On Doc Martin, which aired for ten seasons from 2007 to 2022, Martin, 63, starred alongside dog Dodger, who played his character Martin Ellingham’s canine companion Buddy. Why are relations between Algeria and France so bad?

Rarely have relations between Algeria and France, a country that was once a colony, been straightforward.

Relations appeared to be improving after a rocky period in July when France supported Algeria’s regional rival Morocco over its disputed Western Sahara territory.

A new uprising follows the arrest in France of an Algerian consular official and two other men in April for allegedly helping to kidnap Amir Boukhors, an Algerian government critic, near Paris.

What does Algeria’s new colonizer’s expulsion mean for relations with Algeria, and why are diplomats now being expelled?

Let’s break it down:

Amir Boukhors, who is he?

With more than 1 million TikTok subscribers, Boukhors, or Amir DZ, is an Algerian online critic and influencer who has criticized President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

In 2023, the French government granted Boukhors political asylum.

He is a fraudster and a “terrorist,” according to the Algerian government, who they have been extradite from France since 2016.

Nine times has Algeria tried to extradite Boukhors. France has turned down every attempt.

Why is it that an Algerian consular official allegedly wants to kidnap him?

Boukhors claimed in an interview with Le Parisien that he was stopped by an unmarked car with flashing lights on the evening of April 29, 2024, when he returned to his home in Val-de-Marne near Paris.

He was handcuffed and threw into the vehicle by four men in civilian attire.

They explained to me first that an Algerian official wanted to speak with me and that that was the reason they were taking me. Then they informed me that my plans had changed and that I was traveling to Amsterdam, Boukhors reported to the newspaper.

Boukhors claimed that he was then forced to take sleeping pills and spent more than 27 hours in a “container” before being released without explanation.

Information led to the arrest of three men on April 11 and the fourth man, who is still reportedly at large, was discovered during a subsequent investigation by France’s counterespionage agency.

Two of the men have not been identified in any information. According to French officials, the third was a consular employee from Algeria.

Algeria immediately responded with a statement outright, calling out its official’s involvement and demanding that the person’s arrest be “in public… without notification through the diplomatic channels.”

The statement denied what it claimed was a “far-fetched argument” based solely on Boukhors’ claim that his mobile phone was “found around the home.”

In connection with a terrorist operation, all three suspects were later accused of kidnapping or arbitrary detention.

What was the diplomatic response?

Algeria announced on April 14 that Algerian consular officials had 48 hours to leave.

The Algerian official’s arrest was followed by France’s arrest, which was later confirmed in the statement read on public television.

The arrest was intended to “humiliate Algeria, without taking into account this agent’s consular status, and without regard for any diplomatic customs and practices,” according to the statement.

The following day, France kicked off 12 Algerian consular officers from its territory and recalled its ambassador from Algiers.

Algeria should “resume dialogue” and “take responsibility for the degradation in bilateral relations,” according to a statement from the office of French President Emmanuel Macron.

Why have Algerian and French relations historically been poor?

Algerian civilians were killed and a class structure was established by France, which France colonized for 132 years, resulting in the death of European settlers and their descendants.

Algeria was viewed as a fundamental part of France by the French, who refused to leave. France finally left in 1962 after a war of independence. Due to the number of people who were killed by France during the struggle for independence, Algeria is still known as the “country of a million martyrs.”

However, there is still a way out. Not just between France and Algeria, but also across the entire region, is the Western Sahara’s conflict.

The conflict between Algeria and Morocco is at the heart of the country’s poor relations, which includes the disputed territory of Western Sahara. While Algeria supports the pro-independence Polisario Front and has taken in tens of thousands of Sahrawi refugees, Rabat claims the area as its own and occupies the majority of it.

What position does France hold regarding the Western Sahara?

Despite the United Nations not acknowledging Rabat’s claim to be the sovereign of the Western Sahara, France has largely supported Morocco. And last year, Macron asserted that France backed Moroccan rule over the Western Sahara.

Algeria recalled its ambassador at the time and expressed its “deep disapproval” of France’s “unexpected, ill-timed, and counterproductive” decision to support Morocco’s plan for autonomy in Western Sahara.

However, it was believed that since then, things have improved between the two.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot stated in an interview conducted in early April that “we are reactivating as of right now all the mechanisms of cooperation in all sectors.” The curtain has been lifted, and we are returning to normal, in accordance with President Tebboune’s statement.

However, the Boukhors case and subsequent diplomatic expels have demonstrated that the curtain has come back in.

Amanda Holden and Alan Carr are one step closer to selling their Spanish telly renovation for a massive profit. The presenting duo bought a rundown townhouse in Granada and overhauled it for their BBC series Amanda and Alan’s Spanish job.

Buying the shabby building for €65,000 (£55,000), it was on the market for £208,355. Up for sale for just over a month, it looks to have been snapped up by one lucky buyer. The house is now ‘under offer’ on Rightmove. A source said: “Their bold decorating has pulled in a sale very fast and people love their DIY style!” All proceeds are going to Comic Relief and Children in Need.

A 90-minute drive from Malaga airport, they transformed it from a decaying shell that hadn’t been lived in for 35 years into a sophisticated, three-bedroom home in the main square of the historic village of Mocln. Amanda, 54, and Alan, 48, have sensitively restored the house to life while carefully preserving some of the building’s original features and integrity.

It has two bathrooms, two of which are in the Mediterranean style, with the option to add a small plunge pool. It has three floors and is double-fronted. A new roof was added as part of the property restoration.

The bathrooms and kitchen use hand-crafted tiles from the nearby Cabra, Bert & May factory, and were inspired by Andalucia’s culture and art. The pair’s mission to give the house a new life was followed by viewers.

This Spanish townhouse, which had been uninhabited for decades, was given a new lease of life by Amanda and Alan.

In episode one, Amanda joyfully declared, “I’ve found the most amazing house. Because it’s so large, a third project must have a true WOW factor. Really ambitious. This will be according to the Bible.

However, as they learned what a bad state it was in, some issues came up along the way. You don’t notice any flaws in someone until you meet them, Amanda said. The situation applies to a house. You go round and say, “Oh my God, this is amazing, I love this, I love this,” before gradually turning into a nightmare.

“Amanda has chosen the house this year,” explained Alan. “She’s got a great eye, but she loves a challenge, it’s in her DNA. Every time you open the door there is another mess. A courtyard, an overgrown tree, some stairs that probably go up to heaven?” When they discover the ruined roof, they think they’ve seen the worst of it. But Alan finds an unwelcome mess in the bath and jokes, “It’s weird because a lot of the decor is dated, but the turd is fresh!”

Similar programmes on the BBC have previously seen the Britain’s Got Talent judge and comedian renovate homes in Sicily and Tuscany, after finding the properties for just 1 euro. They’ve announced a fourth series, this time in Greece.

Russell wants ‘action’ from FIA on swearing ban

Grand Prix of Miami

Miami International Autodrome Location: 2 – 4 May Race start time: 2:00 BST on Sunday

Following FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem’s pledge to revisit the governing body’s swearing ban, George Russell says, “words don’t mean anything.”

In order to codify a number of penalties for drivers who criticize or swear before Ben Sulayem’s FIA statutes in the winter,

The Emirati, however, stated in a recent Instagram post that he was “considering making improvements” to the rules “following constructive feedback from drivers across our seven FIA world championships.”

The Grand Prix Drivers’ Association (GPDA) director, Russell, a Mercedes driver, declined to comment on Ben Sulayem’s statement.

He claimed that “it’s being taken into account.” The phrase “the words don’t mean anything until the change is made” means.

He claimed that there had never been any discussions with the FIA regarding the situation since the drivers wrote an open letter to the FIA in November, calling them “adults.”

We haven’t spoken informally since the open letter that was distributed, Russell continued. I’m not entirely certain whether that is the response.

The FIA has provided no further information about potential changes to the FIA’s statutes that might be made at the General Assembly in June, but it has provided them with that information by supplying members with the details.

When asked why the drivers’ collective body, the GPDA, had no formal relationship with the FIA, Russell responded, “It is unprecedented times we have been in the last 18 months with what has been changing and what is happening.

The GPDA was not established to discuss politics. It was intended to discuss racing and safety. We are here to discuss racing, the safest cars, the best engineering, and yet we talk about fines, punishments, and swearing, and things I don’t want to talk about.

Ben Sulayem was elected in December 2021, and Russell’s remarks make blatant reference to the string of controversy that has permeated the country.

His views on women have been included in these developments, as have questions about the president’s finances, the dismissal of several senior officials, the dismissal of several senior figures, the FIA’s whistleblower allegations against him, the dismissal of several senior figures, and a lawsuit against the FIA brought by Susie Wolff, the director of the F1 Academy for aspiring female drivers.

The most recent was Robert Reid’s resignation as deputy president of sport last month, followed by Natalie Robyn’s first public address since she was forced to step down last summer after only 18 months in the position.

Lewis Hamilton, the driver of Ferrari, observed that the GPDA was very cohesive. We want to collaborate closely with the FIA. We all want to collaborate to improve the sport.

Over time, that communication has presented some challenges.

After a 15-point deduction appeal was rejected, Hamilton Academical’s relegation from the Scottish Championship was confirmed by an independent tribunal.

The South Lanarkshire club fell to the bottom of the Scottish Professional Football League after being ordered to pay a number of violations last month.

Accies are eight points adrift of Lanarkshire rivals Airdrieonians with one game left before Falkirk’s leaders take the field on Friday.

The board will communicate with supporters in early stages, but SPFL regulations prevent it from making any further comments on the subject.

Hamilton was found guilty of four offenses, including not paying players and acting in good faith when negotiating with the governing body to remove a previous transfer ban, by an independent disciplinary tribunal.

The other charges are:

Following Accies’ announcement to move to Clyde’s former home at Broadwood Stadium in Cumbernauld, the appeal decision comes just hours after they reveal they plan to leave New Douglas Park in the middle of a dispute over the stadium’s ownership and rental.
