Antigovernment protesters clash with riot police in Serbia

During a massive rally against populist President Aleksandar Vucic, who demanded an early parliamentary election, hundreds of anti-government protesters were detained in Serbia’s capital as a result of clashes with riot police.

Tens of thousands of demonstrators staged the protest, which comes after nearly eight months of persistent student opposition led by Serbia’s university students, which has shaken Vucic’s stronghold in the Balkan nation.

“We want elections,” we say! Many people were unable to get to the venue on Saturday as they filled the capital’s central Slavija Square and several blocks around it.

Ivica Dacic, the interior minister of Serbia, claimed that some protesters attacked the police. He claimed that police “arrest all those who attacked the police” using their positions to restore public order.

As they clashed with law enforcement, some demonstrators used trash bins as a shield against baton-wielding police. Some of them wore scarves and masks over their faces. Before kicking protesters with their shields, police used pepper spray.

Vucic and his right-wing Serbian Progressive Party have repeatedly disputed the need for an early vote and accused protesters of plotting to incite violence against orders from abroad, which they did not specify or provide evidence for.

Despite declining attendance in recent weeks and nearly eight months of almost daily protests, the overwhelming turnout for Saturday’s anti-Vucic rally suggested that the resolve is still present.

36, 000 people were present, according to Serbian police, at the start of the protest on Saturday. About 140, 000 people attended the student-led rally, according to an independent monitoring organization that tracks public gatherings.

Kebbi PDP Backs Coalition To Defeat APC In 2027

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kebbi State has indicated that it is ready to support any coalition that seeks to overthrow the All-Party Congress (APC) at both the state and national levels.

At the conclusion of the party’s stakeholders’ meeting on Saturday, when members expressed optimism about the party’s ability to resolve its ongoing internal conflicts, this statement was made in Birnin Kebbi.

One of the party’s chieftains, Ibrahim Mera, stated to journalists that the state chapter had committed to working closely to ensure the success of any initiative aimed at removing the APC from power.

We also agreed that the state congress should go on its first session, subject to the leadership’s approval, he continued.

He reiterated the party’s commitment to increase its presence in Kebbi State and win support from supporters.

Usman Suru, the Kebbi State PDP Chairman, also addressed the gathering, urging residents to persevere despite the current difficulties and reassure them that a better future is possible.

General Aminu Bande, the PDP candidate for governor in the state and throughout the nation, criticised the state’s and national economic hardship.

He claimed that arbitrary arrests and detentions were carried out by the APC-led Kebbi government.

Iran could resume uranium enrichment within months: IAEA chief

Despite a string of attacks by the United States and Israel that targeted its nuclear infrastructure, Iran may be able to restart uranium enrichment in a few months, according to Rafael Grossi, the head of the UN nuclear watchdog.

Donald Trump claimed this month’s attacks had “destroyed Iran’s nuclear ambitions by decades,” but the remarks were made on Saturday.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) director-general stated in a statement to CBS News on Saturday that some of the world’s top facilities are still operational despite the damage done.

According to Grossi, it could even be sooner than that. “They can have, you know, a few cascades of centrifuges spinning and producing enriched uranium in a matter of months,” she said.

He raised questions about Iran’s 60 percent enriched uranium stock, which is theoretically unsuitable for the production of more than nine nuclear weapons.

He acknowledged that the IAEA was unsure whether this stockpile had been moved or partially destroyed prior to the bombings. He said, “Something needs to be clarified at some point.”

Israeli attacks

Israeli airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear and military sites took place on June 13th, launching an Israeli assault.

Tehran has consistently refuted the claim that Israel claimed the attacks were intended to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons. Days later, the US attacked three of Iran’s nuclear facilities.

Iranian lawmakers reacted to Grossi’s request to inspect facilities, including the underground enrichment facility at Fordow, and ordered Iranian lawmakers to suspend cooperation with the IAEA in the wake of the attacks.

According to Grossi, we need to be able to confirm what is there, where it is, and what happened.

According to Israeli authorities, the Iranian Ministry of Health reported at least 627 civilian deaths throughout the nation during the 12-day assault, which also resulted in the deaths of 28 people in Israel as retaliatory strikes were launched by Iran.

71 people were killed in an Israeli missile attack on Tehran’s Evin Prison on June 23, according to Iran’s judiciary on Saturday, including military recruits, prisoners, and visitors.

Iranians believe Israel struck the facility, according to a report from Tehran, according to Resul Serdar Atas of Al Jazeera on Sunday.

The worst way to do that is to bomb the facility and injure people, he added. This prison does not specialize in particular crimes. Political prisoners, journalists, financial offenders, and prisoners from other countries are present.

Cristiano Ronaldo prefers rest over FIFA Club World Cup

Cristiano Ronaldo claims that he prefers to rest than compete in the updated FIFA Club World Cup in order to further his professional career.

The Portuguese international, who recently won the UEFA Nations League title, made the remarks on Saturday, two days after extending his stay with Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr.

Ronaldo’s contract, which Al Nassr announced on Thursday, would allow him to stay with the club after his 42nd birthday and possibly his final World Cup appearance in the United States, Canada, and Mexico in 2026.

When FIFA President Gianni Infantino claimed Ronaldo was in talks with playing in the Club World Cup despite Al Nassr failing to do so, the star forward quickly dismissed the speculation, which became more and more heated last month.

In a video posted by Al Nassr on X, Ronaldo stated, “I had some offers to play in the]Club World Cup, but I think it didn’t make sense because I prefer to have a good rest, a good preparation, because this season will be very long because it’s the World Cup season is over.”

“I want to be ready for the national team as well as Al Nassr,” he said. Therefore, I made the decision to play the final game of the Nations League without listening,” he continued.

“And of course, I love being in this club.”

Ronaldo scored for Portugal in the Nations League final against Spain earlier this month, which ended 2-2 before his side advanced to defeat the European champions on penalties.

The Portugal captain stated that the main reason he chose to remain at Al Nassr was to bring home a sizable trophy with the Riyadh-based side.

“It’s always my goal to succeed,” I said. And I still, Ronaldo continued, “believe in that,” he continued. Because I think I’ll be a champion in Saudi Arabia, I renewed the two years.

Ronaldo, who left Manchester United as a free agent and signed for Al Nassr in 2022, has 93 goals in 105 games for them overall.

Ireland omissions ‘still kill you inside’ – Timoney

Inpho

Nick Timoney admitted that his last appearance in Ireland was “a long time ago now.”

The 29-year-old has found the test game to be more challenging than the regular player in an inconsistent Ulster team.

The back row was a late addition for the same November’s Test against Argentina after making his debut for Andy Farrell’s side against the USA in July 2021, and he was sat in his Belfast home the day before the game, and he then started playing against Fiji a year later.

He hasn’t played since that game, which he did three years ago, despite being in a number of squads in recent years, including touring parties to New Zealand and South Africa.

Josh van der Flier, Jack Conan, Peter O’Mahony, Caelan Doris, and the odd man out making an impact off the bench have been Farrell’s loose forward trio consistently choosing three.

However, there are rarely opportunities for impress for back row hopefuls in Test matches against Georgia on Saturday and Portugal a week later when the former pair are away with the British and Irish Lions, O’Mahony retired, and Doris is injured.

“I’d be lying if I said there weren’t times when I was frustrated,” I said. I’ve definitely experienced times when I feel like I’m very close to it, and I’ve felt like I should have given it a shot and jumped in with it, Timoney said.

In the summer squad, Paul O’Connell will be in charge, with regular head coach Farrell serving as Lions duty, along with the likes of Cian Prendergast, Gavin Coombes, and Max Deegan.

Despite being successful in their respective provinces, each has had its own struggles to get selected ahead of Ireland’s established options.

Being a realist, you enter a lot of camps and are aware that you are not necessarily at the top of the pecking order, Timoney said.

“Every other lad is desperate to play, and the game against England is opening the Six Nations or something similar, and it still kills you a little bit every time you’re not announced or you’re not in the team.”

In the end, if you truly value playing for Ireland enough, you have no choice but to put more emphasis on improving and working harder, which is exactly what I try to achieve.

Timoney, who is now 29 years old, claims that he will still “come into every camp believing that this will be the case when he makes his real, international breakthrough.”

Timoney is well-versed in at least one star from Georgia’s past, despite having only sevens international experience against Saturday’s opponents.

He would frequently search YouTube for clips of the best back rows of the era as a youngster. Regular viewers included Sebastien Chabal, Sean O’Brien, David Wallace, and Stephen Ferris, but Mamuka Gorgodze, who racked up a vengeance, was a particular favorite.

“I have hours of Mamuka Gorgodze footage that I watched as a child. I used to watch his highlight video a lot of the time, “told Timoney of the former Montpellier back row, who was known as “Godzilla.”

There was a 10-minute compilation video of Mamuka Gorgodze playing a lot of European nations for Georgia, full of clips from them playing Poland, Russia, Spain, and other stuff when you were younger. As you would with lots of different rugby players that were in your position and kind of looked up to, you would look up some of their clips, their highlights.

We are aware of what is about to happen.

Under former Leicester Tigers and Edinburgh head coach Richard Cockerill, Timoney anticipates a significant challenge in Tbilisi while the undoubtedly quicker Davit Niniashvili is the country’s current star.

You won’t have an easy game against them because they’re big, physically, and passionate, he said.

We know what’s coming because we’ve seen that with a lot of their performances over the past few years.

Tyrone ‘kept going’ in Dublin win – O’Rourke

In their 0-23 to 0-16 All-Ireland victory over Dublin, Tyrone boss Malachy O’Rourke praised the attitude of his players.

The Red Hands’ substitutes scored late goals to pull them out of the Dubs in a tight and heated match.

And O’Rourke was pleased that his team endured the entirety as they reached their first All-Ireland semi-final since 2021 and won the first championship game against Dublin since 2008.

“I’m happy for them all to cross the finish line and pass.” You have to acknowledge that you are facing a high-quality opponent and that you are not going to have it all your own way, he told BBC Sport NI.

“I’m delighted with the boys’ way they dug, defended, and managed to get some good scores.”

O’Rourke expressed his satisfaction with the contributions made by the entire squad, especially in the second half, despite the fact that the conditions made the match even more difficult.

“We were a little let down by how we played in the first half, but the two-pointers kept us in the game and gave us a point.”

We felt more in us because we cheaply used unforced errors and Dublin’s increased pressure on us. We managed to turn the table back half and put more pressure and urgency on them, he continued.
