Six months prior to his fight with Galal Yafai in Birmingham, Francisco Rodriguez Jr. failed a drug test in America in December.
The British boxer’s first professional defeat came when Rodriguez, 31, defeated Yafai in a points decision in June.
Rodriguez tested positive for the banned substance heptaminol following the match, and the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBBofC) and UK Anti-Doping (UAD) are now looking into the Mexican.
The Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (Vada) conducted the test as part of the WBC’s Clean Boxing Program on fight night.
Rodriguez has now admitted to having failed a drug test twice in the last six months.
After failing a post-fight drug test, Rodriguez’ victory over Josue Jesus Morales on December 15 in San Antonio was declared a no-contest by the Texas Commission.
The Texas Combative Sports Program reported that “Francisco Rodriguez failed his drug test on December 12, 24 and received a 90-day suspension and a $500 administrative penalty.”
The Texas Commission is not required to notify other commissions of the decision because there is no world-governing body for boxing.
Rodriguez’s suspension was acknowledged by the British Boxing Board of Control as a “rules violation,” according to the commission.
The British Boxing Board of Control has been requested by BBC Sport for comment.
Yafai v. Rodriguez was for the sanctioning body’s interim flyweight title, and any fighter in the top 15 of the WBC’s rankings must register for drug testing.

Rodriguez was cleared of intentionally doping by the WBC on Saturday, claiming that a prescription energy booster caused the positive test.
The WBC now mandates an immediate rematch between Rodriguez and Yafai because they no longer believe in the Yafai fight.

Donald Trump has been accused of taking another swipe at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle – this time on his trip to Scotland.
The US president has been visiting his golf courses in both Ayrshire and Aberdeenshire over the last few days – and also holding talks with the Prime Minister, Keir Starmer. The pair took part in a joint press conference, where Trump fielded questions on a range of topics as the PM watched on. At one point in the proceedings, Trump began to talk about his love of the Royal Family, with King Charles set to host him on a state visit in the coming weeks.

He added, “Being with Charles, Camilla, and everyone in between, I’ve got to know a lot of the family.” They are excellent individuals. They are incredibly talented people.
He continued, “And in that regard, I think the UK is very lucky, you could have people who weren’t great people.” You might have people who weren’t there, but I’m not sure if I can say that.
And according to some on social media, Trump’s words were “calling out” Harry and Meghan, with Trump claiming to not like the Sussexes.
Since Meghan and Harry abruptly resigned as royals and moved to the United States more than four years ago, Trump has berated Harry.
Trump and Meghan have engaged in verbal altercation.
