Sam Thompson and Zara McDermott split up just days before receiving a very personal gift.
The couple have split following their almost six-year romance, having spent Christmas and New Year’s Eve apart. They shared their beloved cats and had previously resided together in a stunning London home. However, the couple’s “crisis talks” were reportedly sparked by a heated row over the course of the past year.
The pair dissuaded split rumors and even recently showed signs of engagement amid rumors of trouble in paradise. Some fans were surprised to learn their split after Zara gave Sam a thoughtful Christmas gift. Zara displayed an impressive duo of paintings she had commissioned for Sam as a gift despite their separation during the day’s festivities.
The Love Island star said: “Sam’s Xmas pressie from me! These paintings were created because I wanted to make something extremely meaningful for him. They may seem a little random, but they all have the same meaning as his values. They’re by @brittyflynn she’s absolutely incredible”. Sam made a Christmas Day sacrifice to help those in need by responding to a charity’s request to give gifts, while Zara chose to spend the day with her family.
Over the summer, it was claimed the couple were having “crisis talks” about their relationship. The former Love Island star left their London pad and headed to her family’s home for a while, according to reports of a heated argument between Sam and Zara. In August, the pair appeared to have patched things up as Zara celebrated Sam’s birthday.
They were both seen celebrating Zara’s birthday in December, where Sam gushed about spending the rest of his life with her. In his birthday message, Sam wrote: “My best friend, and soul mate…. some would say my person. I’m afraid you’re stuck with me forever happy birthday. I’m so in love with you, and how much have I missed you in the last month? Here’s to another amazing year with you”.
However, as news of their split broke, Sam took to Instagram to declare 2025 will be “the best year ever”. In a savage move, Sam filmed a video where he said: “New year! 2025 baby come on let’s have it! I can’t wait. You’re going to have the best year ever, and the new year is going to be amazing. And you know I’m always right”, before appearing to kiss his camera.
Just before Christmas, Sam and best friend Pete Wicks were seen enjoying the joys of a strip club while enjoying a festive outing. After playing for England on the pitch for Soccer Aid 2024, Zara appeared to shout at Sam in public last summer in a photo. Zara could be seen smiling as she waved her finger at her beau following the star-studded afterparty in the photos of the seemingly tense exchange.
In response to rumors of trouble in their relationship, Zara set the record straight about the “argument.” She captioned the photo, “Why did this make me laugh so much, btw?” Stop saying you should have scored!!!! You did your best and that’s all that matters!!!! You need to stop doubting yourself!!! I’m actually telling him positive affirmations in a very passionate manner despite the appearance of a fight between us! ]laughing-face emojis]”.
