‘Stokes pushes the limit and gives England a peek into their nightmare’

Five overs, in case you’re wondering.

There have been five overs of actual cricket in the time we’ve had a row about shaking hands, a Royal Rumble on the Oval square and a national state of emergency over another part of Ben Stokes’ anatomy.

If two of those incidents are little more than storms in teacups, one is anything but. Of all the possible combinations England could have fielded for the decisive final Test against India from Thursday, the absence of Stokes did not feature high on the list of probabilities.

The announcement of the team on Wednesday was a jaw-dropping moment, mainly for the stark reality of what a Stokesless England team looks like.

The stakes are high here – a first series win against India since 2018 and first in a five-Test series against anyone in the same timeframe are up for grabs – and will be even higher in England’s following Test, in Perth in November.

If it is an unthinkable blow to lose their talisman for this game, it also leaves England peering into their worst nightmare: taking on Australia in Australia without Ben Stokes. Depending how that series goes, there is an outside chance he has played his last Test in this country.

Once again, Stokes has pushed himself beyond his limit. In 2021 it was surgery on a shattered finger, two years later an operation to sort out his left knee. There were two separate hamstring injuries in 2024, the latter requiring surgery. Now it is a grade-three muscle tear in a right shoulder he also injured playing in the Indian Premier League in 2017.

Stokes has been sensational in this series, player of the match in each of the past two Tests and probably the difference between two evenly matched teams.

The 17 wickets he has taken and 140 overs he has bowled are the most in a single series across his career. He has outbowled the great Jasprit Bumrah and regularly carried the England attack on his back.

The direct hit run out of Rishabh Pant in the third Test at Lord’s changed the course of the match that ultimately gave England their 2-1 lead. His hundred at Old Trafford was a first in two years and made him only the fourth England man to register a five-wicket haul and century in the same Test.

As far back as 2018, then-England coach Trevor Bayliss was pleading with Stokes to look after himself, particularly when it came to his maniacal training habits. Now, as a 34-year-old, Stokes has toned down the training, still there is nothing that can hold him back in the heat of battle.

Is half a Ben Stokes all of the time better than a whole Ben Stokes half of the time? It’s a moot point, simply because Stokes is incapable of reining it in.

England were in a similar situation last year, when Stokes suffered his first hamstring injury. He missed four Tests, the fourth of which was the first on the tour of Pakistan. Stokes’ effort to get fit made him insular and grumpy, eventually taking it out on the team on the field in Multan, for which he later apologised. The hope is he has learned from that experience, and will not be weighed down at the beginning of the Ashes tour.

For now, he will remain with the England team, once again led by Ollie Pope. There is a larger room in the England hotel set aside for the captain, which Stokes has not given over to Pope. That probably says plenty about who remains in charge.

Stokes is one of four changes from the Old Trafford Test, leaving an odd-looking England team. Out go the weary Jofra Archer and Brydon Carse, as well as spinner Liam Dawson, whose comeback after eight years in the wilderness lasted one match. It turns out Dawson is not the second coming of Daniel Vettori, and he is scrapping with Rehan Ahmed for a place on the Ashes flight.

In come Jacob Bethell, who has played only one red-ball match in seven months; Gus Atkinson, one club game and one second XI fixture since May; and Jamie Overton, four first-class matches since September 2023. Josh Tongue is back after being dropped for the third Test. At 36, Chris Woakes plays all five Tests.

Along with those that have been driven into the ground over the past few weeks, Mark Wood and Shoaib Bashir are on the shelf, and Matthew Potts has disappeared from the Test reckoning.

Sam Cook might have been useful on an Oval greentop, but looks to have been judged on a disappointing debut against Zimbabwe. Josh Hull played here last year and has not been seen since. Lancashire’s Luke Wood was whispered about earlier in the summer. Maybe England should knock on the Sky commentary box and ask Stuart Broad to lace his boots up.

England won three out of four matches when Pope took charge last year, though the defeat did come here against Sri Lanka, one of the worst performances in the Bazball era.

Although India are set to be without Bumrah, they have won the other Test in this series in which he did not play. They will be buoyed by their escape at Old Trafford, which captain Shubman Gill said felt like a win.

Events at the end of that fifth day have been pored over, probably because there was little excitement generated by the cricket played.

Both teams had an understandable point of view. India were within their rights to want Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar to reach centuries, while England can’t be blamed for wanting to get off at the earliest opportunity after five sessions in the field. Still, there wasn’t much sign of the humility Brendon McCullum asked for at the beginning of the summer.

Similarly, Gill accused England of acting against the spirit of cricket during the third Test at Lord’s. Quite how Gautam Gambhir’s words to Oval groundsman Lee Fortis on Tuesday fit into the spirit of cricket is unclear.

Certainly the high jinks have caught the attention of those in Australia, who have put the sandpaper down long enough to have their say on England’s morals. If such tales are catnip down under, any doubts over Stokes’ fitness will put a further spring in the baggy green step.

Stokes is respected and feared by the Australians, even though he has not been at his chest-beating best on three previous tours there. There is a now a 114-day wait to see what sort of Stokes takes the field in the first Ashes Test.

Before then, there is a series for England to win, one that would rank among their best under Stokes, albeit with the skipper unable to see it through.

What started nearly seven weeks ago comes down to this. Gill and Joe Root. Bumrah and Archer. Bashir’s finger and Pant’s toe. Stokes and no Stokes. Handshakes and handbags. What a series.

Kim le Court became the first African to win a stage at the Tour de France Femmes, with her victory on stage five meaning she also took the yellow jersey from Marianne Vos.

Mauritian champion Le Court took a risk as she sat up to celebrate as she crossed the line in Gueret, but she held on to beat fast-closing Dutchwoman Demi Vollering by a wheel.

The 29-year-old was part of a seven-rider group that broke away from the peloton towards the end of the hilly 165.8km route, the longest stage of the fourth edition of the Tour de France Femmes.

She was the fastest finisher in the group and duly delivered, and now leads France’s Pauline Ferrand-Prevot by 18 seconds, while Vos drops to sixth after finishing in a group 33 seconds off the pace.

Olympic road race champion Kristen Faulkner withdrew after crashing in the neutralised zone before the official start, the third successive day on which the American had fallen.

Ozzy Osbourne: All the hidden signs of remembrance at emotional Birmingham procession

The Osbourne family were joined by the world as they said their final farewells to music icon Ozzy Osbourne with an emotional procession through his beloved Birmingham

The Prince of Darkness made his final journey on Wednesday as his coffin made its way through his beloved Birmingham. Thousands of fans gathered the streets to remember Ozzy Osbourne following his death last week at the age of 76.

Ozzy died just weeks after his fans had gathered for his final appearance on stage at the Back To The Beginning concert at Villa Park. And on Wednesday, while there were a number of key tributes all across the city, there were also a number of more subtle nods to the music icon.

His wife of over 40 years, Sharon Osbourne, was in tears at the emotional farewell as the procession headed down Birmingham’s Broad Street. Ozzy was followed by his family – including wife Sharon – in the special procession that was accompanied by a live brass band, Bostin’ Brass.

And fans were also on hand to help the heartbroken family on the day. There were chants of ‘Ozzy, Ozzy, Ozzy’ ‘we love you Sharon’ and ‘we love you Osbournes, we do’ to pubs blasting out Ozzy’s poignant hit Changes as they tried to do everything they could to show them they are with them in their grief.

Here, we look at some of the less noticeable tributes on such an emotional occasion.

A visibly emotional Sharon braved the occasion as fans shouted “Ozzy Ozzy Ozzy” during a procession through the streets of the musician’s hometown of Birmingham. And it was fans on social media who were quick to spot her subtle touching tribute to her husband.

One user on Twitter/X, uploaded an image of Ozzy’s wedding ring and compared it to the one Sharon seemed to have attached to her necklace. In the post, the user wrote: “Sharon Osbourne wearing Ozzy’s wedding ring in a chain around her neck while mourning him. We love you Shaz.”

Louis is Ozzy’s son from his previous marriage to Thelma Riley. He also opted to give a sweet nod to his dad in his clothing style. He wore a purple tie which featured a skull-and-crossbones.

The decision followed suit with Ozzy’s other kids and wife Sharon, who all paid their own unique tribute to the rocker.

The funeral cortege for the iconic rocker passed by the star’s two-bedroom childhood home. The procession took them by 14 Lodge Road in Birmingham as thousands of fans lined the streets throughout the city.

The home was Ozzy’s family home as a child and his family also spent around five minutes at the Black Sabbath Bridge, where they lay flowers and looked at the huge amount of touching tributes that had been left by fans.

Kelly wore dad’s iconic sunglasses

Daughter Kelly, 40, was visibly upset throughout the day as she helped to comfort her siblings, mother and son Sid. But in her own unique tribute, the star opted to wear her dad’s iconic sunglasses for the occasion.

The quiet tribute clearly showed her pride of her dad as she wore the trademark round shades. According to NPR, the sunglasses were first incorporated by Ozzy as a nod to John Lennon in the 1990s. As the years went on, the look became incorporated into his everyday appearance.

Jack’s tie pin

Like his siblings, Jack took time to add a unique accessory to his outfit in Birmingham. While he was clearly overcome with emotion, Jack waved at the crowd on Wednesday.

And in the images, the 39-year-old was seen wearing a small silver cross pin on the end of his tie. The sweet call was in reference to his dad’s choice of necklace throughout the years.

The eldest daughter of Sharon and Ozzy was also seen sporting her own tribute to her father. Aimee, 41, wore a a bat broach on her blazer in Birmingham.

It marked Ozzy’s well-known link to the animal following a bizarre on-stage moment. Writing in his autobiography in 2010 titled I Am Ozzy, he explained the situation. He said: “Somebody threw a bat [on stage]. I just thought it was a rubber bat. And I picked it up and put it in my mouth. I bit into it.”

Katie Price worries fans with appearance in family photo after explaining weight loss

Reality TV star Katie Price has sparked renewed concern over her appearance this week. It came after she shared a photo of herself beside two relatives, taken whilst enjoying some time with her family, in a post on social media.

The photo showed Katie, 47, stood beside her nieces in an outdoor area. The former glamour model was seen wearing a white top, a grey jacket, black leggings and white trainers whilst posing with her arms around her loved ones.

It was one of several “family time” photos shared by Katie on Facebook yesterday and she wrote in the caption of that post: “My beautiful nieces.” She was met with concern on the platform, which comes after Katie revealed her weight last month amid people being “obsessed” over it.

Amidst trolling and jokes about her appearance, several people expressed concern in the comments section. One person wrote: “Katie you look painfully thin.” Another said in their reaction: “Her legs don’t look real.” Someone wrote: “Wow, not much left of Katie. I don’t know if this is a healthy look.”

Others defended Katie against the commentary that her post had prompted on the platform this week. It included one fan criticising those who poked fun over her appearance, with them suggesting that the reaction was “hurtful”.

The fan wrote in the comments section: “It’s disappointing to see people making jokes about someone’s body, especially when they don’t know them personally.” They added: “It’s not only hurtful but also sets a bad example for children.”

Defending Katie, another person wrote: “Wow these comments are vile this [woman] obviously struggles with her appearance. In a world where you can be anything be kind. All the hates she gets and this [woman] is still smiling.”

It isn’t the first time that Katie has faced trolling and concern over her appearance. The former I’m A Celebrity star has previously spoken about having lost weight in recent years and addressed the concern she has been subjected to.

As reported earlier this year, Katie shared that she had “wanted” to lose weight. She’s suggested that it came after she gained weight whilst recovering from a broken foot a few years ago and then subsequently through IVF treatment.

On her podcast, the Katie Price Show, in January, she said: “Everyone’s said I’ve got skinny and that.” Her sister Sophie Price said: “You’ve got well thin.” Katie said: “I know. But there’s a reason. If anyone Google’s me, I’ve always been skinny.”

Katie added: “But people have to remember, when I broke my feet, I was in a wheelchair, not active – before that I was running all the time. Then I’ve gone through IVF three times [and] that pumps you and puts weight on – I haven’t done anything.”

She continued in the discussion on her podcast at the time: “Now I’ve realised when I was eating pasta, oats, or milk or anything, it bloats me. […] So I’ve been avoiding stuff like that and not feeling so sluggish and tired after.”

New Gunner Gyokeres Could Debut In Arsenal’s Game Vs Tottenham

Manager Mikel Arteta announced on Wednesday that Viktor Gyokeres might make his Arsenal debut in front of 50, 000 Hong Kong supporters this week.

The $67 million Swedish striker attended an open training session at Kai Tak Stadium, where Arsenal will face Tottenham on Thursday in their bitter rivals’ first game away from the UK.

Gyokeres, who signed from Sporting Lisbon for the club for a short time before being released, will have a chance to play on the field if the club’s medical staff determines that he is ready, according to Arteta.

However, he and his new teammates, who met in Singapore last week against AC Milan and Newcastle, are playing fitness catch-up.

Arteta told reporters, “Yes, I understand he’s only finished today’s session and yesterday, very little.”

It’s possible if the medical staff is pleased with his condition and that they will evaluate him tonight.

Everyone is fine with the rest of the squad, according to the statement.

The 27-year-old Gyokeres fired Sporting to the Portuguese title last year with 39 goals and made headlines when he scored a Champions League hat-trick against Manchester City.

The Portuguese striker, who chose to wear the number 14 shirt that Arsenal legend Thierry Henry made famous, scored a remarkable 97 goals in 102 games for the club.

He has a five-year contract with Arsenal, which could cost the north London club $89 million with performance-related bonuses.

His arrival increased Arsenal’s close-season spending to about $ 277,000.

Additionally, they have signed goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, Christian Norgaard, Christian Norgaard, and Noni Madueke, along with defender Cristhian Mosquera, midfielder Martin Zubimendi, and midfielder Martin Zubimendi.

Arteta, who wants to become the first manager to win the Premier League since Arsene Wenger in the 2003/2004 season, was undoubtedly pleased with the way the club has handled the situation in the transfer window.

Arteta, who finished second in the Premier League for the third time in three seasons, said, “I am very happy with the way we have approached the window and how aggressive we have been.

Martin Odegaard, the captain of Arsenal, expressed his excitement at the prospect of playing alongside Gyokeres, a fellow Scandinavian, and called him a “very complete player.”

Norwegian international Odegaard said, “I think you’ve all seen what he’s done so far in his career, especially in his final season at Sporting, and the statistics speak for themselves.”

He is physically strong, quick, good at finishing, and intelligent, as you may well know.

He’s a very complete striker, Odegaard said.

“I’m really looking forward to having him join the team.” You can already tell how good he is, how much energy he has, and how willing he is to work.
