Filling Stations Hike Petrol Price Amid Dangote-NNPCL Crude Dispute

Filling stations in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital city, have increased the price of a litre of petrol from ₦860 to ₦930, making consumers pay at least ₦70 more than what it used to cost them to buy a litre of the premium commodity days ago.

The price increase has also become effective in parts of the country like Abuja and major northern cities with oil outlets now selling a litre of petrol between ₦950 to ₦970, depending on the filling stations. This represented a sharp increase of about ₦70 to ₦90 from the initial price of ₦880 last week.

Our correspondents in Lagos and Abuja observed that filling stations like MRS Oil &amp, Gas, Ardova Plc, Heyden, and others with special agreements with the Dangote Petroleum Refinery have adjusted their pumps to the new price.

Petrol stations like Matrix Energy, North-West Petroleum, Total Energies, Mobil, Bovas, Enyo, amongst others also followed suit.

The new price regime followed an announcement by Dangote Refinery temporarily halting the sale of petroleum products in Naira.

“This decision is necessary to avoid a mismatch between our sales proceeds and our crude oil purchase obligations, which are currently denominated in US dollars”, the company said in a statement earlier in March 2025.

The $20bn refinery based in Lagos said the sales of its products in Naira have exceeded the value of Naira-denominated crude it has received from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).

“As a result, we must temporarily adjust our sales currency to align with our crude procurement currency”, the company explained.

The refinery said it remained committed to serving the Nigerian market and would resume the sale of its product to the local market in Naira as soon as it received crude cargoes from the NNPCL in Naira.

The announcement by the refinery came amid its price war with the NNPCL.

On February 26, 2025, the $20bn refinery owned by Africa’s richest man and industrialist Aliko Dangote, slashed the ex-depot price of petrol from ₦890 to ₦825 per litre.

Under the new arrangement, customers purchase the premium commodity at ₦860 per litre at selected outlets in Lagos, ₦870 in the South-West, ₦880 in the North, and ₦890 in the South-South and South-East. Dangote has also reduced the price of diesel in recent times.

Almost immediately, the NNPCL reduced its retail price from ₦945 to ₦860 in Lagos, with a similar price reduction reflection at NNPCL outlets in other states of the Federation.

The Dangote Refinery was commissioned in May 2023.

Some analysts and industry experts have hailed the price war, saying it will “erode abnormal profit” enjoyed by capitalists but petrol marketers who still import the premium commodity have lamented the loss they incurred as a result of the sudden price drop.

As part of moves to reduce the strain on the US dollars, and guarantee price stability of petroleum products, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) in July 2024, directed the NNPCL to sell crude oil to Dangote Refinery and other local refineries in naira and not in United States ‘ greenback.

In March 2025, the NNPCL said its Naira-denominated crude sales agreement with the Dangote Refinery was structured for six months with March 2025 as the expiration date.

The state company, however, said that talks were on to replace the contract and that over 48 million barrels of crude oil have been made available to Dangote Refinery since October 2024 under the Naira-denominated arrangement.

The NNPCL also said it had made over 84 million barrels of crude oil available to the private refinery since it commenced operations in 2023.

Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, faces energy challenges, with all its state-owned refineries non-operational for decades until 2024. The country was heavily reliant on imported refined petroleum products, with the state-run NNPCL being the major importer of the essential commodities.

The Port Harcourt Refinery is one of the state-owned plants which recently came back on stream.

Fuel queues are commonplace in the country. Prices of petrol more than quadrupled since the removal of subsidy in May 2023 by President Bola Tinubu, from around ₦200/litre to about ₦1, 000/litre, compounding the woes of the citizens who power their vehicles, and generating sets with petrol, no thanks to decades-long epileptic electricity supply.

“Maggie and I are with her though and giving her lots of TLC. I’m sure she’ll be back peeling the veg, dancing and drinking sherry in my kitchen very soon. Hope you’re all having a lovely day with your Mum if you’re fortunate, like me, to have her”.

Joan’s chest infection comes after she was rushed to hospital with a broken pelvis after a fall, and wasn’t able to join Ruth for Christmas.

She was able to head back home in January, but still needs plenty of love and care due to her Alzheimer’s. While Joan is living with the condition, Ruth also lost her father, Dennis, to dementia in 2012.

Ruth admitted that she struggles with crippling fears for her own health, worrying that she too might also be diagnosed with the condition.

“I’m a bit ‘ head in the sand ‘ about Alzheimer’s. Both my parents have had it, I know what it entails and it horrifies me”, she said in Woman &amp, Home’s March edition.

“There’s a test you can do to see if you’re more likely to get it, but, because there’s no medication to treat it, I’d rather not know. When I have senior moments, as people call them, I panic. Then I let it go, because I can’t bear to think about that”.

Faced with measles, Texas healthcare workers confront ‘information warfare’

In her work at hospitals or in-home healthcare, Parker explained she has often talked to patients about the importance of vaccines. Some listen. Many don’t.

While Parker has seen plenty of misinformation and disinformation over the years, she said the COVID-19 pandemic made matters worse.

“There was a petri dish there just waiting for that mess to proliferate”, she said in reference to vaccine scepticism.

“And then the right wind came along, and it blew those spores all over the place: the spores of ignorance and misinformation”.

Rekha Lakshmanan observed something similar. She is the chief strategic officer for The Immunization Partnership, a Houston-based nonprofit that aims to eradicate preventable diseases.

She argued that Texas has long been a site of vaccine misinformation. But the pandemic “made the nation catch up with Texas”.

False rumours flooded the internet, warning that vaccines could alter DNA or render people infertile. Some conspiracy theories even posited that the vaccine could be used for implanting chips into patients ‘ bodies for surveillance.

Not all vaccine sceptics believe the misinformation. The way Lakshmanan sees it, vaccine hesitancy falls on a continuum. At the far end, there are those who cannot be convinced to get a vaccine, regardless of the data you present. Unfortunately, she said, that’s the loudest group.

Yet, others can be convinced.

“You have to take a step back and see that there’s a bigger part of that continuum that’s parents, and they just have questions”, Lakshmanan said.

She explained that parents are often sifting through reams of misinformation, trying to understand what is real and what isn’t.

For example, the anti-vaccine organisation Children’s Health Defense recently published a website that bore a striking resemblance to materials published by the CDC.

But its site was riddled with disinformation about vaccines. Kennedy, who served as a leader at Children’s Health Defense before joining the government, ultimately ordered the organisation to take the site down.

“The challenge with misinformation is that it could look legit”, Lakshmanan said, “which is why we have to approach these conversations with empathy”.

That includes arguments about “parents ‘ rights”, which she says is entirely misleading. Anti-vaccine leaders like Kennedy have accused the government of forcing vaccination on parents.

Meghan Markle finally announces when her jam will go on sale after twist in charity row

Meghan Markle has made a major announcement about her lifestyle brand – ignoring the bitter charity row that’s engulfing her and Prince Harry. The Duchess of Sussex, who revealed her As Ever business earlier this year, has revealed that she is introducing her collection of products this week.

The product line, which comes off the back of her panned Netflix show With Love, Meghan, includes a raspberry spread, honey, flower sprinkles and cookie and crepe mixes. And in a newsletter sent to fans today, Meghan says she is “so excited to introduce the As ever collection to you this week”.

The newsletter comes as Meghan has now become embroiled in an almost week-long row that has engulfed Sentebale, the charity her husband set up almost 20 years ago but has now dramatically quit amid an explosive row with the organisation’s chair Dr Sophie Chandauka.

But seemingly publicly ignoring the spat, Meghan has pressed ahead with the launch of her eagerly awaited products, which she says can help fans “mimic the magic of Montecito in a way you can recreate at home”.

She writes: “Every item is inspired by the ways I show care to the people in my life, like the lemon ginger tea blend which is a fuss-free spin on the warm drink I make at home using fresh lemons from the garden. Or the crepe mix that transforms a typical weekend breakfast into a chance to reminisce.

” Crepes remind me of my time backpacking through France as a student. Biting into these streetside thin pancakes – filled with chocolate, fruit, fresh lemon and powdered sugar, or made savoury with ham and cheese – they truly are a canvas for flavour. I wanted to bring that memory and experience to you at home. (Also, they’re so easy to make!) “

Although the products set to launch are shown on the As Ever website, as yet there are no prices or information on how to buy them. But Meghan adds:” I hope when you see what I’ve worked so hard to create, you’re encouraged to know that whatever life brings, you can do it too. Your value, your creativity, your joy – that is you, as it’s always been and always will be. You are you – As ever, and forever.

“Someone once told me the biggest risk you can take is deciding not to take one at all. Now, after careful planning and preparing (while also parenting! ), it’s time to bring As ever from my home to yours so you can make the everyday exceptional in an easy yet meaningful way”.

The newsletter comes today where there has been another twist in Harry’s charity row. It has now been claimed that Harry sent an ‘ unpleasant ‘ message to the head of his former African charity after she refused to publicly defend his wife Meghan.

The Duke of Sussex dramatically quit as patron of Sentebale, an HIV charity he founded almost 20 years ago and has become embroiled in a public spat with Dr Sophie Chandauka, the organisation’s chair.

She issued a blistering statement of her own, criticising the move by Harry, co-founder Prince Seeiso of Lesotho and the trustees of the charity to step down. And in an interview yesterday, she claimed that after an awkward moment between her and Meghan was captured on camera at a polo match to raise funds for Sentebale last year, she was asked to issue a statement by Harry’s team defending the duchess.

She said she refused the request saying “we cannot become an extension of the Sussex machine”. Now it has been reported that after Dr Chandauka’s refusal, Harry allegedly sent her a direct message asking her to “explain herself”.

Sources told The Telegraph that the message was “unpleasant in tone” and used ‘imperious’ language leaving the charity chair “taken aback”. The publication reports that this dispute is believed to have contributed to the bitter row that has engulfed the charity. The Mirror has approached the Sussexes for comment.

In an interview on Sky News yesterday, Dr Chandauka addressed the polo fundraiser in Florida claiming that Meghan had only decided to turn up at short notice – bringing her “very famous friend” Serena Williams with her.

Since Dr Chandauka’s interview yesterday, representatives for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have not commented. However, a source close to the former trustees and patrons of Sentebale dismissed her comments as a “publicity stunt”. They added: “They remain firm in their resignation, for the good of the charity, and look forward to the adjudication of the truth”.
