Not the coming man much longer – Bethell’s arrival is due

There are a few possible causes of Jacob Bethell’s absence from England’s opening one-day international against West Indies at Edgbaston.

First of all, and most importantly, the boy who was born in Barbados could have probably used maroon instead of royal blue in the away dressing room rather than his home turf for Warwickshire.

His Royal Challengers Bengaluru team, who were traveling 4, 000 miles to the final match of the rescheduled Indian Premier League (IPL), might have marched him to Chandigarh’s final match. Virat Kohli and everything in between

The 21-year-old has regularly made waves in his brief international career. He once more demonstrated why he is the subject of such a lot of hype. The debate over his inclusion in the Test team is not at ease with Bettell’s 82 from 53 balls.

His non-availability for the Zimbabwe Test caused a ruckus. Instead of appearing at Trent Bridge, Beckell was the only current Test squad member to participate in the IPL. Some people argued that he made the wrong choice, especially now that Harry Brook, the new white ball captain, has left his contract with the Delhi Capitals.

In Bethell’s defense, Bengaluru picked him up before making his Test debut, and the two experienced IPL players, England coach Brendon McCullum and Test skipper Ben Stokes, would have surely acted on his advice.

In general, when England are defeated in a limited-overs competition or are illiterate in batting against and bowling spin, there are howls of mockery. India and Sri Lanka will host the T20 World Cup in the first half of the year.

Opening the batting against Mitchell Starc, who described him as “an absolute gun,” will have taught Bethell a lot from sharing a dressing room with an all-time great like Kohli, playing under a coach like Andy Flower, and learning from him.

After signing that contract, Bethell stated in a BBC Test Match Special that “I was always going to be in the IPL.” I thoroughly enjoyed watching the boys perform well from a distance.

Without traveling, Bethell was the story in Nottingham. Stokes’ “put two and two together” comments were ambiguous at best and awkward at worst, according to his spin. The captain’s retort toward the media probably led to Bethell’s inclusion in the India squad for the first Test, but not the starting XI.

Bethell served as the headliner at Edgbaston. Former skipper Jos Buttler or new captain Brook could have been the topics of conversation. Bell showed that he is England’s waiting-star.

His innings featured patience, poise, and pizzazz. A clonk on the head from Alzarri Joseph might have caused him to feel uneasy or rattled by a relatively slow start of 11 from 19 deliveries.

Instead, he eased through the paces and looked destined for a senior professional century century’s opener before falling short in the England innings.

Bethell snapped into swivel pulls after West Indies lost the game and disappeared into the stands. He surgically dissected the field using off-drives when the tourists then attempted to conceal the ball outside the stump. The cheek of reverse-scoops and slaps down the ground were brutal.

Whatever Stokes intended or said at Trent Bridge ultimately, he ultimately confirmed that Bethell and Ollie Pope are fighting for a spot on the Test side.

England’s commitment to the Pope is well documented. He just passed the century mark, is vice-captain of Stokes, has a strong top three record, and has shown willingness to be versatile over the past year. In the event Pope or Zak Crawley struggle, England feels unneeded for Shoaib Bashir as a frontline spinner or Stokes is sidelined by another injury.

However, under Stokes and McCullum, big selection decisions have not been made. When they had reason to believe they had not done a lot wrong, Alex Lees, Jack Leach, James Anderson, Jonny Bairstow, and Ben Foakes were all moved on.

Further back, in the build-up to the 2005 Ashes, perhaps the last time an England team faced a decision between the late Graham Thorpe and Kevin Pietersen, who would have had to make the final call.

Thorpe’s form was impressive, and he recently won 100 Test caps. Michael Vaughan, the captain, preferred the uncapped Pietersen’s flair. The rest is history.

Perhaps it makes no difference when England decides to accept Bethell’s inclusion in a test. It will arrive sooner or later.

He’s a confident young man, Brook said. He is well-known for being an exceptional player and for being a good player. If he continues to bat the way he does, he will have a very long English career.

He can bowl and field as well, and he brings so much to the side. He will only succeed if he continues to work hard on his game if he is only 21 and plays the way he is in our side.

Reality TV star Harriet Cowan’s partner has been identified following her debut on the new season of Clarkson’s Farm. She has given glimpses into her relationship on social media over the years, including in recent months.

Harriet, 24, joined the cast of the Prime Video show for its fourth season, which launched last week. Introduced as cover for Kaleb Cooper, she’s helped Jeremy Clarkson on Diddly Squat Farm in Oxfordshire. It’s been reported that Harriet isn’t set to return later in the series though. Since her first appearance in a trailer for Clarkson’s Farm, her life off-screen at home in Derbyshire has attracted attention. Harriet, who’s a nurse as well as a farmer, regularly posts about her life on platforms like TikTok.

She also shared information about her relationship with third-generation farmer James Booth, who is alleged to be the same person as him. Since posting about a “date night” with him in 2021, Harriet has updated readers about their relationship.

Her stepsister Elina Clifford – who has previously suggested that she has a tense relationship with Harriet – told the Daily Mail that Harriet and James have been dating for “some time”. Elina, whose mother is married to Harriet’s father, added: “I’ve met James a few times, he’s alright, he’s lovely but not sure what he is doing with Harriet.”

Over the years, Harriet has revealed details of her relationship with James, who she occasionally crosses paths with. She made the suggestion that her partner is four years older than her in a post from last month, alongside footage of him driving a tractor.

Additionally, the content creator suggested that she had a connection with James through a YFC (Young Farmers’ Club) organization. She remarked in her over-the-top video that the “butter effect” is crazy because she claims the pair “could never of met” if they hadn’t joined the growing industry.

Harriet wrote, “YFC gave me my entire life, and for that I will forever be grateful,” in the post’s title last month. She urged others to consider joining community organizations because they would “meet the greatest people” and encouraged them to do so.

Tom Daley reveals manager warned him against coming out and first move he made on Dustin

Retired Olympic diver Tom Daley reveals details of his relationship with Dustin Lance Black and why he was made to feel he should not come out as gay by his manager

Tom Daley made the first move on his now husband Dustin Lance Black – but was advised not to come out as gay by some managers advising his career.

The Olympic diving star, 31, reveals details of their relationship and explains why he came out in a YouTube video 11 years ago as part of a new documentary about his career.

He met Dustin Lance Black during a low point in his diving when he was suffering from a lack of confidence, but that didn’t stop him making a play for Lance.

Tom says: “I got to a really low point with my diving where I thought I wasn’t going to be able to keep going like I didn’t see the point in carrying on. Meeting Lance, he kind of inspired me to want to carry on. Inspired me to want to be great at what I do. He inspired me to want to be the best person that I could be. It was really special, because I think it was the first time that I realised that being attracted to men wasn’t just a sexual thing. I actually could fall in love with a man.”

Lance says: “My phone, he puts his number in, and when he hands it back and I look at it, he’s put a winky face at the end of his phone number. No heterosexual man has ever put a winky face at the end of their number when they give it to another dude!”

Explaining how they bonded, Lance adds: “The first things we started sharing were about the fact that he had, not so long ago lost his dad. I had not so long ago just lost my big brother, who was like my dad, because I never had that. I had recently won an Academy Award. He had won his first Olympic medal.

“We were able to share with each other the post accomplishment blues and devastation, the way that when you win something you only ever dreamed about, there’s something inside you that disassembles and has to be put back together, and that there’s almost no one on the planet you can share that with, because people think, Well, gosh, you should be so grateful.”

But the relationship was not straightforward as Tom was not out as gay at the time they met and his management seemed keen to keep things that way.

Tom explains: “I remember organising a party and telling my management he (Dustin Lance Black) was coming. They said to me, ‘Oh, be careful of being photographed with Lance, because, you know, he is, like, a really big LGBT activist. You don’t want people thinking that you’re gay’. And I was like, ‘oh, would that be so bad? Like, okay’. And then I was, like, suddenly filled with shame.“

He later adds: “We had all kinds of crisis meetings about how we were going to deal with this. You’re gonna lose all your sponsorship. You’re gonna lose all your fans. Like, how are you ever gonna be able to compete in the Middle East, in Russia, in all of these countries? Kind of filling me with like, fear about what I should and shouldn’t do.

“It’s a really scary thing to have to feel like you are a slave to the culture in the media that we have in the UK, which can be really quite scary, knowing that I was gay from the age of three years old, and constantly having to live my life as somebody else, and putting on this person that I wasn’t was exhausting, and that was when I decided to come out publicly.”

On the pressure Tom felt to not come out from his management, Lance says: “You’re mismanaging one of the most important parts of who this person is, their heart, their love, their future relationships and families. That’s mismanagement. That’s a dereliction of duty, and he (manager involved) should have been dropped.”

Speaking in Tom Daley 1.6 Seconds, the diver also says he feels free now of pressure having retired and is looking forward to new adventures with Lance and their sons Robbie and Phoenix. “Only time will tell what my next journey will be,” Tom says.

“But I’m sure it’ll be filled with just as many highs, just as many lows, but I know for right now, spending time with Lance, Robbie and Phoenix is my priority.

“After my dad died, I was trying to fill that void. Looking back on it all, I realised that not doing it just for myself, being able to do it for my friends, my family, my teammates, my country, gave me the determination that I needed to be able to get through my career. I’m excited to see what the future holds. What, me, my boys and Lance achieve in the future.”

Savage comment from diving boss that led to Tom Daley ‘body dysmorphia and bulimia’ issues

In a forthcoming, candid portrait of his life, Olympic champion diver Tom Daley has been revealing the harsh treatment he received from sports executives during his campaign to capture the gold in an upcoming movie about his life.

Tom Daley explains his eating disorders and how he got sick.

Emotional Tom Daley has revealed in a new documentary how he was ordered to lose weight by sports bosses and it contributed to him having an eating disorder.

In March this year the Olympic diving star, 31, had told for the first time how he suffered from “all kinds of different issues around body dysmorphia and bulimia” during his career.

He goes further and explains what transpired in his new movie, though. In Tom Daley’s 1.6 seconds, he states: “At the end of 2011, I was told by our performance director at British diving that I needed to lose weight, that I needed to look slimmer, leaner, and more like I did in 2008; it was the first time I felt valued more than how I looked, but rather how I looked. Let’s say I took some very drastic measures to prevent the food from sticking in my stomach.

In the weeks leading up to the Olympic Games, I had a diary in which I would write my weight and date, but a rational person would know that I wasn’t fat. I felt like I was being kind of left on my own devices and kind of left with that struggle by myself because even when I was meeting with my sports psychologist, I was struggling to bring that out because every time I said it out loud, I knew it would sound silly, but in my head, it was the biggest thing I would always think about, every time I made a decision about what to eat, if I was going to eat it and then become so enamored that I had to do something about it.

Tom goes on to say that being alone throughout the early years of his career, he struggled to be open about how he felt to others.

He continues, “I still feel like ashamed talking about it now because, like, once you’re on the other side of it, it seems so simple to stop and ask for help, but when you’re in it, you feel like you can’t be helped,” he continues.

“Guys didn’t have eating disorders. Guys’ mental health was unaffected by anything. Guyanese were created as these macho creatures that would get into trouble whatever and just keep going. I didn’t know who I could talk to because I wasn’t. I felt very alone in every situation I was dealing with, which is the main theme here.

Sophie Lee, Tom’s close friend, also makes reference to the stresses that he was going through. She claimed that the eating disorder was more significant than the amount of stress and anxiety he was experiencing when he arrived in London in 2012.

Tom, the most decorated diver in the world, won five Olympic medals at the end of his career. When he first competed in Beijing at the age of 14, he returned five times to Paris last year, where he won a silver medal, and his two sons Robbie and Phoenix saw him in the Olympic pool.

He won a bronze medal at London 2012 shortly after receiving heavy jibes from British diving executives.

He and his wife Dustin Lance Black, their sons Robbie and Phoenix, spend more time at home now that he has retired from diving.

Tom says in the movie, “My entire life has been about diving.” Those 1.6 seconds have been my life’s goal since birth. I would not change a thing after four years of training for a task that would pass in less than ten seconds.

“I’ve had the best time, met the most amazing people, and traveled to incredible places, and it’s been the best 23 years that I can imagine.” Although there have been times when I felt like I couldn’t continue, it has also been incredibly difficult and challenging. I kept going.

“I think the one thing that I’m looking forward to is having the opportunity to share this with Robbie and Phoenix and preserve that memory for the rest of my life,” he said. I feel very fortunate to have people who can now make me feel completely at ease with anything and everything.

“But I think that also comes from letting my guard down, because my guard was up for the longest.”

*On June 1st, Tom Daley 1.6 Seconds will be available on Really and TNT Sports.

Sinner advances on day of upsets and drama in men’s draw

French Open 2025

Location: Roland Garros, May 25 – June

On day five of the French Open, Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic had five-set thrillers, significant upsets, and an emotional farewell.

As he brought the curtain on Frenchman Richard Gasquet’s career and advanced to the third round, the world’s number one Sinner was ruthlessly effective.

Djokovic, the sixth seed, was overcome by Corentin Moutet, who had a blister that would end his record-breaking 25th Grand Slam singles triumph.

You hope the day never arrives, says Sinner, which ends Gasquet’s career.

Sinner, an Italian champion for three consecutive years, extended his winning streak to 63 matches against players outside the top 20.

23 years after Gasquet made his Roland Garros debut, he made a final bow in his playing career.

Although Sinner won 6-3, 6-0, and 6-4 over Gasquet, the Frenchman addressed the envious crowd and presented a commemorative trophy.

“I’ve been thinking a lot about this day, and I’m hoping it never arrives,” Gasquet said.

Djokovic overcomes the blistering complications.

Djokovic, 38, defeated France’s Moutet 6-3, 6-2, 7-6 (7-1) later in the day, continuing his recent strong form.

Djokovic returned to Roland Garros after claiming his 100th ATP singles title in Geneva last week, and he kept his form against Moutet, who won in less than three hours.

In a tight third set, Djokovic only needed a medical timeout for a blister on his left foot.

After saving a crucial point to make the tie-break, the Serb advanced to victory.

With the blister, things got a little complicated, Djokovic said. That initially irritated me a little.

But I don’t believe it will cause me any trouble to overcome.

In a five-set marathon fight, Filip Misolic will face him after beating Denis Shapovalov, the 27th seed of Canada.

On Thursday, world number nine Alex De Minaur, the reigning world number nine, and Czech 19th seed Jakub Mensik both won the first two sets and were eliminated from Roland Garros.

De Minaur, a talented but frequently temperamental payer, fell to 62nd-ranked Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan, who was 2-6, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2.

Bublik later claimed he had already accepted defeat before launching a comeback.

I had the thought “I was checking the tickets [home] already.” In some ways, I didn’t care much. The 27-year-old said, “I was like I will accept the loss.”

For me, it was a little premature. In the first two sets, I struggled a little. Therefore, it was crucial to get up and then engage in one of the best Slam contests of my life.

Henrique Rocha, Portugal’s top 200 overall, will take on Bublik, who surprisingly defeated Mensik.

Fils fights back from injury to win the rollercoaster.

Despite being unable to move at one point due to a back injury, Home hope Arthur Fils made it through a grueling four-and-a-half-hour contest with Spain’s Jaime Munar.

The 20-year-old looked down and out after the third set after getting treated during the third and fourth sets.

The 14th seed, however, rallied from a break down in the decider to compete victory after taking painkillers and being wildly enthralled by the French supporters.

Fils ripped off his shirt as he celebrated his 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (7-4) 2-6 0-6 6-4 victory on Court Suzanne Lenglen, and he savored the cheers from the crowd.

This is “Fils said, my best match of all time.”

The best five-set match I’ve ever played is the best one that I’ve ever had, despite my previous struggles. This game was a possibility for me to lose.

AC Milan sack coach Conceicao after six months in charge

EPA

After only six months in charge of the Serie A side, Milan AC fired coach Sergio Conceicao.

Massimiliano Allegri, who led San Siro for four years between 2010 and 2014, is reportedly planning to make a comeback.

Following Paulo Fonseca’s dismissal, Conceicao, 50, accepted the position and agreed to an 18-month contract.

Just one week after taking the job, he won the Italian Super Cup with Milan and won 11 of his previous six titles at Porto.

However, they never really improved since losing to Bologna in the Coppa Italia final.

Competitors Inter face Paris St-Germain in this weekend’s Champions League final while Conceicao finished eighth overall, which means there won’t be any more European football next season.

The club would like to thank Sergio and his staff for their hard work, dedication, and dedication to leading the team in recent months, Milan said.
