Israeli attacks kill 123 in Gaza as three more children die of hunger

At least 123 Palestinians, including 21 people seeking aid, have been killed and 437 others were injured in Israeli attacks across Gaza in the past 24 hour reporting period, according to the Health Ministry in the besieged territory.

In the same period, at least eight people, including three children, died from Israeli-imposed starvation and malnutrition, bringing the total number of hunger-related deaths since the war began in October, 2023 to 235, among them 106 children, the ministry said on Wednesday.

Philippe Lazzarini, head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), described the deaths as “the latest in the war on children and childhood in Gaza”.

“This is in addition to: over 40,000 children reported killed or injured due to bombardment and airstrikes, at least 17,000 unaccompanied and separated children, and one million deeply traumatised children and out of education,” he wrote in a post on X.

“Children are children. No one should stay silent when children die, or are brutally deprived of a future, wherever these children are, including in Gaza.”

Ceasefire talks to restart

As the death toll continues to rise in Gaza, a delegation from the Palestinian group Hamas was scheduled to begin discussions in Egypt over a potential ceasefire on Wednesday.

The previous round of indirect ceasefire talks in Qatar ended in deadlock in late July, after Israel and the United States withdrew their delegations hours after Hamas submitted its response to a truce proposal.

The talks in Cairo will focus on ways to stop the war, deliver aid, and “end the suffering of our people in Gaza”, Hamas official Taher al-Nono said.

A Palestinian official familiar with the negotiations told the news agency Reuters that “Hamas believes negotiation is the only way to end the war and is open to discuss any ideas that would secure an end to the war”.

A Hamas representative also told Reuters the group was willing to hand over governance of Gaza to a non-partisan committee, but would not give up its weapons before a Palestinian state is established.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has promised to continue the war until Hamas is “destroyed”.

Israeli military plan to seize Gaza City

Israel’s security cabinet last week approved plans to take control of Gaza City, despite international condemnation from the United Nations and dissent from within Israel’s own military.

However, earlier Wednesday, the military said its chief of staff, Eyal Zamir, had signed off on the “main framework” for the operational plan during a meeting with top commanders, Shin Bet representatives and senior officers.

According to the statement, Zamir “emphasised the importance of increasing troop readiness and preparedness for reserve recruitment, while conducting proficiency training and providing breathing space ahead of the upcoming missions”.

Al Jazeera’s Hani Mahmoud, reporting from Gaza City, said Israeli forces appeared to be in the preparatory stage of the expanded invasion, hitting multiple neighbourhoods overnight.

“Explosions [were] clearly heard from the eastern part of Gaza City, particularly near the Zeitoun neighbourhood and surrounding areas as far as the Sabra neighbourhood,” Mahmoud reported. “Seven people were reported killed overnight from a mixture of heavy artillery and air strikes targeting major residential clusters.”

In the city’s Sheikh Radwan neighbourhood, three more people were reportedly killed as they fled the area.

Mahmoud said the Zikim crossing, the main entry point for aid in northern Gaza, had become “deadly for Palestinians”, with limited aid trucks allowed through despite crowds of desperate people.

“More people are dying there, either from deliberate Israeli military fire or from the stampede,” he said.

Aid restrictions criticised

Foreign ministers from 24 countries, including the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, France and Japan, said on Tuesday the humanitarian crisis in Gaza had reached “unimaginable levels” and urged Israel to allow unrestricted aid into the enclave.

The entreaty follows months, from March until May, of Israel blockading the enclave, until eventually allowing limited aid deliveries via the controversial US-backed GHF.

Amid growing international criticism over the hunger crisis, restrictions on aid supplies were further eased slightly in late July, with dozens of aid trucks entering Gaza on some days. But UNRWA says 500–600 trucks of aid are needed daily, but that aid getting into the Strip remains a fraction of that figure – while many Palestinians are killed on their way to collect aid.

Mahmoud added that there was growing international condemnation of Israel “for creating the humanitarian crisis in Gaza”, but no change on the ground.

Why has the Man City 115 charges case taken so long?

Manchester City and the Premier League are awaiting the verdict after a hearing into the 115 charges the club have faced since February 2023.

The charges relate to a number of alleged rule breaches by City between 2009 and 2018.

The number of charges and severity of the accusations are among the reasons the case has taken as long as it has.

“The word ‘unprecedented’ is often used more than it should be in the footballing world, but in this case it really is justified,” said lawyer Simon Leaf – head of sport at Mishcon de Reya.

City’s hearing started in September 2024 and lasted 10 weeks. In February 2025, manager Pep Guardiola said the club expected to learn the verdict “within one month”.

Six months on, the outcome is yet to be made public.

“We have never seen anything like this type of case in the history of English football and arguably in world football,” added Leaf.

What are Manchester City’s 115 charges?

The 115 charges have been broken down to five different categories.

54x Failure to provide accurate financial information 2009-10 to 2017-18.

14x Failure to provide accurate details for player and manager payments from 2009-10 to 2017-18.

5x Failure to comply with Uefa’s rules including Financial Fair Play (FFP) 2013-14 to 2017-18.

7x Breaching Premier League’s PSR rules 2015-16 to 2017-18.

35x Failure to co-operate with Premier League investigations December 2018 – Feb 2023.

The lengths City went to in their defence appear to have prolonged matters.

“The legal teams involved… I’m pretty sure the Premier League has never come up against anything like this,” said Yasin Patel – barrister at Church Court Chambers.

“The team of lawyers Manchester City have assembled… call it a super team if you want.

“There’s a lot riding on it for the Premier League as well as Manchester City.”

There have been suggestions by the Times and football finance expert Kieran Maguire the number of charges is as high as 130.

“I think the Premier League will have been taken aback, as well as the arbitration panel really, how Manchester City have come with their defence,” added Patel.

A lot of football fans have drawn comparisons to the cases brought by the Premier League against Nottingham Forest and Everton respectively over breaches to Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

During the 2023-24 season, both clubs were docked points for making more losses than they were permitted to for the three-year period from the 2020-21 to 2022-23 seasons.

Those cases were of a single charge, were easier to decipher and involved significantly less evidence.

“The Forest and Everton cases were, to a certain extent, very clear-cut. They were an open-and-shut case,” said Maguire.

“There was 50,000 pieces of evidence put forward by both parties.

“In the case of Manchester City, you’re going to have to multiply that by probably a factor of 10, so we could be looking at half a million pieces of evidence, which have to be reflected upon by the three people in the commission.

“They’re also in demand in their own jobs so trying to get them around a table on a regular basis isn’t necessarily easy and that’s why eight months later we’re still not really further down the road in terms of a conclusion to the evidence referral and then making a verdict.”

Earlier this month, Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy said the process had “gone on for far too long”.

In response, Premier League CEO Richard Masters told BBC Sport: “The only point where I can speak publicly about it is when a decision has been handed down.

“I can’t speculate about why or when, that’s all I can say really. Daniel is not in the same position as me and I can’t talk about it.”

When could we hear a verdict?

While there is frustration among many football supporters that a verdict has not been made public, those involved will know the importance of getting it right.

“The latest rumours, and they are nothing but rumours, is we could be waiting until around about October before a verdict,” said Maguire.

“There has been a complete lockdown. There are no leaks. I think this is indicative of the level of professionalism of the people who are on the commission.”

Patel was clear a verdict would not be rushed.

He said: “I suppose the public message from the panel will be: ‘We are trying to get this decision as quickly as possible so we can get this over and done with.’

“None of the fans are going to believe that.

“No matter how much the fans jump up and down all around the country, I’m afraid no panel is going to be rushed.”

Patel also thinks the longer the wait, the “better it is for Manchester City”.

“We all know what some of the potential penalties are, in particular points deductions, and I would have thought they would have given them by now,” he added.

Why the verdict will not be the end

Whoever comes out on top – be it the Premier League or Manchester City – it is almost certain the verdict will not bring the saga to an end.

If the Premier League wins, clubs who have perhaps lost titles or in cup competitions to City during the period covered by the charges may claim for loss of earnings, be it through prize money or competitions they failed to qualify for.

If City win, they could claim for damages caused as a result of the case.

“Whatever comes out of it, I’m afraid that’s not the end of the title race for both parties here,” said Patel. “This is a two-horse race that’s going to carry on.”

“Whatever verdict comes out, I wouldn’t think that’s the end of it. I would appeal, whether I was on one side or the other.”

Hodgkinson set for long-awaited return in Silesia

Getty Images

Keely Hodgkinson is set to contest her first race since being crowned Olympic 800m champion 12 months ago, while fellow Briton Georgia Hunter Bell targets her third Diamond League win of the season in Silesia, Poland.

England’s Hodgkinson, who suffered setbacks during her recovery from a hamstring injury sustained in February, will make her long-awaited return to competitive action just four weeks before the start of the World Championships in Tokyo.

The 23-year-old, a two-time world silver medallist, will race over 800m in Silesia – an event that is not part of the Diamond League programme at this meeting.

Training partner Hunter Bell contests the women’s 1500m as the Olympic bronze medallist weighs up whether to target that event in Tokyo, or join Hodgkinson in the 800m.

Following 800m wins at the Diamond League events in Stockholm and London, Hunter Bell will test herself against Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay and Diribe Welteji in a high-quality line-up.

Also in Silesia, Dina Asher-Smith takes on world champion Sha’Carri Richardson in the women’s 100m, while Daryll Neita and Amy Hunt are up against two-time world champion Shericka Jackson in the 200m.

World indoor champion Amber Anning is in the women’s 400m, and the men’s 1500m features Neil Gourley.

Armand Duplantis – who this week broke the men’s pole vault world record for the 13th time – Faith Kipyegon, Noah Lyles and Femke Bol are among the global stars in action.

Watch the Silesia Diamond League action on BBC Two, BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website and app from 15:00-17:00 BST on Friday.

The 2024 Diamond League winners celebrate with their trophies on a podiumGetty Images

The 16th Diamond League season is under way as athletics’ Olympic stars build towards their shot at world glory in 2025.

Athletes compete for points in 32 disciplines in a bid to qualify for the finals in Zurich in August.

That takes place just over a fortnight before the start of the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan.

All Diamond League events will be shown on the BBC, which has agreed a deal to broadcast the competition for the next five years.

It is also the first year in which the Diamond League must compete with Michael Johnson’s new Grand Slam Track for athletes’ attention.

However, there has been only one direct clash between the two competitions – with the Miami Slam on 2-4 May taking place at the same time as the meet in Keqiao, China on 3 May.

The Diamond League has increased its prize money to a total of $9.24m (£6.95m) across the series.

How does the Diamond League work?

Athletes will compete for points at the 14 regular series meetings which started in April and run through to August.

Points are awarded on a scale from eight for first place to one for eighth place.

After the 14th meeting in Brussels, the top six ranked athletes in the field events, the top eight in track events from 100m up to 800m, and the top 10 in the distances from 1500m upwards qualify for the finals.

Romero Replaces Son As Spurs Captain

Cristian Romero has been named as Tottenham’s new captain after the departure of club legend Son Heung-min.

Son, who had worn the armband for the last two seasons and lifted the Europa League in May as Spurs ended their 17-year wait for a trophy, joined LAFC earlier this month.

Romero had acted as vice-captain for the previous two years and started the Europa League final win over Manchester United as skipper before Son came off the bench in the second half.

The 27-year-old Argentine will lead his side out when Tottenham take on European champions Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday.

“I had a good conversation with Cuti Romero and he’s going to be our captain,” new Tottenham manager Thomas Frank told the official club website.

“He was very honoured and very happy about it. It’s a big thing and should be to lead this wonderful club out on the pitch, not just for this Super Cup, but also throughout the season.

“I think he has all the right qualities. He leads from his behaviour on the pitch, driving the team forward in every way and outside the pitch he’s always pushing the team.”

Romero, who joined Spurs from Atalanta four years ago, was part of the Argentina side that won the 2022 World Cup.

Beckham feud update as Nicola and Brooklyn turn against his brothers and sister

Brooklyn Beckham failed to invite his family members to his wedding vow renewal with his wife Nicola Peltz, and it turns out his brothers were intentionally given the cold shoulder

Brooklyn Beckham renewed his wedding vows to Nicola Peltz, shockingly without inviting any of his family, including his parents and siblings. Speculation was rife about the whereabouts of the Beckham family, and it appears two of Brooklyn’s brothers were intentionally snubbed.

Earlier this week, Brooklyn and his wife Nicola shared heartwarming photos on Instagram from their special day, when they lovingly renewed their vows just three years after tying the knot. The bride was surrounded by her loved ones, wearing her mother’s dress and as her dad officiated the ceremony, but Brooklyn’s extended family was nowhere to be seen.

The aspiring chef is thought to have been caught up in an estrangement with his family since his wedding day, with the feud escalating after he missed his dad’s 50th birthday celebrations earlier this year. It comes after Cruz Beckham ‘steals’ his dad’s tiny white trunks and family have epic response.

In a fresh blow to the Beckham feud, Brooklyn’s parents, Victoria and David Beckham, were reportedly kept in the dark about his upcoming vow renewals, along with his siblings, Cruz, Harper, and Romeo, as well as his grandparents, cousins, aunts, and uncles. It is thought that none of the Beckhams were invited because Brooklyn did not want his parents present, but there could be a more cynical reason.

Insiders close to Nicola and Brooklyn revealed that his brothers Romeo and Cruz were unwelcome to their vows, following what they allege are a series of online jibes from the pair.

“Brooklyn’s brothers have been fanning the flames..they’ve openly made fun of and trolled Brooklyn in comments on social media,” said the pal.

One comment under the spotlight was when Cruz responded to a post from a user asking him if he was “going to stick with this job or going to become a race car driver next or something?” To which Cruz, seemingly referring to his brother Brooklyn’s many career paths, responded: “Wrong brother mate”.

Others have speculated that Nicola is seeking “any reason” to distance Brooklyn further from his brothers, having previously been accused of “isolating” her husband from not only his family but also his friends.

Other friends of the couple claim it was difficult not to invite sister Harper, who is close to Brooklyn, as well as his grandparents. The pal said: “They are trying to make the best decisions for them in what are very unfortunate circumstances. Navigating family stuff is hard and it’s ugly.”

Remarkably, they still hold out hope for a reconciliation. The friend added: “The door is open. No one wants to see this kind of pain exist. There is always hope. At the end of the day. Blood is thicker than water.”

Eamonn Holmes gushes over ‘unconditional love’ who ‘changed him’ after marriage split

GB News host Eamonn Holmes said while he feels “unconditional” love towards his female companion, his disability has got in the way of their relationship

Eamonn Holmes opened up about his love for his dog Maggie

Eamonn Holmes has opened up about the “unconditional love” he feels for his dog Maggie, whom he rescued alongside his former wife Ruth Langsford. The ex-couple adopted the pooch from Dogs Trust charity 15 years ago, and since then, fans have seen her grow through various social media posts.

Following their separation last year, Maggie has stayed with Ruth at their former family home in Surrey.

Speaking about their four-legged friend, Eamonn said that while their connection remains strong, his mobility struggles have got in the way of caring for Maggie.

“There’s only one word I’d use and that’s love,” he said of their bond. “She changed me, changed my life and changed my perception towards people.

“I am now disabled. I’m in a wheelchair. I’ve not been able to walk for two years, and this has affected my relationship with Maggie for the worse.

“Obviously the dog is low down in the ground so I can’t bend down. I can’t lift her up. I can’t take her on walks.”

Chatting to The Times, Eamonn confirmed that Ruth is Maggie’s main carer, though noted that their dog “still recognises” him.

“Although I can’t do what I want to do with her, my relationship with her supersedes that,” he continued.

Eamonn, 65, went on to describe his affection for Maggie as “pure” and “unadulterated”, something he claims he’s never felt before.

“[It’s] love that I’ve often looked for in human beings, and suddenly you’re getting it back, this unconditional love. There’s just an empathy,” he concluded.

Eamonn and Ruth announced their split in May last year, after 14 years of marriage. The GB News presenter has since found love again with Katie Alexander, 43, a relationship counsellor, while Ruth remains single for the time being.

In addition to Maggie, they have a 23-year-old son named Jack, and Eamonn also has three other children from his first marriage.

Opening up about their separation for the first time in February, Ruth told Woman and Home Magazine: “I’m quite fine being on my own, but not forever.

“Relationship breakdowns are very difficult, but you deal with it and have to move on. You can let yourself crumble or you pick yourself up and get on with life. It’s a choice.”

Ruth went on to say that she wasn’t “delighted” about their marriage ending, but had come to terms with the situation.

Previously discussing their shared love for Maggie in a joint interview, Eamonn made a cryptic joke about Ruth loving their pet dog more than him.

He told The Telegraph: “If my wife loved me the way my dog loves me, I’d be a very happy man.”

Ruth chimed in: “We love her so much. You come home and you’ve had a tough day, a long day, whatever, and I see her and she sees me, or Eamonn, and you see her tail going, and then she runs off, and I know it’s because she’s getting a toy from her basket to bring you.
