A US airline faces backlash as it begins deportation flights

Avelo Airlines, a Texas-based budget carrier, is facing backlash from both customers and employees over its decision to operate deportation flights under a new contract with the Trump administration.

Avelo, which has been struggling financially, signed a contract with the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) last month to transport migrants to detention centres inside and outside the US, according to an internal company memo reviewed by the Reuters news agency.

On Monday, the airline flew its first flight under the deal from Arizona to Louisiana, data from flight-tracking services FlightAware and Flightradar24 showed.

Avelo plans to dedicate three aircraft to deportation operations and has established a charter-only base in Mesa, Arizona, specifically for these flights, according to the company memo.

The union representing Avelo’s flight attendants called the contract “bad for the airline”, and one customer has helped organise a petition urging travellers to boycott the airline.

US President Donald Trump has launched a hardline crackdown on undocumented immigration, including the deportation of Venezuelan migrants he accuses of being gang members to a maximum-security prison in El Salvador. Immigration authorities also detained and moved to deport some legal permanent US residents. Trump’s policies have triggered a rash of lawsuits and protests.

Tricia McLaughlin, assistant secretary for public affairs at DHS, said Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was deporting illegal aliens who broke the country’s laws. She called the protests “nothing more than a tired tactic to abolish ICE by proxy”.

“Avelo Airlines is a sub-carrier on a government contract to assist with deportation flights,” McLaughlin said in a statement. “Attacks and demonization of ICE and our partners is wrong.”

On defence

The airline on Wednesday confirmed its long-term agreement with ICE and said it was vital to Avelo’s financial stability. It also shared a statement from CEO Andrew Levy acknowledging that it is a “sensitive and complicated topic”, but saying that the decision on the contract came “after significant deliberations”.

The statement added that the deal would keep the airline’s “more than 1,100 crewmembers employed for years to come”.

Avelo said it will use three Boeing 737-800 planes in Mesa, Arizona.

“Flights will be both domestic and international,” the company said, declining to share more details of the agreement.

Avelo, which launched in 2021, was forced to suspend its most recent fundraising round after reporting its worst quarterly performance in two years.

In a message to employees last month, Levy said the airline was spending more than it earned from its customers, forcing it to seek repeated infusions of capital from investors.

“I realize some may view the decision to fly for DHS as controversial,” Levy wrote in the staff memo, which was reviewed by Reuters, but said the opportunity was “too valuable not to pursue”.

Widespread backlash

The Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, which represents Avelo’s crew, has urged the company to reconsider its decision, which it said would be “bad for the airline”.

“Having an entire flight of people handcuffed and shackled would hinder any evacuation and risk injury or death,” the union said. “We cannot do our jobs in these conditions.”

The Trump administration has deported hundreds of migrants labelled as Venezuelan gang members to El Salvador. Photos and videos have shown deportees in handcuffs and shackles.

Customers have also expressed outrage. Anne Watkins, a New Haven, Connecticut, resident, said she has stopped flying with Avelo. She and her co-members at the New Haven Immigrants Coalition have launched an online petition urging travellers to boycott the airline until it ends its ICE flight operations. The petition has garnered more than 38,000 signatures.

Watkins, 55, said the coalition also organised a vigil on Monday to mark the launch of Avelo’s deportation flights.

“Companies can decide to operate in wholly ethical and transparent ways,” she said. “Avelo is not choosing to do that right now.”

Connecticut Attorney General William Tong, a Democrat, has threatened to review the state’s incentives for Avelo, which has received more than $2m in subsidies and tax breaks.

Car Hits Espanyol Fans Outside Stadium Before Barcelona Clash

Several Espanyol fans were hurt after a car drove into a crowd of people outside the RCDE Stadium on Thursday leaving at least 13 with minor injuries, ahead of a La Liga derby clash against Barcelona.

The Mossos d’Esquadra, the regional Catalan police, said the driver of the vehicle had been arrested and a spokesperson told AFP the incident appeared to be “accidental”.

“The situation is controlled and in no case does it pose a risk to people inside the sports venue,” said the Mossos on social media platform X.

‘We Will Keep Crashing Rice Prices,’ BUA Chairman Rabiu Warns Hoarders

The Chairman of BUA Group, Abdul Samad Rabiu, has pledged to further lower the prices of rice and other food items, which he said have already decreased over the past year.

He commended President Bola Tinubu for granting waiver on imported food items, saying that his “foresight” helped crash food prices in the country.

In July 2024, the Tinubu administration announced the suspension of customs duties on imported food items to stem food inflation.

Speaking to State House Correspondents after meeting with President Tinubu on Thursday, Rabiu said BUA Foods keyed into that policy and was able to import quite a lot of wheat, maize and rice.

“At the time food prices were really very high last year. For example, the price of rice was about N100,000 or thereabout per 50 kilo bag. The flour was about N80,000 per bag and maize was about N60,000 per 50 kilo bag, and pasta above N20,000 per Carton. So what we did was, we keyed into that policy and BUA was able to import quite a lot of wheat, maize and rice.

“And the moment the shipment started coming, we started processing, we crushed the prices of some of these commodities. And today I’m happy to inform you that the price of rice is about N60,000 from what it was last year at N110,000. Flour is today N55,000 Naira per 50 kilo bag.

“Maize is about N30,000. And this happened because of Mr President’s foresight and vision by introducing that one-off duty waiver for a period of six months, and with that, we’ve been able to bring down the prices of these commodities,” Rabiu said.

The billionaire businessman further explained the causes of the food price increases and how the President’s policy helped to curb the trend.

“So, what has been happening and a lot of people probably don’t know this, is that Nigerians, a lot of companies in Nigeria usually buy a lot of paddy. That is rice paddy. Rice Paddy is what you use to process rice. So, the moment the harvest season starts, a lot of people will now buy a lot of these paddy and hold it for a period of three to four months. The moment the season finishes, then the price will double. So a lot of people don’t know that, but that has always been the problem.

“That does not really in any way affect the farmer, because the farmer is getting his four to N500,000 per ton of paddy. But the people that are buying and holding for three to four months, once the season finishes, it goes back up to N800,000. Hence why you are getting N110,000 per bag.
“So, what that intervention did at the time when we brought in was to create an issue for those hoarders. Because the moment we imported, we were selling, and those orders had a lot of paddy, they could not sell, and the price now came down, and it is still down.
So a lot of those holders are actually crying now and losing money.”

He said that the Rice Millers Association has come together to address the issue of hoarding by some companies, adding that the association will not allow any of its members to hoard rice.

“What we are doing as rice Millers is that we want to ensure that rice Millers are not buying and hoarding Paddy, although at the end of the day, it’s quite difficult to stop that. But what is happening is that once they know that there is rice availability imported, because BUA has imported enough rice to last us until the end of the year, for example.

“So, they know that if they try to hot rice and try to take it up, Bucha is there and will crash the price. So I am hopeful that at the end of the day, the price of rice going forward is not going to go any higher than what it is today.

“And I’m sure as soon as the season starts, the farmers will get the price they’ve always gotten, and the price of rice is going to stay the same, because people will be wary of hoarding, because if they hoard it is going to be a problem for them, because they might lose money. So that is on rice.

“And again, let me use this opportunity to thank His Excellency, for his foresight, for his vision, because I actually didn’t see that. I didn’t know that that was going to work, but we keyed in. We imported and we have supported, and now prices are down. So that is what we did, and we will continue to do to support the efforts of the government to ensure that food prices continue to come down. And I’m sure prices will come down.

Tries: Whitby (3), Walmsley, Cross, Sailor, Murphy Goals: Whitby (6)

Teenager George Whitby’s 24-point haul led a sparkling St Helens to a one-sided win over play-off rivals Catalans Dragons.

The stand-off, who turns 19 on Saturday, scored a hat-trick of tries and kicked six conversions from seven attempts as Saints eased the pressure on coach Paul Wellens with a display that had echoes of their 2022 Grand Final-winning campaign.

Alex Walmsley, Deon Cross, Tristan Sailor and Lewis Murphy also crossed the line to secure only the Red V’s third win in the past eight Super League games.

The two opposing coaches badly needed a win at the Totally Wicked Stadium after inauspicious starts to a campaign in which both clubs had an eye on challenging for a top two spot, but which has brought real underachievement so far.

The Dragons have had better form recently, going into the game with five wins from their previous seven, but it was Saints who got off to a flying start as Mark Percival’s pass and Sailor’s acceleration split the defence for Whitby to go over within two minutes.

Six minutes later Saints hammered away at the line again and prop Walmsley powered over to leave Catalans reeling.

The French outfit cleared their heads and applied pressure but a series of basic errors, including an awful five errors at the play-the-ball, and some determined Saints defence, kept them out.

Saints finished the half in style as former Salford Red Devils centre Cross marked his home debut with a try and the last move of the first period saw Jack Welsby’s delicious reverse pass send Percival through to set up Whitby for another.

With a comfortable lead and Catalans looking increasingly ragged, the home side could afford to entertain, and another sublime piece of work from Percival, slipping the ball out of the back of his hand, sent Sailor over in the corner.

Tom Cruise ensures all eyes are on him at Mission: Impossible’s London premiere

Tom Cruise even performed a quick stunt for the crowd outside Leicester Square Gardens in one of his last outings as Ethan Hunt.

Tom Cruise made a dramatic entrance at the global premiere of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning on Thursday night (May 15) to mark what might be the final chapter in the long-running action franchise. The premiere, which was held at Leicester Square Gardens, featured an elaborate display with two vintage biplanes positioned in front of a mountain-style backdrop outside the venue.

The Hollywood star, 62, waved to the crowds from the nose of the red stunt plane while dressed in a black suit that he paired with his signature sunglasses. Just as fans thought he might come back down to earth, Cruise started a new balancing act on a yellow-and-black aircraft.

This was a fittingly over-the-top entrance for Cruise’s eighth and potentially final outing as action hero Ethan Hunt. A-listers turned out in force to celebrate the release of the latest Mission: Impossible film, which is scheduled for release in UK cinemas on May 21.

Sir Rod Stewart and his wife Penny Lancaster among the first big names to arrive. They were followed by model Kimberley Garner, presenter and pop star Myleene Klass, and of course, Cruise’s co-stars Hayley Atwell, Pom Klementieff, Mariela Garriga and Esai Morales.

While in the British capital Tom also received a Fellowship from the British Institute in recognition of the contribution he has made to cinema over the past few decades.

Just yesterday Cruise attended another screening of The Final Reckoning with cast members at the Cannes Film Festival. The ensemble, including Hayley Atwell and Hannah Waddingham, participated in a photo call and walked the red carpet.

Before the Cannes screening Tom smiled and waved at fans gathered along the barriers. One group had been camped outside of the venue for six hours, and a lucky few managed to snag a last-minute entry to the screening.

Earlier this week, he was also spotted scaling the roof of the BFI IMAX to pose for promotional photos. The venue, which houses the UK’s largest cinema screen, had been wrapped in a large advertisement for The Final Reckoning.

Cruise has always insisted on doing his own stunts, but that nearly got him into serious trouble on the set of this film, as Christopher McQuarrie has now revealed he almost passed out while trying to shoot a wing-walking scene.

While on stage with Tom in Cannes, McQuarrie shared: “There was a moment where Tom had pushed himself to the point that he was so physically exhausted, he couldn’t get back up off the wing. He was lying on the wing of the plane, his arms were hanging over the front. We could not tell if he was conscious or not.”

At that point the pilot warned the film crew that he only had three minutes of fuel left in the plane, but he couldn’t land while Tom was outside and lying on one of the wings. McQuarrie added: “We watched Tom as he pulled himself up and stuck his head in the cockpit, so that he could replenish the oxygen in his body and then climb up into the cockpit. No one on earth can do that but Tom.”

James Argent is set to return to the stage tonight as he considers making a full public statement after assaulting his Swedish girlfriend.

Spanish police this week confirmed the The Only Way Is Essex star was arrested for “an alleged crime of domestic violence” against model Nicoline Artursson. He appeared at the Court of Violence against Women in Fuengirola in Spain and was given a six-month prison sentence, suspended for two years. Argent, 37, also known as Arg, has kept a low profile since the news broke. We can reveal the singer is set to play a gig in London tonight as he looks to move on from the incident.

Frontman and founder of The Arg Band, James performs at events, weddings and celebrations. He and the band perform regularly at Olivia’s La Cala in Marbella.

Sources say Arg is thinking about putting his side across in a statement or interview.

He broke his silence yesterday, saying: “I haven’t relapsed. I am still three years and four months clean and sober. I am devastated by what’s happened.”

Nicoline, 32, was on holiday with him in Mijas, near Malaga, on May 5 when a diner at a nearby restaurant witnessed a commotion from across the road.

They said the Towie star threw clothes off a balcony and screamed before running out of the house with a bag.

The ITV show suspended Argent last October when he failed a drug test. He later attended rehab.

He met Nicoline in Marbella last summer but following police action, he has been banned from contacting the ex-Miss Sweden for two years.

James will be made to listen to the testimonies of domestic violence survivors and helped to construct a “new masculinity” as part of his obligatory rehabilitation course.

He will also be taught about jealousy and warned about the dangers of prostitution as part of a guide on how to “enjoy a positive sexuality” following his Costa del Sol assault.
