Singer Jessie J appeared to drop a huge hint about her cancer diagnosis last month. The Price Tag star, 37, shocked fans this week by revealing she has early stage breast cancer and is holding on to the word “early” and plans to undergo surgery after her performance at this month’s Summertime Ball. The revelation made her words at her intimate North London concert on May 20 seem all the more poignant and significant.

On Wednesday, Jessie said she made her diagnosis public to help her process the news, and to show solidarity with others who are going through a similar experience. “I just wanted to be open and share it, ” she expressed. “One, because, selfishly, I do not talk about it enough. I’m not processing it because I’m working so hard.

“I also know how much sharing in the past has helped me with other people giving me their love and support and also their own stories. I’m an open book. It breaks my heart that so many people are going through so much similar and worse-that’s the bit that kills me.” She continued: “The timing of it has been mad but also beautiful and given me this incredible perspective in this time.

“But honestly I need to process it and talk about it and, I need a hug. You have loved me through all my good and hard times. And I don’t want this to be any different,” she concluded.

Just weeks earlier she told gig-goers at Union Chapel that she was putting herself first and wanted to have fun. Jessie said on stage: “I know we are all going through our own battles in life, we are all struggling in our own way. We talk about it sometimes, and sometimes we don’t.

“I’m grateful I have the voice and the strength to be able to put those experiences into songs that people can take and make them their own soundtrack to help them get through a tough time, a good time, a scary time.”

When she introduced her new single No Secrets, she also seemed to be referencing her cancer battle. Jessie said: “This song for me, more so than ever right now, is getting me through my life.”

Earlier this week, the former Voice UK coach told her 13.9 million Instagram followers: “Before No Secrets came out, I was diagnosed with early breast cancer. I’m highlighting the word ‘early’ – cancer sucks in any form – but I’m holding on to the word ‘early’. I have been in and out of tests this whole period.”

No Secrets details Jessie’s relationship with fame and her heartbreaking 2021 miscarriage, which she has since spoken openly about. Jessie, who is performing at Wembley Stadium next Sunday, told fans she would then “disappear for a bit” to have surgery.

But the singer said that despite her diagnosis, she still feels like she has found her “happy ending”. Jessie and basketball player Chanan Colman welcomed their first child, son Sky, in May 2023.

Talking about her song Sunflower, which is yet to be officially released, Jessie said: “I wrote this song about my boy – the happiest boy in the world unless he hasn’t had enough snacks. He is the love of my life, the joy of my day… I jump out of bed at 5am to make him something to eat and then wait for him to wake up.

“I never thought I would live this life… I prayed for it for so long. The joy it brings me is overwhelming. I hope anyone who has that same feeling in their heart gets their happy ending. It’s magic.

One-punch knockout saves Wardley in Huni title bout

British heavyweight Fabio Wardley delivered a stunning, one-punch 10th-round knockout to stop Justis Huni and claim the vacant interim WBA title.

The dramatic, unforgettable finish sent a rain-soaked Portman Road crowd into raptures.

Backed by a vocal home crowd of around 20,000 at Ipswich Town’s ground, an outboxed Wardley struggled to find his rhythm and pin down the slicker, sharper Huni.

Behind on the scorecards and facing defeat by the Australian, all it took was a single punch to turn things around for the 30-year-old.

“Eat your heart out Deontay Wilder, that was a Deontay Wilder moment,” Wardley’s promoter Frank Warren said afterwards.

The victory marked Wardley’s 18th knockout in 19 professional wins and moved him one step closer to a world title shot.

“I don’t profess to being any [Oleksandr] Usyk or Justis Huni who has all the skills, but I know how to win fights and that’s one thing I knew I had to do tonight,” said Wardley.

“Justis Huni is a great operator. We’d drilled everything over and over again. I should’ve performed better in some of those rounds.

With champions Usyk and Daniel Dubois set to meet for the undisputed title in July, Wardley – now ranked number one by the WBA – is well-positioned for a shot at global honours.

Huni, who replaced American Jarrell Miller on short notice, suffered his first professional defeat after 12 consecutive wins.

Dramatic turnaround provides perfect homecoming

An outdoor fight in the United Kingdom is never without its risks. Fans wore ponchos and reporters scrambled for shelter as heavy rain fell throughout the evening.

The downpour eased when Brisbane native Huni made his ring walk to a predictably hostile reception, before the mood shifted as a steely-faced and focused Wardley emerged.

Bathed in the golden glow of the floodlight, the Ipswich-born boxer soaked in the moment he had been dreaming of since turning professional.

The opening rounds saw both fighters cautiously size each other up.

Huni – well-schooled and boasting serious amateur pedigree – landed a thudding left hook followed by a sharp right in the third.

Wardley, who only took up boxing at 19 and turned pro after just four white-collar bouts, was known for his raw power and ability to dig deep.

But it was Huni landing the cleaner shots, especially with that left hook.

With only two contests beyond six rounds in his career, Wardley began to feel the pace. His timing was off and a grimace in the seventh said it all after Huni whipped in a punishing right hook.

Just when it seemed the homecoming would turn into a nightmare, Wardley achieved one of the biggest turnarounds in recent times to send the crowd into a frenzy.

What next for Wardley?

Wardley’s meteoric rise is nothing short of remarkable, especially for someone who only laced up the gloves a decade ago.

That said, there is room for caution. He struggled for large parts of the fight, raising the question of whether he is ready to mix it with Usyk, Dubois or Joseph Parker – three of the division’s most in-form fighters.

Still, Wardley has cleared every hurdle put in front of him in the pro ranks. He stopped domestic rival David Adeleye, beat Olympic medallist Frazer Clarke in a thriller, and has now added a respected international name in Huni with a dramatic, highlight-reel ending.

And when he has that sort of equaliser in his locker, he is a dangerous proposition for any heavyweight rival.

Italian Matteo Manassero and New Zealand’s Ryan Fox were tied for the lead after the third round at a closely contested Canadian Open.

Manassero and Fox both carded rounds of 64, each including seven birdies and one bogey as they moved to 14 under.

“It was a really good round”, said Manassero, whose bogey came at the 17th hole before he recovered the stroke with a birdie at the last.

“I missed the short one on 17, and I did miss a couple more short ones. I try to think of them just like a shot really, like a driver, like a six-iron, whatever. It’s just a shot.

” It wasn’t that hard for me to stay focused into what I was doing and not ruining]it] at the end. “

Manassero will be chasing his first PGA Tour title, while Fox is seeking a second just a month after his first triumph on the tour at the Myrtle Beach Classic.

” Obviously there’s a lot of good players behind me, “said Fox”. I feel like it’s going to take a pretty low]score] to get the job done. “

Lee Hodges and Kevin Yu both shot seven under par rounds of 63 and sit one back along with Matt McCarty.

A 65 from England’s David Skinns moved him on to 11 under along with seven other players, including overnight leader Cameron Champ.

Champ could only manage a one over-par 71 at TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley.

England’s Danny Willett (67) and Ireland’s Shane Lowry (68) are a shot further back on 10 under.

French Open Title Is ‘One I Really Wanted’ — Gauff

After winning the French Open title against Aryna Sabalenka on Saturday, Coco Gauff claimed a maiden trophy was “one I really wanted.”

The 21-year-old defeated the world number one at Roland Garros in a battle of 6-7 (5 / 7), 6-2, and 6-4.

According to American star Gauff, “I really wanted this because I do believe this was one of the tournaments that I thought I had the best chance of winning,” he said.

So I just started to feel regrets and other emotions if I didn’t complete my career and didn’t complete at least one of them.

I just had to go for it and make my best effort to get through the match today when I was playing Aryna. ”

Gauff was devastated when she lost to Iga Swiatek in the 2022 French Open final as a teenager and; had made it to the quarter-finals in Paris at least once in the previous four years.

The world number two, who also defeated Sabalenka in the 2023 US Open final, also came back from a set down to defeat Sabalenka in the final.

I recall watching her closely as the anthem was played, and I was also quite emotional when the Polish anthem was played. I thought, “Wow, this is such a cool moment.”

I kind of had those reflections when the (USA) anthem was playing today. ”

Not a day for great tennis

Gauff is the first woman to defeat a world number one in a set-dancing final since 2005’s Venus Williams defeated Lindsay Davenport at Wimbledon.

After losing final matches to Sabalenka and Jasmine Paolini in both the Madrid and Italian Opens, respectively, she won her first title since winning the WTA Finals trophy last year.

The wind swayed after the roof was opened just before the start of the match, according to Sabalenka, who described the situation as “terrible.”

Sincerely, Gauff remarked, “It wasn’t a day for great tennis.”

There are too many people out there today who could play great tennis, but it’s both a sport and an outdoor activity. ”

Spike Lee, an ardent New York Knicks fan, was present to celebrate with Gauff after her victory, as did American filmmaker Spike Lee.

In reference to the Knicks’ defeat by the Indiana Pacers last weekend in the NBA Eastern Conference Finals, she said, “I wanted to tell him, I had to do it. Even though the Knicks didn’t win, I gave him something to cheer for.”

In a 77-minute first set with eight breaks, both players struggled with serve especially.

If Swiatek had not ended the Pole’s title defense in the semi-finals, Sabalenka claimed that she would have defeated Gauff, but the actual champion refrained from believing that.

I disagree with that, I think. Gauff, who defeated Swiatek 6-1, 6-1 in the Madrid semi-finals last month, looked at the trophy she was holding next to her.

Iga and Iga were not in any doubt when I played her last time, but I did so in straight sets.

Because anything can actually happen, I don’t believe that is fair. ”
