Wynne Evans ‘hanging onto his job’ after sexual jibe at Strictly co-star and BBC warning
Wynne Evans, the star of Strictly Come Dancing, is said to be holding onto his career after being caught making vile sexual remarks on camera.
The Go Compare advertisement star’s comments during the Strictly Live tour have been condemned. He made an appearance at the Strictly cast photocall at the start of the tour in Birmingham. Evans stood alongside fellow celebrities JB Gill, Tasha Ghouri, Montell Douglas, Shayne Ward and Jamie Borthwick.
The Strictly professional dancers and Janette Manrara, who serves as the tour host, also joined them. When Janette walked over to the group, Evans was filmed making an inappropriate sexual remark to them as they sat together for a photo. He sang out: “Go Compare”, before adding: “Not too close to Jamie”. Then, in reference to a lewd sexual act, he made the incredibly offensive term “spit roast.”
In a statement, Evans told the Mirror: “My language was inappropriate and unacceptable, for which I sincerely apologise”. Evans and dance partner Katya were both subject to criticism for an “inside joke” just a few weeks ago. Before appearing to move his hand closer to Katya’s stomach, he unfavorably placed it on her waist. As the pair sat side by side, Katya’s face appeared to be stung by his hand.
Evans had also found himself at the centre of more drama after a “vulgar” joke he reportedly made behind-the-scenes was “leaked”. The singer claimed that after getting his make-up done backstage, his double chin resembled a vagina. His most recent statement has sparked further controversy on Strictly and the BBC.
Although brand and culture expert Nick Ede has suggested Evans’ third error over the course of a few months may prove too much, despite the fact that he hosts a show on BBC Radio Wales every day at 9am. He told the Daily Mail, “I think the BBC will have to tread very carefully with Wynne because his controversial and offensive remarks will soon outweigh his popularity.”
“He will continue to hold onto his position, but all eyes will be on him,” he said, and the BBC may cut ties with him if he makes another poor decision. He further stated that “in the past, this may have been brushed under the carpet and caused by nerves and banter, but because the show is so closely monitored for any minute misconduct, the BBC has had to quickly respond to this to stop it from escalating and further and from causing any harm to the brand.”
A spokesperson for BBC Wales, who Evans works for, told the Mirror: “We support the statement made by BBC Studios. We do not tolerate unacceptable behaviour”. A BBC Studios spokesman responded to Evans’ most recent offensive comment by saying, “We were not previously aware of the remark and did not receive any complaints. We have made it very clear to Wynne that we will not tolerate such conduct on the tour. Due to an ankle problem, Evans recently rescheduled his Strictly tour appearance in Glasgow.
The Mirror has received a comment request from BBC Wales and Evans’ representative.
