AIG Women’s Open

Date: 31 July – 3 August 2018 at Royal Porthcawl, Wales

In the men’s Open Championship’s opening round, Darcey Harry cheered on boyfriend Jacob Skov Olesen, who shared the lead after round one.

Olesen will play a supporting role for Harry, the rising Welsh golf star, in her Royal Porthcawl debut at the AIG Women’s Open this week.

Olesen won’t, however, support Harry, who is 22 from behind the ropes.

The Dane has become a caddy for his partner since the LET rookie won the Hulencourt Women’s Open in June and is now doing the same.

My boyfriend had an off-week in Belgium that week, so I said, “Ooh you can come and push my bag,” Harry says. “Originally, I was going to caddie for myself for a little while.

We won the first time he caddied for me, so we had to share that with him.

As Harry completes her first major at her young career this week at the course she calls home, Olesen’s presence is anticipated to help her succeed even more.

Olesen, who completed qualifying school, is currently touring in his rookie year.

He won the Open and shot 67 on the opening day to take the lead in the standings.

Olesen made the cut in what was only the 26-year-old’s second major of his career despite losing in round two. He finished 68th, which was a respectable return.

Harry, who debuted at the Evian Championship earlier this month, is now getting ready for her second major performance.

In her first competitive match against the best players women’s golf has to offer, she missed the cut in France.

After finishing tied for 38th at last week’s Scottish Open, Harry returned home feeling upbeat after arousing performance there.

“I’m so excited,” says Harry.

knowing the route and “where not go”

Olesen’s schedule sat him in the carry-on of Harry’s bag in Belgium after a final round of 68 saw her win by three shots and earn her place in Porthcawl in the process.

The Harry-Olesen pairing won the Czech Ladies Open the following week, placing Harry in the tie-fourth place place.

Harry claims that because of their collaboration, Olesen’s “knowledge of all shots has given her” such an advantage.

She will need little assistance in figuring out her way around the course, at least this week.

Harry has played the links hundreds of times and has been a member since joining Royal Porthcawl when she was in her mid-twenties.

She says, “I wouldn’t say there will be a huge advantage, but I will know some of the rules and where not to go.”

“A lot of concentration and a lot of nerves,”

Harry has never performed in Royal Porthcawl, which has fairways and greens lined with the crowds that are expected to line the south of Wales this week.

There are high hopes for Harry given her impressive start to life on the LET, and Welsh golfers are desperate for some success in either the women’s or men’s matches.

Harry, Wales’ 221st golf player, will stay at home in Dinas Powys this week and anticipates “some food cooked by my parents and having all of my washing done.”

Harry says focus will be key to her chances of succeeding in the competition, despite her intentions to “give a wave” to the numerous friends and family members who are likely to be in the galleries this week.

I must treat it like it should every other week, make an effort to be in my own zone, and steer clear of distractions, Harry says.

There will be a lot of nerves, because of course there will be a lot of concentration.

Lakers’ Luka Doncic shows offseason fitness gains in Men’s Health

Luka Doncic has been putting together yet another surprise this offseason after receiving a lot of attention for his fitness following his shocking trade to the Los Angeles Lakers in February.

A profile in Men’s Health magazine revealed the extent to which Doncic has gone to gain a slimmer appearance as he gears up for his first full season in Los Angeles after reports of an improved physique surfaced earlier this summer.

Although opinions on the weight have varied, Doncic, 26, is typically rated at 230 pounds (1.98 meters). He continued to contribute 28.2 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 7.7 assists last season despite this restriction.

However, reports suggested Doncic’s lack of fitness had caused the Dallas Mavericks to become angry, which might have contributed to a calf injury that the star guard had been rehabbing for a month prior to the shock trade that shocked the NBA.

Although he still managed at least 61 games in a season before being reduced to 50 last year, combining the Mavericks and Lakers’ games, injuries have sometimes slowed Doncic down in his career due to ankle, calf, knee, and back issues.

Now that Doncic has a better diet and a fitness regimen, she can clearly look slimmer. He has been avoiding gluten and limiting his intake of sugar to a minimum to help him perform numerous daily exercises, including lifting weights and performing on-court drills.

Doncic advised Men’s Health to “be the best that I can be.” “Be the best that you can be,” Doncic said. I believe we made a significant step this year with my team. You are aware that this is just the start. I must continue. Can’t stop”.

LeBron James, a fellow NBA superstar, signed a contract extension with the Lakers in 2025-26, but the team also signed guard Marcus Smart, center Deandre Ayton, and forward Jake LaRavia.

Although the profile did not specifically mention Doncic’s weight at the time, photos revealed his slimmer frame and increased muscle definition in his arms. His initial basketball absence was followed by a return to the court in June as a result of his workouts. In August, he will represent Slovenia in EuroBasket.

He continued, “Every summer, I try my best to work on different things.” I’m obviously very competitive. You know, this summer was a little bit different. It kind of spurred me on to improve.

How personal tragedy motivates India seamer Deep

Why didn’t you instruct Siraj to bowl outside the off-shelf to take five wickets?

After the first innings of the second England vs. India Test, Bengal team-mate Shreevats Goswami jokingly asked Akash Deep to say that.

We must do that, Deep replied, “No, no, whatever the team requires.”

The right-arm pacer, who had only played seven Test matches before, finished with a five-wicket haul in the second innings, helping India clinch a remarkable victory.

He claimed that he believed that the wealthy could play cricket.

Although Deep’s story extends far beyond Edgbaston, his name only came to prominence in cricket circles after taking 10 wickets.

Akash was raised playing cricket in one of India’s most economically troubled states and was raised in a small village. His first believing friend was Vaibhav Kumar, who was his childhood friend.

“Cricket wasn’t very well-liked in Bihar at the time,” he said. Only 20 to 25 people, according to Vaibhav, were playing leather-ball cricket in our entire district.

Akash typically used a tennis ball, but whenever we brought him with us to play leather-ball, he would always assist us in winning. However, Akash believed that the wealthy could only play cricket.

After closely observing professional players, Vaibhav, a cricketer himself, became convinced of Deep’s talent.

“We visited Jamshedpur, where some RAW and IPL players were exhibiting in an academy.” He recalls saying, “Akash is faster and better than them when I saw them bowling.”

The coaches there were impressed as well when I asked them to look him in the eye. If not for India, Akash could definitely play the IPL as long as he puts in the effort.

However, tragedy struck before Deep was ready to give it all up. His older brother came along just six months after his father passed away.

Cricket was put on hold because there was no family’s primary breadwinner.

After saving some money from farming, he decided to buy a dumper on partnership and use it to support himself. Vaibhav claims that his mother also received half of her late husband’s salary, which helped the family survive.

Deep retired from cricket after almost three years, but his enthusiasm never materialized. He made the decision to relocating to Bengal because he wanted to pursue his dream.

We decided to rent a flat there after my father was posted there. I went to various clubs and asked them if Akash should be played, but they laughed at me,” says Vaibhav.

He “had to have faith in himself,” he said.

The turning point was that. Deep was soon spotted playing in Bengal’s domestic scene.

He was “on the fringes,” he said. However, it was obvious that he had a remarkable talent. He had a lot of strength, a quick move, and a natural swinging ability. So we recruited him, according to Bengal’s current coach Arun Lal, an ex-Iranian cricketer, and he did a fantastic job.

“I’m rather disappointed that it took him so long for his resume to become so well-known on the international stage.”

Talent alone, however, was insufficient. Arun had to alter Akash’s perspective.

He “understood himself.” So the goal was to “work on” him rather than “try him out” and “get him to believe in himself,” says Arun.

He eventually made the IPL and the Test squad of India with his domestic performances before moving on to the next level. In the opening match of 2024, Deep took three wickets for England in his international debut.

His fortunes appeared to have finally changed. However, the situation was getting worse.

“His sister’s cancer diagnosis was made. He put his phone off because he was extremely stressed. Since he already had lost both of his parents, he was feeling mentally ill. She is now, thankfully, okay,” says Vaibhav.

Later, Deep dedicated his Edgbaston performance to his sister.

“She had a picture and thought in my head every time I picked up the ball.” She deserves this performance. Sis, we are all with you, I tell her.

After Edgbaston, Deep struggled at Lord’s and missed the Old Trafford Test with an injury, but his absence was felt by his replacement, Anshul Kamboj, who struggled to adjust to English conditions.

Message in a bottle found in Ireland prompts theories about Taiwanese crew

Hopes for finding answers to the disappearance of a Taiwanese fishing crew disappeared four years ago have rekindled after a message found in a bottle off the west coast of Ireland.

The Yong Yu Sing No 18, a Taiwanese fishing vessel that was found adrift with its crew missing in 2021, is alleged to be a SOS message written in a combination of Chinese, Indonesian, and English.

The handwritten note was discovered last week by Matthew Long and a friend while they were walking on a beach on Inisheer, a small island about 8 kilometers (5 miles) off County Clare.

Long told Al Jazeera, “We used Google Translate, and the first portion of the message was translated into Indonesian as an SOS message.”

Long claimed to have handed the note to the local police before disclosing it on the social media platform Reddit, where scheming was quickly carried out to find out where it came from.

It blew up when we posted it in r/beachcombing, where it was discovered by savvy Redditors, according to Long, who posted it online in a few places.

The Reddit posting reads, “Please send help! We are lost since 12/20. We are three people in this place. The island’s name is unknown to us. We are harmed. HELP . . . . . SOS”.

The title “Yong Yu Sing No 18” and the Chinese character “Li” are at the end of the note.

The Irish police service, An Garda Sochána, confirmed it had received a “report of an item found” on Inisheer last Saturday, but stated it does not comment on third-party content online.

It declined to provide more details.

According to Taiwan’s Central News Agency, the ship’s owner lost communication with its captain, a man by the name of Li, two days prior. The Yong Yu Sing No 18 went missing on January 1, 2021.

The fishing boat’s crew and lifeboat were missing, and they later were found about 600 kilometers (373 miles) away from Midway Atoll, an unincorporated United States territory in the North Pacific Ocean.

Taiwanese prosecutors later determined the incident to be an accident, but Li and his nine Indonesian crew’s fate is still unknown.

The Taiwan Yilan District Prosecutors Office, which conducted the case in 2021, did not respond to a request for comment right away.

Nearly 10,000 users have commented on Long’s Reddit post, many of whom have theories about the crew’s fate and debating whether the note is genuine or fake.

The Su’Ao Fisherman’s Association and other organizations have taken the note seriously in Taiwan by those who support the families of the missing crew.

The association expressed hope that the government would follow through with the necessary channels and that, if the situation was confirmed to be true, it would work with international organizations to coordinate rescue efforts, according to a statement from the association to the local media.

The Su’Ao Fisherman’s Association did not respond to Al Jazeera’s request for comment right away.

The authenticity of the note has also been debatted by internet users on Taiwan’s PTT message board.

Some have compared it to a 1992 accident where a shipment of 28, 000 plastic ducks and bath toys slammed into a cargo ship during a storm.

The ducks have been washed up all over the world, including Scotland, in the decades since the incident.

Long claimed he doesn’t know whether the note is real but that it is.

He said, “I don’t know whether the note was actually sent by the crew of that ship” or whether it was genuine.

How England’s Lionesses won the UEFA Euro 2025 title

Lucy Bronze, a Lioness defender, stood obstinately in front of the goal while holding hands on her head and disbelief dominated her thoughts. Spain, the tournament’s favorite, defeated England 1-0 in the final of the Women’s Euro 2025 tournament, and their team was a chaotic mess.

It was a circumstance that was too well-known.

England’s players were staring at the scoreboard without any answers for the third time in a row. The roaring Lionesses had been silenced by a 25th-minute header from Mariona Caldentey, the final touch to a blistering Spanish move down the right channel.

The England fans everywhere screamed “Not again,” from the thousands of people gathered in Basel’s St Jakob-Park in Switzerland to the millions of people watching nervously return home. They had previously witnessed this depressing story: An England-centric English heart was crushed by a first-half Spain goal in the 2023 FIFA World Cup final in Sydney, Australia.

However, England had to write the ending this time.

The Lionesses, who lived up to their title of tournament comeback queens, reclaimed the title with Alessia Russo’s equalizer in extra time, forcing the reigning champions back into contention.

La Roja‘s statistics were heavily in the hands of the first two hours of football, but despite their skill and swagger, England’s grit and determination kept them alive.

After riding a rollercoaster of emotions on the touchline as her side defeated Spain 3-1 on penalties, England coach Sarina Wiegman declared to the BBC, “Football is chaos.”

Chloe Kelly triumphantly slammed her fist in the air after her signature prancing run-up. The Spaniards called the event “remontada,” or “remontada” as they called it.

The calm, focused Kelly, who also set up Russo’s header, once more represented England’s triumphant side, just as she did three years ago at Euro 2022 at Wembley.

The 27-year-old flashed a smile as she proudly held up the coveted gold medal hanging around her neck, noting that “the first time was so nice, we had to do it twice.”

Super-subs steal the show, in a word.

A fitting nod to England’s Euro 2025 campaign was Sunday’s comeback victory: thrilling, chaotic, and entertaining.

Their ability to survive, adapt, and strike when it mattered most shaped their championship career for a team that led for just under five minutes in the knockout stages.

They did so, writing one of the greatest plays in English football history, a feat only rivaled by the 1966 men’s World Cup victory at home.

“The pitch has been the most chaotic tournament ever… ” It was chaos right away, according to Dutchwoman Wiegman, who has since won three Euro titles.

It’s incredible to lose your first game and win the European Championship.

Indeed, England’s title defense began with a 2-1 defeat to France, casting doubts on their standing as real contenders. However, their resounding victories, including a 4-0 victory over the powerful Netherlands and a 6-1 victory over their neighbor, Wales, kept the ship moving until the end.

However, the storm arrived just in time, bringing with it the ultimate test of England’s resolve at the tournament’s business end. The team was forced to the brink by the quarterfinals and semifinals, which required the players’ greatest concentration during the tense late-game moments. Wiegman’s tactical prowess and squad depth proved crucial in every situation for them.

Teen sensation Michelle Agyemang’s superb equaliser against Sweden saved England from two goals down to win 3-2 on penalties.

The 19-year-old reserve player, whose last name appropriately refers to the “saviour of the nation,” once more showed up in the moment when it was most needed, this time scoring a stoppage-time equalizer to send the game into extra time against Italy.

In the final moments of extra time, Kelly, the super-sub, completed the job by turning in the rebound from a missed penalty.

The English interchange players had the best of impact at the game. They scored 10 goals, which is the most goals ever scored in a single tournament since 2013, twice the total of any other team.

England's Michelle Agyemang poses with the
Michelle Agyemang, 19, was chosen as the best young player of Euro 2025 playing in her first major tournament.

The saying goes, “Tough times don’t go on.”

Prior to a loan move to Arsenal, Kelly struggled for minutes at Manchester City and was unsure of her place in the Euro 2025.

A Champions League final was won right where it was, and a Euros final is now won by Kelly, who has a habit of changing games whenever it matters most.

“Tough times don’t last,” is a phrase to use when telling someone, or perhaps experiencing something similar.

Hannah Hampton, a goalkeeper, rose above hardship to become one of England’s most impactful players at the European Championships, just like Kelly.

The 24-year-old, who is playing her first major tournament and filling Mary Earps’ shoes, pulled off two incredible saves in the quarterfinals with a bloody nose before evicting two more crucial goal attempts in the final, including one from Aitana Bonmati, who many football commentators consider to be the best player in the world.

Hampton defied the odds, winning the player of the match award in the final, having been born with a serious eye condition that still affects her depth perception despite numerous surgeries.

Wiegman praised Hampton, saying, “I think she’s done amazing. To stop those penalties in the Euros final and to win it feels a little like a fairytale.

Wiegman and the Lionesses are now back on their home turf after being able to survive the storm in Switzerland. The message is no longer, “It’s coming home,” as they ride through roaring crowds in their open-top bus parade across London on Tuesday. It will remain there this time.
