‘I saved over £200 by swapping my pricey skincare for this Boots K-beauty brand’

I tried out some of the key pieces from the popular K-beauty brand, which just launched at Boots, because Korean beauty is currently a big hot topic.

K-beauty is not a new trend, but Korean skincare is becoming increasingly popular this year thanks to consumers who are fans of its “glass skin” glow. A number of renowned brands have recently branched into mainstream stores, including the brand Beauty of Joseon, which is now available from Boots, and has already proven to be a huge hit. This is also now easier than ever to purchase here in the UK.

I avoided my tried-and-true skincare regimen and turned to some of Beauty of Joseon’s bestsellers, the majority of which cost around the £15 mark, because I couldn’t believe how glowing they made my skin look. What I would re-purchase is listed below.

This cooling face tool is essential in hot weather, and it instantly depuffed my tired eyes.

Charlotte Tilbury releases the “glow in a stick” product known as “amazing for dry or mature skin.”

Beauty of Joseon is the ideal example of this because Korean skincare products are all about hydratation and glowing when applied in multiple light layers. I used the £15 Beauty of Joseon Revive Eye Serum: Ginseng + Retinal, which feels cooling and refreshing, and is recommended if you’re trying to combat puffiness and dark circles, but is likely to have had little to no impact on dryness and fine lines over the long run.

Next up was a product I’d never really used before, but which I feel made the biggest different to my skin: an essence. Glow Replenishing Rice Milk, £15.50, is designed to be patted into the skin. It’s an excellent way to get extra hydration and radiance into the skin without piling on heavy layers, and I saw a noticeable glow from this. Our shopping writer Grace is also a fan, saying how one person actually stopped her in the street to compliment her glowing skin after using this.

I also tried a few serums from the £23 Beauty of Joseon Hanbang Serum Discovery Kit, which, although all lovely and light, I don’t really believe have enough anti-ageing ingredients for my late-30s skin (perhaps better suited to younger skin) needs. I believe it would be great for oily to combination skin after using Dynasty Cream, a moisturiser that costs just £21. It is currently sold in the Love Island villa and has a gel-cream texture.

My two favourite products(Image: Laura Mulley)

You should definitely check out Korean formula, which are typically high-factor but very light, and Beauty of Joseon’s are no exception if you normally dislike the feeling of greasy sunscreens on your face. In winter, I’d probably use Relief Sun: Rice + Probiotics SPF 50+, which is currently priced at £13.95, but Relief Sun Aqua-Fresh Rice + B5 SPF 50+, which feels like water and is best for oily skin.

I couldn’t believe how beautiful my skin looked after using this complete K-beauty regimen: it was glowing, fresh, and juicy. The Relief Sun Aqua-Fresh Rice + B5 SPF 50+ and the Glow Replenishing Rice Milk made the biggest difference, in my opinion. I’ll repurchase these, but I’d highly advise checking these out first if you’re thinking about trying the brand.

If I continued to follow this pattern, I would save a lot of money. The price of Austinus Bader The Face Mist, £76, Skin Rocks The Eye Cream, £65, Medik8 Liquid Peptides Advanced MP, £79, ALLSKIN|MED Barrier Defence Emulsion, £82, and Ultra Violette Future Fluid Superlight Mineral Skinscreen SPF50+, £38, which together totals a rather eye-watering £340. However, the total cost of these Beauty of Joseon products is about £80, which is a savings of about £260.

Singer Chris Brown Pleads Not Guilty In UK Assault Case

In a UK court on Friday, American R&amp member Chris Brown entered a not-guilty plea to a charge involving an alleged 2023 nightclub brawl.

Brown, 36, reacted to the charge in the London dock, saying, “Not guilty, ma’am,” while donning a dark suit, tie, and glasses.

Following his plea to allegedly attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent, the singer, who is currently on $5 million ($6.7 million) bail, waved to people in the public gallery as he left.

On October 26, 2026, a five to seven-day trial was scheduled to begin.

After being detained in Manchester’s northwestern city for almost a week in May, the singer was taken into custody. He was later released without bail.

If he doesn’t appear in court, he will forfeit the $5 million guarantee set out in his bail.

Additionally, he was given permission to continue his scheduled international tour, which kicked off on June 8 in Amsterdam.

The singer, who had a troubled relationship with Barbadian singer Rihanna, is currently touring in the UK with his Saturday, London, next date.

In connection with an assault where the victim was allegedly struck multiple times with a bottle before being pursued, punched, and kicked, Brown is accused of trying to commit grievous bodily harm with intent.

While Brown was on a UK tour, the alleged incident occurred at a nightclub in Hanover Square on February 19, 2023.

After he reportedly entered a private jet, police arrested him at a five-star hotel in Manchester on May 13.

Other bail conditions include that he must turn in his passport if he isn’t traveling.

Additionally, he is prohibited from visiting the nightclub where the alleged assault occurred or from speaking with the alleged victim, Abraham Diah, at a specific address that the court has approved.

Omololu Akinlolu, also known as HoodyBaby, co-defendant with Chris Brown, a rapper from the US, pleads not guilty to intentionally inflicting grievous bodily harm in a alleged London nightclub brawl in 2023. He leaves Southwark Crown Court in London on June 20, 2025. (Photo by CARLOS JASSO/AFP)

He is currently being detained along with co-defendant Omololu Akinlolu, a US citizen, with whom he is also being charged.

Akinlolu also agreed not to plead guilty to the same charge of intending to cause grievous bodily harm.

Additionally, both men are facing separate assault-related bodily harm charges.

On July 11, the court was informed that they would enter pleas to that charge.

A bottle, an offensive weapon, and Brown’s third offense are also brought against him in public.

The Grammy-winning singer is renowned for “Kiss, Kiss” and other songs from the 2000s.

With his rich R&amp, B voice, and later rap, he rose from a nearby church choir in Virginia to acclaim fame, but the abuse allegations have tarnished his reputation.

Liverpool agree £40m deal to sign Kerkez from Bournemouth

Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth has been signed for a $40 million contract by Liverpool.

After two seasons with the Cherries, the Hungary international, who is 21 years old, is expected to return to the Premier League.

Adrien Truffert has already been replaced by him at Bournemouth.

The Reds are close to signing Bayer Leverkusen attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz for a club-record £116 million deal in the wake of Liverpool’s acquisition of Kerkez.

Dutch international Jeremie Frimpong has also been signed for £29.5 million from the German club.

Before moving to AC Milan in Italy, the Serbian-born Kerkez started his senior career at the Hungarian side Gyor.

Before making a switch to Dutch side AZ Alkmaar in January 2022, he didn’t make a full season for the Serie A outfit.

In 52 appearances, he helped AZ Alkmaar finish fourth in the Dutch top flight in 2022-23 with five goals and seven assists.

Before being defeated by eventual champions West Ham, the Eredivisie side also advanced to the semi-finals of the 2022-23 Europa Conference League.

When Richard Hughes, the Cherries’ sporting director, left Liverpool for the Cherries in the summer of 2023, Kerkez took over the position.

He scored two goals and six assists in all 38 league games last season as Bournemouth finished ninth overall with a club-record 56 Premier League points.

Dominik Szoboszlai and Kerkez will join forces at Liverpool, who has made 23 appearances for Hungary.

Kostas Tsimikas and Andy Robertson have been linked with Atletico Madrid, but his future is uncertain.

What would Kerkez bring to Liverpool?

Nat Hayward, journalist for BBC Sport

Kerkez appears to be the ideal full-back for Liverpool in terms of the game.

The fundamentals of aggressive pressing, though in a more structured way, and trying to win the ball high up the pitch still apply, despite former manager Jurgen Klopp’s “heavy metal” style of fast-paced, high-pressing football having been adapted by his successor Arne Slot.

The 21-year-old recovered the ball 169 times last season, which is the fifth-most of any Premier League defenders and the most of any Liverpool defender. He also won the ball 11 times in the Cherries’ attacking third, which is the ninth-most defenders in the division and once more than any of his potential Reds team-mates.

The Hungary international recorded 34 chances from open play, which was his seventh most by a defender, and added five assists, which tied him for fourth overall in the Bournemouth team’s overall position.

Seen in sixth place among defenders, with 142 crosses, and eight big chances for the seventh.

No Liverpool defender completed more dribbles than Kerkez’s 22 as he passed into the final third 476 times, which is the 10th most of any Premier League defender.

‘Thithi president!’: Supporters rally for banned Ivorian opposition hopeful

Despite a heavy downpour and slippery roads, supporters of presidential candidate Tidjane Thiam poured into Abidjan’s streets in the thousands on Saturday to march on the offices of the Ivory Coast electoral commission.

Decked in the white and green colours of Thiam’s main opposition Democratic Party of Ivory Coast (PDCI), the demonstrators chanted his nickname – “Thithi president!” – in a show of support for a candidate now officially barred from the vote. Placards reading “There’s no Plan B!” flew high amid protest songs.

“We strongly denounce the arbitrary and unjustified removal of President Thiam, as well as other major opposition leaders,” PDCI’s executive secretary, Sylvestre Emmou, one of few people allowed through a large police barricade to submit a complaint to the commission, told his soaked compatriots. “This is unacceptable and dangerous for peace and democracy in our country,” he said.

The protests highlight rising tensions in West Africa’s second-biggest economy, ahead of the October general elections that many fear could lead to violence in a country with still-fresh memories of the 2011 election-related civil war.

At stake is Ivory Coast’s continued stability amid a regional security crisis, but a likely fourth-term bid by incumbent President Alassane Ouattara has concerned many voters and political rivals, alongside what critics say is the government’s targeted ban on opponents.

Ouattara’s strongest challenger, Thiam, was struck from a final list of candidates on June 4 after the electoral commission said he was ineligible to run because he’d automatically lost Ivorian citizenship when he took French citizenship in the 1980s.

Although Thiam gave up his French nationality to regain his Ivorian one in February, a court ruled in May that he was not technically Ivorian when he enrolled in the electoral register in 2022.

Thiam’s supporters accuse Ouattara, who has led since 2011, of clearing the way for a fourth term. The last elections in 2020 were boycotted by the opposition, which argued Ouattara had reached his term limits, handing him an easy victory. In the 2015 elections, Ouattara was a clear favourite.

Former President Laurent Gbagbo and his old right-hand man Charles Ble Goude have been struck off too for convictions related to the 2011 civil war. Ex-Prime Minister Guillaume Soro, who was convicted of fraud, was also removed.

Ouattara will suffer illegitimacy if he runs without those four, Sylvain N’Guessan, a politics professor at the University of Bondoukou, told Al Jazeera.

“He will be seen as a candidate who had to exclude all other serious candidates to impose himself. What relationship will such a president have with the other parties, with the voters?” he said.

A ‘new face’ in turbulent politics

Many Ivorians, particularly young voters, view businessman Thiam as a breath of fresh air and a departure from the divisive establishment politics that have seen power concentrated in the hands of a few.

At 62, he is two decades younger than Ouattara and is related to Felix Houphouet-Boigny, the first Ivorian prime minister. Thiam was the first Ivorian student to land a place at Paris’s prestigious Ecole Polytechnique in 1982, from where he was launched to top-flight firms like consulting giant McKinsey. In 1994, he returned home to take up a ministerial position that saw him launch several infrastructure projects. A military coup in 1999, however, cut short that career.

In 2015, he became the first African head of Swiss bank Credit Suisse but stepped down in 2019 after an espionage scandal: a colleague accused Thiam of spying on him, although a court later cleared him of wrongdoing. In 2022, Thiam returned to the Ivory Coast and the once-ruling PDCI party.

Thiam’s party promises a return to the economic development that flourished under Houphouet-Boigny, who is credited with the “Ivorian Miracle” or the rapid development that came after colonial rule.

Thiam has also promised to include everyone, regardless of ethnicity or religion.

“He presents as a new leader, a new face who could lead Cote d’Ivoire differently,” N’Guessan said, adding that young Ivorians were tired of faces like Ouattara’s and Gbagbo’s, who are associated with turbulent politics.

Critics say his international career means he’s out of touch locally, but Thiam claims he is nonetheless well-loved. In an interview with the BBC in April, he accused the government of specifically targeting him with a colonial-era law he said was rarely used. Thiam pointed to Ivorian-French footballers who hold dual nationalities and play for French clubs and the Ivorian national team.

“I don’t think anyone in Cote d’Ivoire believes that this is not a case of the government exploiting the legal system,” he said, referring to his removal based on nationality. “This government has been in power for 15 years. Does it deserve five more? For me, that’s what should be at the centre of the presidential campaign, not my passport,” Thiam said at the time.

Al Jazeera reached out to the Ivorian government for comment but did not hear back by the time of publication.

Away from identity politics

A day after Thiam’s supporters gathered in Abidjan, Ouattara’s ruling Rally of Houphouetists for Democracy and Peace (RHDP) members also rallied in Yopougon, the most populous suburb of Abidjan.

Banners reading “In Yopougon, our champion is ADO”, a reference to the president’s nickname, were stretched across a stage where senior party members extolled Ouattara. The gathering set the stage for the party’s grand congress on June 21-22, where Ouattara is expected to officially announce his candidacy.

“There is only one road – the road of President Alassane Ouattara,” former prime minister Patrick Achi declared to the gathered crowd.

Ouattara, 83, is rumoured to be half-Burkinabe. He was the target of inflammatory identity politics for years, with his rivals questioning his “Ivoirite” and enforcing laws that disqualified him from running. When he finally won elections in 2011, Gbagbo refused to hand over power, resulting in a civil war that killed some 3,000 people.

Ouattara has since amended the Ivorian constitution to allow presidential candidates with at least one Ivorian parent in a 2016 referendum. He has nurtured the country back from the brink into a flourishing economy, evident in the 7 percent average yearly growth recorded in the past decade.

Then in 2020, Outtara ran in and won elections. Critics and boycotting opposition said his third-term bid was unconstitutional while Outtara argued his mandate was reset by the new constitution. Violence was reported in some areas.

N’Guessan said Ivorians don’t have the appetite for the immense suffering of 2011, and warned that reviving identity politics by preventing Thiam from running once again is “dangerous”.
