China raises concerns over Nvidia’s H20 chips with local firms: Report

Chinese authorities have summoned domestic companies, including major internet firms Tencent and ByteDance, over their purchases of Nvidia’s H20 chips.

Authorities asked the companies on Tuesday to explain their reasons and expressed concerns over information risks, three people familiar with the matter told the Reuters news agency.

The Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) and other agencies also held meetings with Baidu and smaller Chinese tech firms in recent weeks, said one of the two people and a third source.

The Chinese officials asked companies why they needed to buy chips made by Nvidia, a US company, when they could purchase from domestic suppliers, the sources said.

Authorities in China expressed concern that the materials Nvidia has asked companies to submit for review with the US government could contain sensitive information, including client data, one of the sources said.

However, the people, who declined to be identified because the meetings were not public, said the companies have not been ordered to stop buying H20 chips.

Nvidia said on Tuesday that the H20 chip was “not a military product or for government infrastructure”.

“China has ample supply of domestic chips to meet its needs. It won’t and never has relied on American chips for government operations, just like the US government would not rely on chips from China,” the statement said.

Baidu, ByteDance, Tencent and the CAC did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Discouraged use

Earlier on Tuesday, Bloomberg News reported that Chinese authorities have urged domestic companies to avoid using Nvidia’s H20 chips, particularly for government-related purposes.

Several companies were issued official notices discouraging the use of the H20, a lower-end chip, mainly for any government or national security-related work by state enterprises or private companies, the report said, citing people familiar with the matter.

In a separate report, The Information reported that ByteDance, Alibaba and Tencent had been ordered by the CAC in the past two weeks to suspend Nvidia chip purchases altogether, citing data security concerns.

The CAC directive was communicated at a meeting the regulator held with more than a dozen Chinese tech firms, shortly after the administration of United States President Donald Trump reversed the export curbs on H20 chips, according to the Information report.

Reuters could not immediately confirm the reports, and Alibaba did not respond to a request for comment. Top contract chipmaker SMIC rose 5 percent on Tuesday on expectations of rising demand for locally-produced chips.

But even without an outright ban, the concerns expressed by Chinese authorities could threaten Nvidia’s recently restored access to the Chinese market as Chinese companies look to keep in step with regulators.

Nvidia designed the H20 specifically for China after export restrictions on its more advanced AI chips took effect in late 2023. The H20 has since been the most sophisticated AI chip Nvidia was allowed to sell in China.

Earlier this year, US authorities effectively banned its sale to China, but reversed the decision in July following an agreement between Nvidia and the Trump administration.

Threat to revenue stream

Last month, China’s cyberspace regulator summoned Nvidia representatives, asking the company to explain whether the H20 posed backdoor security risks that could affect Chinese user data and privacy.

State-controlled media have intensified criticism of Nvidia in recent days. Yuyuan Tantian, affiliated with state broadcaster CCTV, published an article on WeChat over the weekend claiming that H20 chips pose security risks and lack technological advancement and environmental friendliness.

The scrutiny threatens a significant revenue stream for Nvidia, which generated $17bn from sales to China in its fiscal year ended January 26, or 13 percent of total revenue.

China has accelerated work on domestic AI chip alternatives, with companies such as Huawei developing processors that rival the H20’s performance, and Beijing urging the technology sector to become more self-sufficient.

However, US sanctions on advanced chipmaking equipment, including lithography machines essential for chip production, have constrained domestic manufacturers’ ability to boost production.

On Monday, US President Donald Trump suggested that he might allow Nvidia to sell a scaled-down version of its advanced Blackwell chip in China, despite deep-seated fears in Washington that Beijing could harness US AI capabilities to supercharge its military.

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Tuesday that it hoped the US would act to maintain the stability and smooth operation of the global chip supply chain.

The Trump administration last week confirmed an unprecedented deal with Nvidia and AMD, which agreed to give the US government 15 percent of revenue from sales of some advanced chips in China.

China’s renewed guidance on avoiding chips also affects AI accelerators from AMD, Bloomberg also reported. It was not clear, however, whether any notices from Chinese authorities specifically mentioned AMD’s MI308 chip.

Tommy Fury’s dad, John Fury, has made a surprise admission when it comes to his son’s relationship with Molly-Mae Hague. The pair met on Love Island and went on to welcome baby daughter Bambi together.

However, after five years the couple initially split before reconciling and giving their coupling another go. After shocking their fans with their split, Tommy revealed he had been struggling with alcohol addiction.

And in the Tommy’s latest documentary, Tommy: The Good, The Bad, The Fury, it’s because of this addiction dad John says he told Molly-Mae to leave his son. The new series, which is set to air on BBC Three next week, will see John make his candid call.

John, who is also the dad of heavyweight boxer Tyson Fury, is heard in the first episode of the series saying: “I knew from dealing with Tyson that when the drinking started to come into play, I thought ‘Not again’.”

In the clip, which was shared on The Sun, John continued: “I did say to Molly because she came to me with this stuff, you know, and I said ‘What you are best off doing with him, Molly. is walking away because if he is not gonna change himself, he doesn’t think that much of you, does he?'”

The words come as Tommy is heard discussing his issues and his split from the Maebe founder. He discusses allegation of cheating, claims he continues to deny. He is heard saying the relationship breakdown came due to alcohol.

He has openly discussed his struggles in recent months. In January, the pugilist opened up about his drinking problems. He said at the time he became “addicted to drinking” and “couldn’t be the partner that he wanted to be anymore”.

Speaking about his drinking, he told Men’s Health : “It’s not like I’d get up in the morning and start drinking, but rather than sit in bed all day and fester, I’d think ‘why not go out?’

“Where I’d normally be in camp, I’d just be smashing Guinness left and centre and then later on in the night shots would come out.

Tommy and Molly-Mae have rekindled their romance and appear as happy as ever as they continue to share holiday snaps online. They were recently seen in Turkey as they shared a number of wholesome family memories with their social media followers.

The parents of one stayed at a £2,000 a night hotel, which “has been carefully curated to deliver a true family holiday without compromise” and boasts 553 spacious suites and private villas.

However, while many were on hand to praise the family, others hit out at the amount of holidays they had been taking. Former Love Island star Molly-Mae has been on at least ten holidays this year already after two trips to Dubai, Budapest, Paris, St. Moritz, and Disneyland Paris, as well as her most recent trip to Turkey.

‘Shoddy, shabby & not good enough’ – but Rangers do what they need to

SNS

“It’s better to be lucky than good.”

An old adage which sums up Rangers’ run in the qualifiers of the Champions League so far rather neatly.

The good news is they are now just two games – or one tie – away from the league phase, with Club Brugge of Belgium standing in their way.

Making it to the play-off round is arguably an over-achievement in itself, given the tricky draw against Panathinaikos in the last round and a squad being rebuilt under a new head coach.

But boss Russell Martin is under no illusion about the scale of the improvements needed.

You do not have to trawl through advanced statistics to work out Rangers have had their goalkeeper Jack Butland and some terrible profligacy from their opponents to thank in their two ties so far.

“We have a lot to work on, but we’re through,” Martin told BBC Scotland after Rangers overcame Viktoria Plzen on aggregate despite a 2-1 second-leg loss.

Rangers masters of own problems

It was obvious why Martin was unhappy. In Plzen, Rangers conceded 27 shots, a staggering 21 of them coming from inside their penalty area.

As a result, the Czech side ended with an expected goals rating of 3.31, with Butland making eight saves, with the one to deny Prince Adu truly world class.

Given Rangers’ impressive first-leg performance, a one-off poor display with a comfortable 3-0 aggregate lead could be forgiven given the end result.

But early in the season, it has been a pattern. Rangers have conceded 97 shots in their six games so far, an average of 16 per game.

Had Plzen, Panathinaikos, Motherwell, or even Dundee been more clinical then it could easily be a different story in this nascent campaign.

“Plzen had four 100% chances and took one of them – and they all came from Rangers’ mistakes,” former Rangers midfielder Ian McCall said on Sportsound.

“They were shoddy and shabby, but the name of the game is getting into the next round.

Rangers' pass map against Viktoria Plzen shows how they struggled to get the ball into forward areasOpta

Rangers’ inability to keep the ball and move it up the pitch, instead gifting it back to Plzen, was something Martin picked out too.

“There were some good moments we didn’t make the most of, but I’m disappointed with the number of shots and chances they have and most of it is self-inflicted,” the Rangers head coach added.

“Our level of quality on the ball and decision making wasn’t good enough.”

Wingers Oliver Antman and Djeidi Gassama, so influential in the first-leg victory, were hardly in the game before being substituted in the second half. Mainly because Rangers could not get the ball to them.

Their biggest passing combinations on the night were between Butland and his two centre-backs.

‘Brugge will not miss gifts’

Other than going through, the big positive on the night was Lyall Cameron grabbing his first Rangers goal, capping off a solid individual performance.

Butland’s form is also a big plus given his struggles in the second half of last season and, despite the obvious flaws, Rangers have found a knack of coming up with big goals in Europe regardless of the momentum in games.

However, that is not a sustainable recipe for success in European football’s premier competition.

Club Brugge will undoubtedly be a step up. Last season they reached the last 16 of the Champions League, eventually losing to Aston Villa.

The teams shared a 2-2 draw at Ibrox in pre-season, so there will be a degree of familiarity, as much as a friendly can replicate competitive action.

“If Rangers were playing against a better quality of team, even with the 3-0 lead, this game could have gone to extra-time or they could have lost it,” former Rangers striker Steven Thompson said on Sportsound.

‘Rangers were not good. Against a better team, this could have gone to extra time’

Andy C: It’s grim watching. So many times the Gers gave the ball away under self-inflicted pressure. Souttar and Butland seem to be the only two who know what they’re doing.

Graham: How long is it going to take for the players to adapt to the new “style of play” before the fans lose faith? Because right now I see no improvements at all, if anything the last few games I’ve watched has been the worst watch in years.

Ray: All that matters is they are through that’s it. If they play as badly against Brugge and go through that’s all that matters as well. You need good players to play Martin’s system and the extra money may well help him in that quest.

Brian: Another woefully poor performance from this team – I honestly don’t know what is going on under Martin and I fear that it’s not going to end well and will only set the club back even further. Sloppy defending and wasteful on the counter.

Newcastle sign defender Thiaw from AC Milan

Newcastle United have completed the signing of AC Milan defender Malick Thiaw.

The Germany international, 24, joins Eddie Howe’s side for a reported £34.6m, including add-ons.

He is the Magpies’ third signing of a tricky summer of recruitment, after winger Anthony Elanga’s arrival from Nottingham Forest and goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale on loan from Southampton.

“I’m really excited to join this massive club. I can’t wait to start training and to get to know my new team-mates and all the staff,” said Thiaw.

“The gaffer showed me his vision and what he wants to do with me as a player and the club itself, which is really exciting.

Bringing in a new centre-back was a priority for Newcastle this summer as manager Howe looks to increase competition and lower the average age of an experienced squad.

But getting deals over the line has been a tall order, with the Magpies missing out on several targets across all positions, including Benjamin Sesko, Hugo Ekitike, Joao Pedro and James Trafford.

There has also been speculation over the future of striker Alexander Isak, who is determined to leave the club and join Liverpool.

Howe said: “We’re really pleased to have Malick on board. He’s a player I’ve admired for a long time and somebody who will add real quality to our defensive options.

“Malick is still young but brings valuable experience of Champions League football, as well as playing in the Bundesliga and Serie A, which is a major positive for us as we return to Europe this season.”

Thiaw, who has three caps for Germany, joined AC Milan from Schalke in 2022.

He made 31 appearances in all competitions for the Serie A giants last season, scoring his only goal of the campaign against Real Madrid in the Champions League in November.
