for the caregivers.”

She adds, “We are also going to have a gala at some point, celebrating my 50 years of winning Miss World. Imagine, I don’t know where time has gone!”

When Lady Wilnelia tied the knot with Bruce, it was third time happy for the seasoned entertainer – after two failed marriages before her.

Sir Bruce met his first wife, Penny Calvert, at London’s Windmill Theatre, when he was in his 20s. The couple married in 1953 and lasted 20 years, the couple going on to have three daughters: Debbie, Julie and Laura, but theirs would prove a turbulent union.

In 1971, the presenter launched The Generation Game on the BBC with former Bunny Girl and glamour model Anthea Redfern – and affair a passionate affair, the pair got married on Christmas Eve 1973, five months after Sir Bruce’s divorce from Penny was finalised.

That marriage lasted six years, and the couple welcomed two daughters, Charlotte and Louisa – but ended when Anthea admitted adultery with another man.

Though he went through two divorces, had six children and a smattering of extra-marital affairs, Sir Bruce’s private life after tying the knot with Lady Wilnelia – who in later years devotedly nursed her husband through several bouts of ill-health, was happy and conflict-free..

Despite their 29-year age-gap – she was 23 when they met, he 52 – they remained devoted for more than three decades, and Sir Bruce would say on more than one occasion that meeting his third wife was one of the ‘luckiest moments’ in his life.

Ruthless Hull put 14 tries past makeshift Salford side

Betfred Super League

Hull FC (50) 80

Tries: Martin 4, Barron 2, Cartwright 2, Litten 2, Cust, Ese’ese, Bourouh, Briscoe Goals: Hardaker 12

Salford (0) 6

Relentless Hull poured more misery on Salford as their makeshift, cobbled-together team were hammered 80-6.

The hosts scored six tries in 15 first-half minutes alone as they breezed to a 50-0 lead at the break, with Tom Briscoe notching his 100th try for the club in the second half.

The match was bordering on the farcical at times as Salford understandably looked like a team full of strangers who had no answer to the hosts, who ran in 14 tries in total – four of them from Lewis Martin.

The Red Devils have been hampered by a financial crisis which this week saw Ryan Brierley and Jack Ormondroyd become the 12th and 13th players to leave the club.

They signed seven players on loan this week alone, with five debutants in the matchday 17 and squad numbers going up to 63 as some players only met their team-mates on the bus drive to the stadium

A small band of fans who had made the thankless trip chanted “you’re not fit to run the club” at officials in the stand – with Hull fans applauding.

The home side could only beat the opposition in front of them and took less than two minutes to breakthrough as flying wing Martin scored in the left corner

Martin then put opposite wing Harvey Barron in to run on and score under the posts.

Jed Cartwright collected a clever kick from Will Pryce to add a third try inside 15 minutes before the clinical Barron went in again after quick hands put him away.

Salford looked done after 20 minutes, as Martin stepped inside to score his second and Cartwright galloped in untouched for a second of his own.

Davy Litten was the next to charge over as Salford’s possession was limited to kick-offs, and Martin completed his hat-trick before the half-hour mark and was followed over by Cade Cust.

Martin grabbed his fourth at the start of the second half to go top of the charts for this season with 20 tries, and Herman Ese’ese took advantage of Salford temporarily being down to 12 to barge over.

The video referee confirmed a try for former Salford man Amir Bourouh as he grounded the ball cleanly, and Litten ran on to a Cust kick to touch down the 13th try of the game.

The scoring did slow down before Zak Hardaker – who kicked 12 goals during the match – shrugged off a tackle to put Briscoe in for his landmark score, which puts him ninth in Super League’s all-time list with 174 in total.

‘It is a slow death’

Salford coach Paul Rowley told Sky Sports:

“It’s just sad to be honest, it was a tough watch, there is nothing fun about that.

“I represent the fans, it is a burden and a privilege in equal measures. We are here for them.

“It’s tough to see light at the minute, you just have to keep believing. The ownership group say there is light at the end of the tunnel.

“That is not my team, it is a bunch of loan players we have drafted in, they have bent the rules so we can fulfill fixtures. Some we met on the bus on the way here, it’s a rubbish situation.

“Everyone wants clarity on the situation, it is a slow death.”

Hull FC coach John Cartwright:

“It’s hard to know what to take out of the game, we were worried it was going to turn into a false game but we were ruthless in the first half.

“It is really sad the Salford situation, let’s just hope people are found accountable and it doesn’t happen again.

Hull FC: Pryce, Barron, Briscoe, Litten, Martin, Hardaker, Cust,

Ese’ese, Bourouh, Watts, Cartwright, Chamberlain, Asiata.

Interchanges: Aydin, Ashworth, Charles, Eseh.

Salford: Murphy, Lumb, Whitehead, Warren, S. Hill, Connell,

Nolan, Sangare, Yates, Lewis, Littlewood, Chan, Wilson.

Interchanges: Glover, Makin, Kerr, Dwyer

Bangor beat Reds on return as Blues and Coleraine win

Press Eye

Bangor made a winning start to their first Irish Premiership campaign in 16 years as they beat Cliftonville 3-1 at Clandeboye Park.

Goals from Kyle Owens, Ben Arthurs and Michael Morgan helped the newly- promoted side to victory on the opening day.

Kieran Offord scored a second-half hat-trick as champions Linfield got the defence of the Gibson Cup under way with a 3-0 win against Irish Cup winners Dungannon Swifts.

Bangor back with a bang

It was a frustrating first half for Cliftonville, who were denied by the crossbar twice in the opening 30 minutes.

The first when Odhran Casey’s header from a Rory Hale corner crashed off the woodwork, before Casey was denied once again when his strong strike rattled the crossbar.

The home side grew into the half with Lewis Ridd forced to make a smart save to deny Reece Neale’s free-kick.

Bangor would break the deadlock just four minutes before the break after another free-kick from Neale was denied by Ridd.

However, this time Bangor recycled the danger through Stephen McGuinness, who played the ball back for the unmarked Owens to tap home from close range.

In the 51st minute Cliftonville levelled the game when Casey’s cross from the left flank was fired into the back of the net by Ryan Curran at the back post.

Bangor appealed that there was a foul on stopper Gareth Deane by Jonny Addis as they both battled to connect with Casey’s delivery, but referee Tim Marshall waved away the appeals.

Arthurs would give the Seasiders the lead once again with 20 minutes to go after he nodded home Jack O’Mahony’s well-timed cross.

The Reds were denied by the woodwork for a third and final time when debutant Adebayo Fapetu’s thunderous effort from 25-yards pinged off the crossbar.

Offord on song for Linfield

The first half at Windsor Park was an open one, with both Linfield and Dungannon having a few chances.

The Blues thought they had broken the deadlock a few minutes before the break through the head of Matthew Fitzpatrick, but his goal was chalked off for offside.

Moments before the half-time whistle the visitors had their best opportunity when Andrew Mitchell found himself in acres of space at the back post, but he rushed his effort and headed wide of the far upright.

Just a few minutes into the second half, Offord broke the deadlock from the spot after Danny Wallace caught Fitzpatrick inside the box when attempting to clear the ball.

Linfield doubled their lead with 20 minutes remaining as Offord’s strike from the left-hand side had too much pace for Declan Dunne and flew through his legs.

Just a minute later Offord completed his hat-trick, this time with his head.

Clinical Cooper helps Coleraine to win

There was just four minutes left on the clock when Cooper, who had been well marshalled by the visitors’ defence up to that point, blasted home low past Rohan Ferguson to secure an opening day win for Ruadhri Higgins.

In a low-key first half, last season’s golden boot winner Matthew Shevlin had Coleraine’s best chance after the half-hour mark.

Put through by Levi Ives, the striker crashed a left foot shot off the base of the post with just Ferguson to beat.

At the other end, Daniel Bent tested Coleraine debutant goalkeeper Aidan Harris with a low shot, while Benji Magee flashed an effort into the side netting after racing clear.

Coleraine upped the tempo after the break and Larne had Ferguson to thank for two fine saves in quick succession, first to deny Jamie Glackin and then a 30-yard piledriver from Charles Dunne.
