The dozen European golfers who will eventually be charged with attempting to retain the Ryder Cup in New York in September will undoubtedly be encouraged by Seve Ballesteros’ spirit.
The continent’s most charismatic star’s impact is still felt when Europe and the USA play in their biennial jousts, fifteen years after his tragic death.
When Europe won the “miracle of Medinah” in 2012, a game that exemplified how he fearlessly played, it was omnipresent. It was the first Ryder Cup after Seve’s death aged 54 – and that spirit remains.
In fact, during the most recent match in Rome, captain Luke Donald made sure the swashbuckling Spaniard had room in the European team room in 2023.
Team shirts were intentionally personalized with his image, which was also engraved with his own. Quite rightly, Seve’s memory continues as an enduring and inspirational presence.
Twenty candidates will contest the ‘ Team Cup ‘ in Abu Dhabi from 10-12 January. In a match that was appropriately dubbed the “Sve Trophy” in the majority of previous incarnations, Great Britain and Ireland take on Continental Europe.
Although the event is not a final audition, Donald will have the opportunity to run the rule over likely Ryder Cup candidates for Bethpage Black’s grueling matchup in September.
Seve was the original Continental European captain, inspiring a one point victory over Colin Montgomerie’s GB&, I team at Sunningdale in 2000. Up until 2013, the matches continued in this manner, with the exception of the Ryder Cup, and there were participation from all the greats of European golf at the time.
Few people in Ireland attended the event in 2007 because the National Ploughing Championships were taking place close by and attracted 80, 000 spectators. Despite the efforts of Ballesteros and Sir Nick Faldo, only a small number of people opted to watch the golf.
The Ballesteros family’s relationship to the European Tour eventually became strained, which caused the match to end. Between 2014 and 2018, the Eurasia Cup – Asia versus Europe replaced it, and Seve’s name abruptly disappeared from the schedule.
While these lower key matches have been in existence the continent has beaten the USA in the 2002, 04, 06, 10, 12, 14, 18 and 23 Ryder Cups. Eight wins, the only defeats coming in the away contests of 2008, 16 and 21.
And those losses were the only ones to occur during the year without these warm-up team competitions. Europe lost by a record margin, 19- 9 at Whistling Straits. A coincidence? Maybe, but probably not.
Donald certainly credited the GB&, I v. the Continent’s participation in his preparations for the Rome victory in the following year with being significant.
Bob MacIntyre, Nicolai Hojgaard, and Sepp Straka were just three of the Ryder Cup winning teams that traveled to Abu Dhabi.
In order to learn more about each other’s personalities, there was a chance to work together and observe how each team member responded to a group game. Tommy Fleetwood, Shane Lowry, and Tyrrell Hatton, some of the more well-known Ryder Cup players, were introduced as newcomers.
“It gives vital experience of team matchplay”, Donald recently told Worldwide Golf. Additionally, it allows me, some of my vice-captains, and the tour staff to spend time with these players and help them develop into the “one family” culture.
Donald continued, “It’s my goal to win in New York, but it’s also to lay the groundwork for players to make future Ryder Cup teams.”
Of secondary importance was the team’s eventual outcome in the most recent iteration of the competition, which saw Francesco Molinari lead the continental side to a four-point victory. This is the same thing that will happen in this week’s game.
Justin Rose replaces Fleetwood as GB&, I’s playing skipper, which should provide the 44-year-old with useful experience if he graduates to a vice-captain’s role in the States this autumn.
Tom McKibbin, the only player in Northern Ireland, is the only one who can compete for the English. LIV’s Tyrrell Hatton, as well as Fleetwood and Rose are the only members of the line up with Ryder Cup experience.
In his overviewing role, Donald is likely to be particularly interested in Aaron Rai’s integration. The savage Wolverhampton pro climbed more than 100 world rankings to the edge of the top 20 last year, earning him a PGA Tour victory.
Matt Wallace occupies his place and is determined to be present at Bethpage with his clubs rather than a BBC Radio 5 Live microphone as was previously the case two years ago.
After assisting Donald in Rome in 2023, Molinari once more leads the continental team. With Nicolai and Rasmus, the Hojgaard twins, leading the charge, and Nicolai and Rasmus, half of his side is from Denmark (what forces they have become).
Matteo Manassero, who is back in action, is eager to impress. When he first appeared on the scene, he was regarded as a certainty for the Ryder Cup, aged 31.
With his last-season performances on the DP World Tour, the Italian is one of those who, among other things, earned playing privileges in the US in 2025. There is no better time to grab Donald’s attention than now, so he will have plenty of opportunities.
It’s unfortunate that a Middle Eastern match that is all about Europe happens, and it’s even worse that the opportunity to honor the great Severiano Ballesteros has fallen victim to political and financial concerns.
