Ruth Buzzi, a beloved character from 1970s television, has sadly passed away at the age of 88. A heartfelt message shared to her official Facebook page, which revealed she passed away on Monday in Texas, confirmed the news.

Buzzi had been fighting Alzheimer’s privately since 2012 when she was struck blind in 2022.

Ruthie left us at home yesterday evening while she was snoozing peacefully. She had been in hospice care for ten years and had a stroke in 2022 as a result of her diagnosis of Alzheimer’s ten years earlier, according to a Facebook message from her family.

In the groundbreaking NBC sketch comedy series Rowan &amp, Martin’s Laugh-In, which ran from 1968 to 1973, Buzzi, who was adored for her sharp wit and unforgettable characters, made her biggest impression on the small screen.

In addition to her role on the show, where she starred alongside future Hollywood legend Goldie Hawn, she received five Emmy nominations and five Golden Globes for her scene-stealing performances.

Ruth contributed her distinctive comedic voice to a number of well-known television programs, including Days of Our Lives, The Carol Burnett Show, Alvin and the Chipmunks, The Berenstain Bears, The Pink Panther, and the timeless 1976 family film Freaky Friday.

On the road, Buzzi’s journey to comedy stardom began in the most traditional way. She first gained notoriety when she was 19 when she was touring with crooner Rudy Vallee during a summer break in college in Westerly, Rhode Island.

After graduating from college, she packed up for New York City and realized her dreams. She quickly rose to prominence in the first of nearly 20 musical revues she would perform across the East Coast.

Her television debut was in 1964 with The Garry Moore Show, followed by a performance on The Entertainers in 1965.

With additional guest appearances on Night Gallery and Here’s Lucy, Buzzi’s quirky charm quickly caught the attention of casting managers, earning her recurring roles in shows like That Girl and The Monkees.

Her real breakthrough was in 1968 when she joined the Rowan &amp, Martin’s Laugh-In ensemble.

We laughed, and laughed, and laughed, and laughed, Buzzi once said in response to the incident. I never even imagined going to work. It was pure, spontaneous fun.

She co-starred in Laugh-In for the entire six-season run, creating an unmissable cast of eccentric characters, including the feisty Gladys Ormphby and the tipsy Doris Swizzler.

She reprised her comedic legacy with roles in animated classics like Alvin and the Chipmunks and The Berenstain Bears on shows like The Lost Saucer and Whatever Turns You On.

We can’t just call him Barry because of how unique Seven is, Anne-Marie said. Before the suggestion was bleeped out, I’m not even sure if it will be the name because it’s so odd but we’ve got the name ***.

The singer also revealed that she had gestational diabetes while pregnant, telling the hosts she had to give up being a vegetarian because of her intense pregnancy.

Anne-Marie stated earlier about her pregnancy’s “hardest year.” The Friends singer’s reflection on 2024 as she reflected on the turbulent past year in an Instagram post from December last year.
