Yobo: ‘Iwobi, Chukwueze Combination Good For Super Eagles’

Former Super Eagles skipper, Joseph Yobo believes very strongly that the attacking combination of Arsenal star, Alex Iwobi and Villarreal winger, Samuel Chukwueze will help the Super Eagles a great deal after both youngsters’ brilliant showing in AFCON 2019 quarterfinal win against South Africa, Completesports.com reports.

The former Everton defender who stated this during his punditry duties on Supersport on Wednesday also said that Gernot Rohr’s men defeated South Africa 2-1 at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals because they were the ‘dominant’ team during the encounter.

Yobo hailed Iwobi and Chukwueze for their resourceful combination that gave Nigeria the first goal in the win which helped the Super Eagles advance to the semifinals.

Chukwueze gave the Super Eagles 1-0 lead before the break after an assist from Alex Iwobi. However, Bafana Bafana levelled scores in the second half through Bongani Zungu’s goal.

With the match looking to head into extra time, Udinese central defender, William Troost-Ekong reacted fast to read Moses Simon’s kick and forced the ball over the line for Nigeria’s 89th minute winner
“It was a very good goal and a good combination from Iwobi and Chukwueze,” Yobo said on SuperSport during his post-match analysis.

“In the first half, Nigeria did what they needed to do and got the early goal. In the second half, Nigeria sat back a little bit too early and South Africa started putting Nigeria under pressure and they got the equalizer.

“But what is more important is that we got the win at the end of the day. Nigeria didn’t give up, they kept on fighting and believing that there is something at the end of the day. And that they can go on and win the game and in the last minutes, they showed great character.

“The free-kick Etebo took was actually going into the net and the Bafana Bafana goalkeeper made that great save for them. Otherwise, it would have been 2-0 to Nigeria.

“I think it gives you more confidence going forward. Congratulations to Nigeria. They were the dominant team and here we are in the semifinals,” Yobo summed up.
