The Lilacs star reveals cancer news and ‘takes step back’ for chemotherapy

An Indie music star has shared a devastating health update as he revealed he will be stepping back from his band duties. Sam Birchall of The Lilacs took to the band’s X, formerly known as Twitter, account to share the heartbreaking news after initially thinking he had received the all clear.

The guitarist shared a statement with his fans as he revealed he will be taking a step back from his role to focus on his health. It read: “Lilacs Fans, Friends, Family x.

“After recently hearing the news that my scans were looking clear from cancer, it is with utter disappointment to tell you that after just my first couple of check ups back, the cancer is infact showing again and remains present. “

He went on: “Perhaps a real reflection of what cancer is, it picks you up and drops you, plays with your mind and just when you think you’ve got it on the ropes it throws another swing.

“With this in mind I must again put my health first and will therefore be stepping back from the band for the coming summer months to complete chemotherapy and get this thing beat once and for all. This is certainly not a long term thing and I will be aiming to be back just in time for Manchester Academy in November and better than ever! “

He explained how recent gigs had been some of the best in the band’s last five years. Sets included an impressive Isle of Wight offering and supporting Sting at Cardiff Castle.

Sam went on to say that while cancer might think it is powerful, nothing is more powerful than music and its community.

He added: “With this in mind, all Lilacs summer shows will still go ahead as planned and a deputy player will be standing in so please make him feel really welcome and support the lads over the festival season like always! “

Signing off, he said: “P. S – I know there will be loads of messages and I really appreciate everyone’s support but I just won’t be able to reply to them all, so please respect mine and my family’s privacy during this time and I will catch you all when I’m better x. “

Fans were quick to send messages in the comments section. One user wrote: “Hope it goes well, keep fighting & can’t wait to see u on stage at Manchester Academy. ” Another added: “You’ve got this, Sam. Thinking of you, mate, and wishing the fastest of recoveries. “

And a third said: “Devastated for you Sam. You can beat this keep fighting. Love from us all with fingers crossed. ” They added a red love heart emoji to their supportive message.

European champion and two-time Olympian Ciara Mageean has been diagnosed with cancer.

The middle-distance runner, from Portaferry in Northern Ireland, said the diagnosis has “been a lot to take in”, but added she is “ready to face this with the same fight I’ve always brought to the track”.

Posting on Instagram, 33-year-old Mageean said: “To everyone who’s been part of my journey so far, I have some difficult news to share: I’ve been diagnosed with cancer.

“It’s been a lot to take in, but I’ve already started treatment and I’m incredibly grateful to be surrounded by the love and support of my family and close friends.

“Right now, my focus is on healing and taking things one day at a time. I kindly ask that you respect my privacy and that of my loved ones as we move through this together.

Mageean has won gold, silver and bronze medals at the European Championships.

After recovering from a serious ankle injury, she came third in 2016 and was a runner-up in 2022 before topping the podium in Rome for Ireland last year.

Mageean made her Olympic debut in Rio in 2016 and competed at the delayed 2021 Games in Tokyo, where her preparations were hampered by a calf issue.

She was set to race at the Paris Olympics last year as a reigning European champion but an Achilles injury ruled her out on the eve of her 1500m heat.

Mageean’s stellar career has also included a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in 2022, fourth place at the World Championships in 2023, and Irish records in the 800m, 1,000m, 1500m and mile.

She was named the 2023 BBC Northern Ireland Sports Personality of the Year after an impressive year, in which she broke national records and was fourth in a competitive World Championships final.

European Athletics posted on X: “We’re all behind you, Ciara.

“Everyone at European Athletics sends their best wishes to Ciara Mageean following her recent cancer diagnosis. “

Portaferry GAA, who Mageean used to represent in camogie, said she is “truly an inspiration to so many people”.

“We are all behind you in this fight,” the club said.

“You and your family as always have our full support every step of the way.

Celtic sign Japanese centre-back Inamura

Celtic have signed Hayato Inamura on a four-year contract after the Japanese centre-half left Albirex Niigata in his homeland.

The 23-year-old has spent less than a year with the J-League club after joining from Tokyo University.

Inamura has made 36 appearances for the Niigata club, including 17 this season – all but two of them starts.

“He’s a young player full of promise and potential,” said Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers.

“I know that he’s delighted to be taking this next step in his career by joining us, and we look forward to welcoming him into the squad. “

Inamura will join compatriots Daizen Maeda and Reo Hatate at Celtic Park, while Kyogo Furuhashi, Yuki Kobayashi, and Tomoki Iwata have also been at the Scottish champions in recent years.

All were signed by former boss Ange Postecoglou, who spent three-and-a-half years in charge of Yokohama F. Marinos before his switch to Glasgow in June 2021.

Inamura has chosen to wear the number 25 donned by childhood idol Shunsuke Nakamura, who starred for Celtic between 2005 and 2009.

“Many Japanese players have had success at this club,” Inamura told CelticTV. “Across the world, this is a massive club and is really well known. I am truly excited to be joining Celtic. It’s a huge opportunity for me.

“So far, the current Japanese players have been performing at a high level. I think that is why there are expectations on Japanese players. I really want to live up to those expectations and do my best.

“Regarding Nakamura, I used to imitate his kicking style when I was a kid. He was one of my favourite players. “

Albirex sit second bottom of the J-League after 22 games following their 4-0 weekend defeat by eighth-placed Machida Zelvia.

Afterwards, Inamura announced it was his final game, telling the club website: “I am sorry to have made this decision when the team is in a difficult situation.
