Charles Strouse dead: Broadway composer of Annie and Applause dies at 96

Broadway superstar Charles Strouse – who composed music for Annie and Applause – has died at 96.

The composer’s career spanned more than five decades and he became a leading player in classic musical theatre. He won three Tony Awards, including the 1970 gong for Best Musical for Applause.

His publicist announced the musician died at his home in New York City on Thursday. He was born in the city in 1928 and had a huge influence on the theatre since there, writing more than a dozen Broadway musicals, including Bye Bye Birdie and its sequel Bring Back Birdie 21 years later.

His scores, including pieces for films and TV shows, were catchy and popular. The optimistic anthem for Annie won the 1977 Tony Award for Best Original Score. Mr Strouse’s upbeat numbers helped drive his zest to forge a long career in the industry, writing scores until 2011 at the age of 83.

During an interview on the eve of his 80th birthday in 2008, Mr Strouse said: “When you enjoy doing what you’re doing, which I do very much, I have something to get up for. I work every day. Activity — it’s a life force.”

The composer, who is survived by his four children, visited tours of his shows and met casts in the 1990s. Jenn Thompson, who appeared in the first Annie as Pepper and directed a touring version in 2024, recalls Mr Strouse coming to auditions and shedding a tear when a young girl sang Tomorrow.

She recalled: “He was tearing up and he put his hand on mine. And he leaned in to me and very quietly said, ‘That was you. That used to be you.’ And I thought I would die. I thought my heart would drop out of my shoes… He’s so gorgeously generous and kind. He has always been that way.”

Some of the composer’s later pieces were praised too. The music for Nick & Nora was nominated for a Tony in 1992 after impressing audiences in Broadway. The play told the story about a high society couple attempting to solve the murder of a bookkeeper on a film production in Hollywood.

It was a steel reflected in Mr Strouse, who throughout his career remained determined and optimistic. He saw Annie become of the most popular musicals Broadway has seen. There has been more than 2,300 performances of the musical, based on the book by Thomas Meehan. It has toured frequently in the UK, including in 2023. Jay-Z was even a fan, and he used shards of the work for his 1998 Grammy-winning album Vol. 2… Hard Knock Life.

Even Ms Strouse’s flops contained impressive music, particularly Rags in 1986, with lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, and I and Albert in 1972, a musical about Queen Victoria which had a three-month run in London and was one of Mr Strouse’s personal favorites. All-American also had a memorable ballad Once Upon a Time.

Among Mr Strouse’s film scores were the music for Bonnie and Clyde in 1967 and 1968’s The Night They Raided Minsky’s. One of his last musicals was Minsky’s. A love story set against the backdrop of the fabled burlesque empire, it was the brainchild of English director Mike Ockrent, who died of leukemia in 1999 before the project was completed. By then, Strouse and lyricist Susan Birkenhead had written some dozen songs.

The composer’s wife, Barbara, died in 2023. They had been married for more than 60 years and had four children; Ben, Nick, Victoria and William, together.

A former the Only Way is Essex cast member paid tribute to their partner earlier this week after getting into a new relationship. The reality TV star has given an insight into the romance following a recent holiday abroad as a couple.

Kirk Norcross, 37, who appeared on the ITV show between 2010 and 2013, has been posting about his apparent new relationship on Instagram in recent months. He however hasn’t disclosed his partner’s identity, instead covering her face with a red heart emoji in photos shared with fans.

The former Celebrity Big Brother housemate shared an update with his followers on Wednesday. Kirk posted photos from a holiday to Egypt on the platform. He revealed in the post that he visited the city of Hurghada with his partner.

Alongside a series of photos from the trip, Kirk described his mystery partner as the “right person” in the caption of the post. He wrote in the post uploaded this week: “Egypt dump! When you find the right person everything feels right.”

As with previous posts on his account, his companion’s face was covered by a heart emoji in the photos. One photo included in the post showed the couple sat waiting at an airport, with Kirk smiling beside his partner in the selfie.

Another showed the couple at a bar, with Kirk shirtless and his partner modelling a bikini, amid them soaking up the sun on their holiday together. The pair were seen sporting headscarves in another selfie of them from the recent trip.

Other photos appeared to show them ready for evenings out together whilst away from home. Kirk was seen wearing various shirts and trousers in those few photos, whilst his partner’s wardrobe included a dress and a bodysuit.

It isn’t the first time that Kirk has posted about his latest relationship. Shortly after Valentine’s Day in February, he told his followers in a post on the platform that his partner has been building him up to be “the best version” of himself.

Alongside a photo of them, he wrote at the time: “It’s not about looking for someone to fill in the blanks in your life and it’s not about acting like someone else just to find someone, it’s about finding someone that wants you for you and builds you up to be the best version you are, and that’s what I have found in this one! Thank you for being you!”

Like with his other posts, Kirk didn’t tag or identity his partner at the time. He instead covered her face with a heart emoji in the photo, which showed the pair posing together for a selfie in a mirror whilst in each other’s company.

His partner seems to have first appeared on his Instagram page in November last year. Kirk shared a photo of himself beside an individual, thought to be his current partner, and wrote in the caption: “Everything happens for a reason.”

Kirk, who has two children from previous relationships, was met with support from his followers on Instagram over his latest post. The post has amassed almost 10,000 likes since it was first uploaded to the platform earlier this week.

Aspinall wins in Aberdeen as Littler seals top spot

Nathan Aspinall took the Premier League nightly win in Aberdeen to close on a play-off place while Luke Littler sealed top spot.

Aspinall is on the brink of qualifying after beating Chris Dobey 6-1 in the final on a dramatic evening which saw Gerwyn Price hit a nine-darter.

Dobey claimed a decider to win his semi-final 6-5 against world champion Littler, who earlier won a classic against world number one Luke Humphries that featured 14 180s.

Despite averaging 110.01, Humphries could not halt Littler, who averaged 115.96 to guarantee he would finish top of the league phase.

Defending champion Littler had already qualified for the four-man play-offs in London on 29 May alongside Humphries and Price.

Price hit his second nine-darter of the campaign but ended a 6-4 quarter-final loser to Stephen Bunting.

Aspinall moved above seven-time champion Michael van Gerwen into fourth spot with a 6-3 victory over the Dutchman before dispatching Bunting 6-1 and going four points clear after his final triumph.

If Van Gerwen does not claim the night win in Sheffield next week, Aspinall – who finished fifth in 2023 and 2024 – will claim the last play-off spot.

“All I have said to my family, I don’t want to come fifth again. I’ve put one foot in the finals. I play Michael [van Gerwen] again next week and the pressure is on him,” said the English player.

Littler against Humphries lived up to its billing as the pair delivered a breathtaking quarter-final.

Humphries hit nine maximums to his opponent’s five, but he could not halt Littler’s charge.

In a match that finished in under 12 minutes, there were a total of 40 100-plus visits – 21 from Littler and 19 for Humphries.

Humphries began by hitting six perfect darts, while Littler needed just 10 to win the third leg.

“Are you kidding me? This is an absolute joke,” said Sky Sports pundit Wayne Mardle in commentary.

For the second time in the Premier League this season, Price hit a nine-darter and lost.

He also produced a perfect leg when beaten by Littler in Manchester in April.

The 2021 world champion has the consolation of walking off with another set of 18 carat gold darts from sponsors BetMGM, worth an estimated £30,000.

There have now been five nine-darters in this year’s event. No previous edition of the competition has had more than two.

Van Gerwen remains without a night win in 2025 and in serious danger of missing out on the play-offs for only the second time.

His only absence from the finals since his debut season in 2013 came in 2020 when he finished sixth in the table.

While he matched Aspinall with a 97 average and 42% checkout, the Englishman got to the double twice as many times, and that proved crucial.

Premier League Darts format and points system

Premier League Darts is played across 16 weeks in the league stage with quarter-finals, semi-finals and a final each night.

Each of the eight players is guaranteed to face the other seven in the quarter-finals in weeks one to seven and 9-15, with week eight and week 16 fixtures done off the table. It means we will get fourth v fifth in Sheffield on the final league-stage night, with the play-off spots potentially on the line.

Players earn two points per quarter-final win, an additional point if they win their semi-final, and five for winning the night.

The top four players after the group stage progress to the play-off night at London’s O2 Arena on 23 May, with first facing fourth and second against third in best-of-19-leg matches. The final, which is the best of 21 legs, follows.

Sport stars fear ‘vile’ abuse could cost a life

Getty Images

Sportspeople and pundits have told a regulator that “vile” online abuse has become so severe they fear it could lead to someone taking their own life.

Former cricketer Azeem Rafiq, broadcaster and ex-England footballer Eni Aluko and ex-rugby referee Wayne Barnes were among those interviewed by the government’s online safety regulator, Ofcom.

Working with the football anti-discrimination charity Kick It Out, Ofcom spoke to figures from across sport and broadcasting to get an understanding of their experiences to help with tackling the issue.

It heard that one person barricaded themselves indoors following abuse, and others reported suffering from disordered eating. Fear, anxiety and paranoia had all resulted from suffering abuse, Ofcom said.

“Participants raised concerns that it might only be a matter of time before online hate and abuse becomes a major factor contributing to the suicide of someone in the sector,” Ofcom said in its report documenting the project.

The body spoke to seven selected individuals and held nine discussion groups to examine the impacts of the abuse.

Those interviewed said online platforms needed to offer more protection and felt current tools – such as the ability to block or mute accounts – were not enough.

What is Ofcom doing about it?

Some of the abuse encountered by people in sport is illegal under UK law. The Online Safety Act dictates that social media platforms have a duty to protect users.

Ofcom says it is working on a code of practice to help the companies meet their obligations.

It added projects such as this research would help to shape its work with the platforms.

Some of the abuse detailed is not considered illegal, but Ofcom says it will be “pushing” the companies to make their platforms safer.

“So many people who work in sport are subjected to vile abuse online. This is having a devastating impact on them, their livelihoods and their families, and no-one should have to put up with it,” said Jessica Zucker, online safety director at Ofcom.

“The UK’s new online safety laws mean tech firms now have to start protecting people on their sites and apps from illegal forms of abuse.

“And when all the rules are fully in force, some of the largest social media platforms will have to give users more control over what they see online.

“We’ll be pushing companies hard to make their services safer by design, and holding them to account if they don’t.”

‘I was very, very scared, I didn’t leave my house for a week’

Those interviewed told researchers about the scale of abuse they suffered and its impacts.

Participants were chosen because they had experience of abuse. Former Yorkshire cricketer Rafiq encountered abuse and threats after documenting the racism he suffered in the game.

“The abuse left me feeling incredibly paranoid, at times, and often made me question my sanity,” Rafiq says in the report.

“The impact of this experience on me as a human being and on my mental health has damaged my life to such an extent, I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to quantify it.”

Aluko, who last month won the first stage of a libel case after being targeted on social media by ex-footballer Joey Barton, is not quoted in the report but did contribute to it.

Ex-international rugby referee Barnes detailed the abuse aimed at his wife, which he says “shocked” him. Much of it originated after contentious decisions taken in games, he said.

“I wasn’t active on social media. She then became the subject of the abuse, with people attacking her personally via direct messages to her social media accounts and work email address, or by posting fake and offensive friend requests. The abuse went on for some time,” Barnes said.

He said “misogynistic language” and even “threats of sexual violence” were aimed at her.

The report documents how “a female TV sports presenter will get horrendous amounts of abuse, often just about what she’s wearing”.

Another contributor said: “I didn’t leave my house for a week because of the impact of online abuse, the sort of wave [of intensity] and the amount of people that are abusing you.”

Researchers were told that the fear of receiving more abuse led to some of the contributors turning down work.

Sanjay Bhandari, chair of the anti-discrimination body Kick It Out, said: “The impact of online abuse is undeniable, and the rise in discriminatory social media reports to Kick It Out last season shows it’s getting worse.”

He said the Ofcom report showed a culture of abuse that has become normalised”.

“It’s vital that we see social media companies step up with meaningful tools that give users real control over what they see and experience online,” he added.

US judge dismisses case against migrants caught in new military zone

A United States judge in the southwestern state of New Mexico has dismissed trespassing charges against dozens of migrants apprehended in a military zone recently created under President Donald Trump.

The military zone is one of two so far that the Trump administration has created along the US-Mexico border, in order to deter undocumented migration into the country.

Entering a military zone can result in heightened criminal penalties. As many as 400 cases have since been filed in Las Cruces, New Mexico, alleging security violations and crimes like trespassing on restricted military property.

But starting late on Wednesday and continuing into Thursday, Chief US Magistrate Judge Gregory Wormuth began issuing dismissals at the request of the federal public defender’s office in Las Cruces.

Wormuth ruled that the government had failed to demonstrate that the migrants knew they were entering a military zone.

“The criminal complaint fails to establish probable cause to believe the defendant knew he/she was entering” the military zone, Wormuth wrote in his orders dismissing charges.

The ruling is the latest legal setback for the Trump administration, as it seeks to impose stricter restrictions and penalties for undocumented immigration. But the president’s broad use of executive power has drawn the ire of civil liberties groups, who argue that Trump is trampling constitutional safeguards.

Establishing new military zones has been part of Trump’s strategy to reduce the flow of migration into the US.

Normally, the crime of “improper entry by an alien” carries fines or a prison sentence of up to six months. But trespassing on a military zone comes with steeper penalties than a typical border crossing, and Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has warned of a possible combined sentence of up to 10 years.

“You can be detained. You will be detained,” Hegseth warned migrants. “You will be interdicted by US troops and border patrol working together.”

On April 18, the first military zone was unveiled, called the  “New Mexico National Defence Area”. It covered a stretch of about 274 kilometres — or 180 miles — along the border with Mexico, extending into land formerly held by the Department of the Interior.

Hegseth has said he would like to see more military zones set up along the border, and in early May, a second one was announced near El Paso, Texas. That strip was approximately 101km or 63 miles.

“Let me be clear: if you cross into the National Defense Area, you will be charged to the FULLEST extent of the law,” Hegseth wrote in a social media post.

Hegseth has previously stated that the military will continue to expand such zones until they have achieved “100 percent operational control” of the border.

Trump and his allies have frequently compared undocumented immigration to an “invasion”, and they have used that justification to invoke wartime laws like the Alien Enemies Act of 1798.

In a court brief on behalf of the Trump administration, US Attorney Ryan Ellison argued that the new military zones were a vital bulwark for national security. He also rejected the idea that innocent people might be caught in those areas.

“The New Mexico National Defense Area is a crucial installation necessary to strengthen the authority of servicemembers to help secure our borders and safeguard the country,” Ellison said.

He noted that the government had put up “restricted area” signs along the border. But the public defender’s office in New Mexico argued that the government had not done enough to make it sufficiently clear to migrants in the area that they were entering a military zone.

In the US, the public defenders noted that trespassing requires that the migrants were aware of the restriction and acted “in defiance of that regulation for some nefarious or bad purpose”.

Suspected Vandal Electrocuted While Attempting To Steal Armoured Cable In Jigawa

A suspected vandal was electrocuted while attempting to steal armoured cables from an underground power installation at the Jigawa State Secretariat New Complex in Dutse on Wednesday.

According to the Jigawa State Police Command, the incident occurred at around 10:00 a.m. and was reported by officials from the Ministry of Works.

“A distress call was received regarding an unfortunate incident at the State Secretariat,” the command’s spokesperson, Shiisu Adam, said in a statement issued on Tuesday. “A team of officers led by the Divisional Police Officer of Dutse Division responded swiftly to the scene.”

Upon arrival, the officers found the lifeless body of an unidentified male adult beneath a concrete slab covering armored cable wiring. Preliminary investigations suggest that the man was electrocuted while attempting to vandalize the high-voltage power installation.

“The body, which had already started decomposing, was evacuated to the Dutse General Hospital for medical examination,” SP Shiisu added.

The Police Command condemned the act, warning the public about the dangers of tampering with electrical infrastructure.

“This incident highlights the grave risks associated with vandalizing public property, especially installations connected to live electricity,” the PPRO noted. “We urge the public to steer clear of such hazardous and illegal activities.”

He further emphasized the commitment of the police to safeguarding public infrastructure and ensuring safety across the state.

“We are calling on residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious individuals or movements in their communities to the nearest police station. As the investigation continues, further updates will be made available,” SP Shiisu said.

Authorities have not yet identified the deceased, and investigations are ongoing to determine whether he acted alone or was part of a larger network of vandals.
