Can Trump strip Musk and Mamdani of their US citizenship?

US President Donald Trump and officials from his administration have hinted that they might consider revoking the US citizenship of Zohran Mamdani, New York City’s Democratic mayoral candidate.

Separately, Trump said former aide Elon Musk would have to “close up shop and head back home to South Africa” amid a row over his tax breaks and Trump’s narrowly passed spending bill.

But would the Trump administration have the power to revoke the citizenship of Mamdani and Musk, both foreign-born, naturalised citizens of the US?

What is the immigration status of Mamdani and Musk?

Mamdani, 33, was born in the Ugandan capital, Kampala, to ethnically Indian parents. He moved to New York at the age of seven and became a naturalised US citizen in 2018.

Musk was born in 1971 in Pretoria, South Africa to a Canadian mother and South African father. At the age of 17, he moved to Canada of where he is also a citizen. In 1992, he moved to the US to study at the University of Pennsylvania. He became a naturalised US citizen in 2002, according to a biography of him written in 2023 by journalist Walter Isaacson.

In October 2024, the Washington Post reported that Musk began his career in the US without the proper work authorisation, but Musk has denied this. “I was in fact allowed to work in the US,” Musk wrote in an X post on the same day the report was published. “I was on a J-1 visa that transitioned to an H1-B,” Musk wrote in another post. A J-1 visa is a temporary visa for foreign students, while an H-1B is a temporary work visa.

To become naturalised as a US citizen, an individual needs to be above the age of 18 and to have lived continuously in the US as a green card holder for five years, or three years if they are married to a US citizen.

What has the Trump administration said about Mamdani?

Andy Ogles, a Republican Tennessee representative, wrote to Attorney General Pam Bondi on June 26, asking for the Department of Justice to probe whether Mamdani, who identifies as a democratic socialist, should be subject to denaturalisation proceedings.

Posting a copy of the letter to Bondi on his X page, Ogles wrote: “Zohran ‘little muhammad’ Mamdani is an antisemitic, socialist, communist who will destroy the great City of New York. He needs to be DEPORTED. Which is why I am calling for him to be subject to denaturalization proceedings. ”

Ogles said that the investigation should be conducted on the grounds that Mamdani may have procured US citizenship through “willful misrepresentation or concealment of material support for terrorism. ”

The Tennessee Republican cited reports, including an article published in the New York Post, stating that Mamdani expressed solidarity with “individuals convicted of terrorism-related offenses prior to becoming a US citizen. ” Ogles said that Mamdani rapped “Free the Holy Land Five / My guys. ”

“The Holy Land Foundation was convicted in 2008 for providing material support to Hamas, a designated foreign terrorist organization. Publicly praising the Foundation’s convicted leadership as ‘my guys’ raises serious concerns about whether Mr. Mamdani held affiliations or sympathies he failed to disclose during the naturalization process,” Ogles wrote in his letter to Bondi.

“Moreover, Mr. Mamdani has recently refused opportunities to reject the pro-terrorist rallying cry to ‘globalize the intifada’ a call to expand violent attacks on civilians to the United States and around the world,” Ogles wrote.

Mamdani has also pledged to stop masked Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents “from deporting our neighbours”. When Trump was asked about this on Tuesday at a news conference, he said that if Mamdani prevents ICE agents from conducting deportation operations, “Well, then, we’ll have to arrest him. ”

“We don’t need a communist in this country, but if we have one, I’m going to be watching over him very carefully on behalf of the nation,” Trump said, adding, “we’ll send him money, we’ll send him all the things he needs to run the government. ”

Trump continued, citing claims that Mamdani is in the US illegally, saying, “We’re going to look at everything”. The president also voiced support for the current New York mayor, Eric Adams, who is also a member of the Democratic Party.

How has Mamdani responded?

Mamdani posted a statement on his X account in response to Trump’s comments on Tuesday.

“The President of the United States just threatened to have me arrested, stripped of my citizenship, put in a detention camp and deported. Not because I have broken any law but because I will refuse to let ICE terrorize our city,” Mamdani wrote in his statement.

Mamdani also called Trump’s praise of Adams “unsurprising”, adding: “At the very moment when MAGA Republicans are attempting to destroy the social safety net, kick millions of New Yorkers off of healthcare and enrich their billionaire donors at the expense of working families, it is a scandal that Eric Adams echoes this President’s division, distraction and hate. Voters will resoundingly reject it in November. ”

What has the Trump administration said about Elon Musk?

While the billionaire owner of Tesla and SpaceX was once a key aide to Trump and a major donor to his presidential campaign last year, Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” has created a public rift between Trump and Musk.

Musk has repeatedly decried the bill online and has threatened to form a new political party as a response to the bill passing.

Musk stands to be affected by the finance bill that the Senate narrowly passed on Tuesday, as it ends tax credits worth up to $7,500 for purchases of electric vehicles (EVs) from September 30. This could significantly reduce consumer demand for EVs in the US.

In a Truth Social post on Monday, Trump wrote, “Without subsidies, Elon would probably have to close up shop and head back home to South Africa. No more Rocket launches, Satellites, or Electric Car Production, and our Country would save a FORTUNE. ”

“Perhaps we should have DOGE take a good, hard, look at this? BIG MONEY TO BE SAVED! ! ! ” Trump added, in reference to the Department of Government Efficiency, an advisory body aimed at boosting government efficiency and upgrading information technology, that Musk formed and led at the start of Trump’s second administration, before leaving on May 30.

On Tuesday, when reporters asked Trump if he was going to deport Musk, he said, “We’ll have to take a look. We might have to put DOGE on Elon. ”

On what grounds can the US revoke citizenship for naturalised citizens?

Under certain circumstances, US citizens by naturalisation can lose their status as citizens.   This process is also called denaturalisation.

This can happen if naturalised citizens commit certain crimes, including terrorism, war crimes, human rights violations, sex crimes or naturalisation fraud, meaning they obtained their citizenship through fraud, misrepresentation or illegal procurement.

On June 11, the Justice Department issued a memo stating that it would “prioritise denaturalisation” by instituting civil proceedings for people “if they either ‘illegally procured’ naturalization or procured naturalization by ‘concealment of a material fact or by willful misrepresentation’. ”

The memo added: “The Civil Division shall prioritize and maximally pursue denaturalization proceedings in all cases permitted by law and supported by the evidence. ”

A naturalised citizen can also lose their citizenship if they commit an act of treason against the US, or run for public office or join the military of a foreign country.

Most recently, the Justice Department announced on June 13 that UK citizen Elliott Duke, a convicted collector and distributor of child sexual abuse material, had been denaturalised. In a news release, the Justice Department said Duke enlisted in the US Army in 2012 and began receiving and sending child sex abuse material online while serving in Germany. Duke did not list this crime in his naturalisation application in 2013. He was convicted of receipt and possession of child pornography in 2014.

Could either Musk or Mamdani be denaturalised?

It is not likely, according to experts.

“Denaturalisation is limited to cases where the government can prove material fraud in their original applications,” said Michael Kagan, professor of law at University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

“It is rare and unlikely for either Musk or Mamdani. This appears to be irresponsible rhetoric designed to intimidate political opponents. ”

What is the history of denaturalisation in the US?

The US has revoked the citizenship of naturalised citizens on different occasions over the past few decades.

Cases of denaturalisation were more frequent during the first half of the 20th century while the two world wars and, later, the Cold War with the Soviet Union were ongoing. Between 1926 and the mid-1940s, hundreds of people were denaturalised every year, according to political scientist Patrick Weil, author of The Sovereign Citizen, published in 2017.

The US government frequently tried to denaturalise citizens during the two “Red Scare” periods of 1917 to 1920 and 1947 to 1957, when the fear of communism was particularly high in the US. During this time, it was also very hard to obtain US citizenship by naturalisation.

People who were denaturalised at the time included communists and Nazi sympathisers. Two famous cases were:

  • Emma Goldman, an anarchist activist who was born in Lithuania, which was then part of the Russian Empire. Goldman migrated to the US in 1885. When World War I broke out, she opposed US involvement and military conscription. For this, she was jailed in 1917 for two years at the Missouri State Penitentiary in Jefferson City. By the time of her release, the hysteria around communism had taken form in the US and in 1919, she was denaturalised and deported to Soviet Russia.
  • Paul Knauer was born in Germany and arrived in the US in 1925. He became a citizen in 1937. In 1946, Knauer was denaturalised on the grounds that he concealed his affiliation with the German-American Bund, an organisation considered to promote Nazi propaganda.

In 1967, the trend for denaturalisation slowed down when the US Supreme Court ruled that a US citizen could not be involuntarily deprived of their citizenship unless they met the specific criteria of having obtained naturalisation by fraud or of having committed serious offences.

The ruling came at the end of a case involving Beys Afroyim, who was born in Poland and became a naturalised US citizen in 1926. The US government tried to revoke his citizenship because Afroyim had voted in an Israeli legislative election in 1951.

Green Day frontman lets fan play song with him but instantly regrets it

A Green Day concert-goer stole the show after being invited by singer Billie Joe Armstrong to perform Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) – only to leave the frontman fuming

With Oasis gearing up for their first gig in 16 years this Friday (July 4) in Cardiff, one fan couldn’t contain his excitement, even at a Green Day show. Noel and Liam Gallagher buried the hatchet last year and will embark on a world tour over the coming months.

Meanwhile, Green Day, who are currently on a global jaunt of their own, performed in The Netherlands, Belgium, and Greece this week. At each gig on their tour, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong invites a fan to strum the acoustic guitar whilst he sings their 1997 classic, ‘Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)’. A TikTok video captured the moment a young fan was given Armstrong’s guitar during the Luxembourg show on Monday.

After a handshake and a confident start, the fan faltered, prompting Armstrong to question, “What’s wrong? You don’t know any more? “, and then helpfully calling out the chords.

Armstrong, still smiling, encouraged him with “You told me you could play this! ” only for the fan to suddenly and unexpectedly switch to playing ‘Wonderwall’ by Oasis.

The audience erupted into laughter, but Armstrong was less amused as he shook his head in disbelief and reclaimed his guitar.

“Please don’t send him hate guys, it’s just silly, he’s a kid,” TikTok user @ro_cocoa implored after sharing the video. “The Wonderwall of it all. “

Offering an explanation for Armstrong’s apparent frustration, one person explained: “Noel has said in the past that Green Day ripped off Wonderwall so that’s probably why he reacted like that. “

Another joked: “That was the time of his life… He will never get the chance to show Armstrong a great song again. “

A third person added: “He knew he was being cheeky by doing that, he deserves Billie’s reaction. “

While a fourth exclaimed on TikTok: “Billie should have took the joke and started singing. “

The clip later made its way to X, catching the attention of Liam Gallagher himself, with the the Oasis frontman quiping: “Best song of the night. “

Earlier today (July 2), Oasis annouced the forthcoming release of deluxe new formats of their iconic second album (What’s The Story) Morning Glory? – with unplugged versions of five iconic tracks that have previously gone unreleased.

‘We helped turn a jam session with a farting dog into a massive Oasis hit’

Chris and Tony Griffiths had a record contract and successful first album when they first met struggling wannabe rock stars Liam and Noel – taking them under their wing and showing them how to make records and even having a hand in some iconic songs

Liam Gallagher was still at school, and Noel still working in a warehouse as a British Gas sub-contractor, when another pair of Beatles-obsessed brothers, Chris and Tony Griffiths, looked set to hit the big time.

Their band, The Real People, had been signed to Colombia records for three years, and their first, eponymous album, had sold 100,000 copies.

In 1992 the Griffiths were on tour with the Inspiral Carpets – for whom Noel Gallagher also worked as a roadie. It was over Pot Noodles in lunch breaks that Noel told them about his new band with Liam – and asked for their help.

Chris and Tony invited the Gallagher brothers to their home recording studios in Liverpool – but said that before they had even heard their music they knew the duo were going to be stars.

“We had a recording deal at the time and in a better position than they were,” says Chris. “We wanted to help them out as much as they could.

“But it wasn’t about the songs. It was about Liam and his swagger. He had something. I remember the first time we saw him. It was at an end of tour party for Inspiral Carpets. “Our kid (brother Tony) said: ‘Who’s he ? He’s a star. ’ He lit up the room. ”

The four became good friends as they bonded over music. Chris remembers: ““They would come down on a Friday, stay over on our sofas and then go back on Sunday evening ready for work. They’d would come over and get stoned and listen to records. It was all peace and love – and music.

“We spent hours and hours listening to music. They would play us The Buzzcocks and we got them into Slade. We were bang into Slade at the time. They were into the Bee Gees. ”

“We also taught them how to fall out,” he laughs. “We were falling out 3 times a day and we still do. But we still work together now. ”

As Oasis is set to reunite after a falling out that lasted 16 years, with the first of a 41-date run of gigs kicking off in Cardiff on Friday, Chris remember’s going along to their first ever gig, at the Manchester Boardwalk on August 14, 1991.

“There were only a handful of people there, 50 at most. They were first on and Liam came on wearing sunglasses! We started heckling him. They weren’t all great musicians. Guigsy was just getting by on bass and Tony was a standard drummer, but Noel and ‘Bonehead’ were great guitarists, and Liam was always a star.

“But we took someone from Sony Records with us and they weren’t interested. ”

That changed, though, after the Griffiths taught the Gallaghers how to use their recording studio, making a demo cassette of their songs which would eventually catch the eye of the music industry.

Tony remembered the first time Liam tried to record his vocals in their studio. He said: “It was the first time Liam sang with headphones and he wasn’t used to it. Chris would put the head phones on and get Liam to sing along with him. ”

“I have him guide vocals and then we took my vocals out,” adds Chris.

It was out of one jam session that Oasis debut single, Supersonic, emerged. Chris recalls: “We were setting up to record and started jamming and it sounded really good.

“When we started recording Noel played another song. I said: ‘What you were just doing sounds better. ’ We said they should crack on with the new idea. There were no lyrics, no melody, just an idea and by the end of the day it was finished.

“That was the only version they ever recorded. “

The song includes the lines ‘Can I ride with you in your BMW? ‘ and ‘I know a girl called Elsa, she’s into Alka-Seltzer’ . Chris recalls: “Noel sat at the back of the room and wrote about what was going on around him. We had a BMW and Dave Scott (the in-house engineer) had a dog called Elsa that was always farting! It was huge and intimidating – and could not stop farting. ”

Supersonic entered the charts at No 31 and Oasis were on their way.

“We were buzzing for them,” Chris remembers. “We were playing ‘Supersonic’ to everyone we could, saying: ‘Listen to this, they are going to be huge. If it wasn’t for us doing that and recording the demos it wouldn’t happened. ”

Another song they had a hand in was Colombia. The track was on the demo tape which the Gallagher brothers sent to music boss Alan McGee, who signed them on his Creation Records label.

The song, which was including on their debut album Definitely Maybe, would also launch their legendary Knebworth live concerts, three years later in August 1996.

Chris said: “It started out as an instrumental. It was a long psychedelic guitar dirge that went on for five minutes. I said: ‘This needs lyrics. ’

“I came up with the first verse melody and first verse lyrics, Noel came up with the second verse and Liam came up with lyrics. ”

Three decades later, The Real People are still making music, with a new album planned for release next year. They continue to champion new acts, including The Kowloons, fronted by Chris’s son Bobby.

Chris says: I’m still doing music 24/7. We have our own studio and write songs and produce other bands. If I’m not writing or recording I’m doing Beatles covers around Liverpool pubs. ”

Tony said: “We’re proud to have been there to give them the support and the help we did.

“And we are just proud to have been involved with the best album, and the best rock ‘n’ roll band, of the last 30 years. “

King Charles rushes to console teenager as they pass out during visit

King Charles and Queen Camilla carried out a second day of engagements in Scotland today by braving the rain to visit a War Memorial in Kirkcaldy where they were greeted by hundreds of wellwishers

The King consoled a teenage cadet who passed out and needed medical attention on their visit to Scotland. Charles and Queen Camilla clutched their umbrellas as they were greeted by hundreds despite pouring rain today to mark the centenary of the Kirkcaldy War Memorial, in Fife.

They unveiled a commemorative stone Cairn containing school badges caps and USBs with children’s stories acting as a time capsule. The King also laid a wreath at the war memorial and held a minute’s silence. But during the service marking 100 years of Kirkcaldy War Memorial local cadet Robbie McGovern, 13, collapsed and needed medical help.

He was back to full health and as a reward brought to meet the King just before he departed. Charles shook his hand asked: “Did you hit your head? ” Robbie replied ‘no’ but nodded and said “a little bit” when the King asked if he had any ‘buzzing’ in between his ears. Charles replied: “Don’t worry I remember. “

The heavens opened as Charles and Camilla arrived but hundreds lined the path in the memorial garden. Charles unveiled the commemorative Cairn to a round of applause. And Sculptor George Sweeney, 69, said afterwards: “They wanted something special to mark the centenary of the memorial gardens. It took me more than four and half months and it’s made from local sandstone.

“Because of what it represents I feel very proud and an honour and privilege. I hope the King likes it. I hope it gets royal approval. “

Jackson Sergeant, seven, was dressed in a traditional Scottish outfit and waiting with his mum since 5. 30am. He said: “I did get wet but it was worth it to meet the King and Queen. “

Former Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who yesterday was with Prince William at his Homewards event in Sheffield, turned up to speak to Charles about his Multibank initiative that provides essential goods to low-income families.

Meanwhile, as the Princess of Wales talked about the ‘rollercoaster’ of cancer recover, her mother-in-law, Queen Camilla, praised the ‘invaluable’ work of Maggie’s cancer care centres. The Queen, 77, was visiting one of its 24 centres nationwide at Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy, Scotland, in her role as Maggie’s President.

Greeting its inspirational founder and chief executive, Dame Laura Lee, with a warm hug, Her Majesty spoke of how “brilliant” the centres were for patients and their families. There is something so special about them”, she said.

Maggie’s Fife was set up in 2006 with the help of £161million Euromillions lottery winner Christine Harkness, who is now an honorary patron. She met the Queen today, who thanked her profusely for her support.

Diddy’s young daughters seen leaving court as rapper avoids life behind bars

Sean P. Diddy Combs’ twin daughters, D’Lila and Jessie Combs, have been present for much of their dad’s sex trafficking trial, but were reportedly taken out of the courtroom during parts of the testimony

Sean ‘P. Diddy’ Combs’ children were in attendance at the courthouse when he received his verdict in the sex trafficking case. D’Lila and Jessie Combs, the youngest of Diddy’s children to attend the trial, were often spotted in the courtroom but sometimes found the testimony too distressing to sit through.

They were escorted out during particularly explicit segments, which is understandable given they’ve only just finished high school and celebrated their prom amidst the legal drama.

On Wednesday, Diddy was cleared of the most serious accusations levelled against him, including sex trafficking and racketeering, sparing him a potential life sentence – a relief that saw him drop to his knees in court.

Nevertheless, he was convicted on two lesser counts related to transporting individuals for prostitution purposes. Throughout the proceedings, the twins were seen donning coordinated outfits.

On Monday, June 30, they arrived at the Daniel Patrick Moynihan Courthouse wearing identical black trouser suits, accompanied by their sister, Chance.

By Wednesday, July 2, they had chosen more subdued attire, with one in an all-black ensemble and the other in a navy blue jumpsuit. The siblings were holding hands as they walked into the courtroom to hear their father’s fate.

Diddy’s family broke their silence on Wednesday as he was cleared of the most serious charges. When asked how his dad was, Diddy’s son, Christian responded: “Great,” while his daughters added: “Good, happy. “

Diddy faced a total of five charges spread over three federal indictments, encompassing sex trafficking, conspiracy to commit racketeering, and transportation for prostitution.

He entered a plea of not guilty to all charges levelled against him. Furthermore, he strongly refutes any allegations of misconduct, including those brought forward in civil lawsuits. He has now been acquitted of the sex trafficking and racketeering charges but has been found guilty on two counts of transportation for prostitution.

The allegations against him were thrust into the public eye in November 2023 when his former partner, Cassie Ventura, lodged a civil complaint against him.

Despite the former couple resolving the issue out of court, with Diddy not conceding any wrongdoing, her action sparked a flurry of additional lawsuits from across the nation, accusing him of comparable offences which then sparked a police investigation.

During the two-month trial, the court heard how Diddy flew people around the country, including his girlfriends and paid male sex workers, to engage in sexual encounters, a felony violation of the federal Mann Act.

However, he was acquitted of racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking charges, relating to allegations that he forced his former girlfriends into drug-fuelled sex encounters, which had been known as ‘freak offs.’

Rangers sign ‘huge asset’ Rothwell from Bournemouth

Getty Images

Midfielder Joe Rothwell has joined Rangers from Bournemouth on a three-year contract.

The Manchester-born 30-year-old was on loan to Leeds United from the Cherries last season, making 39 appearances, 27 of them starts, as they won the Championship and promotion.

It was a repeat of his feat the previous season under Rangers head coach Russell Martin on loan to Southampton.

“Excited” by the signing, Martin told Rangers’ website: “He is a player who we thoroughly enjoyed working with during my time at Southampton.

A “delighted” Rothwell says there were two main factors that persuaded him to end his three-year spell with his Premier League parent club.

“It is brilliant,” he said. “The size of the club speaks for itself and, as soon as the interest was there, it was an immediate yes from me.

“With Russell coming in too, it made that decision a little bit easier because working with him in the past and I know what type of guy he is and how he wants to do things. That was an even bigger pull for me. “

Rothwell came through Manchester United’s youth ranks and, after loan spells with Blackpool and Barnsley, joined Oxford United.

He moved on to Blackburn Rovers and then, in 2022, to Bournemouth and has made 351 club appearances overall in his career, scoring 24 goals.

Rothwell follows right-back Max Aarons to Ibrox from Bournemouth, the 25-year-old having joined on a season-long loan, while 22-year-old fellow midfielder Lyall Cameron was a free agent arrival from Dundee.
