Has the US cancelled free speech?

Why are US academics suing to protest the administration’s crackdown on pro-Palestine activism?

The Trump administration’s policy of detaining, detaining, canceling visas, and deporting students who engage in pro-Palestinian advocacy has drawn the attention of a number of groups of professors in the US.

According to Jamil Jaffer, executive director of the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University, one of the organizations that brought the lawsuit, the US government’s crackdown on free speech is having a chilling effect on academic institutions.

David Beckham hugs Harper and Victoria on superyacht amid stormy family feud

Rumors have been swirling about a bitter split between the Beckham family for months, but proud father David looked happy as a clam as he hugged his wife and daughter on a lavish vacation.

When David Beckham hugged his wife and daughter in St Tropez, he seemed content while on the water. On a luxurious yacht, the 50-year-old sporting legend sat with his wife Victoria, a 51-year-old, and daughter Harper Seven, a 14-year-old.

The sports star looked casual while sporting a smile that ran across his face while wearing a dark t-shirt and a sand-colored cap. Victoria snuck up on her husband while her shoulders were sagging.

Harper, Harper’s teenage daughter, was pretty in pink as she sat down for a hooded top. On the boat’s deck, the trio was seen posing for a photo together.

The well-known family is known for taking summer vacations in the south of France each year. Second son Romeo, 22, who reportedly spent the afternoon cruising around the ocean on a jet ski, joined them.

Father, daughter and wife posed and smiled for the cameras as their boat – worth a reported £16 million – bobbed gently on the Mediterranean waters. The Daily Mail shared the sun-soaked snaps which made the family look like they had not a care in the world while enjoying the picturesque French weather.

The calm image is in contrast to the stormy headlines that have haunted the Beckham family in recent months. A feud is said to have erupted between the family and eldest son Brookyln – who is married to American Billionaire heiress Nicola Peltz.

Fans became concerned for the Beckhams after learning that David had been snubbed by Brooklyn and his wife during his May 50th birthday celebrations. There have been reports of Nicola and Brooklyn having a fight with his younger brothers in the months that followed, and there have also been reports that the couple have been involved in family disputes since Nicola and her husband marries in 2022.

Fans have been looking for the smallest details of a feud after shady comments and quips on social media.

Romeo and his younger sister Harper appeared on social media on Saturday to say they were content to be outside feud-fueled headlines.

The pair made eye contact while dining out in St Tropez and making casual appearances. Romeo was pictured sporting a round-necked white sweater and a red baseball cap.

Meanwhile, Harper chose a white hoodie with the slogan “Seven” printed on the front. Both of their parents’ children looked up in good spirits after an evening out with them.

Although Vicky, Dave, and their children have been enjoying the sun in France, estranged son Brooklyn has been spotted in the UK, far from his Hollywood mansion. Fans spotted the couple as they took a leisurely stroll through a picturesque garden.

While they both chose to wear casual clothing, Nicola chose to take a candid photo of her husband by a charming garden well. In one sweet photo, Brooklyn and Nicola posing in front of a mirror catch their eye.

Fans speculated that the couple planned their trip to avoid a run-in while the rest of the Beckham family was away in the UK, which may have been attributed to the couple.

Iran’s plan to abandon GPS is about much more than technology

For the past few years, governments across the world have paid close attention to conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. There, it is said, we see the first glimpses of what warfare of the future will look like, not just in terms of weaponry, but also in terms of new technologies and tactics.

Most recently, the United States-Israeli attacks on Iran demonstrated not just new strategies of drone deployment and infiltration but also new vulnerabilities. During the 12-day conflict, Iran and vessels in the waters of the Gulf experienced repeated disruptions of GPS signal.

This clearly worried the Iranian authorities who, after the end of the war, began to look for alternatives.

“At times, disruptions are created on this [GPS] system by internal systems, and this very issue has pushed us toward alternative options like BeiDou,” Ehsan Chitsaz, deputy communications minister, told Iranian media in mid-July. He added that the government was developing a plan to switch transportation, agriculture and the internet from GPS to BeiDou.

Iran’s decision to explore adopting China’s navigation satellite system may appear at first glance to be merely a tactical manoeuvre. Yet, its implications are far more profound. This move is yet another indication of a major global realignment.

For decades, the West, and the US in particular, have dominated the world’s technological infrastructure from computer operating systems and the internet to telecommunications and satellite networks.

This has left much of the world dependent on an infrastructure it cannot match or challenge. This dependency can easily become vulnerability. Since 2013, whistleblowers and media investigations have revealed how various Western technologies and schemes have enabled illicit surveillance and data gathering on a global scale – something that has worried governments around the world.

Iran’s possible shift to BeiDou sends a clear message to other nations grappling with the delicate balance between technological convenience and strategic self-defence: The era of blind, naive dependence on US-controlled infrastructure is rapidly coming to an end. Nations can no longer afford to have their military capabilities and vital digital sovereignty tied to the satellite grid of a superpower they cannot trust.

This sentiment is one of the driving forces behind the creation of national or regional satellite navigation systems, from Europe’s Galileo to Russia’s GLONASS, each vying for a share of the global positioning market and offering a perceived guarantee of sovereign control.

GPS was not the only vulnerability Iran encountered during the US-Israeli attacks. The Israeli army was able to assassinate a number of nuclear scientists and senior commanders in the Iranian security and military forces. The fact that Israel was able to obtain their exact locations raised fears that it was able to infiltrate telecommunications and trace people via their phones.

On June 17 as the conflict was still raging, the Iranian authorities urged the Iranian people to stop using the messaging app WhatsApp and delete it from their phones, saying it was gathering user information to send to Israel. Whether this appeal was linked to the assassinations of the senior officials is unclear, but Iranian mistrust of the app run by US-based corporation Meta is not without merit.

Cybersecurity experts have long been sceptical about the security of the app. Recently, media reports have revealed that the artificial intelligence software Israel uses to target Palestinians in Gaza is reportedly fed data from social media. Furthermore, shortly after the end of the attacks on Iran, the US House of Representatives moved to ban WhatsApp from official devices.

For Iran and other countries around the world, the implications are clear: Western platforms can no longer be trusted as mere conduits for communication; they are now seen as tools in a broader digital intelligence war.

Tehran has already been developing its own intranet system, the National Information Network, which gives more control over internet use to state authorities. Moving forward, Iran will likely expand this process and possibly try to emulate China’s Great Firewall.

By seeking to break with Western-dominated infrastructure, Tehran is definitively aligning itself with a growing sphere of influence that fundamentally challenges Western dominance. This partnership transcends simple transactional exchanges as China offers Iran tools essential for genuine digital and strategic independence.

The broader context for this is China’s colossal Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). While often framed as an infrastructure and trade project, BRI has always been about much more than roads and ports. It is an ambitious blueprint for building an alternative global order. Iran – strategically positioned and a key energy supplier – is becoming an increasingly important partner in this expansive vision.

What we are witnessing is the emergence of a new powerful tech bloc – one that inextricably unites digital infrastructure with a shared sense of political defiance. Countries weary of the West’s double standards, unilateral sanctions and overwhelming digital hegemony will increasingly find both comfort and significant leverage in Beijing’s expanding clout.

This accelerating shift heralds the dawn of a new “tech cold war”, a low-temperature confrontation in which nations will increasingly choose their critical infrastructure, from navigation and communications to data flows and financial payment systems, not primarily based on technological superiority or comprehensive global coverage but increasingly on political allegiance and perceived security.

As more and more countries follow suit, the Western technological advantage will begin to shrink in real time, resulting in redesigned international power dynamics.

Celebrities are gathering in force to pay special tribute to England Women’s football team as they bid for back-to-back European success tonight. The Lionesses take on Spain in Basel, Switzerland, hoping to lift the Euro trophy once again, three years on from their maiden success.

However, they know they are up against it as they face a Spanish side who defeated them in the World Cup final in 2023. In preparation, the group has been turning up the volume to Heather Small’s Proud tune as they keep their pre-game ritual in tact.

Celebrities have taken to social media to express their support for Serena Wiegman’s team as they face off for the final time in the tournament.

Among them was the Spice Girls. The iconic girl band’s official Instagram and Twitter /X accounts shared the same message alongside a snap of the group – minus Victoria Beckham – posing on stage. Melanie C also wore an England shirt in the image, as their rallying call read: Come on @Lionesses! We wish you the best of luck for the #WEURO2025 final today #GirlPower @England”

EastEnders star and staunch football fan Ross Kemp give a video message to the girls, saying: “I just want to wish the Lionesses all the very very best against Spain. You have the skill, you have the mindset, you have the talent, and you have backing so come on England and come on the Lionesses.”

Shaun Wallace, the creator of the Quiz Show and the face of The Dark Destroyer on ITV’s The Chase, also posted two videos in support. His initial encounter with him featured an inspirational quote.

Let’s hope the Lionesses receive the gift of a fantastic performance and bring it home tonight, he added. Every day is a gift, so make the most of it every day. Have a wonderful Sunday and wish the Lionesses the best tonight.

A video of him saying, “Bring it home Lionesses,” was the next step. Girls, good luck today, and bring that trophy home.

The Royal Family’s official account also gave a rousing message to the squad. It shared a superb version of It’s Coming Home outside of Buckingham Palace.

They also wrote, “Let’s go girls! The @Lionesses will have the best of luck tonight’s Women’s Euro Final.

Additionally, Sarah Ferguson gave them the official seal of approval. She delivered her message early, saying, “We’re all in the backs, Lionesses.” Good luck for tomorrow”!

The occasion comes almost three years to the day since Wiegman’s team changed the face of women’s football in England following their defeat of Germany in the Euro 2022 final at Wembley. On that occasion Chloe Kelly’s extra-time winner would pass into English football folklore.

Then, a little over a year later, there was heartbreak as Spain beat the Lionesses 1-0 in the World Cup final in Sydney. The result came despite the heroics of legendary goalkeeper Mary Earps.

And now that England is attempting to win yet another prize, they are once more losing ground to the team.

A fashionable off-white jacket and a white shirt were atop a black waistcoat for Jack. A pair of black suit trousers and a black bow tie completed his ensemble.

Gyokeres unveiled before Arsenal beat Newcastle

Viktor Gyokeres, a new signing for Arsenal, was introduced to the Singapore crowd, and Max Dowman, a 15-year-old, impressed again with his team’s 3-2 pre-season victory over Newcastle.

On Saturday, Gyokeres waved to fans from the pitch before kick-off and completed a move that cost the Gunners up to £64 million.

However, the National Stadium’s fans did not take long to enjoy the moment when Anthony Elanga scored his first goal in the six-minute against Newcastle with a scuffed effort after Sandro Tonali had picked him up inside the box.

Kai Havertz and Ben White gave the Gunners some chances, but Mikel Merino’s 33rd minute effort from a clever Havertz flick on in the end was all that was left.

When Newcastle left-back Alex Murphy slammed Havertz’s low cross into his own net just two minutes later, Arsenal were in the lead.

Arsenal almost doubled their lead at half-time thanks to Nick Pope’s superb save from a Bukayo Saka acrobatic effort.

When Jacob Murphy was given space to shoot from the edge of the area and the ball bobbled past David Raya, one of those nine subs then drew Newcastle level.

Following a masterful run, Arteta again scored from the spot, with Martin Odegaard scoring from the spot, giving Arsenal the win. The forward won a penalty with the help of 15-year-old Dowman.

Gyokeres steals the show, blazingly.

The pre-season friendly was not going to be the most significant topic of the day as soon as Gyokeres’ arrival was made public prior to the game.

The noise levels increased significantly when the Swedish striker was welcomed onto the pitch from the tunnel surrounded by flames, as fans in the stadium did.

The 27-year-old forward arrived at the stadium right away to greet the crowd and has not practiced with his new team-mates.

Havertz has done a fantastic job leading Arsenal’s offense over the past few seasons, but Gyokeres is the type of center-forward who the average Gunners fan has awaited.

Victor has taken a long journey to bring him here, but we are thrilled to have him here. About his new signing, Mikel Arteta said.

He has been incredible, and we have always been very clear about what he wants to play and how passionately we are from beginning to end.

You can see the boys and the surrounding area, both very excited about his arrival.

Gyokeres might make his first appearance for Arsenal against Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday, but the Swede hasn’t trained with a team since the end of May.

He has undergone all necessary medical examinations, according to Arteta, and everything appears to be working.

However, I believe it is crucial to bring him up to speed with the appropriate levels of fitness.

We won’t stop him, so we’ll just need to assess him, and the medical team will do that. We also want to bring him with us as soon as possible. Arteta remarked.

When Dowman arrived, Arteta praised the promising youngster, who was a struggle.

Yes, it is unique. he stated. What he did today against this team in the space of his 15 years on the field is undoubtedly not something he’s seen frequently.

We’re delighted to have him, they say. I believe that because they placed him in this position so early in his development, the environment he’s in, his family, the people at the club and the academy as well [is] very helpful.

Riccardo Calafiori limped off just two minutes into the second half, leaving Arteta with only Jakub Kiwior, who was the only real issue with the match.

Newcastle is kept in push by Howe.

Similar to Arsenal, the conversation revolves around a Swedish striker who has dominated the Singaporean club’s history.

In light of the interest from Liverpool, Alexander Isak is considering his options, and manager Eddie Howe has been enthused about the future of the striker.

With Isak’s circumstances, and there was no chance for him to fly out with his team-mates during this trip to Asia, Howe said after the game that nothing had changed.

We haven’t been deceived, they say. Howe said, “We know we need to bring players in. That is something we have been anticipating for a while. Transfer window has been challenging recently. See what we can do, then.

One of Newcastle’s recent summer arrivals, another Swede, Elanga, scored his first goal in the box and joined William Osula as a standout.

Howe remarked, “It’s business as usual for the players.”
