Chappell Roan, a pop star and winner of the Grammys, has shared how to pronounce her name properly.

The 27-year-old songwriter shot to fame with viral hits like Hot to Go and Good Luck, Babe. Pronouncing her name, however, appeared to be a bit of a problem for some fans. On March 17, 2024, Chappell Roan’s US show at West Des Moines may have seen the Red Wine Supernova singer explain how to pronounce her name. Since then, Instagram has shared footage from the concert.

A clip of Roan explaining how to pronounce her name, has since gone viral, racking up over 120, 000 likes. “Chappell Roan teaching you how to pronounce her name,” is the caption of the post. March 17th, 2024″.

She can be heard saying: “If you’ve been saying ‘ shappell rowe-anne, ‘ this is your final warning. It’s ‘ Chappell Roan, ‘ babe”. Members of the public have been divided over how to pronounce the name Roan, who was relieved to share how to pronounce it.

One person remarked, “I don’t see any problems with her changing the way people pronounce her stage name.”

However, some people suggested Roan was incorrect in etiquette when using her stage name in another way. One user suggested: “She actually cares about the pronunciation of her made up name”. A user has since pointed out the “made up name” takes inspiration from Roan’s grandfather, with David K. Chappell paid tribute to with the stage persona.

Another added: “Why wouldn’t she? When other people mispronounce their usernames or pet names, people get angry. A third wrote: “It’s not made up, she named herself after her grandparent. Please don’t be disrespectful. It’s important for people to be aware of who you are as an artist, regardless of where a name comes from.

Chappell’s real name is Kayleigh Rose Amstutz, and in a 2022 interview with Oxford student newspaper Cherwell, she confirmed: “I have never felt super connected to my real name Kayleigh. My grandfather’s name was Dennis K. Chappell, so I took Chappell in his honour. I told him that I would be Chappell for him before he passed away in 2016 due to brain cancer.

Other users have confirmed how to pronounce the name “Shapelle.” Members of the public shared how they had previously used her name after realizing they had been using the wrong name on Reddit.

One person remarked, “I pronounced her name Shapelle for a while, and I don’t want to blame myself; I’ll blame my grade school French classes for it.”

A third claimed that it was difficult to realize that Roan’s name had been spelled incorrectly at one of her concerts. They stated, “I understand the Roan part, but I’m trying to train myself to avoid using Shappell lol.” For the past two years, I’ve called her that. I wasn’t even aware of how incorrectly pronouncing her name until a few weeks ago when I saw her perform at the Columbus concert, lol.
