Ogun Govt Delegation Visits Kano, Donates ₦22m To Families Of Deceased Athletes

A powerful delegation from Ogun State, led by the Deputy Governor, Noimot Salako-Oyedele, made its way to Kano on Monday morning to express condolences to the state government and the victims’ families.

Governor Dapo Abiodun’s condolences were conveyed by Salako-Oyedele, and a $1 million donation was made as initial support for each of the victims’ families.

In these trying times, the governor is out of the state on Hajj, but we felt the need to be there to show our support for him, the government, and the people of Kano State, Salako-Oyedele said.

“This is a heartbreaking loss for Kano State, the athletics industry, and especially the families and friends of the people who were affected by this tragic incident,” said the statement. Our prayer is that Allah accepts the deceased’s return to Him, pardons their shortcomings, and grants them Aljanat Firdaus, she continued.

Tokunbo Talabi, the governor of Ogun, Wasiu Isiaka, the executive secretary of the Gateway Games LOC, Kweku Tandoh, the commissioner for sports development, Wasiu Isiaka, and other officials and athletes made up the Ogun delegation.

The Deputy Governor, Aminu Gwarzo, who thanked the Ogun State Government for the kind gesture and solidarity, delivered the delegation’s thanks at the Government House in Kano.

“Governor Abiodun’s concern is unquestionable,” we said. Shortly after the incident, he called to express his thoughts to the Kano State government and the populace. Gwarzo said that this concern is being reinforced by the support shown today.

Lagos Govt To Resume Monthly Environmental Sanitation

On Sunday, the Lagos State government made the announcement that the sanitation exercise would resume every month.

Following an inspection tour to Idi-Araba and Orile Iganmu, Alaba Rago, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, made the point that all residents must adopt good sanitation practices as a way of life.

The Lagos State Government has decided to begin the monthly environmental sanitation exercise, according to the commissioner, Kunle Adeshina, the spokesman for the ministry. A formal start date will soon be made public.

Wahab said at Alaba Rago Market that law enforcement officers would frequently visit the market and that the market had been shut down sometime last year. Wahab argued that it would be unfortunate if the market had to be closed once more because of unhygienic activities.

They have given them until tomorrow evening, “We’ll decide whether the market should or shouldn’t be sealed,” he said, “and they have extended the market, pushed it to the road, blocked all the median system, and they have dumped their waste.”

The commissioner claimed that the market’s chairman has agreed that all infractions will be resolved and that the ministry will have no choice but to punish those who violate the regulations.

He issued a warning to traders selling on the road, drainage setback, and median at Alaba Rago Market, Badagry Expressway, and Ojo Local Government Area, to move their goods into the main market and conduct business there. He stated that if the unfavorable business practices persist, the government would lock the market by 6pm on Monday.

He argued that every state’s market should be aware that anyone trading illegally on the road or through the drainage channels should abstain from it because it does not permit that.

He urged people to support the government’s efforts to stop the unsanitary practice of disposing of illegal waste, arguing that it was preferable for everyone to take control of all the infrastructure the government provides.

Iraq probes fish die-off in marshes

Iraqi authorities have opened an investigation into a mass die-off of fish in the country’s central and southern marshlands, the latest in a series of such incidents in recent years.

One possible cause for the devastation is a shortage of oxygen, triggered by low water flow, increased evaporation and rising temperatures driven by climate change, according to officials and environmental activists. Another is the use of chemicals by fishermen.

“We have received several citizens’ complaints,” said Jamal Abd Zeid, chief environmental officer for the Najaf governorate, which stretches from central to southern Iraq, adding that a technical inspection team had been set up.

He explained that the team would look into water shortages, electrical fishing, and the use by fishermen of “poisons”.

For at least five years, Iraq has endured successive droughts linked to climate change. Authorities further attribute the severe decline in river flow to the construction of dams by neighbouring Iran and Turkiye.

The destruction of Iraq’s natural environment adds another layer of suffering to a country that has already faced decades of war and political oppression.

“We need lab tests to determine the exact cause” of the fish die-off, said environmental activist Jassim al-Assadi, who suggested that agricultural pesticides could also be responsible.

Investigations into similar incidents have shown that the use of poison in fishing can lead to mass deaths.

He has won over a legion of fans after never being far from King Charles’ side at some of his most high-profile appearances. Lieutenant Colonel Jonny Thompson has become known as the ‘hunky’ equerry after catching the eye of royal fans while on duty with both the King and Queen Camilla in his trademark kilt.

And now it has emerged he has tied the knot for a second time, months after becoming engaged to PR executive Olivia Lewis. It emerged last year that the soldier, who is from the 5th Battalion Royal Regiment of Scotland, had struck up a romance with Olivia after he split from his first wife several years ago.

And according to the Mail On Sunday, the pair tied the knot just over a week ago in an ‘elegant’ and ‘low-key’ ceremony at St Mary’s Church in Great Bedwyn, Wiltshire, which was followed by a lunch hosted by the bride’s parents. However, it seems it was shortly back to work after the big day as just two days later, the equerry was spotted in Canada with the King and Queen on their whistlestop visit across the Atlantic.

After dating for a year, the couple was later revealed to be in love with Olivia and that they were “well matched and very happy” at the time. Their engagement was later made public in The Times, with the happy news coming just days after he was promoted to Charles “super equerry.”

Lt Col Thompson will now have a new role, which will allow him to work with both the King and the Queen and be in charge of the monarch’s private affairs. Unfortunately, this will mean he won’t be as visible to the royals as they are in public.

Equerries are drawn from the armed forces and are required to assist the royals both inside their residences and when out and about on public engagements.

He has been on the King’s side since the beginning of his reign, and he was a notable guest at the late Queen’s funeral and the Coronation. He also attracted a new generation of English Channel fans when he joined Charles and Camilla on their 2023 trip to France.

He was also seen sitting behind Prince Harry and Meghan Markle at a service to mark the late Queen’s Platinum Jubilee last year. Also, he welcomed former Prime Minster Rishi Sunak as he visited Buckingham Palace to see the King.

One fan previously described Jonny Thompson as a “great hunk” on X! While another person expressed their feelings for King Charles’ new royal equerry, adding, “I think I’m getting a wee crush on it.”

Tatler magazine, a society publication, praised his ability to “look as good in a suit as he goes in a kilt,” as well. The King’s equerry wields its distinctive brand of quiet, charming power, according to the statement, “From within the palace walls, at the coronation, or on the opening night of the Berntson Bhattacharjee Gallery in Fitzrovia, where he wore a bunny tie and charmed India Rose James”

EastEnders star James Bye has sold his home and is now living in a field after bidding farewell to Albert Square earlier this year. In one of the soap’s saddest episodes, marking its 40th birthday, James’ character, Martin Fowler, was killed off when the Queen Vic collapsed, leaving his legion of loyal fans bereft.

Following the dramatic scenes, James, 41, who is currently playing Mr Darcy in a theatre tour of Death Comes to Pemberley, has made a major life change as his wife told their followers they have sold their home and moved into caravan – with their four kids and two blind dogs. Revealing the surprising news on Instagram, Victoria said: “It’s official …because we’ve only gone and sold our ‘forever home’. And not only that. We’ve done it so that we can move into a field – and into a caravan…

You read that correctly, yes. A cat, two blind dogs, and a tin box on wheels with barely enough room to swing. Now, you might be wondering what in the world we’re doing (I know, but I’m in denial)! “

Because both their parents had done it in the 1980s, Victoria explained the “method to their madness.”

She claimed that James’ sister was actually born in a wheel home, saying, “A dream we’ve long since had but never had the time to believe we could.”

“And yet somehow, we thought, “We have more on our plate than ever.” Sod it . It’s either now or never. Our year is dedicated to change. And that’s us.

What could possibly go wrong, I mean? (Er, right. Everything seems to be true. But let’s just get past that bit and resume our pursuit of our dreams (and all that gumph).

“And it’s not surprising that our parents both did the same thing in the 1980s!” They still managed to survive! (just about!) In fact, James’ sister was born in their caravan, which is still where they still call home today.

Victoria was adamant that she and James would not add to their six-person family despite James’ parents starting a new home in their caravan.

She kept her family’s plans a secret, saying, “While there is a firm NO on any baby making shenanigans going on in our little love pad, the same belief & hope for something we’ve built on our own is there.

It’ll be a journey, they say. A messy, chaotic, and mud-filled ride with only our boys and ourselves. And we are anxious. A possible alpaca will be born. What the hell, in for a penny and a half, and all that…

So please stay for the journey, lovely bunch, and if you have any advice, please send it to us.
