Mudashiru Obasa, the controversed former leader of the Lagos State House of Assembly, claims that having an ambition to become governor of Lagos in 2027 is not wrong.

Obasa challenged any governor in the state to let Lagosians know when and where he said he wanted to succeed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu during a press briefing at his residence on Saturday in the GRA area of Ikeja, Lagos’ capital.

Obasa said, “Having (an) ambition to become a governor is not a sin. Is it true that I admitted to not considering running for governor when the budget was presented, but that does not imply that I lack experience or qualifications?

He criticized the militarisation of the assembly complex during the impeachment process, saying, “I’m still the speaker until the right thing is done.” He also claimed that while he was away from Nigeria, he was removed as speaker.

More than two-thirds of the 40-member legislative house voted him out on January 13th, 2025, leading to his removal as Lagos speaker due to alleged misconduct and other offenses.

Obasa’s deputy, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, was immediately elected the new Speaker, becoming the first female to take charge of the legislative body in the South-West state.

Obasa, from Agege Constituency I, was first elected into the House in 2007. Since then, he has since entered the chamber. Before being fired in January 2025, he was elected speaker in June 2015.
