World reaction to Trump’s ‘take over’ and ethnic cleansing plan for Gaza

After Palestinians are forcibly removed from the besieged enclave, US President Donald Trump has revealed his shocking plan to occupy the Gaza Strip, raising concerns that he would support an ethnic cleansing campaign.

Trump made the suggestion that Palestinians would “love to leave” Gaza during a press conference on Tuesday with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, claiming that he sees long-term US ownership of the Strip while it is being rebuilt and that it will provide employment and economic prosperity to the region.

Trump’s comments drew sharp responses in the US and abroad. Here are some of the most notable global reactions:

Hamas

Palestinians in Gaza are being asked to be ethnically cleansed, according to senior Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri, who called for their “expulsion from their land.”

Any ideas of this kind are capable of igniting the region, according to Abu Zuhri, and Trump’s remarks about his desire to control Gaza are ridiculous and absurd. Because the people of Gaza won’t permit such plans to come into force, “we believe that [the plan] is a recipe for chaos and tension in the region.”

Abdel Latif al-Qanou, a spokesman for Hamas, said that “the American racist position aligns with the Israeli extreme right’s position of dislocating our population and destroying our cause.”

Palestine Liberation Organisation

The Palestinian People’s Organization, according to UN Secretary-General Hussein al-Sheikh, rejects all calls for their displacement.

According to him on X, “The Palestinian leadership affirms its unwavering support for the two-state solution, in accordance with international law and international law,” he said.

Palestine’s UN envoy

Palestinians in Gaza should be able to reclaim what was once their homes in Israel, according to Riyad Mansour, the leader of the Palestinian delegation to the UN.

“For those who want to send the Palestinian people to a ‘ nice place’, allow them to go back to their original homes in what is now Israel”, he said, using Trump’s language.

Because this is where we belong, he continued, “The Palestinian people want to rebuild Gaza.”

Saudi Arabia

While Trump claimed that Riyadh was not demanding a Palestinian homeland, Saudi Arabia said it would not normalise ties with Israel without the creation of a Palestinian state.

The foreign ministry criticized any attempts to relocate Palestinians from their land and called its position “clarified and explicit” as well as “not negotiable.”

“ Saudi Arabia also reiterates its previously announced unequivocal rejection of any infringement on the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, whether through Israeli settlement policies, the annexation of Palestinian lands, or attempts to displace the Palestinian people from their land,” it said.

US Senator Chris Murphy

“He’s totally lost it”, Murphy, a Democrat, said on X. “A US invasion of Gaza would result in the destruction of thousands of American soldiers and decades of Middle Eastern hostilities.” It’s like a bad, sick joke”.

US Senator Chris Van Hollen

“Trump’s proposal to push two million Palestinians out of Gaza and take ‘ ownership ‘ by force, if necessary, is simply ethnic cleansing by another name”, Van Hollen, a Democrat, said.

“This declaration will undermine our Arab partners in the region while also providing ammunition to Iran and other adversaries.”

Van Hollen claimed that the proposal “defies decades of bipartisan American support for a two-state solution.”

CAIR, a US Muslim advocacy group

“Gaza belongs to the Palestinian people, not the United States, and President Trump’s call to expel Palestinians from their land is an absolute non-starter”, the Council on American-Islamic Relations said.

This crime against humanity would cause widespread conflict, put the last nail in the coffin of international law, and destroy what is left of our nation’s standing and reputation if the Palestinian people were ever forced to leave Gaza, according to the statement.

Russia

According to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, “practicing a policy of collective punishment is a method that Russia rejects,” “There are Israeli plans to take control of the occupied West Bank and attempts to relocate Palestinians from the Gaza Strip.”

China

The Chinese government’s foreign ministry stated that it opposes the forced displacement of Gaza’s residents and hopes that all parties will use the ceasefire and post-conflict governance as an opportunity to re-engage the Palestinians in a two-state solution.

Turkiye

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said Trump’s comments were “unacceptable” and warned that leaving Palestinians “out of the equation” would lead to more conflict.

If the Palestinians’ deaths stopped and their circumstances changed, Fidan said Turkiye would review the actions it had taken against Israel, including suspending trade and removing its ambassador.

Australia

A two-state solution, in which both Israelis and Palestinians could live in peace and security, is still supported by Australia’s prime minister Anthony Albanese.

“We’ve supported a ceasefire, we’ve supported hostages being released and we’ve supported aid getting into Gaza”, he said.

However, he refused to directly comment on Trump’s speech, saying: “I’m not going to have a running commentary on statements by the president of the United States”.

Amnesty International

Paul O’Brien, executive director at Amnesty International US, said removing all Palestinians from Gaza was “tantamount to destroying them as a people”.
