Test cricket could ‘bankrupt’ nations – Aussie CEO

The traditional Test calendar could lead to bankruptcy for certain nations, Cricket Australia chief Todd Greenberg warned as he called for a slimmed-down schedule.

Greenberg wants quality prioritised over quantity to ensure a viable future for red-ball cricket.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) recently set up a working group to discuss the Test format and the potential to introduce a two-tier system.

“Scarcity in Test cricket is our friend, not our foe,” said Greenberg.

“I don’t think everyone in world cricket needs to aspire to play Test cricket, and that might be OK.

Greenberg wants to see marquee series such as the Ashes between England and Australia – the 2025-26 series gets under way in Australia in 100 days’ time – receive greater investment.

The pulsating five-match series between England and India this summer was Test cricket at its finest.

However, Australia won each of their three Tests in the West Indies by at least 133 runs, while New Zealand cruised to a comfortable series victory in Zimbabwe – winning one of the Tests by an innings and 359 runs.

“We need to make sure we invest in the right spaces to play Test cricket where it means something and has jeopardy,” Greenberg added.

“That’s why the Ashes will be as enormous and profitable as it is – because it means something.”

Sam Thompson breaks silence on ex Zara’s steamy ‘hard launch’ of Louis Tomlinson romance

Sam Thompson has spoken out after seeing his ex Zara McDermott ‘hard launch’ her relationship with Louis Tomlinson as he admitted he ‘wouldn’t wish it on anyone’

Sam Thompson has broken his silence after his ex, Zara McDermott, went public with her relationship with Louis Tomlinson, posting a snap of the pair snogging on Instagram.

The Love Island star has been dating the One Direction singer for several months following her break-up with Sam in January, which the Made In Chelsea alum admitted left him ‘blindsided’.

Zara, 28, and Louis, 33, have so far kept relatively coy about their relationship, but now Zara has made it ‘Insta official’ and 33 year old Sam’s not happy. It comes after the I’m A Celebrity winner admitted he needed help after their split.

Talking to his pal, Pete Wicks, on their podcast, Staying Relevant, Sam said his phone ‘blew up’ after Zara posted the snap of her locking lips with Louis last week.

He said: “I’m watching some YouTube video and my phone just starts blowing up. I thought I’d been cancelled!”

Sam continued: “Mate it’s dinged up, you know when everyone is like, ‘Just checking in mate, is everything ok?’ and I’m looking at my phone like ‘What is going on?’

“And genuinely you know what it’s like when you don’t quite know what’s happened so you think the worst. Tell you what though, I wouldn’t wish a hard launch on my worst enemy though.”

It comes after Pete admitted he never liked one of Sam’s exes, but wouldn’t say which one.

During one episode of their podcast, Pete agreed to take a lie detector test and was asked by Sam: “Have you any disliked any of my previous partners?”

Hesitating for a second, he then laughed and said “yes.” After he was revealed to be telling the truth Sam squealed: “Yes, truthful!”

Earlier in the week, the reality star asked fans for help as he admitted he was struggling post Zara. Talking to the listeners on Hits Radio, he revealed he was using dating app, Hinge.

Sam confessed: “I’m on Hinge everybody. I have decided to give dating apps a go, because the dating world is the trenches out there and I need a bit of help.”

While Sam had no issues choosing the perfect pictures and videos of himself to show off his best qualities, he admitted that answering the prompts had left him frustrated.

The reality TV star joked: “One of them is ‘I’d fall for you if…’ And I just don’t know what I think, to be honest with you I’d fall for you if you say you like me. If you turn round and say I like you, I’m done that’s all it takes with me. And ‘my cry in the car song?’ Anything by One Direction really….”

Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen says he broke down in tears after harrowing Netflix experience

Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen and his wife Jackie have been married for 36 years, but the changing rooms star says he had a cry with his wife after a near-death experience

Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen

Television personality Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen revealed that both he and his wife, Jackie, had a cry following his near-death experience on the set of a programme.

Laurence and Jackie, both aged 60, spoke after the legendary designer had to be resuscitated after becoming stuck beneath a vessel while recording Celebrity Bear Hunt for Netflix.

The ex-Changing Rooms host blacked out while caught under a boat and required two and a half oxygen cylinders to regain awareness.

Once he had physically healed, the mental effects struck him, and he phoned his wife of 36 years to talk through what happened.

He told Woman’s Weekly: “I’ve been apologising to Netflix ever since for causing such fuss. When I eventually left the camp and got back to the hotel, I rang Jackie and we both had a good old cry over Zoom.

“It was a life-affirming moment, absolutely. Whenever you get to the other side of a difficult or dangerous situation, you think, ‘Oh gosh, I got away with that.'”

This is not the first time Laurence has discussed his wellbeing or his thoughts on mortality, particularly after reports emerged that he had transferred ownership of his Cotswolds property to his sons-in-law.

Laurence explained he reached this decision following the Netflix programme, presented by Holly Willoughby and Bear Grylls, and went through an “end of life” crisis.

He resides at his Cotswolds property alongside his wife, their youngest daughter Hermione, and her partner. His eldest daughter, Cecile, also lives on the same estate with her husband and their two children.

Speaking to the Sunday Times, he said: “One of the most amusing things was having to sit down with a solicitor for them to assess whether Jackie and I were being coerced into this by our bullying sons-in-law.

“Our friends just can’t believe it. They go, ‘what happens if you all fall out?’ We’re not going to be those old people sitting on a great big pile of cash. Terribly unhappy, terribly lonely.

“Owning a lot of stuff but not actually having the benefit of it. We are very, very privileged, but we have made this decision. We have manifested this life.”

Elaborating on the choice, Laurence told the Manchester Evening News that the decision to hand over the property now wasn’t challenging.

He explained: “We’ve worked very hard to make the life we want. After thirty years on television, I’ve worked very hard to get here.

“With things now like us all living together and how we’ve split the house up, which everyone is so intrigued about, that’s a decision.

Meghan Markle shocks fans with Prince Harry confession in new Netflix trailer

The Duchess of Sussex has released a sneak peek at the second series of With Love, Meghan, and she gives fresh insight into what Prince Harry is really like to live with

Meghan has shared one of Harry’s unusual food dislikes in the With Love, Meghan trailer

Meghan Markle has given fans a fresh glimpse into what Prince Harry is really like in a new trailer for her latest Netflix collaboration.

The Duchess is set to launch the second series of her cooking and lifestyle show – With Love, Meghan – in a matter of days after the first series was panned by critics.

Sharing the teaser on Instagram, Meghan wrote: “The best moments are made to be shared. With Love, Meghan returns August 26th on @netflix.”

While fans were quick to point out the celebrity guests set to appear on the show, others were stunned by an admission Meghan made about her husband. It comes after reports that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s new Netflix deal could cause ‘concern’ for Royal Family.

In the last few seconds of the trailer, Meghan is chatting candidly with famous chef José Andrés. She is then seen telling the cook: “Do you know who doesn’t like lobster? My husband.”

The chef then cheekily responded: “And you married him?!” prompting Meghan to laugh.

In the short preview of the second series, Queer Eye star Tan France and Chrissy Teigen make an appearance as guests in Meghan’s house.

Other celeb cameos include Christina Tosi, Clare Smyth, Daniel Martin, David Chang, Heather Dorak, Jamie Kern Lima, Jay Shetty, José Andrés, Radhi Devlukia and Samin Nosrat.

The trailer showed Meghan cooking and baking with her famous pals. “I love the idea of just spending time together… and finding new ways to show people you care,” she says. “There are easy ways to show up, lovingly.”

With Love, Meghan, season one was released in March but failed to break into the top 300 most-watched shows on the streaming platform in the first six months of 2025, and was widely panned by critics.

In the eight-part first season of the show, the former Suits actress gives hosting tips and cooks with celebrity friends including The Office star Mindy Kaling, whom Meghan tells she goes by the surname Sussex now.

Harry made just one appearance at the end of the first season’s final episode when he joined Meghan, her mother Doria Ragland and friends for an outdoor celebratory brunch.

The preview comes just hours after Meghan and Harry announced they have signed a second deal with Netflix, after weeks of speculation that their partnership would be coming to an end in September.

Five years ago, Harry and Meghan secured a lucrative contract, thought to be worth more than 100 million dollars (£74 million), with Netflix after quitting as senior working royals in 2020 – but this new extension is seen as a downgrade on their previous exclusive rights deal and is believed to be worth a lot less .

Meghan, who has a partnership with Netflix for her As Ever brand, said of the new contract: “We’re proud to extend our partnership with Netflix and expand our work together to include the As Ever brand.

Noel Edmonds shares major life update amid denying his ITV show was ‘axed’

Noel Edmonds has announced that he’s now bought another property outside of the UK, though not in New Zealand this time, after moving abroad with his wife six years ago

Presenter Noel Edmonds has announced that he’s now bought another property outside of the UK after moving away. He previously updated fans on his new life in New Zealand, which he has said will remain his “principal home”.

Noel, 76, known for TV shows like Deal or No Deal, moved abroad with his wife Liz Davies, 55, six years ago. Their relocation was the subject of the three-part Noel Edmonds’ Kiwi Adventure, which was launched on ITV back in June.

The former radio host has confirmed this month that New Zealand will remain his primary home but has announced that he’s now bought a property elsewhere. It comes after reports that ITV ‘axed’ his big TV comeback.

Noel has announced that he’s bought a property on the Isle of Man. He told Manx Radio recently: “I have purchased a property on the island and I intend to spend some of the year here [but] my principal home is New Zealand.”

The former Top of the Pops host said that he first visited the island three years ago and questioned why he hadn’t been before. Noel shared in the interview: “When you consider that I’d lived in the UK all my life and I knew where it was geographically, I don’t know why I didn’t come before.”

Noel, who has nicknamed the location as the “Smile of Man,” because “everyone’s happy,” said that the residents seem to “look out for each other”. He added: “I tell you the other thing that really impressed me – you’re bloody proud of the island, and you’re proud of the community, and across the water there [in the UK], you don’t get that anymore.”

The news comes following the news that Noel Edmonds’ Kiwi Adventure won’t return for more episodes on ITV. The show centred on his new life in New Zealand with his wife Liz, including as the couple set up a hospitality business River Haven.

ITV has said that there aren’t any plans for more episodes of the project. A spokesperson told the Daily Mail earlier this month: “There are no current plans for more new episodes but audiences can enjoy the show on ITVX.”

It was reported that it had been “axed” by ITV. A source had told the Sun that the apparent cancellation was “a blow” to Noel, who reportedly thought that he was “on to a winning idea”. They added: “There was a great buzz around the series and it was well received by both viewers and critics alike.”

Noel however has dismissed the claim that it was cancelled, with him telling his followers on Instagram recently that he declined the opportunity to film again. He said that the contract had only ever been for three instalments.

He said: “They only ever contracted to three films.” He said that when asked earlier this year if him and Liz would like to “do more,” they declined. Noel said in a video message shared this morning: “No aggravation. We just said ‘no, thank you. We don’t want to do any more’. So, it wasn’t axed.”

Noel had previously confirmed that the show wouldn’t be returning. He said in a video message just days ago: “Thank you for the very positive response to the three films we made last year. There won’t be any more films on ITV.”

He said that fans would still get updates from him though. Noel continued: “However, the adventure will be continuing and you’ll be able to do stay up to date with events in my life and what is going on at River Haven in New Zealand on YouTube and on social media, or when you stop me in the street because all you seem to want to do is talk about the Kiwi adventure.”

Does a Trump-brokered deal squeeze Russia, Iran out of the South Caucasus?

Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev, his late father and predecessor Heydar Aliyev and some of their closest political allies hail from Nakhchivan.

The name of this tiny, mountainous and underdeveloped Azeri area sandwiched between Armenia, Iran and Turkiye sounds unfamiliar to those outside the strategic South Caucasus region.

But Nakhchivan’s name and geopolitical significance resurfaced after United States President Donald Trump hosted a White House summit between Azeri and Armenian leaders on Friday.

Azerbaijan’s Aliyev and the Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan signed a preliminary peace deal to end the decades-long conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh.

In the early 1990s, ethnic Armenians in the Nagorno-Karabakh region broke away from oil-rich Azerbaijan after a war that killed thousands and displaced hundreds of thousands.

Moscow brokered a truce in 1994, maintaining two military bases in resource-poor Armenia, supplying it with cheap energy while selling arms to Azerbaijan.

Even though the conflict did not involve Nakhchivan, it cut off the Zangezur Corridor, a 40km (25-mile) logistical umbilical cord to Azeri mainland that consists of a derelict road and parallel rusty rail tracks.

Air travel and hours-long, bumpy transit through Iran remained the only way to reach the exclave, whose authorities ruled it like a personal fiefdom, with laws and ways of life often contradicting those of the mainland.

After winning the 2020 war over Nagorno-Karabakh and restoring control over it three years later, Baku has been eager to revive the corridor, demanding its exterritoriality and even pondering the use of military force.

‘A new reality in the region’

The reasons go far beyond restoring access to Aliyev’s ancestral land. The corridor could become a mammoth transport hub between Turkiye, Azerbaijan and Central Asia.

It may increase the flow of Central Asian hydrocarbons to Turkiye and further to Europe, boost the regional economy – and upend Russia’s two centuries of domination in the region that also includes Georgia.

Armenia was reluctant to allow Azeri access to the corridor, fearing that the emboldened Turkish-Azeri tandem may jeopardise its security.

But Trump cut through the Gordian knot on Friday, and his role “essentially, cements a new reality in the region”, according to Emil Mustafayev, the Baku-based chief editor of the Minval Politika online magazine.

“This is a serious shift in the security architecture and transport logistics of the South Caucasus,” he told Al Jazeera.

While in the White House, Aliyev and Pashinyan lavished Trump with praise and nominated him for a Nobel Peace Prize.

“What cracked me up is that [they] didn’t lose their way about how one has to communicate in Washington,” Andrey Kazantsev, an expert on the region, told Al Jazeera.

They also flattered Trump by naming the corridor the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP) and leasing it to Washington for up to 99 years with exclusive development rights.

What looks like one of Trump’s favourite real estate deals actually heralds a tectonic shift.

“Trump’s administration has indeed been quick to find its way towards the long-due geopolitical pivot,” Kazantsev said.

China, which has been promoting its Belt and Road Initiative in Asia and Eastern Europe, may remain “neutral” to it, and Russia, which has two military bases in Armenia, may “ignore it, at least, publicly”, he said. “But for Iran, it’s a real blow.”

‘A boost of Washington’s clout’

To guard the TRIPP, Washington may use a private military company – and eventually build a military base that nominally safeguards Armenia but actually keeps an eye on Iran, said Ukrainian political analyst Aleksey Kushch.

“It means more potential pressure on Iran and a boost of Washington’s clout in the resource-rich Caspian region where US oil companies made sizeable investments” in the 1990s, he said.

And Moscow is also about to lose a lot.

“No matter how paradoxical it sounds, it’s Moscow that has been and still is a decisive factor in the peace settlement between Armenia and Azerbaijan and in solving the latter’s problem of accessing Nakhchivan,” said Alisher Ilkhamov, head of Central Asia Due Diligence, a think tank in London.

“One of the main motives for rapprochement of both sides is their push to get rid of Moscow’s influence, of the peacekeeper’s role it has imposed on them,” he told Al Jazeera.

The new deal “only highlights how fictitious Moscow’s role as peacekeeper and middleman in peace settlement in the South Caucasus is”, Ilkhamov said.

However, the deal is not yet set in stone, and the Trump-hosted summit “sparked premature optimism”, said Kevork Oskanian of the University of Exeter, in the United Kingdom.

This optimism “should be tempered by realism and historical precedent [as] many peace processes have failed despite promising starts”, he told Al Jazeera.

A deal not yet done

Baku, whose annual $5bn defence spending exceeds Yerevan’s entire debt-hobbled state budget, affirmed Armenia’s territorial integrity but did not withdraw from some 200sq km (77sq miles) of its land.

The TRIPP’s concept avoids Baku’s demand for the corridor’s extraterritoriality, balancing sovereignty with strategic access, Oskanian said.

But there are also questions as to whether Washington’s initiatives are “a principled intervention or opportunistic geopolitics”, he added.

Even without direct confrontation, Moscow and Tehran could try to undermine the deal.

“Their grudging acquiescence is essential – but far from guaranteed,” Oskanian said.

Iran threatened on Saturday that the TRIPP “will not become a gateway for Trump’s mercenaries – it will become their graveyard”.

Armenia is a democracy “polarised” over the loss of Nagorno-Karabakh and Pashinyan’s conflict with the Armenian Apostolic Church, Oskanian said.

To finalise the peace deal, Pashinyan would need to hold a referendum amending Armenia’s constitution that mentions the “reunification” with Nagorno-Karabakh – and win the 2026 parliamentary vote.
