Nuggets outlast Thunder in Game 3 overtime thriller in NBA playoffs

Jamal Murray scored 27 points, and the host Denver Nuggets dominated in overtime to beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 113-104 in Game 3 of their Western Conference second-round playoff series.

Nikola Jokic missed all 10 of his 3-point attempts in Friday’s matchup and finished 8-for-25 from the field but ended the night with 20 points and 16 rebounds for the Nuggets, who lead the best-of-seven series 2-1.

Game 4 is on Sunday afternoon in Denver.

Aaron Gordon scored 22 points, including a tying bucket in the final minute of regulation, and Michael Porter Jr went 5-for-6 from deep and finished with 21 points for the Nuggets, who finished 39-for-85 from the field (45.9 percent).

“We’ve been in this situation before, we stayed poised,” Porter said about Denver’s ability to win close games. “[Aaron Gordon] hit that big 3 to send it to overtime, like he’s done all playoffs. Huge win.”

Jalen Williams scored 32 points for Oklahoma City, who were 1-for-7 from the field in overtime with two turnovers. Chet Holmgren had 18 points and 16 rebounds, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander finished with 18 points and 13 rebounds, and Isaiah Hartenstein had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Thunder, who were 40-for-104 (38.5 percent) from the field.

“One thing that it takes to be a great team is you get taken to the limit in the playoffs, and you’ve got to rise to the challenges that you’re confronted with,” Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault said. “This team’s made a habit of doing that repeatedly. I have full confidence we’ll continue to do that, but we have to embrace what this is.”

Jokic opened overtime with a layup, and Porter drained a 3-pointer to make it 107-102. Williams missed a floater and had a turnover, which led to Murray’s layup with 3:02 left.

Holmgren’s dunk with 1:56 left was Oklahoma City’s only basket in overtime, and the Nuggets closed it out.

“I think, late in the games, you can rely on what you’ve seen and felt and done,” Nuggets head coach David Adelman said about the team’s playoff experience. “You can feel a game that maybe you played a couple of years ago.”

Gilgeous-Alexander went 7-for-22 from the field but put the Thunder ahead 93-92 with his first 3-pointer of the night with 7:33 left in the fourth.

Oklahoma City led 95-93 after Murray split a pair of free throws with 5:58 left, and both teams went cold from the field. Gilgeous-Alexander missed three straight shots, and Denver tied it on Gordon’s two free throws with 4:26 remaining.

Williams hit a layup, and Murray tied it at 97 with two free throws and put Denver ahead with a 17-footer with 2:17 left.

Luguentz Dort gave Oklahoma City back in front with a 3-pointer – his only points of the night – Murray was called for a travel with 1:31 remaining, and Williams made a pair of free throws to make it 102-99.

Gordon’s 3-pointer tied it with 27.5 seconds left, Gilgeous-Alexander missed a floater, and Jokic’s 20-footer at the buzzer was off, sending it to overtime.

Banged-up Cavs blow out Pacers in Game 3

In an earlier playoff matchup on Friday, Donovan Mitchell scored 43 points to lift the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 126-104 victory over the Indiana Pacers in Game 3 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series in Indianapolis.

The top-seeded Cavaliers outscored Indiana by a 34-13 margin in the second quarter en route to cutting their deficit to 2-1 in the best-of-seven series. Game 4 is on Sunday in Indianapolis.

Mitchell, who added nine rebounds, made 14 of 29 shots from the floor and 10 of 14 from the free throw line. The six-time All-Star drained five 3-pointers on 13 attempts after entering the contest just 2-for-18 from beyond the arc.

Cleveland’s Max Strus collected 20 points and seven rebounds, Jarrett Allen had 19 and 12, and reigning Defensive Player of the Year Evan Mobley added 18 and 13, respectively, in his return from a one-game absence caused by a sprained left ankle.

Darius Garland finished with just 10 points while being plagued by foul trouble. He was playing his first game since April 23, having recovered from a toe injury.

“[We were] down 2-0,” Cavaliers coach Kenny Atkinson said. “It’s kind of now or never. You’re banged up and you’re hurting … They had to test it today. They showed a lot of fortitude. We have one day of recovery here, so it’s a quick turnaround, and they can turn it around and be ready to go.”

Cleveland held a decisive 56-37 edge in rebounds, including an 18-4 advantage on the offensive end.

Indiana’s Bennedict Mathurin scored 23 points off the bench, and Pascal Siakam added 18.

Star Tyrese Haliburton was limited to just four points on 2-of-8 shooting for the fourth-seeded Pacers.

Cleveland will try to level the series when the Pacers host Game 4 on Sunday.

Russia-Ukraine war: List of key events, day 1,171

Here is where things stand on Saturday, May 10:

Fighting

  • Russia and Ukraine accused one another of violating a May 8-10 ceasefire that had been unilaterally declared by Russian President Vladimir Putin to coincide with commemorative events marking the 80th anniversary of victory over Nazi Germany in World War II.
  • The Russian Defence Ministry said on Friday that Ukrainian troops had made four attempts to smash through the border into the Kursk and Belgorod regions in the past week. It claimed that Kyiv’s troops attacked Russian forces 15 times during the ceasefire.
  • In Belgorod, the local governor said a Ukrainian drone had attacked a government building on Friday. Pro-Russian war bloggers said Ukraine attacked multiple villages in the region, with further “high-intensity fighting” near Tetkino, a village in the Kursk region.
  • Ukraine, which has called the ceasefire “a farce” and did not commit to abide by it, said late on Friday that 162 armed clashes had been recorded over the previous 24 hours, along with 22 air strikes and 956 drone attacks.
  • Ukraine’s military said Russian forces had attempted to break through Ukrainian lines 51 times, with heavy fighting near Pokrovsk, a logistics hub in eastern Ukraine targeted by Moscow’s troops for months.
  • The military administration of Ukraine’s northeastern Sumy region said Russia killed three civilians in armed clashes on Thursday and Friday.
  • The governor of Ukraine’s southeastern Zaporizhia region said Russia had hit eight Ukrainian front-line villages 220 times since the ceasefire went into effect on Thursday.
  • Further attacks were reported in Ukraine’s southern city of Kherson and the central Dnipropetrovsk region, with two people wounded.

Politics and diplomacy

  • Putin hosted 20 foreign dignitaries, including Chinese President Xi Jinping and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, at a Red Square military parade on Friday to mark the 80th anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II.
  • United States President Donald Trump said on Friday he would like Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to “get this stupid war finished” after calling for a “30-day unconditional ceasefire” the previous day.
  • Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store said a group of 10 northern European nations in the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) coalition had agreed to support the 30-day ceasefire proposed by the US, noting that a “concerted approach” was now being taken.
  • Zelenskyy’s chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, said he spoke by telephone on Friday with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other officials about the 30-day ceasefire proposal.
  • Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov reiterated Russia’s position on Friday that it supports the implementation of a 30-day ceasefire in the conflict, but only with due consideration of “nuances”.
  • Foreign ministers from almost 20 European nations met in Ukraine’s western city of Lviv, backing the establishment of a special tribunal to prosecute Putin and his officials for crimes of aggression.
  • Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov was quoted by Interfax as saying Russia and the US plan another round of talks aimed at getting their respective diplomatic missions fully operational.
  • North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said North Korea’s involvement in the Russia-Ukraine war was “just”, calling it an exercise of sovereign rights in defence of a “brother nation”, state media KCNA reported on Saturday.
  • Ukraine and Hungary, whose relations have deteriorated amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, are expelling two diplomats each after each side accused the other of engaging in espionage.

European leaders in Ukraine’s Kyiv to press Russia for 30-day ceasefire

The leaders of France, Britain, Germany and Poland have arrived in Ukraine for talks with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and have put pressure on Russia to agree to a 30-day ceasefire as a step to end the three-year conflict.

French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer arrived together by train from neighbouring Poland on Saturday. Later, they were joined by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

“There is a lot of work to do, a lot of topics to discuss. We must end this war with a just peace. We must force Moscow to agree to a ceasefire,” said Andriy Yermak, Zelenskyy’s chief of staff, posting photographs welcoming the leaders off the train.

It is the first time the leaders of the four European nations have made a joint visit to Ukraine.

More than three years into Russia’s invasion, the hugely symbolic show of European unity comes a day after President Vladimir Putin struck a defiant tone at a Moscow parade marking 80 years since victory in World War II.

United States President Donald Trump has proposed a 30-day unconditional ceasefire as a step to end the conflict. But Putin has resisted so far.

Reporting from Kyiv, Al Jazeera’s Zein Basravi said the quartet’s visit was “symbolic”, practical meetings were also expected to take place.

“Those practical meetings are expected to discuss the 30-day ceasefire, but crucially how to keep the US on side moving forward with any sort of talks,” he said.

After meeting Zelenskyy in the morning, the leaders are to host a virtual meeting to update other European leaders on moves to create a European force that could provide Ukraine with security after the war.

‘Just and lasting peace’

“Alongside the US, we call on Russia to agree a full and unconditional 30-day ceasefire to create the space for talks on a just and lasting peace,” the leaders said in a statement ahead of the visit.

“We are ready to support peace talks as soon as possible, to discuss technical implementation of the ceasefire, and prepare for a full peace deal,” they added.

The statement said “the bloodshed must end, Russia must stop its illegal invasion, and Ukraine must be able to prosper as a safe, secure and sovereign nation within its internationally recognised borders for generations to come”.

The leaders promised to continue to increase their support for Ukraine, saying “until Russia agrees to an enduring ceasefire, we will ratchet up pressure on Russia’s war machine”.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in an interview with the ABC news channel on Saturday that arms deliveries from Ukraine’s allies must stop before Russia would agree to a ceasefire.

A truce would otherwise be an “advantage for Ukraine” at a time when “Russian troops are advancing … in quite a confident way” on the front, Peskov said, adding that Ukraine was “not ready for immediate negotiations”.

Russia has occupied about a fifth of Ukrainian territory and has yet to respond to the pressure for an enduring ceasefire.

Inside David and Victoria Beckham’s feud with Nicola Peltz as real reason for ‘relationship fracture’ revealed

Nicola Peltz and Brooklyn Beckham married in 2022 and rumours have emerged of a feud between the pair and their in-laws – particularly after snubbing David Beckham’s birthday

The real reason for the feud has been revealed(Image: AFP via Getty Images)

The real reason for the “relationship fracture” between Victoria and David Beckham and Nicola Peltz has been revealed. Rumours have swirled since 2022 that the trio haven’t seen eye to eye since Nicola tied the knot with son Brooklyn three years ago.

It comes as Nicola’s friends have made claims what the real reasons for the fallout are. A pal has suggested that there is “emotional abuse and toxic behaviour” between the family which is why the four are unable to get along. However, David and Victoria reject the claims and are outraged by the suggestions.

A source close to the Beckhams said: “I don’t think anyone who has ever seen David and Victoria with their children would recognise this deeply unpleasant attack. It doesn’t even warrant a response it’s so ludicrous and patently untrue.”A second source told The Mirror that the couple have been left “open mouthed” after hearing the suggestions.

Nicola’s friend had earlier said: “We are at this point because Nicola, an outsider coming into the Beckham family, has been able to help Brooklyn see the emotional abuse and toxic behaviour within his family, that it’s not healthy and it’s not normal and it’s not ok.”

But an acquaintance of the Beckhams said that Nicola’s friends were “pumping out untruths” as they added: “You wouldn’t expect this of your worst enemy, let alone close family members. The whole thing beggars belief.”

It has been said that the “relationship fracture” first began when Brooklyn and Nicola tied the knot back in 2022. The pair married at her £76 million family mansion in Palm Beach, Florida.

“Nicola was very stressed out and quite difficult to be around and at the time everyone put it down to wedding nerves, and gave her the benefit of the doubt,” the source said. “But looking back it was the beginning of the relationship fracturing.”

Victoria and Nicola reportedly butted heads when it came to who was going to design her wedding gown. It was assumed that, being a fashion designer, Victoria would take the reigns but instead Nicola ended up wearing a Valentino dress instead.

Sources claimed that Victoria offered to take up the job but then avoided calls with stylist Leslie Fremar before eventually texting Nicola that she couldn’t do it. Despite the feud, it has been said that all parties have been left disappointed by the situation.

It’s unknown whether a reconciliation could be on the cards but a source said that there was “no anger but just a deep sense of sorrow about how things have turned out.”

Esther Rantzen’s That’s Life hosts now – problem ‘moobs’ to surprise job and tragic death

It’s been three decades since That’s Life! was on our TV screens, but the Esther Rantzen-fronted show is still fondly remembered by many – what became of its many stars?

That’s Life! was a TV institution – one of the biggest shows of its time, regularly watched by more than 20 million viewers. A bizarre mix of campaigning consumer affairs, rudely-shaped garden vegetables and a dog who could say “sausages”, it was launched in 1973 and ran for 21 years, until it was eventually axed in 1994.

At the helm was the indomitable Esther Rantzen, later made a Dame, who presented alongside a string of co-hosts including Gavin Campbell, Doc Cox, Joanna Monro, Chris Serle and Howard Leader.

Memorable moments from the show pervaded everyday life, with singer Allison Jordan winning a search for a star competition in an early precursor to The X Factor, even being awarded a recording contract with Simon Cowell. A campaign against child abuse also led to Esther famously establishing the helpline Childline, while a weekly jobsworth hat was awarded to officious members of the public who enforced seemingly-pointless rules because it was ‘more than their job was worth not to.’

Add into the mix the carrots that looked like penises, or parsnips resembling vaginas, and a dog who famously – and not particularly coherently – said the word ‘sausages’, and you have some idea of why the studio audience was either in hysterics or floods of tears during each week’s episode.

“Our clout came from the size of our audience,” Esther told The Guardian, “which meant that decision-makers, even prime ministers, knew we were watched by the people they answered to. It helped that Sunday night was the evening MPs were most likely to watch TV.”

But what became of That’s Life!’s many presenters? Mirror takes a look at the lives and careers of some of its best-loved faces….

Esther Rantzen

Esther, now 84, devised the show alongside two other co-creators. Sadly, in January 2023 she revealed she has lung cancer and later said she wanted to die at Swiss clinic Dignitas, while campaigning for assisted dying.

However, in March this year her daughter Rebecca Wilcox said Esther was now too unwell to travel to Switzerland for the death she wanted, and that her mum’s life-preserving drugs were no longer working.

Speaking of her proudest achievements in life, Esther said: “Childline has made such a difference to millions of children. So has the Silver Line Helpline for isolated and vulnerable older people. And I’m delighted that people are still moved and inspired by the moment on That’s Life! when we introduced Sir Nicholas Winton to the children he saved from the Holocaust. I consider myself so lucky to have been in the right place at the right time with the right brilliant teams.”

Actress Joanna, 69, was on That’s Life! for just two years – from 1982 to 1984. She went on to become a theatre star, playing the part of Rosie in the ABBA musical Mamma Mia, spending five years in the show in London’s West End, as well as on tour. She is married to Granville Saxton, best known for playing a Death Eater in the Harry Potter franchise.

Doc Cox

Doc, 78, started on That’s Life! as the show’s warm-up man for 10 years, before switching to a role in front of the cameras, remembering: “Someone didn’t turn up for one of the auditions or something, and I was sort of pushed in”.

He’s also known by the stage name Ivor Biggun and has released four albums of humorous, smutty songs. One of his singles was NME’s single of the week in the late 1970s and reached No 22 in the UK charts.

Bill Buckley

Bill, 66, presented the show from 1982 to 1985, having been chosen from a list of thousands while he was working as a newspaper reporter. He went on to appear on the BBC’s Holiday programme as well as gameshows including Blankety Blank, Call My Bluff and All Star Secrets. When Channel 5 launched in 1997, he was a senior continuity announcer for more than five years and became a presenter on local radio.

Bill has also spoken out about his struggle with ‘moobs’ – a condition called gynacomastia – where men develop female-type breasts even if they are not overweight or out of condition. He said: “I suffered from this until I had my moobs removed at the age of 40 and am always looking for opportunities to ‘bang the drum’ about corrective surgery.”

Howard Leader

Howard appeared on TV in shows including the popular sitcom ‘Allo ‘Allo before joining That’s Life! for it’s final five years before it was axed. He went on to present for BBC local radio, including BBC Radio Lincolnshire.

Gavin Campbell

Gavin, 79, presented the show from 1982 until its end in 1994, having previously appeared in the film adaptation of TV show On The Buses. In the 1997 general election, he presented a video for Referendum Party, supporting the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the European Union.

Since 2003, he has been part of a company that imports wine, having retired from showbiz.

Chris Serle

Chris sadly died in September last year, at the age of 81, as the BBC paid tribute to a “familiar and cherished figure on British television screens throughout the 1970s and 1980s”. His broadcasting journey included stints presenting In at the Deep End and Points of View for the corporation. He was also at the helm of Radio 4’s Pick of the Week from 1981 to 1988, and entertained listeners on his long-running afternoon show on BBC Radio Bristol.

Chris’s list of prominent shows further includes Windmill, treasured for revisiting archived BBC clips of hit series such as Blue Peter and Doctor Who. He was seen in The Computer Programme, which aired in 1982, and later in Monkey Business.

Adrian Mills

He also presented a series of podcasts, reuniting with Esther Rantzen, called That’s Afterlife. He is currently the consumer expert on TalkTV and is the co-owner of Thai Tho, a Thai restaurant located in Wimbledon, London, awarded the Open Table Diners’ Choice Award in 2024.

Mollie Sugden

Actress Mollie, who passed away in 2009 at the age of 86, was best known for starring in the beloved TV sitcom Are You Being Served? She also famously appeared in other shows including Coronation Street, The Liver Birds, That’s My Boy and even Little Britain, alongside David Walliams and Matt Lucas.

Cyril Fletcher

Simon Cowell’s strict morning routine and breakfast after ditching ‘vampire lifestyle’ for son

Britain’s Got Talent judge Simon Cowell has opened up on overhauling his lifestyle, including his morning routine, after realising he needed to make a change upon welcoming son Eric

Having helped launch the careers of artists including One Direction and Little Mix, Simon Cowell is one of the most recognisable faces in showbiz. After starting out as a mailroom clerk at EMI Music Publishing, Simon’s career trajectory saw him become a music mogul as the creator of talent shows The X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent.

Amid his success 65-year-old Simon has opened up on the morning routine that’s helped fuel his success, though has revealed that he’s overhauled it in recent years. Over a decade ago, the TV personality would go to bed in the early hours of the morning after his lifestyle led him to develop an irregular sleeping pattern.

“I was like a vampire. I realised I was going to sleep between 5 and 7 in the morning, and then the trouble with that is no matter if you get six hours or eight hours you always wake up tired,” he told Terri Seymour on ITV’s Lorraine in 2019. “That’s the problem, because you’re not supposed to do that.”

During an interview with GQ magazine in 2011, Simon gave fans a peek inside his old morning routine, with the publication stating that he’d eaten the “same breakfast every day for about five years”. According to the publication, after resetting his alarm’s snooze button twice, he’d tuck into a breakfast of hot water with papaya juice and lime and then three smoothies – a spinach one, an antioxidant one, and a super smoothie containing seven fruits.

“I love to wake up in a good mood and look forward to what’s coming,” he said. “As soon as that tray is put in front of me, I can’t wait to have it. I like looking forward to things.”

However, in 2019 he revealed that he’d given his morning routine a dramatic makeover. Rather than going to sleep when many people wake up, the Britain’s Got Talent star explained how he changed his approach after becoming a dad to his son Eric, who was born in 2014.

“I now go to sleep at 10, I now have breakfast at 8:30. It’s almost like a complete reversal,” he said on Lorraine. When asked about how his previous sleep pattern impacted being a dad, he explained: “That was a big part of it, it just didn’t feel right. I couldn’t explain to someone his age I’d been working all night and I’m tired in the afternoon.

“It bothered me, so I thought, I’m just gonna do it’, and once I did it, it was simple.” As well as changing his sleeping pattern, in 2020 Simon revealed how he kicks off his mornings with a gruelling spot of exercise. In BGT spin-off Unseen Bits, Simon said he did press-ups “150 times before I come to work, in about three goes”.

Meanwhile, in 2022 Simon gave an update on his breakfast situation as he explained that he still enjoys a smoothie to kick off his day. But rather than reaching for three, he now tucks into a “green smoothie” and no-sugar Alpen alongside some tea with oat milk, he told The Sun.

When it comes to lunch, he added that he’d have grilled tomatoes and some soup and revealed he’d often go out for dinner but not eat a thing while there. “I’m not a big eater,” he said. “I don’t enjoy it that much. I’d rather have a beer than eat, any day of the week.

“Sometimes when we are going out for dinner because I know I’m going to hate the food, I have baked beans on toast before I go, then eat nothing. When you go to one of these ghastly big parties, or weddings, where the food is horrific, I just can’t deal with that.”
