Syrian Druze leader condemns government over sectarian violence

After dozens of people were killed in two days of sectarian clashes south of Damascus, a Druze minority leader in Syria has condemned attacks against his region.

Sheikh Hikmat al-Hijri on Thursday referred to the “genocidal campaign” against the Syrian Druze community in Jaramana and Sahnaya earlier this week.

According to the Ministry of Information in Syria, two separate attacks resulted in the deaths of 11 members of the country’s security forces.

At least 101 people were killed in fighting between security forces, allied fighters, and local Druze groups, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a war monitor in the UK.

The SOHR, which relies on a network of sources in Syria, reported that Husam Warwar, the former mayor of Sahnaya, had been killed along with 30 government loyalists, 21 Druze fighters, and 10 civilians.

It reported 40 Druze fighters died in an “ambush” on Wednesday in the southern province of Sweida, the heartland of the Druze minority, along with 35 others in an “ambush” on the Sweida-Damascus road.

After a man’s audio clip of a man criticizing Islam’s Prophet Muhammad first appeared on social media around midnight on Monday, the fighting broke out. A Druze scholar was responsible for the audio. However, the scholar, Marwan Kiwan, claimed in a video that many Sunni Muslims found offensive on social media that he was not to blame for the audio.

A deal was reached between Druze dignitaries and official representatives on Wednesday afternoon, according to the Syrian government, which allowed security forces and pro-government fighters to enter Sahnaya and allow Druze gunmen to leave the streets.

Videos made on social media made offensive remarks about sectarian remarks made by what appeared to be pro-government armed groups beating Druze men they had captured in Sahnaya.

According to al-Hijri’s statement, “This collective killing is systematic, clear, visible, and documented.” Because the government doesn’t use its own citizens through loyal, extremist gangs that the government calls itself a government and who they are after the massacre, they no longer trust us as a group.

The new government, which overthrew Bashar al-Assad in December, faces a significant challenge due to the violence. More than 1,700 civilians, mostly Alawite, were killed in a series of massacres in Syria’s Alawite heartland on the Mediterranean coast in March, according to the SOHR.

Syrian authorities object to foreign intervention.

Israeli officials have endorsed the Druze, with Defense Minister Israel Katz stating that if Syria’s new administration fails to protect the minority population, it will “with significant force” respond.

Katz later stated that if the Syrian regime fails to stop the Druze attacks, Israel will act decisively.

Asaad al-Shaibani, the country’s foreign minister, stated on X that “national unity is the solid foundation for any process of stability or revival” on Thursday, reiterating Syria’s opposition to international intervention.

He continued, “Any request for external assistance, under any pretext or slogan, only leads to further division and division.”

Most Druze spiritual leaders and factions have chosen to communicate privately with the new government, but concerns have grown even more acute as a result of the government’s decision to launch a series of targeted revenge attacks on the Alawite minority group.

Videos of Alawite victims being burned down and bloodied on the streets were widely circulated. Many Alawite have fled south to neighboring Lebanon because they are too afraid to go back.

Manchester United beat Athletic Club 3-0 to hone in on Europa League final

Manchester United won 3-0 in the Europa League opener at Athletic Bilbao with three first-half goals to put them on the verge of reaching the title match.

Veteran midfielder Casemiro took the lead 30 minutes into the match in a raucous San Memes atmosphere on Thursday, with supporters wishing for their first-ever European trophy.

Five minutes later, when Bilbao defender Daniel Vivian was sent off for fouling Rasmus Hojlund in the penalty area, United, who are having a terrible domestically, were given a second boost.

Before the break, the United fans at the top of the table were in Dreamland as captain Fernandes fought through to seal the victory and perhaps even the tie.

With a weak second half, Bilbao struggled to recover from the defeat, leaving United with the most unlikely first-leg victory.

Harry Maguire, a United defender, stated to TNT Sports, “Of course it’s a great start, to get a victory here, and score three goals and keep a clean sheet.

Everyone is anticipating what we will endure, under all the pressure. We must properly prepare, and if we do that, we will have a good chance of succeeding.

One foot in the door of the finished product.

United can forget that they are on track to record their worst Premier League points total this season thanks to the Europa League, which has somewhat provided them with a safe haven.

United traveled to Bilbao as the only unbeaten team in any European competition, but they faced their toughest challenge yet, with Bilbao currently sitting fourth in LaLiga and having the worst defense in the division.

The first chance was better for the Bilbao players because they fueled the crowd’s enthusiasm early on. Victor Lindelof saved United’s blushes with a timely block on the line, but Inaki Williams should have headed home from a close-range header.

However, Casemiro did so on time to turn the momentum in United’s favor. After consulting with the pitch-side monitor, Norwegian referee Espen Eskas determined that Vivian had denied Hojlund a clear goal-scoring opportunity, branded a red card, and pointed to the spot.

Despite the ear-splitting whistles from the conceited crowd, Bruno Fernandes showed incredible composure as he calmly stroked home the penalty. When the United skipper rushed onto Manuel Ugarte’s film to add a game-clinching third, the whistles barely ceased.

In their seven Europa League games in 2025, United has scored more goals than they have in their 15 Premier League games this year, to highlight the contrast between United’s domestic and continental campaigns.

Since Ruben Amorim became coach, they have won more Europa League games than they have in the Premier League.

Casemiro’s second-half header came off the post, missing the mark, and could have even added a fourth.

Chelsea On Brink Of Conference League Final After Thrashing Djurgarden

Chelsea strolled to a comfortable 4-1 win at Djurgarden in the first leg of their UEFA Conference League semi-final on Thursday to all but book their spot in the final.

In the other semi-final, Spain’s Real Betis take a 2-1 lead into the return fixture against two-time runners-up Fiorentina.

First-half goals from Jadon Sancho and Noni Madueke put Chelsea in control in Sweden, before Nicolas Jackson grabbed a brace midway through the second period.

“It was (a perfect night), an important semi-final,” Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca told TNT Sports.

“It’s a good result, but we have the experience from the Legia Warsaw game, where we won 3-0 there and we struggled a little bit (Chelsea’s only loss in the tournament came at home in the return fixture), so we need to be focused on the second leg.”

Maresca’s side have one foot in the final of the Conference League in their debut campaign in the third-tier European competition.

Lifting the trophy in the Polish city of Wroclaw on May 28 would add another continental title to the London club’s haul of two Champions Leagues, a pair of Europa Leagues and two UEFA Cup Winners’ Cups.

Their opponents, on the other hand, don’t quite boast the same European pedigree, and in making the last four became the first Swedish side to play a semi-final in Europe since 1986/87.

To further add to Djurgarden’s underdog status, coach Jani Honkavaara only had 14 senior players fit to call upon for the visit of the Premier League giants.

Chelsea took the lead via Sancho on 12 minutes as the winger collected a lofted pass in the box and slotted the ball past the goalkeeper before the retreating Marcus Danielson sliced his attempted clearance against his own arm and into the goal.

The goal settled Chelsea, who slowly got more accustomed to the artificial surface in Stockholm and began to dominate Djurgarden.

Madueke made that dominance pay two minutes prior to half-time when he opened up his body to feint a cross-goal shot with his left foot, before sweeping a first-time finish inside the near post.

 Jackson at the double

As the interval loomed, Djurgarden nearly caught Chelsea with a sucker-punch, only for the English club’s Swedish-born ‘keeper Filip Jorgensen to readjust brilliantly and tip Tokmac Nguen’s deflected strike behind for a corner.

Jackson put Chelsea three goals to the good one minute before the hour as he tapped in from close range following a defensive mix-up.

The Senegalese striker doubled up six minutes later, unleashing a fizzing shot with his left foot from the edge of the box.

Teenager Isak Alemayehu Mulugeta snatched a consolation for Djurgarden in the 68th minute with a powerful downward header for his first senior goal.

“Very good performance, the most important thing is that we won. It is one step forward and we hope to reach the final,” said Jackson.

In Andalusia, Betis had a dream start when Abde Ezzalzouli smashed the ball in off the crossbar on six minutes following battling centre-forward play by the in-form Cedric Bakambu.

Fiorentina came within a whisker of equalising midway through the first half, but Rolando Mandragora’s powerful header zipped inches wide of goalkeeper Fran Vieites’ upright.

Former Barcelona centre-half Marc Bartra had a chance to double Betis’ lead at the end of the first period but blasted over from a corner.

Manchester United loanee Antony then did get a second for the hosts with a fierce right-footed effort from outside the box which flew beyond David de Gea’s reach and into the top corner in the 64th minute.

Fiorentina halved the lead against the run of play with 17 minutes remaining as Luca Ranieri slotted home after being teed up by Robin Gosens.

The second leg ties will take place next Thursday.

Man Utd Beat 10-Man Bilbao To Close In On Europa League Final

Bruno Fernandes struck twice as Manchester United put one foot in the Europa League final with a clinical away performance to beat 10-man Athletic Bilbao 3-0 on Thursday.

The fervent home fans were enraged when Athletic defender Daniel Vivian was sent off for pulling back Rasmus Hojlund and Fernandes slotted home the resulting penalty, after Casemiro had opened the scoring against the run of play in the semi-final first leg.

Fernandes rolled in a third before half-time as Ruben Amorim’s side moved a step closer to the final, to be held at Athletic’s San Mames stadium.

The hosts have been dreaming of winning a first European trophy on their own soil but their hopes were demolished by United’s professional display in the north of Spain — and Athletic’s supporters argued, the refereeing.

Languishing in 14th in the Premier League, Champions League qualification for United is only possible with a Europa League triumph, as is access to the £100 million ($133 million) honeypot it entails.

Despite regularly crumbling under pressure this season, the Red Devils — who produced a stunning comeback against Lyon in the quarter-finals — first survived and then thrived in a hostile environment.

“We looked a little bit nervous at times in the first 20 minutes… we weathered the storm and we knew we’d get our chance,” Man United’s Harry Maguire told TNT Sports.

“It was a clinical first half, professional second half… It’s a great victory in the end but there’s another big game next week.”

With May 1 a bank holiday in Spain the streets of Bilbao were filled with red-and-white striped shirts from the morning onwards, in party mode.

The San Mames was rocking as fans greeted their heroes, all of them born or raised in the Basque country, as per the club’s century-long policy.

Alejandro Garnacho’s early strike gave the hosts a scare but the forward was offside.

Beyond that the early stages of the match for United were about gritting their teeth and holding off the Basque side and their raucous supporters.

 Red card rocks hosts

Alex Berenguer forced a smart low save from Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana, and Inaki Williams headed narrowly over.

Victor Lindelof made a vital block to thwart Berenguer after Nico Williams fed his brother Inaki, who was given too much space on the right wing.

The hosts were ascendant and when former Real Madrid midfielder Casemiro opened the scoring for United it came as a shock.

(Photo by ANDER GILLENEA / AFP)

Just as much of a surprise was the way United created the goal, with centre-back Maguire dribbling down the right flank as Mikel Jaureguizar floundered in his wake.

The defender fizzed a cross into the area, which Manuel Ugarte flicked on to the back post for Casemiro to nod home from close range.

It seemed like a smash-and-grab but soon United had a second, when Vivian was penalised for pulling back Hojlund as he tried to connect with a cross.

The defender was sent off to add insult to injury, as Athletic fans howled in anger, and Fernandes rolled home from the spot.

Athletic coach Ernesto Valverde made a double substitution, trying to stem the bleeding, but his team shipped a third before half-time.

Ugarte’s clever backheel played Fernandes through on goal and he stroked home with ease.

Noussair Mazraoui crashed a shot off the crossbar from distance as United almost grabbed a fourth before the break.

Norwegian referee Espen Eskas and his colleagues were barracked by the home fans, seeing their aspirations to glory evaporate before their eyes.

They were further enraged, waving anything white to show their disgust, when Maroan Sannadi tumbled under pressure from Maguire as he ran towards goal but no foul was awarded.

United largely controlled the game in the second half but they could not add a fourth despite probing.

The second leg takes place next Thursday at Old Trafford, ahead of the final on May 21 against Tottenham or Bodo/Glimt.

“At the slightest contact (Hojlund) let himself fall and the bad luck is that the penalty was given,” said Inaki Williams.

“We weren’t particularly great, so we shouldn’t make excuses — we’re three goals down but we’re capable of mounting a comeback.”

Women Shouldn’t Be Shamed For Fertility Struggles – Chimamanda

Chimamanda Adichie, a well-known Nigerian author, has revealed details of her personal journey as a mother and why she chose to announce the birth of her twin boys via surrogacy in the media.

The 47-year-old author stated that she hoped that her candor would lessen the societal pressure that many women experience regarding fertility during her debut live broadcast of the #WithChude talk show on Sunday.

“I thought there were many women who would then face pressure from people who would say, “Look, Chimamanda is 47 and she has children at that age, what about you?” she stated.

The award-winning author, Ivara Esege, who is married to a medical doctor, called for the end of the stigma that surrounds women’s reproductive health and fertility issues.

“I just think it’s too much of a burden for women,” she said, “because there is so much shame around fertility issues.” I don’t believe in that kind of shame because “women are ashamed when they have fibroids, and women are ashamed when they have difficulties getting pregnant.”

Are Women Permitted to Have Their Own Dreams, Wonders Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie?

The author of “Half of a Yellow Sun” stated that her hope was that her candor would bring normalcy to conversations about unconventional paths to motherhood, despite her initial regrets for disclosing details about the birth of her children.

She said, “My boys are so precious to me.” And I detested the politicization of anything about them. So, on the one hand, I thought, “I wish I hadn’t talked about it,” but there’s no way I’m going to lie about how they were created.

If there is anything positive to be gained from this, I’m hoping that more women will be less repressed about discussing motherhood through unconventional means. I don’t believe anyone would benefit from our society’s judgmental attitude.

Adichie gave details about the birth of her twins earlier in February, but she chose to keep their identities a secret to prevent the media from seeing them.

She added that many Nigerians were unaware that she had married in 2019, and that she preferred to avoid the public’s view of her private life.

Adichie reiterated that she has no regrets about speaking out or the negative online reviews she received.

She said, “My daughter and my babies are the best gift I’ve ever received.” No regrets, then.

Sutton’s predictions v singer Sasha Keable

The Premier League’s bottom two meet at King Power Stadium on Saturday, so will Leicester or Southampton manage to pick up a rare victory?

“Saints still need a point to beat Robbie Savage’s useless Derby side, and avoid a share of the ‘worst Premier League team ever’ trophy,” said BBC Sport football expert Chris Sutton.

“But it says it all about how bad both teams have been this season that I still find it hard to back Leicester, even against them.

“The Foxes have not even scored at home in the league since 8 December, but if they can’t score there against Southampton then they might as well close the whole club down.”

Sutton is making predictions for all 380 Premier League games this season, against a variety of guests.

For week 35, he takes on British-Colombian singer-songwriter Sasha Keable, who supports Arsenal.

Sasha’s new single, Act Right, is out now. It has already racked up more than 1.4m views on TikTok.

Do you agree with their scores? You can make your own predictions below.

The most popular scoreline selected for each game is used in the scoreboards and tables at the bottom of this page.

Sasha KeableSasha Keable

Sasha is a singer now but grew up in the centre of the football world – her stepdad, Nick Broad, was head of sports science at Blackburn Rovers and Chelsea, and was working with Carlo Ancelotti as performance manager at Paris St-Germain when he died in a car accident in 2013.

“I’ve seen all sides of football, not just as a fan,” she told BBC Sport. “When Carlo got fired by Chelsea, my stepdad was fired too. He didn’t know what he was going to do, but then Carlo went to PSG and asked him to go with him.

“Sadly he passed away while he was in Paris but we are still close to the Ancelotti family. He and Carlo were such good friends.

“I look back now and my stepdad was a real pioneer in his work in sports science and nutrition. The things he introduced, like GPS tracking in training and collecting cardio data, were all new then but they are industry standard now.

“It’s incredible to see his work live on in that way. Some of his old friends and colleagues reach out to me now when they see me doing my own thing on social media and talk about how his work was incredible.

Before becoming a singer, Sasha dreamed of being a footballer herself. Now she settles for collecting shirts instead, with a Tino Asprilla Colombia shirt from 1994 taking pride of place.

“I played all the time when I was a kid, from the age of about six,” explained Sasha.

“It was a bit different for girls then because it was before the women’s game really took off and you didn’t really have a route to becoming a professional in this country. I wanted to go to the United States to play.

“I was quite a tomboy so I used to play with the boys all the time – I had to. We did not even have a girls team at my school until my friends and I asked to play with the boys and, after that, they formed a team for us.

“Fortunately it’s all changed now and football is so much more accessible for girls. If you don’t have the chance to try something, how do you know if you will love it?”

What information do we collect from this quiz?

This should be a great game, because Wolves are so powerful and they will have no fear at all after winning six games in a row.

But Manchester City have looked much more solid in the past few weeks and they are on a bit of a roll themselves, with four successive wins in all competitions.

Pep Guardiola’s side will look to control this game, the same way they did in the first half of their FA Cup semi-final win over Nottingham Forest, but I don’t think they will find it easy to keep Wolves quiet.

Still, I went against City in their last home game, against Aston Villa, and I was wrong. I am not going to make the same mistake again.

Sutton’s prediction: 2-1

What information do we collect from this quiz?

It would be easy to say the wheels have come off at Aston Villa, wouldn’t it?

In the past couple of weeks, they have gone out of the Champions League and FA Cup, and losing their last Premier League game has left them playing catch-up in the top-five race.

I don’t think Unai Emery’s side will crumble from here, though, even if Marcus Rashford’s season-ending injury is a big blow.

Villa need to win this, and they also need a big performance from Ollie Watkins. If he starts banging the goals in again then that would be a huge boost for their run-in.

Fulham are a nightmare to predict, as I’ve mentioned in previous weeks, and they are certainly capable of getting something here.

I don’t think Villa can keep a clean sheet – which probably means they will stop Fulham scoring – but I have a feeling things will click for them in front of goal.

Also, they are at home too so, if they need them, their fans can help to get them over the line.

Sutton’s prediction: 3-1

What information do we collect from this quiz?

I am covering this game for BBC Radio 5 Live and I am really looking forward to going to Goodison Park again.

Everything points towards a home win, despite Everton losing their previous two games.

Ipswich are definitely down now and, while they won’t throw in the towel, they might be a little less spirited now they know they are relegated.

Their confidence has been sapped over the course of the season and, after watching them recently, I can’t back them to get anything here.

They were flimsy against Arsenal, then well beaten by Newcastle, and it would be a shock if they scored at all, let alone break my record for the fastest goal scored by an away player at Goodison.

Everton have stuttered in the past couple of weeks but I don’t think that is a bad thing for David Moyes.

He has over-achieved since taking charge in January, when the reality is that he has got the same group of players as his predecessor, Sean Dyche, and there needs to be a lot of work done on improving that squad in the summer.

Sutton’s prediction: 2-0

What information do we collect from this quiz?

Leicester have been rotten but, somehow, Southampton have been even worse.

It’s sad to see Jamie Vardy leaving the Foxes at the end of the season, but maybe this might be the send-off he deserves. I am going with him to score the winner.

These two teams actually served up a thriller at St Mary’s Stadium back in October, when Vardy got one of Leicester’s goals as they fought back from 2-0 down to win 3-2.

I am expecting the same outcome here, just with a lot less excitement. The readers will go for a draw, I am sure of it, but I am pretty confident about Leicester taking this one.

Sutton’s prediction: 1-0

What information do we collect from this quiz?

We know how dangerous Bournemouth are, because they beat Arsenal in October, and if Mikel Arteta rests players then this game becomes even harder for the Gunners.

It’s a tricky situation for Arteta, because he will want to head to Paris St-Germain for the second leg of their Champions League semi-final with a bit of momentum, but he has got to balance that with the risk of injury to his key players.

Bournemouth’s form has improved of late, and the circumstances mean they definitely have a decent chance of doing the double over Arsenal this season.

This all boils down to what the Arsenal team is, so it is difficult to make a call without knowing that, but they are at home and even if they are not at full strength then I can still see them getting a draw.

Sutton’s prediction: 1-1

Sunday, 4 May

What information do we collect from this quiz?

We know Manchester United are going to make changes here, because seeing out the second leg of their Europa League semi-final with Athletic Bilbao is their priority.

Ruben Amorim’s side nicked a point at the very end of their game at Bournemouth last weekend, which sparked mass celebrations, but I really don’t see them doing the same against Brentford – they won’t be getting the bunting out this time.

The Bees are such a dangerous team when they come forward and they will keep on attacking United. Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa should get plenty of chances and I can see them getting a goal or two between them.

Sutton’s prediction: 2-0

What information do we collect from this quiz?

Brighton got back to winning ways last weekend thanks to Carlos Baleba’s brilliant late strike against West Ham.

The Seagulls beat Newcastle at St James’ Park earlier in the season too, but that was before Eddie Howe’s side hit their stride, and it is a big ask for Brighton to repeat that result.

Newcastle were just relentless in their win over Ipswich and another three points here would be massive in their bid for a top-five finish – I don’t think they will get them, but we will see a few goals.

Sutton’s prediction: 2-2

What information do we collect from this quiz?

This is 17th versus 16th in the Premier League which tells you how bad both teams have been this season.

Everyone knows Tottenham’s focus will be on their Europa League semi-final second leg with Bodo/Glimt so I think West Ham boss Graham Potter needs a result here more than Ange Postecoglou.

Potter’s results have been poor since he took over from Julen Lopetegui in January and the Hammers fans have not had the upturn they wanted in the way their team play either.

Spurs can still be dangerous even when they are out of form but Ange is not going to pick his strongest team. That gives West Ham a better chance of getting the win they badly need, but I don’t see them doing it in style.

Sutton’s prediction: 2-1

What information do we collect from this quiz?

I would usually be asking which Chelsea side will turn up, but that applies to Liverpool too this week.

Arne Slot’s side could have been out all week celebrating their title win and we don’t know how that will affect them.

You often play at your best when you have been on the lash in a scenario like theirs. For example, some of my best games for Celtic came after nights out where we had won something and were allowed to have a couple of beers, but I don’t know what to expect here.

Chelsea have nicked a couple of results recently, to stay in the race for the top five, but their performances have not been too convincing and their fans still don’t seem to have taken to Enzo Maresca’s playing style.

This is not the test for them that it would be if Liverpool were trying to close out the title but I don’t think Slot is the type to let anyone take their foot off the gas. He will put out a strong team and even if they play with more freedom, I still think Liverpool will leave with the points.

Sutton’s prediction: 1-2

What information do we collect from this quiz?

Crystal Palace will be on a high after booking their place in the FA Cup final, so this is another very tricky game for Nottingham Forest, who slipped up at home against Brentford on Thursday.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side will have to be stubborn and resolute to get anything at Selhurst Park. They have shown that kind of character plenty of times already this season but they really need it now.

Looking at the race for the top five you feel like every team involved needs to win every game, but of course that is not going to happen, and I can see my boyhood team Forest dropping more points here. I just hope it doesn’t prove crucial for them.

Sutton’s prediction: 1-1

How did Sutton do last week?

Chris got five correct results with one exact score from the nine Premier League games he predicted in week 34, giving him a total of 80 points.

He beat his guest, golf hero Lee Westwood, who got four correct results with no exact scores, leaving him on 40 points and tied with the BBC readers, who also got five correct results with one exact score.

Westwood and the BBC readers were wrong about both FA Cup semi-finals, while Chris correctly picked City to beat Forest and wrongly thought Aston Villa would beat Crystal Palace. Those ties do not count towards the weekly totals.

The other game from week 34, Manchester City’s 2-1 win over Aston Villa, took place on 22 April and does not count towards the weekly result either.
