Trump orders rebuilding and reopening of notorious Alcatraz prison in US

Alcatraz, a notorious federal prison based on a small island in California, has been closed for more than 60 years, according to President Donald Trump, who has ordered officials to rebuild and reopen it.

Trump stated in a statement on his Truth Social website on Sunday that he is “directing the Bureau of Prisons, along with the Department of Justice, FBI, and Homeland Security, to reopen a significantly expanded and rebuilt ALCATRAZ” to house the country’s “most ruthless and violent Offenders.”

The Republican’s most recent effort to change the conditions in which federal prisoners and immigration detainees are housed.

His administration has been tampering with the judiciary after using an 18th-century law, which was only used during the wartime, to deport people it claims are criminals and gang members without due process.

Trump has also repeatedly argued against the legality of transferring US citizens who have committed violent crimes to the CECOT prison in El Salvador.

Trump, who was speaking to reporters after spending a weekend in Florida, said reopening Alcatraz was “just an idea I’ve had” as a result of his outcry against “radicalized judges,” who have argued that deported detainees are treated with respect.

He claimed that it represents “the rule of law and order.”

The president made the comments after an interview where he claimed he “didn’t know” whether Americans are entitled to the same level of legal protections as Americans as mandated by the US Constitution.

The Fifth Amendment of the Constitution guarantees “due process of law,” which refers to a person’s legal protections when facing a criminal charge. Additionally, the 14th Amendment states that no state is able to “deny equal protection of the laws to anyone within its jurisdiction.”

Not a serious suggestion, in my opinion.

Given its location, frigid waters, and strong currents, Alcatraz was hailed as the US’s safest prison.

Despite the fact that five of the prisoners are listed as “missing and presumed drowned,” none of their successful escapes from Alcatraz were ever officially documented during the 29 years it was in operation. Overall, 36 men made 14 different escape attempts.

Due to high repair and supply costs and deteriorating infrastructure, the prison, which has been the subject of numerous films, was shut down in 1963. Everything had to be brought by boat.

According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) website, its operation cost nearly three times as much as any other federal prison.

At a time when the BOP has been closing prisons due to similar infrastructure issues, making significant investments would be required to bring the facility up to modern standards.

The National Park Service maintains and designated Alcatraz Island as a significant tourist destination.

The prison’s reopening after so long was questioned by former California Democrat Nancy Pelosi, whose district includes the island.

Naomi Campbell is reportedly banned from the Met Gala and the iconic supermodel will be unable to attend tonight’s star-studded event after she ‘shot herself in the stiletto’

It’s almost time for the biggest event of the year in the fashion calendar but one iconic supermodel won’t be attending the Met Gala this evening. Naomi Campbell is reportedly blacklisted from the prestigious event thanks to getting on the wrong side of Vogue editor Anna Wintour.

This evening’s annual gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York will see celebrity attendees attempt to honour the follow the theme of Superfine: Tailoring Black Style. Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, and Pharrell Williams are co-chairs alongside Met Gala chief Anna for this year’s bash.

But despite attending the event 17 times in the past since 1990, and being a trailblazing, iconic Black supermodel, fans of Naomi won’t get to see her on the red carpet tonight as A-listers honour the artistry and cultural influence of Black fashion

Anna and Naomi came to blows last year at a New York Fashion Week ceremony for Harlem’s Fashion Row. Vogue boss Anna took a swipe at Naomi’s tardiness as she presented the model with an award, telling the audience: “I am a very punctual person, and I have the honour of presenting tonight to someone who is often late.”

Anna gave up on waiting for Naomi to show up and Harper’s Bazaar editor-in-chief Samira Nasr was asked to present with the Fashion Icon Award instead. As she finally accepted her honour on stage, Naomi savagely told a shocked crowd: “It wasn’t my choice to have the other lady, I’d much rather have this one.”

Sources claim that Anna hasn’t forgotten the incident and plans to assert her dominance in the fashion world by making sure Naomi is blacklisted from the Met Gala.

“Naomi shot herself in the stiletto with that comment,” a source revealed, adding, “You don’t throw shade at the queen of fashion and still expect to walk her red carpet. Anna doesn’t forget – or forgive. It’s no coincidence. If Anna wants you out, you’re out. Simple as that.”

The source further disclosed to The Sun: “Naomi’s been a Met staple for decades, so her absence from the list hasn’t gone unnoticed. Everyone’s whispering – and it’s Anna’s way of reminding who runs the show.”

Interestingly, Naomi recently revealed in a YouTube video that the last Met Gala would be her final appearance. Meanwhile, fashion insiders point to Anna Wintour’s influence as the driving force behind the rumoured ban.

In a candid clip to her 533,000 YouTube followers, she revealed: “This is my last Met,” while offering a sneak peek into her prep for the glamorous 2024 bash. As she addressed her audience, the runway queen faced playful jests from her team who quipped: “Famous last words.”

Nonetheless, Naomi seemed resolute in her decision to make this her final appearance. She continued, “It is my last Met! I can’t, I’m too old. It’s too much for me – the anxiety. I don’t know what number this is for me, I think it could be number 20 or 21. Can you imagine?”

The Mirror has previously contacted Anna and Naomi for comment.

Australia’s Albanese says he had ‘warm’ call with Trump after election win

After his , Labor Party’s decisive victory over the weekend, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has claimed to have had a “warm” conversation with US President Donald Trump about trade and other issues.

In a congratulatory phone call made by the US president, Albanese claimed the two leaders discussed tariffs and the AUKUS nuclear submarine partnership with the media in Canberra on Monday.

Albanese said, “It was a very warm discussion about the friendship that is so important between our two countries.”

“With the president, I’ve had three conversations.” Although I won’t go into all of his personal comments, I found them to be very kind and generous with his compliments on me. He expressed his desire to work with me in the future and was fully aware of the outcome.

After winning a thumping victory in the federal election on Saturday, which was dominated by cost-of-living concerns and the possibility of Trump’s trade war, Albanese made the comments.

After running for at least 85 seats in the 151-member House of Representatives, Albanese’s center-left Labor far outperformed expectations.

Dutton and his Coalition lost all of their seats in the election, with partial results showing it to be ahead of the opposition in just 40 seats.

As part of Trump’s so-called “reciprocal” duties on dozens of trade partners, Australia, one of the country’s closest allies, has received a 10% tariff.

Trump has put a&nbsp, baseline tariff of 10% on almost all imports since early April, but his administration has been putting off the majority of his double-digit tariffs until July.

NI great McParland left mark on club and international stages

Peter McParland was one of the all-time greats of Northern Ireland football, who also made his mark in English League football with Aston Villa.

The County Down native, who died on Sunday aged 91, is his country’s record goalscorer at World Cup finals, having scored five in Sweden in 1958.

He was the last surviving member of that Northern Ireland 1958 World Cup squad, which reached the quarter-final stage.

McParland won both FA Cup and League Cup winners’ medals with Villa.

He holds a unique place in English football history as the first player in the game to score in and win both English major domestic knockout finals.

Born in Newry, McParland was spotted playing for Dundalk in the League of Ireland by Aston Villa manager George Martin, who signed him for a fee in the region of £3,500.

The outside left spent the majority of his career at the Midlands club, while his international career spanned nine years from 1954-62.

A fine header and striker of the ball, he is regarded as one of the greatest players to represent both Aston Villa and Northern Ireland.

He scored twice in the FA Cup final against Manchester United in 1957 but also became involved in a controversial incident in which he shoulder-charged (at the time a legitimate form of challenge) the United keeper Ray Wood after only six minutes, leaving him unconscious with a broken cheekbone.

McParland’s goals were remembered as examples of his all-round abilities as a player, showcasing his diving header and volleying techniques.

He scored 22 league goals to help Villa win the Second Division title in 1960 and then won a League Cup winners’ medal in 1961.

The Northern Irishman was on the scoresheet for the second leg of the 1961 League Cup final, when Villa overturned a 2-0 deficit against Rotherham United to win the second encounter between the sides 3-0 at Villa Park and become the winners of the first Football League Cup, McParland’s extra-time winner proving decisive.

He subsequently joined Wolverhampton Wanderers for £35,000 in January 1962, scoring 10 goals in 21 games during his one season with the club.

His final English League club was Plymouth Argyle, followed by a spell with non-league Worcester City, but in 1965 he was recruited to play for Inter-Roma FC of the Eastern Canadian Professional Soccer League and then turned out for Atlanta Chiefs of the North American Soccer League in 1967 and 1968.

McParland won the NPSL Championship with the Chiefs in 1967.

He ended his career as player-manager of Irish League club Glentoran, where he spent three seasons, including a league championship success in 1970.

On the international stage, McParland scored 10 goals in 34 appearances, including those five goals at Sweden ’58 to help propel his team into the quarter-finals, where a team by then decimated by injuries lost 4-0 to France.

His impressive haul at the finals included one goal in a 3-1 win over Argentina, two in a 2-2 draw with West Germany and another couple in a 2-1 success against Czechoslovakia.

His Northern Ireland career had begun in style as the then 19-year-old bagged a double on his debut in a World Cup qualifying win over Wales in Wrexham in the 1953-54 season.

Following Billy Bingham’s death in 2022, he became the last surviving member of the Northern Ireland squad from that memorable 1958 campaign.

President Tinubu To Meet GenCos Leaders Over N4tn Power Sector Debt

Over the N4 trillion debt in the power sector, President Bola Tinubu will meet with the CEOs of the power-generating companies.

Following Tuesday’s high-stakes discussions between Adelabu and the chairmen of the Generating GenCos in Abuja, Bolaji Tunji, the Special Adviser, Strategic Communications and Media Relations, issued a statement to the Minister of Power, Bolaji Tunji, on Sunday.

He claimed that the government’s intervention is intended to stop the country’s power infrastructure from crashing out right away.

The minister assured GenCos executives in the statement that the government would prioritize making significant payments out of the N4tn debt while reimbursing the money with other debt instruments.

He claimed that a meeting between President Tinubu and the leadership of GenCos would make this suggestion.

“A sizable portion of the debt needs to be paid in cash,” the statement states. Let’s say we make a sizable deposit, then request a promissory note as a debt instrument to cover the remainder.

He used financial instruments, such as promissory notes, to guarantee the payment of the outstanding balance in six months.

“We acknowledge the urgency of this issue. Adelabu stated that the government would meet with GenCos leadership to discuss the matter and that the government would work with them to stabilize the sector and stop further crises.

Col. Sani Bello, the chairman of Mainstream Energy Solutions and the chairman of the Association of Power Generating Companies (APGA), who had earlier raised the alarm about the sector’s dire state, citing the N4tn debt as a pressing threat to operations, as the head of the GenCoS.

He also reaffirmed that GenCos were unable to secure loans or maintain infrastructure due to liquidity issues. He argued that the entire power ecosystem could collapse without immediate intervention.

This is a national emergency, according to Kola Adesina, the chairman of Egbin Power and First Independent Power Limited. Power is everything, including hospitals, homes, and industries. We can’t afford to see the sector fail.

Adelabu pledged to carry out reforms to reduce operational bottlenecks as well as to pay off the government’s role in the sector’s struggles. He urged Nigerians to adopt cost-reflective tariffs in order to fully liberalize the power sector.

Citizens are required to pay the appropriate price for energy consumed. Nigerians who are economically disadvantaged will continue to receive targeted subsidies from the Federal Government. He argued that we must grasp that subsidies cannot be resisted indefinitely and that public awareness campaigns must be conducted to encourage compliance.

APGC Power CEO Dr. Joy Ogaji went into great detail about the systemic issues that plague GenCos, including persistent late payments, unpredictable gas prices, and volatile foreign exchange rates.

She noted that maintenance budgets and loan repayments were hampered by the naira’s drop from 157/$ in 2013 to 1,600/$ in 2014 (nbsp).

While remaining patriotic, she claimed that “genCos have borne unsustainable risks from grid failures to unproductive taxes.”

The minister gave recommendations for ensuring that the sector’s transition to sustainability, including regulatory reviews to lower levies and promote market stability.
