England bid to move on from Australia thrashing – but against whom?

Images courtesy of Getty

The proverb “What happens in Las Vegas, stays in Las Vegas” is well-known to the millions of visitors to Sin City each year.

There is no such luxury for England’s female rugby league players.

In March, their Vegas experience, which was a humiliating 90-4 defeat by world champions Australia, was broadcast live to a worldwide audience.

In the wake of this, one wonders what will happen next, whether the Jillaroos’ previously planned tour will go together with the men, and how England can close the international gap.

England’s men will play Australia in an autumn home series, but nothing has been announced for the women.

England needed a yardstick, so Hardman was it.

One problem for England is the limited number of northern hemisphere opponents that they face on equal footing as they prepare for World Cups and significant tests.

It costs a lot to attract a touring country like Tonga or Papua New Guinea. The idea of going south also applies.

Wales and France have won their matches with impressive scores, which may have contributed to England’s Vegas defeat being so unexpected.

Stuart Barrow’s staff included St Helens head coach Dec Hardman, who has spent years working with England internationals like Vicky Whitfield and Jodie Cunningham at the club level.

And he thinks facing the Jillaroos was the best choice.

According to Hardman, “the only way we could ever predict where we would be is through that game.” “Was the right season to be here?” Not sure yet. What time of day is ideal?

When you play that game, you do get a reality check, but occasionally you need to go and make yourself hungry for what you’ll experience in 18 months.

“These girls could play on Sunday, a match against Australia, a match against the Kiwis on a Wednesday, and a game against Tonga, Samoa, or the Cook Islands the following week. How do we bridge that perceived conflict of competitiveness?

Hardman doesn’t claim to know the answers, but he thinks listening to the players is a part of the solution.

The players have an opinion, Hardman continued.

They must tell you how they are feeling because they are living it, according to the author.

They let you know what they think will happen next, and how. I’m not sure if the Rugby Football League [RFL] can live up to those expectations.

Disparities provide justifications for gaps.

In women’s rugby league, great things have been accomplished, including moving the game from muddy, sometimes dreaded park pitches to Super League stadiums and bringing it to Wembley in the Challenge Cup.

Talent pools are being created as a result of rugby league’s grassroots adoption, improved facilities for teams, and more professional players being cared for.

However, the game is undoubtedly not a profession because fully-paid players make their living from playing the game.

While the top clubs may make some payments to players and consider signing contracts an option, the Women’s Super League does not. Players must balance work and training.

The Australian National Rugby League women’s division, known as NRLW, is a small, yet highly competitive league where Australian players from New South Wales and Queensland, both major states, compete in fierce State of Origin contests and are compensated for it.

Hollie-Mae Dodd, Georgia Roche, and Paige Travis have all been signed by NRLW clubs, and England players have begun to move south to join their club revolution.

It’s like Saints’ men are playing Thatto Heath, they say.

St. Helens back-rower Emily Rudge, who hasn’t made the Vegas team since she was 16 years old, is acutely aware of the disparities.

She told BBC Sport, “The Women’s Super League and the NRLW are wildly different.” “On the surface, it appears very professional.” Although we are associated with Super League organizations, our main occupations are full-time employment and evening training.

In terms of setup, it’s not anywhere near Australia. In some ways, I was considering Saints men playing Thatto Heath, who are full-time employees and practice twice per week. What are your expectations?

You’ve got full-time professional athletes playing against women who, regrettably, lack the same resources as their counterparts. It immediately morphs into a mismatch.

It just appears like 90-4 is a huge scoreline without having any inside knowledge of that. We are constructing. The women’s game improves year after year, but so do they.

Learning from the lessons

There were always going to be different responses to such a defeat because the England camp had a variety of ages and personalities.

Bella Sykes, a Leeds Rhinos hooker, praised “the experience of being drawn into the drama and excitement of the event” while playing for the team in Vegas.

The actual test was difficult, but it also provided some insight.

According to Sykes, “It’s important for the staff and players to reflect on why we got that result.” However, in a more general sense, the RFL are looking at that from the players’ perspectives in terms of reviewing the league, reviewing how the international program operates, and as long as we can learn from it.

According to the group discussion we had at the previous camp, the experience had a significant impact on players, depending on their age and level of experience.

The players’ reactions to it varied. Although I’m still very optimistic about the entire experience, I don’t know why some of the girls are.

As a young player going through, “they had the courage to speak out and demand what changes they believed needed to be done,” he said. “They were inspiring.

Kim Kardashian’s Paris robber admits ‘regret’ as he stands trial £7.5m jewellery heist

A criminal has finally admitted his guilt at robbing reality TV star Kim Kardashian at gunpoint in Paris. Career criminal Yunnis Abbas, 71, previously wrote a “boastful and mocking” book about the terrifying incident and is facing life behind bars.

However, he confessed to a court yesterday: “I do regret what I did, it opened my eyes.” In the scary robbery, Abbas was part of a gang that bound and gagged the SKIMS founder during Paris Fashion Week in 2016. In total, £7.5 million of jewellery was stolen and never recovered. Kardashian’s engagement ring from her then-husband, Kanye West, was among the items taken.

According to the BBC, the morning after the robbery, Abbas’ wife was watching the news coverage of the Kardashian robbery and told her husband: “This has you written all over it.”

Abbas is one of the ten defendants facing charges in the Paris Assizes. After his DNA was discovered at the crime scene, he admitted to being a “lookout” for the robbery. After his DNA was discovered on the duct tape that ties Kardashian to her, he was detained in 2017.

I Held Up Kim Kardashian was Abbas’ book while he was incarcerated and then released on bail. His involvement in the crime was described in the writing. However, he now responded, “I do have regrets,” when Judge David De Pas inquired whether he ever felt sympathy for his victims.

During a time in prison, Abbas previously had a triple bypass operation. He continued, “Before I didn’t.” However, I do regret what I did this time. My eyes have opened as a result of this case. It was a constant source of conversation on television, which led me to ask some questions.

And he denied that the Kardashian incident made his book sound like he was proud of it. He explained in the book how he yelled at Ms. Kardashian because she attempted to dial 911 during an attack in France.

He also made fun of the actress for posting her jewelry online. When he made the book public, he said, “I was there to collect it, and that was that.”

Abbas has been imprisoned for 17 years total for crimes, including robbery, since then. He claimed to be accustomed to living in a cell.

One of the three men assigned to the Kardashian residence at the time of the assignment was Abbas. The second person is then said to have entered her room, where she was alone, to commit the robbery.

Abbas is said to have escaped on a bike but fell off, causing him to lose a necklace with diamonds. The item was discovered the following morning.

Aomar A. Khedache, 70, is the only other defendant to so far admit guilt in the crime. One woman is one of the eight people who continue to deny any wrongdoing.

The trial will continue until May 23. Kardashian is scheduled to travel to Paris for testimony the following month.

Spice Girls’ Geri Horner and Mel B’s worst fight ever – “She will hate me for this”

Geri Horner and Mel B’s turbulent relationship has previously been left hanging in the balance after a string of stormy rows between the Spice Girls’ two biggest personalities

A much-teased Spice Girls reunion tour looks set to be tentatively back on once again, with four stars agreeing to load up the Spice Bus once again. However, there is one member who won’t be there with Victoria Beckham said to have had a frosty response to the talks.

Sadly for fans, Posh Spice cannot bring herself to take part in the comeback to make the pop group’s 30th anniversary. A reunion has been much hyped over the years with the band previously getting together in 2007 with Victoria and again in 2019 without her.

This time it’s Geri Horner who is apparently steering the ship and will be meeting band guru Simon Fuller in Miami to begin talks.

Last night a source said: “There have been rumours swirling for months, but Geri has always been too busy and had other things on, preventing her from saying Yes. Nothing is yet confirmed but Geri and Simon are back in touch with a myriad of exciting ideas.”

The tour will see the Geri reunite with Mel B, Mel C and Emma Bunton on stage – putting behind them a series of stormy rows – not least between two of the group’s most outspoken members Geri and Mel B.

The duo only just managed to salvage their friendship after Mel sensationally revealed that she and Geri had a secret lesbian fling at the height of the band’s fame.

Article continues below

Mel said Geri would ‘kill her’ for the accusation, but admitted she, Geri and all the Spices had ‘fought like cats and dogs’ during their time in the spotlight – but it was Geri with whom things got really personal.

We take a look back at their twenty year long feud…

Geri’s departure from the band

In the band’s 90s heyday, rumours of infighting between Mel, Geri and bandmates Victoria, Emma and Mel C were rife.

Less than two years after their debut single Wannabe hit the top spot, Geri announced she’d had enough and confirmed her departure from the group in May 1998 leaving fans devastated.

Her decision to leave at the peak of the band’s fame and right before a huge US tour was never going to be well received, but her decision to quit on Mel’s birthday really touched a nerve.

Mel was crushed that Geri left the band on her birthday without telling her first(Image: Getty Images)

“When Geri left the group, it was bad,” Mel said of their relationship in a TV interview. “She left on my birthday and didn’t tell anybody. She didn’t show up. We had the American part of the tour to continue,” she fumed.

Reunion tour clashes

The band’s first attempt at a reunion in 2007 brought up problems before the girls had even picked up a microphone.

As the fivesome got together for a London press conference to announce news of their tour, it was decided they’d all step out matching in head to toe black as a show of togetherness.

As well as looking striking and dramatic the styling would also demonstrate how united they were as grown women, after previously being known for dressing as their separate Spice characters. But on the day, Mel B could not resist rebelling, adding a shiny, bright red skirt to her outfit in the hope that all eyes would be on her.

But, as Mel has learned so many times before and since, Never Underestimate The Halliwell – particularly when it comes to attention seeking.

Geri rocked up in a ultra feminine white flowing floral maxi dress – worlds away from the chic black her bandmates has agreed to. She totally stole the show and had to be plonked front and centre in all of all the photographs from the press launch.

Despite the rather awkward start to proceedings, all five Spices – including Victoria – went ahead with the tour – performing in America and the UK before the dates were sensationally cut short in February 2008.

The band cancelled gigs in Sydney, Beijing, Cape Town and Buenos Aires. At the time the girls blamed “family and personal commitments” for the sudden change of plan.

But it’s thought that even before the shows started the infighting of days past made an ugly appearance.

“I wasn’t in a very good space with my marriage and I didn’t feel I could go on any more, living in this fake world,” Mel B said last year. She even took full responsibility, saying: “It was my fault, so I was determined to get us back together and I’m still determined it will be five at one point.”

When asked in a recent radio interview how long their 2019 tour was expected to be, Geri responded with a barbed jibe at her bandmate.

“Let’s see if Mel B behaves herself and then we’ll see,” she warned. Yikes.

Creative differences reopen old wounds

Over ten years later the Spice Girls were back together once again in 2019 for another reunion tour – this time without Posh.

According to sources, Mel B and Geri began bickering about the creative direction from day one.

Mel wanted to re-market herself as an edgy and raunchy Rita Ora-esque performer, while Geri hoped the get together would have a wholesome, family vibe reflecting how they’ve grown as mothers.

An insider told The Sun: “The gigs will go ahead whatever happens, but those two couldn’t be more divided and both see themselves as the boss. Everyone involved is braced for some epic arguments once they’re back together.”

Mel is reportedly wanting the girls’ to embrace their raunchy sides on the new tour(Image: Getty)

While another source close to the group claimed that married mother-of-two Geri was not happy with the costumes Mel is gunning for – deeming them ‘too tarty’ for her tastes.

Geri is reportedly wanting to move on from her Ginger Spice alter ego and has insisted Mel should ‘grow up’ and ‘learn to keep her mouth shut occasionally,” it’s been reported.

Geri, who famously only wears white now, adapted all of her stage costumes – including her infamous Union Jack dress – to fit her new ‘lady of the manor’ aesthetic’.

Lesbian Sex allegations

The awkward start of the 2007 reunion tour pales in comparison to the bombshell Mel B unleashed just weeks before the start of their comeback tour.

Ahead of the opening night in Dublin on May 24, Mel appeared on Piers Morgan’s Life Stories ITV show where she gave the delighted host one hell of an exclusive.

Mel told that she and Geri once enjoyed a night of passion in their Spice Girls heyday – which they ‘giggled’ about afterwards.

A grinning Mel admitted to a lesbian romp with Ginger Spice – before squirming that Geri and her husband Christian Horner were going to ‘kill her’ now. “She is going to hate me for this because she is all posh in a country house but it wasn’t a ‘thing’, it just happened, we just giggled at it and that was it.
