Canelo Alvarez beats Scull to reclaim undisputed super-middleweight title

With his unanimous decision victory over William Scull and his return to the IBF super middleweight championship, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez has re-unified the division. He will now face Terence Crawford, who was previously welterweight champion.

As the Mexican suffered his first professional boxing loss on Sunday, Scull, who had a height advantage over Alvarez, was unable to find a solution to his methodical stalking and effective body blows.

It’s a dull fight for me, I thought. Scull was merely attempting to survive, not to win. After all three judges gave him the victory (115-112, 116-112, 119-109), Alvarez declared in his post-fight interview, “I detest these kinds of fights.”

Alvarez has won the 168-pound title twice and was stripped of the IBF strap last year after choosing to fight Edgar Berlanga over Scull, the sanctioning body’s top-ranked competitor.

Scull struggled to avoid Alvarez’s constant assault early on, as the Mexican landed powerful body blows in the second and fourth rounds, temporarily putting him off balance.

In the fifth round, Alvarez continued to stalk him after coming off the ground with a right uppercut and pushing him back before countering him with a counter.

After Scull caught him with another right hand, Alvarez’s corner warned him to “don’t let this guy get bigger and more confident,” before he responded with body shots at the end of the sixth round.

In the seventh round, Alvarez landed several combinations to the body and landed Scull with a lead left hook close to the ropes.

Alvarez continued to perform body-punches throughout the fight, allowing only six shots from Scull, who claimed the 63rd victory of his professional career.

Alvarez, 34, improved to 63-2-2 with 39 knockouts on his Saudi debut, continuing his tradition of fighting during the Cinco de Mayo festival weekend in Mexico.

The Mexican said he was anticipating a fight with Crawford in Las Vegas if he lost to him.

“I like to share the ring with that kind of fighter because Crawford is one of the best out there.” He declared, “It’s my pleasure.

American Crawford, who defeated Errol Spence Jr. in a welterweight match in 2023 to become the undisputed champion, declared he was prepared to face Alvarez as they squared off in the ring.

“I’ll demonstrate to the world what greatness looks like,” Crawford said.

In February, Alvarez and Saudi Arabia’s Riyadh Seasons Promotion signed a four-fight contract.

As part of Saudi Arabia’s oil-funded expansion into the sport, which has drawn criticism for “sportswashing” its poor human rights record, the kingdom has recently invested money in boxing competitions.

Solskjaer on Besiktas, Man Utd, Maguire & McTominay

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer bounces in a space that Besiktas has reserved for our interview that is as light and airy.

“I came here to get away from people like you”, he laughs, explaining the joke to club officials through his Turkish interpreter.

His attitude is jovial and relaxed.

Solskjaer recalls his shock at the sale of Scott McTominay and his concern over what is happening to his “family” at Old Trafford over the course of 30 minutes. He is 2, 000 miles away from his spiritual home in Manchester and 1,700 miles away from his actual home in Norway.

“Hard to watch United’s struggles”

Getty Images

It is a significant game. In order to maintain their chances of a third-place finish, which could include a place in the Europa League play-off if the Turkish Cup final is won, Belarus needs to place itself in the second qualifying round.

“That’s the deal I have made”, Solskjaer says. It is “more significant than a few extra dollars,” he said. The players get an extra week of vacation in the summer if we place third.

Fenerbahce are chasing the third – and currently dominant – Istanbul team, Galatasaray, for the title. With only five games left, they are five points clear heading into the weekend. They can’t afford to slack off. Who knows what Mourinho has in store to turn the situation his way.

For the first time since losing his job at Manchester United in October 2021, Solskjaer has agreed to speak for an extended period of time to BBC Sport in this context. The Norwegian paid the price for regression the following year after finishing second, like Mourinho did before him.

Besiktas are very much his club now. But he never gets bored with Old Trafford’s events.

He claims that “Man United is my family and will always be a part of me.”

“In football, you don’t feel sorry for anyone because we are privileged, absolutely 100% privileged to be able to work in clubs like this.

“It’s difficult to watch because your family is struggling,” I say. Looking at the table at the weekend is never easy.

He is talking with incredulity about the fact United, at the time of this meeting, are 14th in the Premier League.

After falling to Watford 4-1, he was dismissed and placed seventh. In terms of goal difference, they had been third two months prior, trailing Chelsea.

But a terrible run of results, including a record 5-0 home defeat by Liverpool and 2-0 loss to Manchester City at Old Trafford where the scoreline massively flattered United, meant Solskjaer knew what was coming as the Watford debacle unfolded.

He has been waiting for a while before coming back. Besiktas: Why?

” You have not been here long enough, “he says with a smile.

The club is fantastic, they say. Without doing anything, I spoke to a lot. This was the only one I spoke to where I looked back afterwards and thought ‘ I wish I was there ‘ because there is so much potential.

You think the club’s values about integrity and community service are in line with your identity and culture, and you think so. We were Turkey’s first team to play abroad. It is very similar to Man United in that sense. When I was there, it only made me think of Man United.

‘ Maguire, Fernandes &amp, Lindelof only players I heard from ‘

Solskjaer tried to instill the “look after everyone” mentality that he had come to know from Sir Alex Ferguson’s time at United.

After receiving an SOS call from then-executive chairman Ed Woodward in December 2018, he immediately returned to United’s Carrington training facility.

Woodward wanted Solskjaer to bring a smile back to the face of a club that had turned toxic as Mourinho’s tenure drew to a close amid rancour and recrimination.

The new boss used to distribute chocolate bars to employees during his own playing days. The first recipient was dearly cherished receptionist Kath Phipps. Solskjaer flew in for Phipps ‘ funeral in January 2025. He then proceeded to the wake, which had a large number of the old guard members.

Solskjaer and many others felt the disconnect between the current administration and the past, as did Solskjaer.

We meet a day after United have beaten Atletico Bilbao to plant one foot into the Europa League final. Given his knowledge of the club, the advice he could offer, and the elevated position he holds from his playing days, which extends far beyond a single – iconic – goal at the Nou Camp, his excitement for players he knows well comes with a shocking revelation.

Harry [Maguire] has always been a fighter and a leader, Solskjaer claims.

“I was never in doubt when I signed him and he walked in the door he would be captain for us.

Bruno [Fernandes] has a second captain in him. They are both distinguished people. I was so happy for them last night.

Since I left, those two and Victor [Lindelof] are probably the only people I have heard from in the club. You want them to succeed.

He doesn’t say it – and wouldn’t because by his nature he is not one to take cheap shots and he will never alter the fundamentals he took from his parents and has tried to pass on as a husband and father – but the lack of communication hurts.

When he walks across from the summer house to the main building to get his lunch, a few minutes later, he displays an example of his values.

How does one sell a McTominay?

Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay Getty Images

The next Solskjaer game has a strong Manchester United undercurrent.

Working with him at Besiktas is former United goalkeeping coach Richard Hartis and Tom Green, who left his job at United’s senior performance analyst in February to take on the head of analysis role at the Turkish club.

Former United midfielder Sofyan Amrabat, who Solskjaer knows well in Fred, the Brazilian half of United’s once-for-once “McFred” axis, along with Scott McTominay, is playing for Mourinho.

Talking about this gives him the chance to reflect on the hiring and sales decisions his former club made, including allowing McTominay to join Napoli.

“Scott and Fred together, they were lads you would put your hat on every day to give 100%”, Solskjaer says.

“Hopefully it’s a bad night for Mourinho,” Mourinho said.

Ole Gunner Solskjaer and Jose Mourinho Getty Images

Solskjaer assesses the work ahead of him in a pragmatic way. It appears that many of Ruben Amorim’s difficulties are comparable to those Ruben Amorim is facing at United from a distance.

A win in the Europa League might be all that Amorim needs to win in order to get some more time. It is something United came within a missed David de Gea penalty of achieving when Solskjaer’s team were beaten by Unai Emery’s Villarreal in the 2021 final.

Everyone is aware of how important it is to give a team what they want it to look, Solskjaer said.

“But you must handle it as best you can, not as you would like.” There are things I want my team to do that this one can’t. A challenging financial period has arrived. We have used money, though perhaps not as wisely.

I point out that is an observation I have heard about another club close to his heart. While Solskjaer is about to respond, he checks on himself.

“Yes . But that’s, you know when you……. Actually, he said, “I don’t need to say that.”

“Recruitment is probably the most crucial aspect of football,” says coach.

” You need the structures right and you need to get the right people in.

It’s challenging to create balance in a team you want to see when you manage two, three, four, or five different managers’ players. Not too many people get it, but everyone else is aware that you need consistency and patience to succeed.

Solskjaer has not spoken to Mourinho since his arrival in Turkey and says he is looking forward to meeting him again.

I bring up their argument in April 2021, the day before Mourinho was fired by Tottenham, when the Portuguese publicly claimed Son Heung-min had cheated to prevent a United goal from being allowed to be scored.

The Norwegian was chided at the time, “I would not feed my son if he behaved that way.” Mourinho’s response was classic: “Sonny is very lucky his father is a better person than Ole. You must provide for your children every day, even if you must steal.

Solskjaer chuckles, “I remember that one.” “You look after your own team.

He obviously has all the charisma, and I don’t believe any of us have changed much since we’ve made this progress.

“It will be good to see him again, and I’m hoping nothing else will make headlines but the team and the football that is played.”

Besiktas beat Galatasaray on 29 March but have won just once in four games since.

Solskjaer is aware of the stadium’s white-hot atmosphere.

Gala showed that there is nothing better when you’re at home and win these games, he said.

“If you are at home and you don’t win, there is nothing worse.

Moments determine football, they say. As you can see from last night [Thursday], Victor saved one of his chances from the goal line on one of two massive chances. Then it all changes.

“Football has such a slim chance of winning or losing.” Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than to be good.

Today’s horoscope for May 4 as Pisces learns to trust their intuition

Cancer gets caught up in daydreams as a result of today’s horoscope for May 4 as Scorpio opens up communication.

Find out what’s written in the stars with our astrologer Russell Grant(Image: Daily Record/GettyImages)

It’s Sunday, and one star sign lets out their feelings, while another finds themselves in a bad mood .

There are 12 zodiac signs – Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces – and the horoscopes for each can give you the lowdown on what your future holds, be it in work, your love life, your friends and family or more.

These daily forecasts have been compiled by astrologer Russell Grant, who has been reading star signs for over 50 years. From Aries through to Pisces, here’s what today could bring for your horoscope – and what you can do to be prepared.

Aries (Mar 21 – Apr 20)

Your financial situation is starting to improve, which will make you feel more at ease and secure. This newfound stability might make people want to spend money on fashionable or expensive goods. You might also be able to purchase and sell used art or other items and make some money.

Taurus (Apr 21 – May 21)

You won’t be as close to your expectations as you anticipated, especially if you have a partner or someone who is close. Try to avoid having a negative impact on their employment or relationships elsewhere. They might need to work extra hours or offer emotional support to a friend. You trust them when you give them some space.

Gemini (May 22 – June 21)

Your mood will improve when you spend time with friends. It will be interesting to hear about community scandals and share your thoughts on the most recent celebrity gossip. Before you make a decision about accepting or declining an invitation to participate in a charitable initiative, give it more thought.

Cancer (June 22 – July 23)

If you find yourself daydreaming or stepping back from daily tasks, take it easy. Use this opportunity to connect with your inner self if some tasks are in order. Spend some time by yourself to recharge your mental and emotional batteries.

Leo (July 24 – Aug 23)

A few issues will arise for a community project or fundraising initiative. Although this delay will be annoying, it can be fixed. You will need to give more time to consider these new ideas as they come up, and you will need to give them more time. You probably have little to choose from the situation.

Virgo (Aug 24 – Sept 23)

You may not be in your best moods, as a result of a friend or loved one saying something hurtful. You might not initially believe what they said was offensive, but you might soon realize that some of what they said is true. Reflect on your emotions, and you’ll discover your issues.

Libra (Sept 24 – Oct 23)

Friendship-related activities are most likely to be gregarious and friendly. Any interactions you have with the general public will be positive and upbeat. If you are asked to consider a new partnership arrangement, which might be romantic, personal, or professional, don’t be surprised.

Scorpio (Oct 24 – Nov 22)

Keep communication channels open at home and at work. You’ll understand how crucial it is to keep others informed about your projects and tasks and how they’re progressing. You’ll gain more by being open and communicating than by being silent.

Sagittarius (Nov 23 – Dec 21)

You and the person you meet today seem to have a powerful emotional connection. Both of you will benefit greatly from this experience in the future. You’ll enjoy the experience despite the difficulty of understanding or explaining what is happening.

Capricorn (Dec 22 – Jan 20)

Don’t confine your emotions inside. Let your housemates know if they assume that you are a hard worker. Remind them that doing the laundry and cleaning the kitchen and bathroom are not your only responsibilities. You will feel exhausted today if you spent the night doing chores until late last night.

Aquarius (Jan 21 – Feb 19)

You’re doing well, things. Friendships are harmonious and there is romance in the air. In the future, a trip with your loved ones, a walk in the woods, or a picnic on the beach will inspire you all to do this more frequently.

Pisces (Feb 20 – Mar 20)

You are well-versed in what other people are thinking, especially those who are close to you. Because they feel at ease in your company, people naturally want to share their thoughts with you. Trust your gut more than your senses when it comes to reason.

Norris ‘very happy’ despite missing out on pole

Grand Prix of Miami

Location: Miami International Autodrome 4 May Start time: 1:00 BST on Sunday

McLaren’s Lando Norris said he was “very happy” after qualifying at the Grand Prix of Miami, despite losing out on pole position to Max Verstappen.

Even though Norris’ satisfaction was mixed with some frustration, he felt that some of the issues he has been having this season have improved. He ended up 0.065 seconds away from the Red Bull driver.

The Briton has been open about the fact that he feels as though his McLaren car doesn’t “talk to him” as he would like when pushed to the limit during a qualifying lap.

And while he once more messed up his position by making it pole-sitter, their communication at Hard Rock Stadium this weekend has been better.

The sprint race winner on Saturday, Norris, said, “Max did a Max lap once more and I can’t fault him.” Second was not bad in light of that and his own weekend, then.

Norris expressed his satisfaction with the final product. It’s only frustrating when you miss out on pole, so that’s just a shame.

His team-mate Oscar Piastri and Verstappen both believed that he and he should have fought for pole.

The Australian, who won the championship by nine points the previous time out in Saudi Arabia, claimed he was fourth due to “poor execution.”

The gap has always been close, and we’ve gained a little more on Sundays, but our perception of where we are has always been that we’re going to be beaten, which has proven to be year after year.

Andrea Stella, the team’s principal, claims that Verstappen has now established a sufficient pattern to allow him to claim three poles in six races.

We now have enough data to confirm what we already knew from the (pre-season) test in Bahrain, “Stella said,” indicating that the car was more advantageous in terms of performance in race simulation runs, rather than just on one lap with qualifying trim and brand-new tires.

“We have seen that we haven’t had a perfect lap, essentially.”

We are unwaveringly attempting to assess our understanding of engineering on a solid foundation so that we can test drive our drivers’ cars to see if we can provide them with a car that is just slightly more predictable and full of information about how the grip is when the car is at the limit.

Red Bull have their own in Miami, the first of a number of improvements that they hope will enable Verstappen to compete with McLaren drivers more consistently in races.

Verstappen said, “We are trying to achieve a better balance in the car, of course.” It’s just a really strange layout, in my opinion, so it’s not always the easiest to say that you’ve improved or accomplished something. Therefore, it takes longer.

Lando Norris holds his sprint race trophyImages courtesy of Getty

Red Bull have not been capturing the most accurate portrayal of the two teams’ competitive landscape, according to McLaren.

Red Bull are very good at producing quick cars, Stella asserted. They “drive very fast cars very well,” I would say, and they do it very well to create the narrative in their favor.

They take advantage of every chance they can to stay in the competition, and one of the chances is to tell the story, “Oh, we are making miracles here, the others should win every practice session, qualifying, and race.”

Some of our competitors’ stories, such as this, are written in this form, which we occasionally read before turning the page and concentrating on ourselves.

An intriguing race is set up by the grid. The title rivals are in reverse chronological order, with Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli serving as the interloper between Norris and Piastri.

And Norris has the chance to win his first race since March’s season-opening race in Australia.

He knows the car is moving at the right pace because he made errors at the last corner on both of his laps during qualifying.

“Whether it’s set-up or what, I’m not too sure,” said Norris, “Max has always been good in qualifying, but we have struggled a little more in qualifying.”

“We are aware that the Red Bulls are running a lot more downforce,” he said. However, we are aware that both conditions will give us good pace in a very long race.
