Business is notoriously challenging during the January transfer window.
However, several Premier League managers have suggested that they will need to enter the market this winter due to a packed fixture schedule, injuries, keeping up a title charge, or fighting to stay up.
The January transfer window for English clubs opened on Wednesday, January 1 and closes on Monday, 3 February at 23: 00 GMT.
Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool)
Sources said on New Year’s Eve there had been an approach – but no offer – from Real Madrid about signing Alexander-Arnold in January, which Liverpool rebuffed.
Real were also reported to be willing to purchase the England international this month by Spanish media.
Alexander-Arnold is one of three key Liverpool players in the final six months of his contract.
Although Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah have reluctantly provided snippets during interviews regarding contract negotiations, the England international has had poor decisions.
He stated in September that no public announcements would be made regarding a new deal, which has added to the uncertainty about what the versatile 26-year-old has in store. He has been a Liverpool player since he was six.
Real may be reluctant to make any changes, but how long will that last? Liverpool are currently favorites to win the Premier League, looking good in the Champions League, and looking good in the Carabao Cup semi-finals.
Contracted until: June 2025.
Marcus Rashford (Man Utd)

Since making his United youth debut in 2016, Rashford has made 138 goals in 426 games for the club. He has also advanced through the United youth ranks. The 2022-23 campaign was his most prolific when he scored 30 in all competitions.
However, he has struggled for form over the past 18 months and received criticism for a number of poor displays from fans and pundits. As one of United’s highest earners, Rushford may be a hindrance to moving in January.
Contracted until: June 2028.
Martin Zubimendi (Real Sociedad)

One of the hottest properties in January will be Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi, who is a top-class six-player who likes to dance like gold dust.
After a drawn-out pursuit, Liverpool was only able to persuade the 25-year-old to stay, but the Basque club eventually convinced him to. Manchester City are short of options because Rodri isn’t available.
Zubimendi, who helped Spain win Euro 2024, reportedly has a £51.7m release clause in his contract. Zubimendi expressed satisfaction with the way in which he is handling the pending transfer market speculation. He is unlikely to be short of offers because Sociedad is in the middle of the table.
Contracted until: June 2027
Ben Chilwell (Chelsea)

Ben Chilwell, age 28, should be at the height of his Chelsea career, but Enzo Maresca’s managerial team left him largely frozen out of the starting lineup at Stamford Bridge.
Chilwell, who left Leicester for £45m in 2020 and has only 45 minutes of a Carabao Cup game against Barrow this year, is missing because of his inability to leave the club in the previous window.
Maresca said Chilwell was among the players “thinking to leave” and the club will “try to find a solution” depending on what offers materialise for the left-back, who has won 21 caps for England. His wages appear to indicate a potential loan.
Contracted until: June 2027
Matheus Cunha (Wolves)

Matheus Cunha was thrust into the spotlight during what has largely been a struggle for Wolves as a thrilling start to the 2024-2005 season.
Cunha has been involved in 11 goals in his past 11 Premier League appearances, scoring seven and assisting four. Since John Richards scored 18 goals in 1980, he is also the first Wolves player to do so in a calendar year.
The 25-year-old Brazilian left Atletico Madrid for a potential £35 million deal, leaving Wolves with the choice between cashing in for a sizable profit when the market favors him or reserving a player with the ability to keep them together.
Contracted until: June 2027
Who else could be on the move in January?
Dani Olmo‘s future with the La Liga club is uncertain due to Barcelona’s failed attempt to register him for Spain.
Alexander Isak, a Newcastle striker, has frequently been linked with Arsenal.
Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz and Newcastle’s Bruno Guimaraes have both been linked with Manchester City.
Ruben Amorim may want to sign a few players to give his side a boost in January as manager of Manchester United.
Viktor Gyokeres, a striker for Sporting, has also been linked with Arsenal and a move to United. He previously worked for Amorim in Portugal.
The Old Trafford exit door has connections to Dutch internationals Joshua Zirkzee and Antony.
Jonathan David, a forward for Lille, has been mentioned in connection with several Premier League clubs and is currently on a contract until the end of the season.
Randal Kolo Muani, a Paris St.Germain forward, has reportedly been linked with every club in the world.
With both Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero injured, Tottenham may be forced into a window.
