US memo allows federal employees to evangelise colleagues at work

According to a recent directive from the US Office of Personnel Management, federal employees can try to persuade their colleagues to follow their religion.

In a memo sent on Monday from agency head Scott Kuper, the policy is defended as being a part of President Donald Trump’s most recent effort to protect religious freedom, using the phrase “constitutionally protected freedom from religious discrimination.”

The Trump administration has been accused of following laws that undermine the separation of church and state while elevating Christianity over other faiths.

The memo goes one step further by stating that employees may engage in “attempting to persuade others of the correctness of their own religious views” as long as “these efforts are not harassing in nature, which is not the memo’s description.”

That might also include encouraging coworkers to pray “to the same extent as they would be permitted to encourage coworkers to engage in other personal activities.”

According to the directive, “the constitutional rights of supervisors to engage in such conversations should not be distinguished from those of non-supervisory employees by the nature of their supervisory responsibilities,” while adding that employees are not held accountable for declining to participate in the conversation.

The memo also lists acceptable behavior for federal employees who interact with the public, noting that statements made to the public “in accordance with their official duties” are not always protected by the US Constitution. Additionally, the memo states that religious expression should not be “limited by the venue or hearer.”

For instance, the memo stated that a doctor at a Veterans Affairs hospital “may pray over his patient for recovery” or that a national park ranger leading a public tour “may join her tour group in prayer.”

The Trump administration has pledged to fight back against repeated accusations of assault on religious freedom in the country.

Trump set up a “Task Force to Eradicate Anti-Christian Bias” in February through executive action.

He established the “Religious Liberty Commission” in May, and he later released a fact sheet that only made direct references to Christianity despite promising to advance “America’s peaceful religious pluralism.”

Trump questioned whether religion and government should remain separate at the time during a Rose Garden event at the time.

“Separation,” you ask? Is that beneficial or detrimental? Trump stated at the time. “I’m not sure”.

Lioness heroes swap kit colours for chic black and cream suits at Downing Street visit

For their celebratory reception at Number 10 with Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner and sports minister Stephanie Peacock, the English heroes donned chic cream and black suits.

The Lionesses have a stylish arrival at Downing Street. After winning their second European Women’s Championship title, the triumphant England team posed outside Number 10 before arriving home for a celebratory reception.

The nation’s footballing heroes wore matching cream and black suits to the celebration with Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner and sports minister Stephanie Peacock after dressing up in tracksuits and football kits for the past few weeks.

Number 10 was decorated for the occasion with St. George’s flags draped over the windows and bunting along the railings just before 7 p.m.

With a 3-1 penalty shootout victory over Spain in the tournament’s main event on Sunday in Basel, the Lionesses successfully defend their European crown.

After drawing 1-1 following extra time, the entertaining final came down to penalties, which Alessia Russo then turned to for Mariona Caldentey to win the opener.

Before Chloe Kelly scored from the spot to keep England’s European title, Hannah Hampton made two incredible saves in the shootout.

Following their Euro 2025 victory over Spain, the England women’s football team was met by enthralling crowds on their return home on Monday.

As the squad’s plane touched down shortly after 15:30 BST, hundreds of fans gathered outside Southend Airport wearing England flags and gear.

The Lionesses then traveled by coach to Downing Street to attend Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner’s reception. The players had a signed England shirt for them to enjoy in No 10’s garden with canapes and drinks.

In the Euro 2025 final on Sunday in Basel, England won 3-1 on penalties to defend their European title.

Following two saves from Hannah Hampton’s goalkeeper, Chloe Kelly scored the winning spot kick, helping the squad become the first English team to win a major tournament on international soil.

The most watched television moment of the year so far was when more than 16 million people watched the game live on television.

The Lionesses boarded an aircraft with an England badge and the word “Home” on its side and arrived at Southend Airport.

Before the reception, Rayner declared, “Our Lionesses are absolute champions, and they proved that again last night.”

Leah Williamson, the captain of the Euro 2025 team, walked down the flight’s stairs to join head coach Sarina Wiegman as the first person to leave the aircraft.

The entire squad posed for a photo in front of the aircraft before heading down the tarmac, wearing tracksuits and their winning medal.

The players then walked to their coaches in front of a crowd of fans about an hour later, now dressed in England’s official tailored clothing line.

Williamson passed the supporters while passing the trophy once more.

Just before 19:00, the Lionesses and their support staff made the reception at Downing Street.

The Lionesses received the Royal Family’s “warmest appreciation and admiration,” according to King Charles III, who also paid tribute. “The next task is to bring the World Cup home in 2027 if you can.

Officials are reportedly looking into having a reception at Windsor Castle or Buckingham Palace in the fall.

The prime minister’s spokesman stressed that nominations were subject to an independent process, even when questioned about calls for the team to be honored with honors.

Following the victory, Downing Street also refrained from calling for an additional bank holiday, with a spokesman saying, “If we had a bank holiday every time the Lionesses win, we would never go to work.”

Calls for a bank holiday following a significant football success are not new, but none were made after the Lionesses won the Euros in 2022 and the England men’s team won the World Cup in 1966. Due to the negative effects they have on economic output, governments have been reluctant to take additional public holidays.

However, the Royal Mail has made it known that a special postmark will be applied to all UK stamped mail from Monday through Friday to honor England’s victory.

Lewis Capaldi has revealed his drummer was left in tears after he made his sensational return to Glastonbury. The chart-topping singer, 28, performed a secret set at Worthy Farm this year, which came two years on from him struggling with Tourettes at the festival.

He made a huge comeback for a 35-minute show on the iconic Pyramid Stage, marking his return to performing after a two year break. Lewis confessed he had planned to quit music all together despite his huge success after his show at Glastonbury in 2023.

In a change of heart, Lewis agreed to head back to the world famous festival and despite it being a secret set, he told his fans in advance as he was worried nobody would turn up.

On the Apple Music Music Music That Soothes Me series, he confessed, “I’m not great at keeping secrets; I wanted it to be a surprise, but we had to start leaking it out a few weeks before because it would have been strange to come out in an empty field.”

It was the worst-kept secret by that weekend. I adored every second of it, which was unquestionably the best day of my life. Lewis explained how deeply the moment affected him, saying, “Almost immediately, I was overcome with emotion and I started well up, so I was like, get it together,” but then I turned around and looked at my drummer, and he was in a coma of tears.

“It was weird, I knew it was going to be fine this time around. I had nerves and butterflies, but it wasn’t the same as 2023 when I was so stressed and I knew something bad was going to happen. It was spectacular.”

Lewis performed his new song Survive while performing it on the famed stage. The singer urges fans to receive the same kind of support he had on his path to recovery in the deeply personal track about his mental health struggles and recovery.

Lewis remarked about his performance on the 2023 Pyramid Stage, “I was completely on autopilot.” I watch it again, and I’m depressed. I wasn’t indulging anything.

He thanked those who assisted him throughout the process, saying that it “made it much less embarrassing.” Lewis continued, “I feel the worst because of what I wanted to do most.” It resembled an odd combination of emotions.

He continued, saying that while others might consider the video’s portrayal of the day as encouraging and that he actually experienced the moment in his life as “the worst moment of his life”

Lewis explained in the video of the conversation with BetterHelp that he felt “done indefinitely” with the music industry.

He said, “I took a break because I needed a break and to sort of like release the pressure valve a little bit. I didn’t take a break to just focus on getting better.”

Lewis continued, “The therapy has been a major reason why I’m able to be a musician once more.” To provide the support I needed, this seems like such a good thing.

Why Sudan’s RSF chose this parallel government ahead of peace talks

A parallel “transitional peace” government to Sudan’s port-based government was unveiled by the Tasis Alliance, a coalition of Sudanese armed groups formed in February.

The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N), a powerful armed group that controls large portions of South Sudan’s South Kordofan and Blue Nile states, collaborated to create Tasis.

For 40 years, SPLM-N has been fighting a rebellion against the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), a conflict rooted in brutal land grabs by ruling elites.

Although the RSF and SAF were former allies, a power conflict led to a total civil war in April 2023.

After more than two years of fighting, Tasis wants to challenge SAF for legitimacy and power, according to analysts.

Anette Hoffmann, a researcher on Sudan at the Dutch Clingendale Institute, described the Tasis government as “the RSF’s most recent desperate attempt to rebrand itself as a state authority rather than a militia.

“But every single one of their actions has shown otherwise.” RSF forces and their allies were besieging entire state capitals and starving innocent civilians, she told Al Jazeera as they announced their government.

Tasis wants to be a state representative.

Just three days before a new round of peace talks in the United States is scheduled to start on July 29th, Tasis officially announced its new government.

Representatives from the Sudan Quartet, including those from Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States, will attend the discussions. According to Africa Intelligence, neither the SAF nor the RSF will be included in this round.

Despite the RSF’s long-standing reservations about being excluded from the power and influence in a post-war Sudan due to a lack of international legitimacy, the organization has long been wary of being treated as merely an “armed group” in ceasefire negotiations.

The Tasis Alliance hopes to win support from some friendly states and strengthen its bargaining position in upcoming negotiations, according to Kholood Khair, the founder of the Confluence Advisory think-tank and an expert on Sudan.

Khair told Al Jazeera, “What’s interesting is that these new talks have sparked a fury across Sudan and sparked the formation of these two governments,” despite how little information has been made about them.

She continued, adding that the army used a similar tactic to appoint Kamel Idris as prime minister in Port Sudan, a crucial city on the Red Sea Coast, in May.

Just one day after Tasis announced its parallel administration, Idris recently appointed five new ministers to bolster his new administration.

The RSF-backed government is led by a council of military saviors and civilian loyalists, just like Port Sudan.

The presidency of the Tasis has 15 members, led by Mohamed Hamdan “Hemedti” Dagalo, the RSF’s leader. Abdelaziz al-Hilu, the leader of SPLM-N, is his deputy.

RSF-aligned armed commanders and civil servants reportedly received 47% of the new administration’s posts, compared to SPLM-N, which received roughly a third.

As previously reported by Al Jazeera, smaller armed groups and political parties who advantageously joined Tasis to increase their relevance received the rest. &nbsp,

Suleiman Sandal, a rebel group that emerged from the Darfur wars and splitted in the current war, was appointed interior minister.

Al-Tahir Hajar is a well-known member of the Tasis leadership council, along with the Sudan Liberation Forces Gathering (SLFG), which emerged from the Darfur wars.

Mohamed Hassan al-Ta’aishi, a politician from Darfur and former head of Sudan’s transitional Sovereign Council, is the Tasis government’s prime minister. He is a member of the country’s ruling coalition.

Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Hemedti, the SAF’s head of the Sovereign Council. The two planned to retake control of the 2021 presidential election, but they plotted a coup to overthrow the then-civil government and stifle hopes for democracy.

Cementing the rift&nbsp

The former has ruled the east and center of the nation since the SAF took control of Khartoum from the RSF in March, while the latter has made an effort to retake control of the west and southern regions.

According to Alan Boswell, an expert on Sudan with the International Crisis Group, the Tasis government may have ended up cementing that division more than enabling it to gain a competitive edge at the negotiation table.

He claimed that the RSF wants to be a legitimate national actor. Even if that is not the government’s strategic goal, “yes,]this government] makes de facto partition all the more likely.”

Khair added that the establishment of a second government encourages armed groups to rise to power in exchange for positions in one of the two governments.

She claimed that “this new government really encourages the growth of various armed groups.” In a wartime conflict, “more armed groups will mobilize to win a position in one of the two governments.”

‘You Need To Win World Cup,’ Remi Tinubu Charges Super Falcons

Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the president’s wife, has urged Nigeria’s Super Falcons to aim for the FIFA Women’s World Cup title rather than the continent.

Following their victory in the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), Mrs. Tinubu addressed the team at a reception hosted by President Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja on Monday.

Mrs. Tinubu remarked, “I told the president this morning that you needed to win the World Cup, and he thought I was too ambitious,” and that was exactly what the players were laughing at.

Let this serve as a launching pad for even greater success, champions! I have faith in you, just like Nigeria did. You are leading the charge in the field of women’s football, she continued.

She praised the team’s resilience and teamwork as inspirational and praised their accomplishments.

“Our fantastic team, who has once more made Nigerians proud, has made you and your family proud. Your victory at the Moroccan Women’s African Cup of Nations in 2024 was more than just a win. It also served as a reaffirmation of your resilience, teamwork, and resolve.

You played with ferocity, conviction, and unwavering belief in yourself that it won’t end until it is. You displayed nothing but inspirational energy during the pitch; I commend you on it. You never wavered, and you’ve kept Nigeria’s position as a top player in Africa’s women’s game alive.

Mrs. Tinubu referred to the players as role models who had taught young girls in Nigeria and other parts of Africa that greatness can be achieved with perseverance and hard work.

I extend my gratitude to the National Sports Commission, the Nigerian Football Federation, the technical team, and all the coaches. I also extend my sincere gratitude to the passionate Nigerian fans and the Super Falcons’ families for their unwavering support. We all have this victory, she continued.

The First Lady thanked Tinubu, the president, for his unwavering support for sports development.

President Bola Tinubu and the Super Falcons are seen in a file photo.

The President, in his remarks, gave the winning team numerous awards and gave them generous rewards.

He said, “I hereby grant the players and the 11-man technical team the national honor of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) in the name of a grateful nation.”

Additionally, I hereby direct the players and technical team members to each receive a three-bedroom apartment.

Additionally, the 24 players will receive the equivalent of $100, 000 each, and the 11-member technical team will receive the same amount.

I congratulate you once more and will keep praying for you. Nigeria’s spirit is unwavering and will never end as a result of this.
