Toto Wolff, the Mercedes team’s principal, claims that George Russell’s protest at Sunday’s Canadian Grand Prix was “petty” and “embarrassing” and that Max Verstappen, the four-time world champion, was at fault for it.

With four laps left before Lando Norris struck McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri’s car on the pit straight, making it Mercedes’ first win of the season as the race ended under the safety car.

The stewards rejected the protest, which was brought by Red Bull, alleging that Russell drove “erratically” behind the safety car and displayed “unsportsmanlike behavior.”

At the New York premiere of F1, starring Brad Pitt, Wolff said, “First of all, it took team Red Bull Racing two hours before they started the protest,” Wolff said.

It is “so small and petty.” They develop some odd clauses, or “clauses,” that they call. Because it’s so unbelievable, it was rejected, I suppose the FIA needs to look at that.

On the track, you know, you win and you lose. Like so many others they had in the past, that was a fair victory for us. And it’s completely embarrassing.

Christian Horner, a Red Bull exec who was also present at the film’s launch, said he had no regrets filing a complaint.

No, absolutely not. It’s a team’s right, really, to do that. We observed something that we didn’t believe to be accurate.

You have the option to present it to the stewards, according to the organization. There are definite no regrets in that.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff says Red Bull’s protest was “petty” and “embarrassing” as George Russell finished first ahead of four-time world champion Max Verstappen at Sunday’s Canadian Grand Prix.

Russell claimed Mercedes’ first win of the season as the race finished under the safety car, with Lando Norris having hit McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri’s car on the pit straight with four laps to go.

Red Bull lodged a protest, claiming Russell drove “erratically” behind the safety car and displayed “unsportsmanlike behaviour”, but it was rejected by the stewards.

“First of all, it took team Red Bull Racing two hours before they launched the protest, so that was in their doing,” Wolff told Sky Sports at the New York premiere of F1, starring Brad Pitt.

“It’s so petty and so small. They come up with some weird clauses, what they call clauses. I guess the FIA needs to look at that because it’s so far-fetched it was rejected.

“You know, you race, you win and you lose on track. That was a fair victory for us, like so many they had in the past. And it’s just embarrassing.”

Red Bull boss Christian Horner, also in attendance at the movie launch, suggested he had no regrets lodging a complaint.

“No, absolutely not. I mean, it’s a team’s right to do so. We saw something we didn’t think was quite right.

“You have the ability to put it in front of the stewards and so that’s what we chose to do. Absolutely no regrets in that.”

Victoria Beckham is “petrified” her son’s ex, Kim Turnbull, is going to lift the lid on the famous family’s “secrets”, according to reports. Kim, who split up with model, Romeo, recently, broke her silence yesterday after finding herself at the centre of the family’s feud.

Taking to Instagram with a defiant statement, Kim insisted she had never dated Brooklyn after it was reported that the hot sauce enthusiast was ‘concerned’ about the DJ’s motive for dating his younger brother amid whispers Brooklyn and Kim had dated when they were younger. However, Kim fired back, saying she was ’embarrassed by the lies’ and ‘can’t stay quiet any longer’, insisting: “I have never been romantically involved in ANY capacity with the person in question.”

Romeo’s mum, Victoria, is now said to be concerned that Kim might share private details about her time with the Beckham family, having been a big part of their inner circle – attending numerous family gatherings, and even David’s 50th birthday celebrations that Brooklyn and his wife, Nicola snubbed.

Speaking to Closer, a source said: “Just when Vic though the family drama couldn’t get any worse, Romeo’s split from Kim has poured more fuel on the fire. Not only was Romeo upset about the break-up, but they’ve heard whispers that Kim is hell bent on the world knowing the truth, given the allegations that she’s the reason the feud erupted in the first place.”

They continued: “Kim was privy to a lot of to a lot of personal details during her time with Romeo, including family secrets that Vic is now petrified she’s going to spill – not only to clear her name, but to boost her profile now she’s no longer tied to the Beckhams.”

On Monday, Kim spoke about the drama for the first time that has engulfed the Beckhams and cast a shadow over David’s knighthood announcement this weekend as his eldest son, Brooklyn, continues to ignore his achievement.

Taking to Instagram, newly-single Kim fired: “I’ve avoided speaking on this topic to prevent adding fuel to the fire, however it’s come to a point where I feel the need to address it so I can move on.”

She continued: “I will not continue to receive harassment or be embarrassed on the basis of lies, to fit a certain narrative.”

Seemingly addressing the Brooklyn rumours, Kim then clarified: “I have never been romantically involved in ANY capacity at ANY point with the person in question. Nothing between us has occurred further than a school friendship at age 16.

“I would like to remove myself from the ongoing conversation and set the record straight for the sake of everyone involved.”

Following the strongly-worded statement, Victoria is said to be feeling very “anxious” that Kim is going to set the record straight on the feud, which has been plaguing the Beckhams for month.

Claiming the artist formerly known as Posh Spice wanted to have NDAs (non disclosure agreement) “put in place” for her sons’ partners, the source said: “Vic’s feeling very anxious about it. It’s her worst fears imagined and the exact reason why she tried so hard to have NDAs put in place for her her sons’ significant others – which they all fought her so hard and refused to have them do.

“Now she’s petrified they’re going to pay the price and that Kim won’t hold back in setting the record straight, which she [Victoria] fears will only make the feud worse.”

The Mirror has contacted reps for Victoria and Kim on this story.

‘I spoke to Kim Woodburn before her death and one comment off camera stunned me’

Kim Woodburn has tragically died aged 83, following a short illness. The Celebrity Big Brother legend garnered a reputation during her career as a no nonsense commentator, not afraid to attack anyone she felt wronged by.

So when I had the opportunity to interview her at the end of last year, I immediately told my colleague I was nervous. With some tricky questions in place that included bullying claims, I prepared myself to be in Kim’s firing line. It turns out nothing was off limits and, as expected, she had a lot to say about multiple famous faces who, she claimed, had rubbed her up the wrong way over the years.

In particular, the 84-year-old admitted she still wasn’t a fan of Coleen Nolan, following a fall out between them on Celebrity Big Brother in 2017. At the time, Kim accused Coleen and some of their fellow housemates of bullying, though her co-stars denied this was the case.

She and Coleen went on to have a heated exchange on Loose Women after the series ended, which resulted in Kim shouting and storming off of the set live on-air.

Another enemy of Kim’s was Phillip Schofield, who she famously argued with on This Morning while discussing her experience on the reality show. Reflecting on this moment with me, she went on to spill that she also wasn’t a fan of his former co-star Holly Willoughby.

As part of her rant, she shared: “When I was interviewed by him he was rude, he was opinionated, he was on the edge of the sofa looking at me. [He said] Well, why did you go in?’ I mean, that’s not what a presenter does.”

She went on to say about Holly: “What did she ever do on the show? She was 14 years of Phillip Schofield, money for old rope, she didn’t do anything. She sat there when he was arguing with people, or questioning people on something serious and when it turned out, what did Holly do?

“Or when he was rude to someone, did she once ever say in 14 years, ‘Phillip, I think you’re wrong you know, no, come on’. Not once!”.

I was later invited back for another chat with her. This time around, she ranted even more, taking issue with the likes of Rebekah Vardy and Coleen Rooney.

But it was what she said after the interview ended that has stuck by me. Not realising I was still on the call, the reality star told the PR that my colleague and I were “really nice”, something I never thought I’d hear from Kim.

It shows that despite her tough-talking demeanour, the much-loved TV star had a softer side behind the glare of the cameras. Following the news of her death, many have paid tribute to the former How Clean Is Your House? star on social media.

A statement from her manager reads: “It is with immense sadness that we let you know our beloved Kim Woodburn passed away yesterday following a short illness. Kim was an incredibly kind, caring, charismatic and strong person.

The How Clean Is Your House star tragically died on Monday, and her beloved husband of 46 years, Peter, with who she lived in their Cheshire home, is “heartbroken” over the loss of his soulmate.

Kim and Peter tied the knot in 1979 after 4 years of dating. This was Kim’s second marriage after her first marriage to Kenneth Davies ended in divorce in 1975. Kim and Peter, who didn’t have any children together, spoke fondly of one another in candid chats and interviews.

Kim also openly discussed aspects of their personal life in a now-deleted Instagram Live session, where she shared that they maintained an active sex life, stating, “I get it three times a week. My husband is a very active man. He is a beast. A beast”, as reported in the Daily Star.

Peter has also occasionally featured alongside Kim on television as they both appeared on Channel 4’s A Place in the Sun: Winter Sun in 2016. They were on the hunt to purchase a holiday home in the Costa del Sol to use during the winter months to escape the cold weather in the UK.

Peter also spoke up in defence of his wife when she appeared on Celebrity Big Brother in 2017. Kim found herself in a heated argument with some of her housemates, but Peter said she was just being her ‘fiery self’.

Speaking to new! Magazine at the time, he said: “She doesn’t suffer fools and always tells it as she sees it. There’s no half-measure with Kim. It’s either full-on love, sympathy and laughter or if it’s an argument, it’s going to be a full-on, blow your brains out one.” She eventually finished in third place on the show after Jedward and the winner, Coleen Nolan.

A representative shared the sad news of her passing, labelling her “an incredibly kind, caring, charismatic and strong person”.

How will Russia respond to the Israel-Iran conflict?

After Israel launched what it described as “preventive” attacks on Iranian military and nuclear targets last week, Russia’s position appeared clear.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Moscow condemned what it called “unprovoked military strikes against a sovereign UN member state”, referring to Iran.

The Kremlin, whose partnership with Iran dates back many years, has urged a diplomatic solution to the crisis.

Since the hostilities began on Friday, more than 220 people have been killed in Israeli attacks on Iran while 24 people have been killed in Iranian counterstrikes.

Both Iran and Russia shared an ally in former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and intervened on his behalf in the Syrian war until his eventual defeat late last year. Iran has supplied Russia with Shahed kamikaze drones to be used on Ukrainian targets, and last year, there were reports that Russia received hundreds of Fath-360 ballistic missiles from Iran, which are known to be accurate at short range.

“Of course, Russia should be friends with Iran because, in politics and in life, everything is very simple,” hawkish Russian TV personality Sergey Mardan commented after the latest Middle East crisis escalated. “If you have an enemy and your enemy has partners and allies, his partners and allies are automatically your enemies.

“There are no illusions about this, and there can’t be any. Since Israel is a key ally of the United States; … of course, we are interested in the weakening of Israel and helping its adversaries.”

While Russia might be sympathetic to Iran, the extent of their relationship should not be overstated, said independent Middle East specialist Ruslan Suleymanov, who is based in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Russia now manufactures its own Shahed drones under licence, so its own combat capabilities are unlikely to be affected by the Iran-Israel conflict, he said.

“The Iranians, in turn, expected more from Russia. They expected a much larger amount of aircraft, military, space technologies, not to mention nuclear,” Suleymanov told Al Jazeera.

“But Russia did not rush to share because it is very important for Moscow to maintain a balance in the Middle East and maintain relations with Israel. And if Russia begins to supply arms to Iran, no one excludes the fact that these weapons can be directed at Israel, and the Kremlin does not want this.”

Although a strategic partnership agreement was signed between Moscow and Tehran this year, Suleymanov noted it does not mean Russia is obliged to step up to defend Iran.

“It is obvious that at any vote of the UN Security Council, Russia, along with China, will stand on the side of the Islamic Republic [of Iran],” he said. “However, we should not expect anything more.”

While the Western-oriented liberal opposition has been largely supportive of Israel, Russia is treading a fine line to uphold its ties with the administration of President Benjamin Netanyahu.

“One monkey got his grenade taken away. We’re waiting for the other one,” exiled Russian politician Dmitry Gudkov wrote on social media, referring to the Iranian and Russian leadership, respectively.

“Does Israel (or any country, for that matter) have the legal right to try to knock a nuclear grenade out of the hands of a big monkey playing with it next to it? And one that constantly growls in your direction? I think the answer is obvious.”

Russia’s relations with Israel are complicated.

Although the Soviet Union initially supported the creation of the state of Israel, it soon threw its weight behind Arab nations and backed the Palestinian cause.

Today, Russia refuses to blacklist Hamas as a “terrorist organisation” although its support for Palestine is balanced by its relationship with Israel. Israel, meanwhile, is concerned with the safety and survival of Russia’s Jewish community.

Regarding Syria, Russia and Israel shared an understanding whereby Moscow tacitly overlooked Israeli operations targeting its ally, Iranian-backed Hezbollah. Israel, for its part, avoided antagonising or sanctioning Moscow and arming Ukraine. However, the collapse of al-Assad’s regime has changed this calculus.

“Russia and Israel, by and large, proceed from different interests in Syria,” observed Alexey Malinin, founder of the Moscow-based Center for International Interaction and Cooperation and a member of the Digoria Expert Club.

“If Russia had the goal of ensuring the safety of Syrian citizens, ensuring the stability of legitimate power, then Israel sets itself the goal of maximally protecting itself from potential threats from Syria, not paying attention to the legality and legitimacy of such decisions. Therefore, Israel calmly went beyond the buffer zone on the Golan Heights and de facto occupied the territory of Syria after the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime.”

“It was really important for Russia to have contact with Israel, being in Syria, because without interaction with Tel Aviv, it was very difficult to carry out any manoeuvres on Syrian territory,” Suleymanov added. “But now such a need simply does not exist. Russia does not require any close coordination with [Israel].”

Still, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Netanyahu have in the past enjoyed a friendly relationship, even being spotted at a ballet performance together in 2016.

Russia the powerbroker?

Some analysts believe the Israel-Iran crisis provides Putin with an opportunity to flex his diplomatic muscle.

“Vladimir Putin has already offered mediation, and Russia is objectively one of the platforms most open to compromise due to constructive relations with both countries,” Malinin stated.

However, Suleymanov said, the Kremlin’s influence over the Middle East has waned since the change of power in Syria and it already has its hands full.

“Russia itself needs intermediaries in Ukraine,” he said.

“The situation in the Middle East will not directly affect the war in Ukraine. But for the Kremlin, it is undoubtedly beneficial that the attention of the world community, starting with the West, is now diverted from Ukraine. Against this background, Putin can move on to a further offensive in Ukraine.”

Malinin acknowledged that Western support for Kyiv could drop in the short term “in favour of Israel”.
